Over the last few years, the addition of small amounts of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to construction materials has become of great interest, since it enhances some of the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of the cement. In this sense, single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs, respectively) can be incorporated into cement to achieve the above-mentioned improved features. Thus, the current study presents the results of the addition of SWCNTs and MWCNTs on the microstructure and the physical properties of the cement paste. Density was measured through He pycnometry and the mass change was studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The microstructure and the phases were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Finally, the electrical conductivity for different CNT concentrations was measured, and an exponential increase of the conductivity with concentration was observed. This last result opens the possibility for these materials to be used in a high variety of fields, such as space intelligent systems with novel electrical and electronic applications.  相似文献

Textile-reinforced concrete (TRC) is a material consisting of high-performance concrete (HPC) and tensile reinforcement comprised of carbon roving with epoxy resin matrix. However, the problem of low epoxy resin resistance at higher temperatures persists. In this work, an alternative to the epoxy resin matrix, a non-combustible cement suspension (cement milk) which has proven stability at elevated temperatures, was evaluated. In the first part of the work, microscopic research was carried out to determine the distribution of particle sizes in the cement suspension. Subsequently, five series of plate samples differing in the type of cement and the method of textile reinforcement saturation were designed and prepared. Mechanical experiments (four-point bending tests) were carried out to verify the properties of each sample type. It was found that the highest efficiency of carbon roving saturation was achieved by using finer ground cement (CEM 52.5) and the pressure saturation method. Moreover, this solution also exhibited the best results in the four-point bending test. Finally, the use of CEM 52.5 in the cement matrix appears to be a feasible variant for TRC constructions that could overcome problems with its low temperature resistance.  相似文献

The growth of the construction industry has led to the greater consumption of natural resources, which has a direct or indirect negative impact on the environment. To mitigate this, recycled or waste materials are being used as a partial substitute in the manufacture of concrete. Among these waste materials is cement kiln dust (CKD), which is produced during cement production. This study investigated the potential benefits of replacing part of the cement with CKD in two construction applications, i.e., plain concrete and cement blocks. This reflects positively on cost, energy, and the environment, since putting CKD in a landfill damages agricultural soil and plant respiration. In this study, an experimental program was carried out to study how replacing various percentages of ordinary portland cement (OPC) with CKD affected the compressive strengths, the tensile strengths, and the air contents of concrete and cement blocks. Although the results showed that the compressive and tensile strengths decreased as the amount of CKD increased, the air content of the concrete increased, which showed that 5% CKD was suitable for such applications. The results were used to propose two equations that approximate the concrete and cement block compressive strengths according to the CKD replacement percentage.  相似文献

