The distinction between a priori and a posteriori knowledge has been the subject of an enormous amount of discussion, but the literature is biased against recognizing the intimate relationship between these forms of knowledge. For instance, it seems to be almost impossible to find a sample of pure a priori or a posteriori knowledge. In this paper, it will be suggested that distinguishing between a priori and a posteriori is more problematic than is often suggested, and that a priori and a posteriori resources are in fact used in parallel. We will define this relationship between a priori and a posteriori knowledge as the bootstrapping relationship. As we will see, this relationship gives us reasons to seek for an altogether novel definition of a priori and a posteriori knowledge. Specifically, we will have to analyse the relationship between a priori knowledge and a priori reasoning, and it will be suggested that the latter serves as a more promising starting point for the analysis of aprioricity. We will also analyse a number of examples from the natural sciences and consider the role of a priori reasoning in these examples. The focus of this paper is the analysis of the concepts of a priori and a posteriori knowledge rather than the epistemic domain of a posteriori and a priori justification.  相似文献

A comparative study of aggregation error bounds for the generalized transportation problem is presented. A priori and a posteriori error bounds were derived and a computational study was performed to (a) test the correlation between the a priori, the a posteriori, and the actual error and (b) quantify the difference of the error bounds from the actual error. Based on the results we conclude that calculating the a priori error bound can be considered as a useful strategy to select the appropriate aggregation level. The a posteriori error bound provides a good quantitative measure of the actual error.  相似文献

Particularism renders the options for a sound moral epistemology few and the prospects dim. One leading approach treats basic knowledge of particular cases as derivable from an a priori moral principle and a posteriori knowledge of the contingent non-moral facts to which the principle applies. Particularists must forgo this approach because it requires principles. Yet a purely a posteriori moral epistemology is also implausible, especially when combined with particularism. Particularists such as Jonathan Dancy are thus led to the view that our basic moral knowledge is a priori knowledge of contingent moral facts. We argue that this epistemology is unsound. While some cases of a priori knowledge of (even deeply) contingent facts may be defensible, they are not sufficient for particularist purposes. Moreover, neither Dancy’s appeal to the distinction between positive and negative dependence nor his discussion of intuitive examples provides sufficient support for this epistemology.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss with guaranteed a priori and a posteriori error estimates of finite element approximations for not necessarily coercive linear second order Dirichlet problems. Here, ‘guaranteed’ means we can get the error bounds in which all constants included are explicitly given or represented as a numerically computable form. Using the invertibility condition of concerning elliptic operator, guaranteed a priori and a posteriori error estimates are formulated. This kind of estimates plays essential and important roles in the numerical verification of solutions for nonlinear elliptic problems. Several numerical examples that confirm the actual effectiveness of the method are presented.  相似文献

This paper investigates some epistemic properties that distinguish understanding from knowledge. In particular, the focus is on how to spell out the notion of grasping the relationships between propositions that constitute objectual understanding: what kind of epistemic access is required for grasping to occur and to what extent is the act of grasping voluntary? A modest form of access is suggested as an answer to the first question and a largely negative answer to the second. The worry that my suggestion is too permissive in crediting subjects with understanding is addressed. The results are then finally briefly contrasted to Ernest Sosa’s notion of knowing full well where one contrast precisely concerns the voluntary character of the respective epistemic states.  相似文献

Summary. In this paper, we derive quasi-norm a priori and a posteriori error estimates for the Crouzeix-Raviart type finite element approximation of the p-Laplacian. Sharper a priori upper error bounds are obtained. For instance, for sufficiently regular solutions we prove optimal a priori error bounds on the discretization error in an energy norm when . We also show that the new a posteriori error estimates provide improved upper and lower bounds on the discretization error. For sufficiently regular solutions, the a posteriori error estimates are further shown to be equivalent on the discretization error in a quasi-norm. An approach to the sensitivity analysis of local a posteriori inference equations in algebraic Bayesian networks is proposed in this paper. Some basic definitions and formulations are briefly given and the development of the matrix-vector a posteriori inference approach is considered. Some cases of the propagation of deterministic and stochastic evidence in a knowledge pattern with scalar estimates of component truth probabilities over quantum propositions are described. For each of the considered cases, the necessary metrics are introduced, and some transformations resulting in four linear programming problems are performed. The solution of these problems gives the required estimates. In addition, two theorems postulating the covering estimates for the considered parameters are formulated. The results obtained in this work prove the correct application of models and create a basis for the sensitivity analysis of local and global probabilistic-logic inference equations.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the a posteriori error analysis of discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for the steady and nonsteady first order hyperbolic problems with inflow boundary conditions. We establish several residual-based a posteriori error estimators which provide global upper bounds and a local lower bound on the error. Further, for nonsteady problem, we construct a fully discrete discontinuous finite element scheme and derive the a posteriori error estimators which yield global upper bound on the error in time and space. Our a posteriori error analysis is based on the mesh-dependent a priori estimates for the first order hyperbolic problems. These a posteriori error analysis results can be applied to develop the adaptive discontinuous finite element methods.  相似文献

