The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in mechanomyographic (MMG) intensity patterns for the vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF) and vastus medialis (VM) during submaximal to maximal concentric isokinetic, eccentric isokinetic and isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors. Eleven men (mean ± SD age = 20.1 ± 1.1 years) performed concentric, eccentric and isometric muscle actions of the dominant leg extensors on 3 separate days. Surface MMG signals were detected from the VL, RF and VM, processed with a wavelet analysis and examined with a trend plot. The results indicated that the trend plot was capable of tracking systematic changes in MMG amplitude and frequency with an increase in torque. However, these changes were statistically significant in only 26% of the cases. There were also no consistent differences between muscles or contraction types for the significance of the trend plots.  相似文献

This study compared the activation pattern and the fatigue rate among the superficial muscles of the quadriceps femoris (QF) during severe cycling exercise. Peak oxygen consumption (VO(2)peak) and maximal accumulated oxygen Deficit (MAOD) were established by 10 well-trained male cyclists (27.5 ± 4.1 years, 71.0 ± 10.3 kg, 173.4 ± 6.6 cm, mean VO(2)peak 56.7 ± 4.4 ml·kg·min(-1), mean MAOD 5.7 ± 1.1 L). Muscle activity (electromyographic [EMG] signals) was obtained during the supramaximal constant workload test (MAOD) and expressed by root mean square (RMS) and median frequency (MF slope). The RMS of the QF, vastus lateralis (VL) and vastus medialis (VM) muscles were significantly higher than at the beginning after 75% of exercise duration, whereas for the rectus femoris (RF), this was observed after 50% of exercise duration (p ≤ 0.05). The slope of the MF was significantly higher in the RF, followed by the VL and VM (-3.13 ± 0.52 vs. -2.61 ± 0.62 vs. -1.81 ±0.56, respectively; p < 0.05). We conclude that RF may play an important role in limiting performance during severe cycling exercise.  相似文献

Eighteen adults performed isometric muscle actions of the leg extensors at 25, 50, 75, and 100% maximal voluntary contraction (%MVC) at leg flexion angles of 25, 50, and 75 degrees. The results indicated that isometric torque production increased as leg flexion angle increased (75 degrees > 50 degrees > 25 degrees). For each muscle tested (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis), the EMG amplitude increased up to 100%MVC at each leg flexion angle (25, 50, and 75 degrees). The MMG amplitude for each muscle, however, increased up to 100%MVC at 25 and 50 degrees of leg flexion, but plateaued from 75 to 100%MVC at 75 degrees of leg flexion. We hypothesize that the varied patterns for the MMG amplitude-isometric torque relationships were due to leg flexion angle differences in: (1) muscle stiffness, (2) intramuscular fluid pressure, or (3) motor unit firing frequency.  相似文献

