SiC–TiB2 composites with up to 50 vol% TiB2 were fabricated by in-situ reaction between TiO2, B4C and C. The densification of the uniaxially pressed samples was done using pressureless sintering in the presence of sintering aids consisting of Al2O3 and Y2O3. The influence of the volume fraction of TiB2 and sintering temperature on density and fracture toughness was examined. It was found that fracture toughness is strongly affected by the volume fraction of TiB2. The presence of TiB2 particles suppresses the grain growth of SiC and facilitates different toughening mechanisms to operate which, in turn, increases fracture toughness of the composite. The highest value for fracture toughness of 5.7 MPa m1/2 was measured in samples with 30 vol% TiB2 sintered at 1940 °C.  相似文献

High-performance B4C composites toughened by TiB2-SiC agglomerates were fabricated via reactive hot pressing with B4C, TiC and Si as raw materials. The TiB2-SiC composite serves as a composite toughening phase formed in the B4C matrix through an in situ reaction; its agglomerates are composed of interlocked TiB2 and SiC, which can remarkably improve the toughness of the B4C composites. The Vickers hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the B4C-TiB2-SiC composite reached 35.18 ± 0.45 GPa, 567 ± 14 MPa, and 6.38 ± 0.18 MPa m1/2 respectively. The special toughening structure of the TiB2-SiC composite introduced into B4C ceramics was evaluated for the first time in this study.  相似文献

ZrC-based composites were consolidated from ZrC and TiB2 powders by the Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) technique at 1685 °C and 1700 °C for 300 s under 40-50-60 MPa. Densification, crystalline phases, microstructure, mechanical properties and oxidation behavior of the composites were investigated. The sintered bodies were composed of a (Zr,Ti)C solid solution and a ZrB phase. The densification behaviors of the composites were improved by increasing the TiB2 content and applied pressure. The highest value of hardness, 21.64 GPa, was attained with the addition of 30 vol% TiB2. Oxidation tests were performed at 900 °C for 2 h and the formation of ZrO2, TiO2 and B2O3 phases were identified by using XRD.  相似文献

Samples of B4C–TiB2 eutectic are laser processed to produce composites with varying microstructural scales. The eutectic materials exhibit both load dependent and load independent hardness regimes with a transition occurring between 4 and 5 N indentation load. The load-independent hardness of eutectics with a microstructural scale smaller than 1 μm is about 31 GPa, and the indentation fracture toughness (5–10 N indenter load) of the eutectics is 2.47–4.76 MPa m1/2. Indentation-induced cracks are deflected by TiB2 lamellae, and indentation-induced spallation is reduced in the B4C–TiB2 eutectic compared to monolithic B4C. Indentation-induced amorphization in monolithic B4C and the B4C phase of the eutectic is detected using Raman spectroscopy. Sub-surface damage is observed using TEM, including microcracking and amorphization damage in B4C and B4C–TiB2 eutectics. Dislocations are observed in the TiB2 phase of eutectics with an interlamellar spacing of 1.9 μm.  相似文献

TiN–TiB2 composites were fabricated by spark plasma sintering at 1773–2573 K. Effects of TiN and TiB2 content on relative density, microstructure, and mechanical properties were investigated. Above 2373 K, TiN–TiB2 composites exhibited relative densities over 95%. A high density of 99.7% was obtained at 2573 K with 20–30 vol% TiB2. Shrinkage of the TiN–70 vol% TiB2 composite was the highest at 1573–2473 K. For the TiN–70 vol% TiB2 composite prepared at 1973–2373 K, TiN grains were small, while at 2573 K, TiB2 became a continuous matrix, in which irregular-shaped TiN dispersed. hBN was formed in the TiN–TiB2 composite containing 50–60 vol% TiB2 above 2373 K. The maximum Vickers hardness and fracture toughness obtained for the TiN–80 vol% TiB2 composite sintered at 2473 K was 26.3 GPa and 4.5 MPa m1/2, respectively.  相似文献

Boron carbide (B4C)/TiC/Mo ceramic composites with different content of TiC were produced by hot pressing. The effect of TiC content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites has been studied. Results showed that chemical reaction took place for this system during hot pressing sintering, and resulted in a B4C/TiB2/Mo composite with high density and improved mechanical properties compared to monolithic B4C ceramic. Densification rates of the B4C/TiC/Mo composites were found to be affected by additions of TiC. Increasing TiC content led to increase in the densification rates of the composites. The sintering temperature was lowered from 2150 °C for monolithic B4C to 1950 °C for the B4C/TiC/Mo composites. The fracture toughness, flexural strength, and hardness of the composites increased with increasing TiC content up to 10 wt.%. The maximum values of fracture toughness, flexural strength, and hardness are 4.3 MPa m1/2, 695 MPa, and 25.0 GPa, respectively.  相似文献