The impact of aircraft on airport pavements is varied and closely related to their operational durability. The article presents the impact of the annealing process related to the forced impact of airplanes on airport pavements. The composition of cement concrete with ceramic dust, which is characterized by increased thermal resistance, has been proposed. Two research cycles were programmed, differentiated by the annealing scheme and the way in which the temperature influences the annealing time. Samples stored at a temperature of 20 ± 2 °C were subjected to testing. The tests were carried out for two diagrams: A and B. The first—diagram A—included the continuous impact of the flue gas stream on the samples for a period of 350 min with a test step every 25 min. For the second—diagram B—the samples were alternately heated (1 min) and cooled (15 min). The influence of the proposed pavement mix on changes in the internal structure of cement concrete and the increase in its resistance to high temperatures was determined. In the microstructure of the CC-1 concrete matrix, it was found that there were plate-granular portlandite crystals up to 10 µm in size and ettringite crystals with a length of 8 µm. In the CC-2 concrete, the ettringite crystals were less numerous and had a length of up to 5 µm, there were also continuous contact zones between the aggregate grains and the cement matrix (diagrams A). The alternating annealing/cooling (diagram B) resulted in the ettringite crystals in the CC-1 matrix being up to 10 µm long, and in the CC-2 concrete up to 7 µm long. The contact zone between the aggregate grain and the matrix in CC-2 concrete was continuous, and the microcracks in CC-1 concrete were up to 8 nm. Regardless of the heating diagram, in the surface zone, there were larger microcracks in the CC-1 concrete than in the CC-2 concrete. For diagram A they were 14 µm and 4 µm and for diagram B they were 35 µm and 5 µm, respectively. It was found that concrete with ceramic dust is characterized by a lower and more stable temperature increase. In scheme A, the average temperature increase on the heated surface ranged from 46 °C to 79.5 °C for CC-1 concrete, and from 33.3 °C to 61.3 °C for CC-2 concrete. However, in scheme B, the temperature after 350 heating cycles for CC-1 concrete increased to 129.8 °C, and for CC-2 concrete to 116.6 °C. After the cooling period, the temperature of CC-1 and CC-2 concrete was comparable and amounted to 76.4 C and 76.3 °C, respectively. CC-2 concrete heats to lower values, and favorable changes in internal structure translate into higher strength and durability (after 350 heating cycles according to scheme A, the strength of CC-1 concrete was 67.1 MPa and of CC-2 concrete 83.9 MPa, while in scheme B, respectively, 55.4 MPa for CC-1 and 75 MPa for CC-2).  相似文献

The aim of this work was to reduce the carbon footprint of cement concrete by using multi-component cement with a high content of blast furnace slag. The analysis consisted of comparing the properties of the concrete mix and the hardened concrete made of the CEM I 42.5 R-NA cement commonly used in Poland and the CEM III cement with a large amount of blast furnace slag. The tests used cement in a constant amount of 380 kg/m3, granite aggregate of 2/8, 8/16, 16/22 mm and sand of 0/2 mm. As part of this project, detailed tests of the concrete mix and hardened concrete were carried out in terms of compressive, bending, fracture and frost resistance after 150 cycles of freezing and thawing, and the pore structure in hardened concrete was assessed according to PN-EN 480-11. The endurance tests were performed after 7, 28 and 90 days. On the basis of the obtained results, it was found that the highest compressive strengths above 70.2 MPa were obtained for concrete with CEM III, 64.5 MPa for concrete with CEM I. Additionally, for concrete with multi-component cement, smaller drops in compressive strength were obtained and a more favorable pore distribution in hardened concrete was obtained. Concrete intended for road surfaces can be made of both CEM I and CEM III cement, as they meet the requirements of the technical specifications for roads with heavy traffic of heavy vehicles.  相似文献

Concrete sulfate attack is of great interest as it represents one of the main reasons of concrete deterioration and poor durability for concrete structures. In this research, the effect of different cement types on concrete sulfate resistance was investigated. This included three concrete classes, namely, low strength concrete, medium strength concrete, and high strength concrete. Blast furnace cement (BFC), sulfate resisting Portland cement (CEM I-SR5), and ordinary Portland cement (OPC) were used in a total of eighteen concrete mixes. Three binder contents of 250 kg/m3, 350 kg/m3, and 450 kg/m3 and a constant silica fume (SF) content were applied in this experimental study. The water/binder (w/b) ratio was varied between 0.4 and 0.8. Concrete specimens were immersed in highly severe effective sodium sulfate solutions (10,000 ppm) for 180 days after standard curing for 28 days. The fresh concrete performance was evaluated through a slump test to attain proper workability. Concrete compressive strength and mass change at 28 days and 180 days were measured before and after immersion in the solution to evaluate the long-term effect of sulfate attack on the proposed concrete durability. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis was conducted to study the concrete microstructure and its deterioration stages. The obtained results revealed that BFC cement has the best resistance to aggressive sulfate attacks. The strength deterioration of BFC cement was 3.5% with w/b of 0.4 and it increased to about 7.8% when increasing the w/b ratio to 0.6, which are comparable to other types of cement used. The findings of this research confirmed that the quality of concrete, specifically its composition of low permeability, is the best and recommended protection against sulfate attack.  相似文献