BackgroundTo compare the activation of shoulder and trunk muscles between six pairs of closed (CC) and open chain (OC) exercises for the upper extremity, matched for performance characteristics. The secondary aims were to compare shoulder and trunk muscle activation and shoulder activation ratios during each pair of CC and OC exercise.MethodsTwenty-two healthy young adults were recruited. During visit 1, the 5-repetition maximum resistance was established for each CC and OC exercise. During visit 2, electromyography activation from the infraspinatus (INF), deltoid (DEL), serratus anterior (SA), upper, middle and lower trapezius (UT, MT, LT), erector spinae (ES) and external oblique (EO) muscles was collected during 5-repetition max of each exercise. Average activation was calculated during the concentric and eccentric phases of each exercises. Activation ratios (DEL/INF, UT/LT, UT/MT, UT/SA) were also calculated. Linear mixed models compared the activation by muscle collapsed across CC and OC exercises. A paired t-test compared the activation of each muscle and the activation ratios (DEL/INF, UT/LT, UT/MT, UT/SA) between each pair of CC and OC exercises.ResultsThe INF, LT, ES, and EO had greater activation during both concentric (p = 0.03) and eccentric (p < 0.01) phases of CC versus OC exercises. Activation ratios were lower in CC exercises compared to OC exercises (DEL/INF, 3 pairs; UT/LT, 2 pairs; UT/MT, 1 pair; UT/SA, 3 pairs).ConclusionUpper extremity CC exercises generated greater activation of shoulder and trunk muscles compared to OC exercises. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether running economy is affected by isokinetic eccentric exercise designed to cause muscle damage. Twenty-four young healthy men performed 120 maximal voluntary eccentric actions at each thigh's quadriceps muscle at an angular velocity of 60 degrees .s. The participants were then randomly divided into 2 equal groups, 1 of which exercised 24 hours later, while the other group rested. Muscle damage indicators (i.e., serum creatine kinase, delayed onset muscle soreness, and eccentric, concentric, and isometric peak torque) and running economy indicators (i.e., oxygen consumption, pulmonary ventilation, respiratory exchange ratio, respiratory rate, and heart rate during treadmill running at 2.2 and 3.3 m.s) were assessed prior to and 48 hours following the eccentric exercise. All muscle damage indicators changed significantly in both groups (p < 0.05) in a way suggestive of considerable muscle damage. Running economy indicators of the exercise group demonstrated only an elevation of respiratory rate at 48 hours (p < 0.05) and a tendency to lower economy compared to the resting group. It can be concluded that isokinetic eccentric exercise applied to the quadriceps femoris muscles did not affect running economy 48 hours later and that resting during this period tended to result in more economical running compared to exercising at 24 hours.  相似文献

In this study, we examined whether different exercise modes provoke functional differences in maximal and explosive force-generating capacities and fatigability of the quadriceps femoris (QF). Additionally, the interaction of different functional capacities was studied in competitive athletes. Ten competitive tennis players and 10 endurance athletes participated in the study. Pre-exercise force-generating capacities were determined during maximal voluntary isometric knee extensions (MVC). Fatigability of the QF was studied using sustained isometric contractions with target loads of 20% and 40% of pre-exercise MVC. Postexercise MVCs were conducted 20 seconds, 1 minute, and 3 minutes post task failure. Muscle activation of the QF during the fatiguing exercises and postexercise MVCs was estimated using surface electromyography. Higher explosive force-generating capacities, but no differences in absolute moments, were detected in tennis players compared with endurance athletes. Fatigability of the QF during both fatiguing tasks was approximately the same in both athletic populations. This was indicated by minor group differences in endurance time, postexercise MVC production, and electromyography (EMG)-estimated muscle activation during fatigue. Variability in endurance time was not significantly associated with pre-exercise force-generating capacities in these competitive athletes. In both athletic populations, recovery of MVC was significantly slower after the fatiguing contraction with 20% of MVC compared with that with 40% of MVC. These results may enhance understanding of plasticity of the neuromuscular system and yield interesting information for the optimization of athletic training programs. Explosive strength training might enhance endurance athletes' explosiveness without decreasing muscle fatigue resistance. The exercise profile of competitive tennis is suggested to act as a sufficient trigger to reach high neuromuscular fatigue resistance but may be inadequate to cause significant gains in absolute muscle strength.  相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the intra and interday reliability of surface electromyographic amplitude values of the scapular girdle muscles and upper limbs during 3 isometric closed kinetic chain exercises, involving upper limbs with the fixed distal segment extremity on stable base of support and on a Swiss ball (relatively unstable). Twenty healthy adults performed the exercises push-up, bench-press and wall-press with different effort levels (80% and 100% maximal load). Subjects performed three maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) in muscular testing position of each muscle to obtain a reference value for root mean square (RMS) normalization. Individuals were instructed to randomly perform three isometric contraction series, in which each exercise lasted 6 s with a 2-min resting-period between series and exercises. Intra and interday reliabilities were calculated through the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC 2.1), standard error of the measurement (SEM). Results indicated an excellent intraday reliability of electromyographic amplitude values (ICC ? 0.75). The interday reliability of normalized RMS values ranged between good and excellent (ICC 0.52–0.98). Finally, it is suggested that the reliability of normalized electromyographic amplitude values of the analyzed muscles present better values during exercises on a stable surface. However, load levels used during the exercises do not seem to have any influence on variability levels, possibly because the loads were quite similar.  相似文献