The paper discusses the development of a new material system for interconnect application in Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) based on TiC–Ti3Al. Nano-sized TiC powders utilized in this research were synthesized using carbon coated TiO2 precursors from a patented process. The pressureless sintering of TiC–Ti3Al in a vacuum was applied at temperatures between 1100 °C and 1500 °C and content of Ti3Al was varied in the range of 10–40 wt%. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) were used for phase evaluation and sintering behavior. Relative density increased markedly with increasing sintering temperature because of grain growth and formation of the Ti3AlC2 secondary phase. Dense products (>95% TD) were prepared from nanosized TiC powders with 10 and 20 wt% Ti3Al, but with about 8 to 10% porosity for 30 and 40 wt% Ti3Al. The mechanical properties were determined from Vickers hardness and fracture toughness calculations. Vickers hardness decreased and fracture toughness increased with increasing Ti3Al content. The electrical conductivity and oxidation behavior of TiC–Ti3Al composites were investigated to evaluate the feasibility for SOFC interconnect application. The electrical conductivity measurements in the air at 800 °C for 100 h were made using the Kelvin 4-wire method.  相似文献

The processing, microstructure, and mechanical properties of zirconium diboride-boron carbide (ZrB2-B4C) ceramics were characterized. Ceramics containing nominally 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 vol% B4C were hot-pressed to full density at 1900 °C. The ZrB2 grain size decreased from 4 to 2 µm and B4C inclusion size increased from 3 to 5 µm for B4C additions of 5 and 40 vol% B4C, respectively. Elastic modulus decreased from 525 to 515 GPa and Vickers hardness increased from 15 to 21 GPa as the B4C content increased from 5 to 40 vol%, respectively, following trends predicted using linear rules of mixtures. Flexure strength and fracture toughness both increased with increasing B4C content. Fracture toughness increased from 4.1 MPa m½ at 5 vol% B4C to 5.3 MPa m½ at 40 vol% B4C additions. Flexure strength was 450 MPa with a 5 vol% B4C addition, increasing to 590 MPa for a 40 vol% addition. The critical flaw size was calculated to be ~30 µm for all compositions, and analysis of the fracture surfaces indicated that strength was controlled by edge flaws generated by machining induced sub-surface damage. Increasing amounts of B4C added to ZrB2 led to increasing hardness due to the higher hardness of B4C compared to ZrB2 and increased crack deflection. Additions of B4C also lead to increases in fracture toughness due to increased crack deflection and intergranular fracture.  相似文献

Dense Ti3AlC2/TiB2 composites were successfully fabricated from B4C/TiC/Ti/Al powders by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microstructure, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites were investigated. The experimental results indicate that the Vickers hardness increased with the increase in TiB2 content. The maximum flexural strength (700 ± 10 MPa) and fracture toughness (7.0 ± 0.2 MPa m1/2) were achieved through addition of 10 vol.% TiB2, however, a slight decrease in the other mechanical properties was observed with TiB2 addition higher than 10 vol.%, which is believed to be due to TiB2 agglomeration.  相似文献

The nanocomposite was produced via phenolic resin infiltrating into a carbon nanotube (CNT) buckypaper preform containing B4C fillers and amorphous Si particles followed by an in-situ reaction between resin-derived carbon and Si to form SiC matrix. The buckypaper preform combined with the in-situ reaction avoided the phase segregation and increased significantly the volume fraction of CNTs. The nanocomposites prepared by this new process were dense with the open porosities less than 6%. A suitable CNT–SiC bonding was achieved by creating a B4C modified interphase layer between CNTs and SiC. The hardness increased from 2.83 to 8.58 GPa, and the indentation fracture toughness was estimated to increase from 2.80 to 9.96 MPa m1/2, respectively, by the reinforcing effect of B4C. These nanocomposites became much more electrically conductive with high loading level of CNTs. The in-plane electrical resistivity decreased from 124 to 74.4 μΩ m by introducing B4C fillers.  相似文献

Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 in situ composites with different Al2O3 contents were successfully synthesized from the powder mixture of Ti, TiC, Al and TiO2 by a reactive hot-pressing method at 1350 °C. The effect of Al2O3 on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated in detail. The results indicate that the as-fabricated products mainly consist of Ti3AlC2, Al2O3 and a small amount of TiC. With increasing the Al2O3 content, the flexural strength of Ti3AlC2/Al2O3 composites increase gradually, the fracture toughness reaches the peak value of 8.21 MPa m1/2 as the Al2O3 content increasing to 9 wt%, the hardness attains the maximum value of 10.16 GPa for 12 wt% Al2O3. The strengthening mechanism of the composites was also discussed.  相似文献

A ceramic particulate composite composed of oxide, and carbide ceramics was found to have high strength, hardness, and fracture toughness values. A composition consisting of Al2O3 with 15 vol% SiC and 15 vol% B4C additions was produced by hot-pressing at 1650 °C for 30 min, with full density reached after ~5 min at temperature. Both WB and WB2 were observed, with the W source presumably an impurity from WC milling media, and Al18B4O33 was also detected following densification. Strength was ~880 MPa, which is greater than values reported for comparable composites of Al2O3 containing 30 vol% SiC or B4C. Vickers hardness was ~21 GPa, and fracture toughness was ~4.5 MPa m½, comparable to values reported for the binary mixtures. The calculated critical flaw size of the material was similar to the size of the SiC/B4C clusters and microcracking at grain boundaries. The latter resulting from thermal expansion mismatch between the Al2O3 matrix and SiC/B4C reinforcing phases.  相似文献

Al2O3-based composites using exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnPs) have been developed by powder metallurgy (PM) route using both conventional as well as spark plasma sintering (SPS) processes. Al2O3-0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 3 and 5 vol% xGnP composites have been developed, and the effect of the addition of xGnP on the density, hardness, fracture toughness and wear behaviour of the various Al2O3-xGnP composites have been analyzed. Conventional sintering was done at a temperature of 1650 °C for 2, 3 and 4 h in inert atmosphere, whereas SPS was carried out at 1450 °C under 50 MPa pressure for 5 min. A uniform dispersion of the xGnP in the Al2O3 matrix was observed in the composites upto the addition of 3 vol% xGnP. Results indicate that a significant improvement in hardness, wear resistance and fracture toughness of the composites could be achieved by using xGnP as nanofiller. The hardness and fracture toughness of the composites developed by both conventional sintering and SPS show an increase upto the addition of 3 and 0.8 vol% xGnP respectively. The wear resistance of the composites also shows significant improvement upto the addition of 3 vol% xGnP. The composites developed by SPS have been found to possess superior mechanical properties as compared to the composites developed by conventional sintering. The improvement in the mechanical properties can be attributed to the strong interaction between the xGnP and the Al2O3 matrix at the interfaces and to the toughening mechanisms such as crack bridging and crack deflection.  相似文献

Highly dense electrically conductive silicon carbide (SiC)–(0, 10, 20, and 30 vol%) titanium boride (TiB2) composites with 10 vol% of Y2O3–AlN additives were fabricated at a relatively low temperature of 1800°C by spark plasma sintering in nitrogen atmosphere. Phase analysis of sintered composites reveals suppressed β→α phase transformation due to low sintering temperature, nitride additives, and nitrogen sintering atmosphere. With increase in TiB2 content, hardness increased from 20.6 to 23.7 GPa and fracture toughness increased from 3.6 to 5.5 MPa m1/2. The electrical conductivity increased to a remarkable 2.72 × 103 (Ω cm)–1 for SiC–30 vol% TiB2 composites due to large amount of conductive reinforcement, additive composition, and sintering in nitrogen atmosphere. The successful electrical discharge machining illustrates potential of the sintered SiC–TiB2 composites toward extending the application regime of conventional SiC-based ceramics.  相似文献

B4C–SiC intergranular/intragranular nanocomposites with high hardness and high toughness were fabricated through mechanochemical processing with B4C, Si, and graphite powders and subsequent hot pressing without any sintering aid. The milled powders are composed of stacking-disordered SiC and nanocrystalline B4C. Most nano/micron-sized SiC particles are homogeneously dispersed in B4C matrix, and some nano-sized SiC and B4C particles are embedded into B4C grains to form an intergranular/intragranular structure. The disordered characteristic of the milled powders is the essential factor for the formation of the intragranular structure, sudden densification within the narrow temperature range (1700–1900 °C), and the preparation of dense samples under a relatively low temperature (1900 °C). The relative density, Vickers hardness, and fracture toughness of the samples sintered at 1950 °C are 98.6%, 34.3 GPa, and 6.0 MPa m1/2, respectively. The intergranular/intragranular structure plays an important role in improving fracture toughness and hardness of the composites.  相似文献