Ecological concrete could reduce the environment impacts of the tremendous construction of infrastructures due to its favorability to plant growth. Nonetheless, the alkalinity of the ecological concrete is usually too high when using ordinary Portland cement (OPC). To solve this problem, the magnesium ammonium phosphate cement (MPC) was used to prepare a novel porous ecological concrete instead of OPC. The pH value and compressive strength of MPC were analyzed and the pore structure was evaluated. The chemical composition and morphology were investigated by an X-ray diffraction test and scanning electron microscope observation. In addition, the void ratio, compressive strength and planting-growing characteristic of MPC-based porous ecological concrete were also studied. The pH value of the MPC suspension ranged from 6.8 to 8.5, which was much lower than that of OPC. The pH value of MPC gradually increased with the increment of phosphorus/magnesium molar ratio (P/M) and the compressive strength reached a maximum value of 49.2 MPa when the P/M value was 1/4. Fly ash (FA) and ground blast furnace slag (GBFS) could improve the pore structure and compressive strength; however, the pH value was slightly increased. As the paste-to-aggregate ratio increased, the void ratio of concrete gradually decreased, while the compressive strength gradually increased. The meadow grass was planted in the MPC-based ecological concrete, and the seeds germinated in one week and showed a better growth status than those planted in the OPC-based ecological concrete.  相似文献

In this research, strain-sensing and damage-sensing functional properties of cement composites have been studied on a conventional reinforced concrete (RC) beam. Carbon nanofiber (CNFCC) and fiber (CFCC) cement composites were used as sensors on a 4 m long RC beam. Different casting conditions (in situ or attached), service location (under tension or compression) and electrical contacts (embedded or superficial) were compared. Both CNFCC and CFCC were suitable as strain sensors in reversible (elastic) sensing condition testing. CNFCC showed higher sensitivities (gage factor up to 191.8), while CFCC only reached gage factors values of 178.9 (tension) or 49.5 (compression). Furthermore, damage-sensing tests were run, increasing the applied load progressively up to the RC beam failure. In these conditions, CNFCC sensors were also strain sensitive, but no damage sensing mechanism was detected for the strain levels achieved during the tests. Hence, these cement composites could act as strain sensors, even for severe damaged structures near to their collapse.  相似文献

Despite limitations to coal combustion energy production, many countries face the still-unresolved problem of utilising the wastes from fluidised bed coal combustion. One direction of rational utilisation can be using these wastes in the building materials industry. The study aimed to analyse the possibility of using fluidised bed combustion fly ashes as a partial substitute for cement in the underwater concrete (UWC). Two groups of concrete mixes were tested, containing 20 to 50% of fluidised bed combustion fly ashes. Investigations of the rheological properties of the concrete mixes and the mechanical performance of the hardened concrete confirmed the possibility of replacing cement in UWC with fluidised bed combustion fly ash up to 30% of the cement mass. The higher content of the fly ashes significantly worsens the UWC strength as well as the consistency and wash-out loss of the concrete mixes, excluding its use in underwater concreting.  相似文献

Aiming at the problem that ordinary cement concrete is subjected to damage in heavy saline soil areas in China, a new type of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete is prepared by using the gelling properties of magnesium oxychloride cement in this study, and the erosion resistance of the synthesized magnesium oxychloride cement concrete in concentrated brine of salt lakes is studied through the full immersion test. The effects of concentrated brine of salt lakes on the macroscopic, microscopic morphology, phase composition and mechanical properties of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete are investigated by means of macro-morphology, erosion depth, SEM, XRD and strength changes. The salt erosion resistance mechanism of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete is revealed. The results demonstrate that under the environment of full immersion in concentrated brine of salt lakes, there is no macroscopic phenomenon of concrete damage due to salt crystallization, and the main phase composition is basically unchanged. The microscopic morphology mostly changes from needle-rod-like to gel-like. Due to the formation of a new 5·1·8 phase on the surface layer and the increase in compactness, its compressive strength has a gradual increase trend. Based on the engineering application of magnesium oxychloride cement concrete, it is further confirmed that magnesium oxychloride cement concrete has excellent salt erosion resistance and good weather resistance, which provides theoretical support for future popularization and application.  相似文献