Bone fractures cause disabilities that leave the elderly bedridden and strengthening the muscles of the lower limbs, especially the quadriceps femoris, is the main kinematical method of preventing falls. Recently, however, it has become clear that the psoas major is critical for walking ability. We examined changes due to aging in the size of the psoas major compared with changes in the quadriceps femoris. Bone fractures are more frequent in women than in men; our participants (n=210) were therefore exclusively women ranging in age from 20 to 79 and divided into 6 age groups (n=35 each) in 10-year increments. Cross-sectional areas of the two muscles were measured by an MR scanner for a comparative estimation of muscle size. The psoas major showed the greatest quantity in subjects in their 20s, after which it declined steadily until the 60s and dramatically in the 70s, while the area of the quadriceps femoris was preserved until the 40s and showed no dramatic later decline. Exercise beyond regular daily activities is recommended to prevent the psoas major from decreasing in volume. We also recommend the development of a method of maintaining its muscle volume which would target women younger than 40 and older than 60.  相似文献

Although the possibility that the vastus intermedius (VI) muscle contributes to flexion of the knee joint has been suggested previously, the detail of its functional role in knee flexion is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the antagonist coactivation of VI during isometric knee flexion. Thirteen men performed 25–100% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) at 90°, 120°, and 150° knee joint angles. Surface electromyography (EMG) of the four individual muscles in the quadriceps femoris (QF) was recorded and normalized by the EMG signals during isometric knee extension at MVC. Cross-talk on VI EMG signal was assessed based on the median frequency response to selective cooling of hamstring muscles. Normalized EMG of the VI was significantly higher than that of the other synergistic QF muscles at each knee joint angle (all P < 0.05) with minimum cross-talk from the hamstrings to VI. There were significant correlations between the EMG signal of the hamstrings and VI (r = 0.55–0.85, P < 0.001). These results suggest that VI acts as a primary antagonistic muscle of QF during knee flexion, and that VI is presumably a main contributor to knee joint stabilization.  相似文献

The greater fluctuations in motor output that are often exhibited by old adults can be reduced with strength training. The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of strength and steadiness training by old adults on fluctuations in force and position during voluntary contractions with the quadriceps femoris muscle. Healthy old adults (65-80 yr) completed 16 wk of heavy-load (80% of maximum, n = 11) strength training, heavy-load steadiness training (n = 6), or no training (n = 9). Steadiness training required subjects to match the angular displacement about the knee joint to a constant-velocity template. The Heavy-Load group experienced a 5.5% increase in muscle volume, a 25% increase in maximal voluntary contraction force, and a 26% increase in the one-repetition (1-RM) load. The Heavy-Load Steady group experienced increases of 11.5, 31, and 36%, respectively. The maximal electromyogram signal of quadriceps femoris increased by 51% in the two training groups. The coefficient of variation (CV) for force during submaximal isometric contractions did not change with training for any group. Although both training groups also experienced a reduction in CV for force during anisometric contractions with a 50% 1-RM load, the standard deviation of position did not change with time for any group. The Heavy-Load Steady group also experienced a reduction in CV for force during the training contractions performed with the 80% 1-RM load. Thus strength training reduced the force fluctuations of the quadriceps femoris muscles during anisometric contractions but not during isometric contractions.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of contraction intensity, gender, and muscle on median frequency of the three superficial portions of the quadriceps femoris muscle. Thirty healthy volunteers were assessed for isometric electromyogram activity of the vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL), and rectus femoris (RF) muscles with the knee at 60 degrees flexion. Subjects performed 5-s isometric contractions at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% of the average of three maximal voluntary contractions. Median frequency (f(med)) of the three muscles was assessed through a power spectral analysis performed over 11 consecutive 512-ms epochs overlapping each other by one-half their length. The f(med) for each of the 11 epochs was then determined, followed by calculation of the mean and SD. The major findings of this study demonstrated that overall f(med) was significantly highest for the VL and lowest for the VM, whereas RF f(med) was between that of the other two muscles. Similar findings were observed for f(med) variability as the VL was significantly higher than the VM and RF, with no gender differences or differences between the latter two muscles. The results demonstrate that the largest change in f(med) as a function of contraction intensity occurred for the VL in men (18.6%) and women (7.6%). These findings suggest that muscle fiber-type homogeneity may exist in the VM and RF, which displayed negligible changes in f(med), whereas the VL may possess greater morphological variability.  相似文献