A priori error estimates for the Rosenau equation, which is a K-dV like Rosenau equation modelled to describe the dynamics of dense discrete systems, have been studied by one of the authors. But since a priori error bounds contain the unknown solution and its derivatives, it is not effective to control error bounds with only a given step size. Thus we need to estimate a posteriori errors in order to control accuracy of approximate solutions using variable step sizes. A posteriori error estimates of the Rosenau equation are obtained by a discontinuous Galerkin method and the stability analysis is discussed for the dual problem. Numerical results on a posteriori error and wave propagation are given, which are obtained by using various spatial and temporal meshes controlled automatically by a posteriori error.  相似文献

In this article, we consider a regularized iterative scheme for solving nonlinear ill-posed problems. The convergence analysis and error estimates are derived by choosing the regularization parameter according to both a priori and a posteriori methods. The iterative scheme is stopped using an a posteriori stopping rule, and we prove that the scheme converges to the solution of the well-known Lavrentiev scheme. The salient features of the proposed scheme are: (i) convergence and error estimate analysis require only weaker assumptions compared to standard assumptions followed in literature, and (ii) consideration of an adaptive a posteriori stopping rule and a parameter choice strategy that gives the same convergence rate as that of an a priori method without using the smallness assumption, the source condition. The above features are very useful from theory and application points of view. We also supply the numerical results to illustrate that the method is adaptable. Further, we compare the numerical result of the proposed method with the standard approach to demonstrate that our scheme is stable and achieves good computational output.  相似文献

We present constructive a posteriori estimates of inverse operators for initial value problems in linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) on a bounded interval. Here, “constructive” indicates that we can obtain bounds of the operator norm in which all constants are explicitly given or are represented in a numerically computable form. In general, it is difficult to estimate these inverse operators a priori. We, therefore, propose a technique for obtaining a posteriori estimates by using Galerkin approximation of inverse operators. This type of estimation will play an important role in the numerical verification of solutions for initial value problems in nonlinear ODEs as well as for parabolic initial boundary value problems.  相似文献

In this paper,we introduce a modified Landweber iteration to solve the sideways parabolic equation,which is an inverse heat conduction problem(IHCP) in the quarter plane and is severely ill-posed.We shall show that our method is of optimal order under both a priori and a posteriori stopping rule.Furthermore,if we use the discrepancy principle we can avoid the selection of the a priori bound.Numerical examples show that the computation effect is satisfactory.  相似文献

According to a posteriori physicalism, phenomenal properties are physical properties, despite the unbridgeable cognitive gap that holds between phenomenal concepts and physical concepts. Current debates about a posteriori physicalism turn on what I call “the perspicuity principle”: it is impossible for a suitably astute cognizer to possess concepts of a certain sort—viz., narrow concepts—without being able to tell whether the referents of those concepts are the same or different. The perspicuity principle tends to strike a posteriori physicalists as implausibly rationalistic; further, a posteriori physicalists maintain that even if the principle is applicable to many narrow concepts, phenomenal concepts have unique features that render them inferentially isolated from other narrow concepts (a dialectical move known as “the phenomenal concept strategy” (PCS)). I argue, on the contrary, that the case for the perspicuity principle is quite strong. Moreover, not only have versions of the PCS repeatedly failed, likely, all versions will, given the strange combination of lucidity and opacity that the PCS has to juggle (it requires that we come up with a lucid explanation of an irremediable cognitive blindspot). I conclude that a posteriori physicalists currently lack a principled objection to classic anti-physicalist arguments.  相似文献
