We investigate a new application of the well-known spread spectrum code division multiple access (SS-CDMA) techniques to multimedia services related to the development of the next-generation wireless mobile networks interconnecting with a wireline ATM-based broadband network. Such services allow users to share novel multimedia applications without any geographical restrictions. However, since the mobile radio channel has a fixed limited bandwidth, the traditional SS-CDMA system may not be sufficient to accommodate the variable bit rate (VBR) multimedia services requested by multiple mobile users simultaneously. Moreover, the traffic load at the base station can change dynamically due to the time-varying throughput requirement of these requested multimedia services. To tackle this difficulty, a multicode CDMA (MC-CDMA) technique is proposed to provide multirate multimedia services by varying the number of spreading codes assigned to each user in order to meet its throughput requirement. In MC-CDMA, a spreading code can be used to transmit information at a basic bit rate. Users (video or data) who need higher transmission rates can use multiple codes in parallel. Meanwhile, the maximum available number of codes in the MC-CDMA system is still limited. Hence, a cost-effective dynamic code allocation scheme has then been proposed to dynamically assign an appropriate number of codes to each user for achieving the maximum resource utilization for multiuser multimedia services via the mobile radio channel. A rich set of broadband access copper technologies is available in the market today, and more are coming out of the laboratories, rapidly moving to standardization. The most likely future scenario will be one where many different technologies coexist. This multi-access-technology paradigm poses an interesting internetworking problem where interoperability and capability to support today's and future user services play a major role in the design of a network architecture. This article begins with an overview of current and new xDSL access technologies to continue describing an access network design that harmonizes the interconnection between PON, xDSL, and native ATM transport technologies. The use of ATM technology for the interface to the broadband access and transport networks is then presented and justified. The article continues studying the protocol architectures proposed for access to network service providers, considered a driver application for broadband access deployment. This paper focuses on recent trends and issues in the EU-25 countries related to one key broadband application area: digital media ‘content’ applications. It draws upon recently completed research addressing current and future uses and applications of broadband in the EU-25 area.

The paper presents key findings from the BEACON project concerning the broadband content trends and issues in the EU-25 countries. First, the paper briefly considers recent literature on broadband and digital media innovations as well as the policy context in Europe, which has an important influence on framing supports for innovation in content and digital media. Next, it addresses a number of key issues that impact upon the creation of content services. These include the high cost of content production and the difficulty of forming attractive business cases given the uncertainties related to user demand, and the IPR and copyright regimes. It will also consider users’ patterns of engagement with broadband content and emerging user applications. Next, the paper discusses whether broadband is reaching a ‘tipping point’, whereby broadband access is becoming the norm and in the next five years we will see the emergence of innovative, dynamic content services. The paper considers whether recent moves by three sets of significant actors (media corporations, the advertising sector, and EC regulators) could be early signs of a tipping point in favour of the creation of and more focused support for broadband content services.  相似文献

There are two methods for mobile advertising: SMS and broadband advertisement. Previously SMS is the most common way of mobile advertising. Previous researches on consumer acceptance have been focused on SMS advertisement. This paper aims to identify factors that influence consumer’s intention to accept mobile broadband services with add-on advertising. As theory of reasoned action (TRA) has been widely used to explain user behavioral intension in previous researches, we proposed extended TRA by including six factors for testing adoption of mobile broadband services with add-on advertising: Perceived Value, Contextual Awareness, Trust, Solidarity, Familiarity and Effect. The proposed model has been tested on selected Thai mobile broadband user communities. The results from 61 valid responses during 2 weeks time period found that attitude toward mobile advertising and subjective norms have weak significance on user intention to accept add-on advertising. It is also found that Perceived value has higher significant than other proposed factors. With the proposed model, it is possible for advertisers to create an effective and pertinent mobile broadband advertising.  相似文献

Multiple-wavelength optical orthogonal codes (MWOOCs) with autocorrelation sidelobes and cross-correlation values of both at most one were recently proposed for wavelength-time optical code-division multiple-access (O-CDMA) systems. The codes have cardinality as a quadratic function of the number of wavelengths and find applications in high bit-rate O-CDMA systems with broadband supercontinuum lasers, in which the number of available wavelengths is larger than the number of time slots. To support multimedia services with different bit-rate and quality-of-service requirements, a new class of multiple-length constant-weight MWOOCs with autocorrelation sidelobes of zero and cross correlations of at most one is constructed algebraically in this paper. The performance of these new codes in an O-CDMA system with double-media services is analyzed. In contrary to conventional single-length codes, our study shows that the performance of these multiple-length codes improves as the code length decreases. This unique property supports "prioritization" in O-CDMA.  相似文献