We examined the size of the four muscles of the quadriceps femoris in young and old men and women to assess whether the vastus lateralis is an appropriate surrogate for the quadriceps femoris in human studies of aging skeletal muscle. Ten young (24 +/- 2 yr) and ten old (79 +/- 7 yr) sedentary individuals underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the quadriceps femoris after 60 min of supine rest. Volume (cm3) and average cross-sectional area (CSA, cm2) of the rectus femoris (RF), vastus lateralis (VL), vastus intermedius (VI), vastus medialis (VM), and the total quadriceps femoris were decreased (P < 0.05) in older compared with younger women and men. However, percentage of the total quadriceps femoris taken up by each muscle was similar (P > 0.05) between young and old (RF: 10 +/- 0.3 vs. 11 +/- 0.4; VL: 33 +/- 1 vs. 33 +/- 1; VI: 31 +/- 1 vs. 31 +/- 0.4; VM: 26 +/- 1 vs. 25 +/- 1%). These results suggest that each of the four muscles of the quadriceps femoris atrophy similarly in aging men and women. Our data support the use of vastus lateralis tissue to represent the quadriceps femoris muscle in aging research.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare the Ab-Slide with crunch abdominal exercises for electromyographic activity for selected muscles. Forty-five subjects who regularly performed abdominal exercises participated. Subjects completed 5 trials for each exercise, with repetition rate controlled by the tester. Electromyographic activity for the external oblique (EO), upper rectus abdominis (URA), and lower rectus abdominis (LRA) was collected. Raw data for each muscle were rectified and integrated over 100-millisecond time intervals. For each muscle, the average concentric and eccentric integrated amplitudes of the middle 3 trials were compared with a dependent t-test. During concentric movement, the EO and LRA had significantly higher integrated activation amplitudes for the crunch exercise. During the eccentric movement, the URA, LRA, and EO had significantly higher average integrated activation amplitudes for the Ab-Slide exercise. The Ab-Slide is a credible abdominal exercise variation, but the crunch should remain the standard abdominal exercise.  相似文献

Imbalance and weakness of the serratus anterior and upper trapezius force couple have been described in patients with shoulder dysfunction. There is interest in identifying exercises that selectively activate these muscles and including it in rehabilitation protocols. This study aims to verify the UT/SA electromyographic (EMG) amplitude ratio, performed in different upper limb exercises and on two bases of support. Twelve healthy men were tested (average age = 22.8 +/- 3.1 years), and surface EMG was recorded from the upper trapezius and serratus anterior using single differential surface electrodes. Volunteers performed isometric contractions over a stable base of support and on a Swiss ball during the wall push-up (WP), bench press (BP), and push-up (PU) exercises. All SEMG data are reported as a percentage of root mean square or integral of linear envelope from the maximal value obtained in one of three maximal voluntary contractions for each muscle studied. A linear mixed-effect model was performed to compare UT/SA ratio values. The WP, BP, and PU exercises showed UT/SA ratio mean +/- SD values of 0.69 +/- 0.72, 0.14 +/- 0.12, and 0.39 +/- 0.37 for stable surfaces, respectively, whereas for unstable surfaces, the values were 0.73 +/- 0.67, 0.43 +/- 0.39, and 0.32 +/- 0.30. The results demonstrate that UT/SA ratio was influenced by the exercises and by the upper limb base of support. The practical application is to show that BP on a stable surface is the exercise preferred over WP and PU on either surfaces for serratus anterior muscle training in patients with imbalance between the UT/SA force couple or serratus anterior weakness.  相似文献