Concrete is well known for its compression resistance, making it suitable for any kind of construction. Several research studies show that the addition of carbon nanostructures to concrete allows for construction materials with both a higher resistance and durability, while having less porosity. Among the mentioned nanostructures are carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which consist of long cylindrical molecules with a nanoscale diameter. In this work, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been carried out, to study the effect of pristine or carboxyl functionalized CNTs inserted into a tobermorite crystal on the mechanical properties (elastic modulus and interfacial shear strength) of the resulting composites. The results show that the addition of the nanostructure to the tobermorite crystal increases the elastic modulus and the interfacial shear strength, observing a positive relation between the mechanical properties and the atomic interactions established between the tobermorite crystal and the CNT surface. In addition, functionalized CNTs present enhanced mechanical properties.  相似文献

The high pavement temperature plays an important role in the development of urban heat island (UHI) in summer. The objective of this study was to develop water retentive and thermal resistant cement concrete (WTCC) to enhance the pavement cooling effects. The WTCC was prepared by combining a water retentive material and a high aluminum refractory aggregate (RA) with porous cement concrete (PCC). Water retention capacity test, fluidity test, and compressive strength test were used to determine the composition ratio of the water retentive material. Mechanical performance and cooling effects of WTCC were evaluated by compressive and flexural strength tests and temperature monitoring test. The mass ratios of fly ash, silica fume, cement, and water in the water retentive material were determined as 65:35:15:63.9. The compressive strength and the flexural strength of WTCC after 28 days curing were 30.4 MPa and 4.6 MPa, respectively. Compared with stone mastic asphalt (SMA) mixture, PCC, and water retentive cement concrete (WCC), surface temperature of WTCC decreased by 11.4 °C, 5.5 °C, and 4.1 °C, respectively, and the internal temperatures of WTCC decreased by 10.3 °C, 6.1 °C, and 4.6 °C, respectively. The water retentive material has benefits of strength improvements and temperature reduction for WTCC. Based on the results, WTCC proved to have superior cooling effects and the potential to efficiently mitigate the UHI effects and be used in medium traffic roads.  相似文献

Nanothread with a diameter as small as one hundred nanometers was manufactured under a scanning electron microscope. Made directly from carbon nanotubes, and inheriting their superior electrical and mechanical properties, nanothread may be the world’s smallest man-made fiber. The smallest thread that can be spun using a bench-top spinning machine is about 5 microns in diameter. Nanothread is a new material building block that can be used at the nanoscale or plied to form yarn for applications at the micro and macro scales. Preliminary electrical and mechanical properties of nanothread were measured. The resistivity of nanothread is less than 10−5 Ω∙m. The strength of nanothread is greater than 0.5 GPa. This strength was obtained from measurements using special glue that cures in an electron microscope. The glue weakened the thread, thus further work is needed to obtain more accurate measurements. Nanothread will have broad applications in enabling electrical components, circuits, sensors, and tiny machines. Yarn can be used for various macroscale applications including lightweight antennas, composites, and cables.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash from a cogeneration plant on the physical and mechanical properties and durability of cement concrete. Part of the cement in concrete mixtures tested was replaced with 0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, and 12% by weight of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash. Concrete modified with 6% of bottom ash had a higher density (2323 kg/m3), compressive strength at 28 days (36.1 MPa), ultrasonic pulse velocity (3980 m/s), and lower water absorption rate (3.93%). The tests revealed that frost resistance, determined in all-sided testing directions, of concrete modified with 6%, 9%, and 12% of bottom ash added by weight of cement corresponds to strength grade F100. Such concrete can be used in construction works.  相似文献

