Long-period fiber gratings as band-rejection filters   总被引:23,自引:0,他引:23  
We present a new class of long-period fiber gratings that can be used as in-fiber, low-loss, band-rejection filters. Photoinduced periodic structures written in the core of standard communication-grade fibers couple light from the fundamental guided mode to forward propagating cladding modes and act as spectrally selective loss elements with insertion losses act as backreflections <-80 dB, polarization-mode-dispersions <0.01 ps and polarization-dependent-losses <0.02 dB  相似文献

We have demonstrated, for the first time, the suppression of cladding mode coupling loss to ~0.1 dB in 30-dB fiber Bragg gratings for both nonhydrogenated and hydrogenated fibers. These fibers have also been optimized to give 0.04-dB average splice loss to SMF-28 fiber. The suppression of cladding mode coupling is achieved by accurately characterizing and controlling the photosensitive profile. This low level of cladding mode coupling loss has opened up a new range of broadband applications, previously restricted by the limited free spectral range of fiber Bragg gratings  相似文献

We have demonstrated a new method for tuning and chirping fiber gratings. It relies on etching of a fiber down to very small cladding diameter, so that the propagating optical mode in the fiber interacts with the surrounding media. A tuning range of 4.5 nm has been demonstrated with a potential of much larger tuning range by optimization of fibers. Chirped gratings were also demonstrated with this technique. These chirped gratings are very important for use in fiber dispersion compensation and optical pulse shaping.  相似文献

Optical fiber connectors that had a long working distance and wide alignment tolerance were implemented by utilizing long-period fiber gratings (LPGs) written in double-cladding fiber. The power coupling between two separated pieces of fiber was accomplished through the inner cladding modes of both fibers. Assisted by the LPGs, approximately 450 /spl mu/m was achieved for a 1-dB working distance, as well as about 3 mm of 3-dB working distance. When the separation between two fiber tips was 1.5 mm, the 3-dB lateral tolerance was measured to be about 30 /spl mu/m, which was five times better than was the case when not utilizing the LPGs. By using the inner cladding mode of a dispersion-compensating fiber, it was possible to implement a fiber connector that was insensitive to the perturbations at the cladding surface of the fiber. The total insertion loss of the device at the maximum coupling was 2.06 dB, from which the loss purely induced by inserting the fiber gratings was analyzed to be smaller than 0.9 dB. The experimental results show strong feasibility for implementing a simple and cost-effective fiber connector that does not require any bulk optic elements.  相似文献

We examine the cladding-mode resonances of fiber gratings UV written into the core of a novel microstructured fiber whose air regions are subsequently infused with polymer. The cladding spectrum changes with temperature because of the strong temperature dependence of the polymer refractive index and we show that these changes can be understood qualitatively using a simple model of the polymer-silica waveguide. Our results imply wavelength and amplitude tuning regimes for long period gratings written into this fiber with tunability enhanced over conventional long period gratings because of the small effective inner cladding diameter of our fiber  相似文献

提出在含涂覆层的标准通信光纤中用800nm红外飞秒激光直接写入了长周期光纤光栅(LPFGs)。从理论上分析了光纤涂覆层对于纤芯基模和包层模有效折射率的影响,并进一步研究涂覆层对LPFGs温度灵敏度的影响。分别对制作的去除涂覆层和含涂覆层LPFGs的低阶包层模进行了温度特性实验。结果表明:涂覆层的存在不仅能成为LPFGs理想的保护层,更重要的是将LPFGs的温度灵敏度提高到0.1173 ,与理论分析吻合。这种含涂覆层光纤光栅若作为温度传感器,将有着良好的机械强度和温度灵敏度。  相似文献

在对双包层手征光纤(W型)进行解析求解的基础上,用数值计算方法研究了纤芯和内外包层的手征参数和内包层厚度对模式色散特性的影响,给出了双包层手征光纤中基模的归一化传播常数b、群延迟d(Vb)/dV和波导色散Vd2(V6)/dV2随纤芯和内外包层的手征参数和内包层厚度的变化关系曲线。结果表明在双包层光纤的纤芯和内外包层中引入手征,可以极大地改变光纤中基模的色散特性,特别是内包层厚度不同时,色散特性也极为不同.  相似文献

研究了纤芯和内外外层都有手征的双包层手征光纤中的半漏模,给出了单包层和双包层手征光纤中几个低阶模的有效折射率和功率损耗系数随手征参数的变化关系曲线。结果表明,双包层手征光纤中的半漏模特性与半单包层手征光纤中的相比有很大的不同;当只有包层中有手征时,单包层手征光纤中也存在半漏模。  相似文献

General propagation properties and universal curves are given for doubly clad single-mode fibers with inner cladding index higher or lower than outer cladding index, using the two parameters inner cladding/core radii ratio and inner cladding/core index differences ratio. LP01, LP11, and LP02 cutoff conditions are examined. It is shown that dispersion properties largely differ from the singly clad single-mode fiber case, leading to large new possibilities for low-loss dispersion-free fibers at any wavelength between 1.3 and 1.7 µm.  相似文献

This paper proposes and demonstrates a technique for repetition-rate multiplication of an optical pulse train having an arbitrary period or pattern and the optical temporal encoding/decoding for the optical-code-division multiple-access (O-CDMA) system. The technique exploits the difference in the propagation speeds between the core and copropagating cladding modes of a fiber to obtain true-time-delay between the modes traveling in the core mode and the cladding mode, which can be used to achieve pulse multiplication. For the coupling to the cladding mode, long-period fiber gratings (LPGs) were used. A series of cascaded LPGs imprinted in a fiber with a specific separation has been employed to obtain a specific rate of pulse multiplication with a single input pulse. Second, by controlling the separations among the gratings, the temporal encoder/decoder for O-CDMA could be implemented. The principle and the applications of the proposed device are investigated in detail. The effect of the birefringence of fiber and fiber gratings on the system performance in the time and spectral domains is presented. The sensitivity of the cladding modes in a conventional fiber to the perturbations at the cladding has been overcome by replacing the conventional fiber with inner-cladding fiber. The properties and the benefits of using the inner-cladding mode are investigated.  相似文献