We examined the effect of differences in exercise intensity on the time constant (t c) of phosphocreatine (PCr) resynthesis after exercise and the relationships betweent c and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in endurance-trained runners (n = 5) and untrained controls (n = 7) (average VO2max = 66.2 and 52.0 ml · min–1 · kg–1, respectively). To measure the metabolism of the quadriceps muscle using phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we developed a device which allowed knee extension exercise inside a magnet. All the subjects performed four types of exercise: light, moderate, severe and exhausting. The end-exercise PCr: [PCr + inorganic phosphate (Pi)] ratio decreased significantly with the increase in the exercise intensity (P < 0.01). Although there was little difference in the end-exercise pH, adenosine diphosphate concentration ([ADP]) and the lowest intracellular pH during recovery between light and moderate exercise, significant changes were found at the two higher intensities (P < 0.01). These changes for runners were smaller than those for the controls (P < 0.05). The c remained constant after light and moderate exercise and then lengthened in proportion to the increase in intensity (P < 0.05). The runners had a lowert c at the same PCr and pH than the controls, particularly at the higher intensity (P < 0.05). There was a significant correlation betweent c and [ADP] in light exercise and betweent c and both end-exercise PCr and pH in severe and exhausting exercise (P < 0.05). The threshold of changes in pH andt c was a PCr: (PCr + Pi) ratio of 0.5. There was a significant negative correlation between the VO2max andt c after all levels of exercise (P<0.05).However, in the controls a significant correlation was found in only light and moderate exercise (P < 0.05). These findings suggest the validity of the use oft c at an end-exercise PCr:(PCr + Pi) ratio of more than 0.5 as a stable index of muscle oxidative capacity and the correlation between local and general aerobic capacity. Moreover, endurance-trained runners are characterized by the faster PCr resynthesis at the same PCr and intracellular pH.  相似文献

The primary purpose of this investigation was to study the eccentric and concentric torque-velocity characteristics of the quadriceps femoris in man using a recently developed combined isometric, concentric and eccentric controlled velocity dynamometer (the SPARK System). A secondary purpose was to compare the method error associated with maximal voluntary concentric and eccentric torque output over a range of testing velocities. 21 males (21-32 years) performed on two separate days maximal voluntary isometric, concentric and eccentric contractions of the quadriceps femoris at 4 isokinetic lever arm velocities of 0 degree.s-1 (isometric), 30 degrees.s-1, 120 degrees.s-1 and 270 degrees.s-1. Eccentric peak torque and angle-specific torques (measured every 10 degrees from 30 degrees to 70 degrees) did not significantly change from 0 degrees.s-1 to 270 degrees.s-1 (p greater than 0.005) with the exception of angle-specific 40 degrees torque, which significantly increased; p less than 0.05). The mean method error was significantly higher for the eccentric tests (10.6% +/- 1.6%) than for the concentric tests (8.1% +/- 1.7%) (p less than 0.05). The mean method error decreased slightly with increasing concentric velocity (p greater than 0.05), and increased slightly with increasing eccentric velocity (p greater than 0.05). A tension restricting neural mechanism, if active during maximal eccentric contractions, could possibly account for the large difference seen between the present eccentric torque-velocity results and the classic results obtained from isolated animal muscle.  相似文献

This study examined the electromyographic (EMG) response of the upper rectus abdominis (URA), lower rectus abdominis (LRA), internal obliques (IOs), external obliques (EOs), and the rectus femoris (RF) during various abdominal exercises (crunch, supine V-up, prone V-up on ball, prone V-up on slide board, prone V-up on TRX, and prone V-up on Power Wheel). The subjects (n = 21) performed an isometric contraction of the abdominal musculature while performing these exercises. Testing revealed no statistically significant differences between any of the exercises with respect to the EOs, the URA, or the LRA. However, when examining the IO muscle, the supine V-up exercise displayed significantly greater muscle activity than did the slide exercise. In addition, EMG activity of the RF during the crunch was significantly less than in any of the other 5 exercises. These results indicate that when performing isometric abdominal exercises, non-equipment-based exercises stressed the abdominal muscles similarly to equipment-based exercises. Based on the findings of the current study, the benefit of training the abdominal musculature in an isometric fashion using commercial equipment could be called into question.  相似文献