High electrical resistance and low fracture toughness of B4C ceramics are 2 of the primary challenges for further machining of B4C ceramics. This report illustrates that these 2 challenges can be overcome simultaneously using core‐shell B4C‐TiB2&TiC powder composites, which were prepared by molten‐salt method using B4C (10 ± 0.6 μm) and Ti powders as raw materials without co‐ball milling. Finally, the near completely dense (98%) B4C‐TiB2 interlayer ceramic composites were successfully fabricated by subsequent pulsed electric current sintering (PECS). The uniform conductive coating on the surface of B4C particles improved the mass transport by electro‐migration in PECS and thus enhanced the sinterability of the composites at a comparatively low temperature of 1700°C. The mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of the ceramic composites were investigated. The interconnected conductive TiB2 phase at the grain boundary of B4C significantly improved the properties of B4C‐TiB2 ceramic composites: in the case of B4C‐29.8 vol% TiB2 composite, the fracture toughness of 4.38 MPa·m1/2, the electrical conductivity of 4.06 × 105 S/m, and a high thermal conductivity of 33 W/mK were achieved.  相似文献

A polycrystalline eutectic B4C–TiB2 composite was prepared by spark plasma sintering. The starting eutectic powder was obtained by mechanical grinding of the directionally solidified eutectic B4C–TiB2 alloy. The microstructure of the polycrystalline composite exhibited randomly oriented eutectic grains with an average size of about 50–100 μm. Eutectic grains consisted of boron carbide matrix reinforced by titanium diboride inclusions. The secondary eutectic structure in the grain boundary is formed at sintering temperature higher than 1700 °C. XRD analysis revealed that the eutectic B4C–TiB2 composite consist mainly of B4C and TiB2 phases. The measured Vickers hardness was in the range of 32.35–54.18 GPa and the average fracture toughness of the samples was as high as 4.81 MPa m1/2. The bending strengths of the composite evaluated at room temperature and at 1600 °C were 230 and 190 MPa, respectively.  相似文献

Titanium diboride (TiB2) is a ceramic material with high mechanical resistance, chemical stability, and hardness at high temperatures. Sintering this material requires high temperatures and long sintering times. Non-conventional sintering techniques such as spark plasma sintering (SPS) can densify materials considered difficult to sinter. In this study, TiB2–AIN (aluminum nitride) composites were sintered by using the SPS technique at different sintering temperatures (1500 °C, 1600 °C, 1700 °C, 1800 °C, and 1900 °C). x-ray diffraction was used to identify the phases in the composites. mechanical properties such as hardness and indentation fracture toughness was obtained using a vickers indenter. Different toughening mechanisms were identified, and good densification results were obtained using shorter times and lower temperatures than those previously reported.  相似文献

This paper reports the fabrication of SiC toughened by in situ synthesized TiB2 based on pressure-less sintering technique using TiO2, B4C, C and SiC as starting materials. The process conditions were investigated in detail, including the pre-sintering temperatures, carbon contents, differently sized TiO2 powders, TiB2 volume contents, final sintering temperature and time. These conditions were found to have great influence on the TiB2 toughened SiC in terms of relative density, TiB2 particle size and fracture toughness. Homogeneous dispersion of in situ synthesized TiB2 secondary phase was confirmed to enhance the KIC of the SiC matrix. The KIC of SiC toughened by in situ synthesized TiB2 (15 vol%) reaches 6.3 MPa m1/2, which is among the highest values reported so far on TiB2 reinforced SiC composites based on the pressure-less sintering technique using TiO2 as Ti source.  相似文献

A TiB2–Ti3AlC2 ceramic was manufactured by spark plasma sintering at 1900 °C temperature for 7 min soaking time under 30 MPa biaxial pressure. The role of Ti3AlC2 additive on the microstructure development, densification behavior, phase evolution, and hardness of the ceramic composite were studied. The phase characterization and microstructural investigations unveiled that the Ti3AlC2 MAX phase decomposes at the initial stages of the sintering. The in-situ formed phases, induced by the decomposition of Ti3AlC2 additive, were identified and scrutinized by XRD and FESEM/EDS techniques as well as thermodynamics principles. The sintered TiB2–Ti3AlC2 ceramic approached a near full density of ~99% and a hardness of ~28 GPa. The densification mechanism and sintering phenomena were discussed and graphically illustrated.  相似文献