We demonstrated that the thermal stability of fiber Bragg gratings written in hydrogen-loaded standard fibers can be significantly enhanced by preirradiating the fiber with UV beam before writing gratings. Our experimental result shows that these gratings maintained more than 60% of their initial index modulation after 10 hours at 605/spl deg/C.  相似文献

An evaluation of the bending loss of single-mode fibers based on the measured mode field is described. The field decay constant and the normalized field intensity in the cladding are determined. Experimental results verified the validity of this method. Its accuracy is determined by the accuracy of field measurement. The mode field is calculated from the far-field distribution measured with finite dynamic range of more than 50 dB. Far-field measurement with finite dynamic range limits the accuracy of field evaluation. Dispersion shifted fibers are easier for evaluation because of the wider far-field distribution. Bending loss and mode field diameter can be measured simultaneously, and the method is applicable to any single-mode fibers with a matched clad structure. A microbending loss formula is also determined by the decay constant and the normalized field intensity in the cladding as well as uniform bending loss  相似文献

Characteristics of cladding index modulated fiber gratings for ambient refractive index sensing is studied in this paper. The modes propagation properties and coupling properties in cladding index modulated FBG are studied based on the classical coupling mode theory while considering interactions among multiple modes and developed on a three-layer step-index fiber geometry. Evolution of cladding mode resonance spectra of cladding index modulated FBG with the decreasing of fiber diameter is simulated and compared with the core grating. Sensing characteristics of cladding modes resonance of cladding index modulated FBG to the variation of ambient refractive index is detailed and emphasized for cladding modes resonances has a much narrower bandwidth. Results show that cladding index modulated fiber grating has better spectrum for ambient refractive index sensing applications under the same sensitivity with core index modulated fiber grating and may be applied to many field including biochemical sensing and environmental monitoring.  相似文献

应用数值解法对包层为单轴晶体材料且其光轴平行于光纤轴的光纤功率限制因子进行了理论模拟,并从模式特性出发解释了kcl对该类光纤Bragg光栅的反射率的影响.计算结果表明:对于HE11模,各向同性材料包层光纤中的能量比单轴晶体材料包层光纤中的能量更容易集中在纤芯中传输,而且集中程度与kcl的取值有关;各向异性材料包层比各向同性材料包层的光纤Bragg光栅的反射率要高;此类光纤Bragg光栅的反射率主要是由光纤纤芯和包层中能量分布决定的.  相似文献

We report, for the first time to our knowledge, the excellent optical performance of long-period gratings written in three standard fibers and in two nonstandard fibers, namely, S-doped and N-doped fibers, using the flexible and low-cost electric arc technique. The fundamental mechanism for their formation is proposed. The grating thermal behavior and the effect of fiber preannealing prior to writing have been investigated. 详细阐述了国内外几种典型光子晶体光纤光栅的制备方法,如紫外曝光法、热激成栅法、机械压力法、双光子吸收法.并分析了各自的优缺点,还分析了光子晶体光纤布拉格光栅、长周期光栅的模式耦合特性。研究表明:光子晶体光纤光栅具有对外界折射率不敏感的特性,且在纯硅纤芯写制的光栅还具有对温度不敏感的特性。简要介绍了光子晶体光纤光栅在光通信及光传感领域中的应用,并对基于光子品体光纤光栅的新型光子器件进行了展望。  相似文献

We present generalized mathematical expressions for coupled-mode equations for nonlinear pulse propagation in fiber gratings using discretized coupled-mode theory and quantitatively analyze the nonlinear properties of long-period fiber gratings, considering multimode coupling between the core mode and several cladding modes. The calculations yield nonlinear responses for the case of long-period fiber gratings, including pulse shaping and all-optical switching in the self- and cross-phase modulation regimes. In addition, we briefly discuss the group delay properties of long-period fiber gratings and present several numerical examples of nonlinear pulse compression, which is related to strong dispersion and soliton-like behavior in fiber gratings  相似文献

Presented is a theoretical study of double-clad Er-doped fiber power amplifier(EDFA). Two kinds of double clad fibers(DCF) with rectangular and "flower" inner clad shapes are studied, and these fibers have different coupling constants and propagation losses. We calculate the effective pump power absorption ratio along the fiber with different coupling constants from the first cladding to the doped core and with different propagation losses for the power in the inner cladding. Then the gains of the double clad Er-doped fiber amplifiers versus fiber lengths are calculated using the EDFA model based on propagation and rate equations of a homogeneous, two-level medium.  相似文献

This paper investigates a novel type of optical fiber which is composed of three portions: the core, inner cladding, and outer cladding. It is assumed that the core has the largest refractive index of the three, and the outer cladding index is the next largest. When the index difference between the core and the inner cladding is much larger than that between the outer cladding and the inner, the new fiber has a stronger confinement property than a usual singly clad fiber in the single-mode region. It is also assumed that the inner-cladding thickness is larger than or comparable with the core radius. This confinement is the origin of the following three properties of potential importance in single-mode optical communication. 1) As compared with a singly clad fiber, the largest core area for single-mode operation is roughly twice. 2) The group delay arising from waveguide characteristics has an opposite sign against that of typical glass dispersion. (Singly clad fiber has a dispersion of the same sign.) 3) The field is much more tightly confined within the core as compared with a singly clad fiber. This minimizes extra attenuation due to absorption in the cladding.  相似文献