Portland cement porous concrete (PCPC) has received immense interest recently due to its environmental aids. Its porous structure helps to reduce the water runoff amount while improving the recharge of groundwater. Earlier studies have concentrated on illustrating and knowing the functional as well as structural properties of PCPC. However, very few studies are available on PCPC in combination with natural silica sources as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Most SCMs are by-products of industrial manufacturing processes and cause some environmental concerns, but with their pozzolanic effect, they could be utilized as partial substitute materials for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) to enhance the strength as well as durability performance. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of diatomaceous earth (DE) as a supplementary cementitious material for partial substitution of OPC for Portland cement porous concrete application. Compression strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength tests were performed to determine the effect of partial replacement. To investigate the impact of test variables, basic tests, including void content and water permeability, were also performed. Compared to the control concrete, the results show that a 15% replacement of cement with DE significantly increased the compressive strength (by 53%) while also providing adequate porosity and better water permeability. Statistical analysis (ANOVA) and regression analysis showed that there is a significant (p < 0.05) growth within the physical characteristics of concrete upon the replacement of cement by 15% DE. Collectively, the replacement of cement with DE could not only improve the concrete strength but also reduce the consumption of cement, thereby lessening the cost of construction as well as indirectly reducing the carbon footprint.  相似文献

The sustainability of the construction sector demands the reduction of CO2 emissions. The optimization of the amount of cement in concrete can be achieved either by partially replacing it by additions or by reducing the binder content. The present work aims at optimizing the properties of concrete used in the production of reinforced concrete poles for electrical distribution lines, combining the maximization of compactness with the partial replacement of cement by fly ash, natural pozzolans, and electric furnace slags. Natural aggregates were also partially replaced by recycled ones in mixtures with fly ash. Two types of concrete were studied: a fresh molded one with a dry consistency and a formwork molded one with a plastic consistency. The following properties were characterized: mechanical properties (flexural, tensile splitting, and compressive strengths, as well as Young’s modulus) and durability properties (capillary water absorption, water penetration depth under pressure, resistance to carbonation, chloride migration, and concrete surface resistivity). The service life of structures was estimated, taking the deterioration of reinforcement induced by concrete carbonation or chloride attack into account. Results revealed that mixtures with fly ash exhibit higher mechanical performance and mixtures with fly ash or pozzolans reveal much higher durability results than the full Portland cement-based mixtures.  相似文献

In this paper, the effect of early curing temperature on the tunnel fire resistance of self-compacting concrete (SCC) coated with aerogel cement paste (ACP) was studied. The physical properties in terms of the compressive strength, flexural strength, and thermal conductivity of ACP were tested under different early curing temperatures. The tunnel fire resistance of ACP and SCC coated with ACP was determined, and the microstructure of ACP and SCC after a tunnel fire were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the strength of ACP initially increased (by 10–40 °C) and then later decreased (by 40–60 °C) with the increase in early curing temperature. ACP under 40 °C early curing exhibited the minimum number of cracks and mass loss after the tunnel fire. Too high or too low early curing temperature reduced the thermal conductivity of ACP but accelerated the formation and expansion of microcracks during the tunnel fire. The residual compressive strength of SCC coated with ACP under 40 °C early curing after the tunnel fire was the highest, demonstrating the best tunnel fire resistance.  相似文献

Cement paste powder (CPP) is a by-product of the recycling process of concrete with an elevated carbonation capability and potential to be recycled as a binding material in new concrete batches. The application of a carbonation treatment to CPP improves this potential even more, besides the evident gains in terms of CO2 net balance. However, the long duration usually adopted in this treatment, from 3 to 28 days, hampers the industrial viability of the process. We studied the feasibility of a short-duration carbonation process, with a duration of two hours, carrying out a comprehensive characterization of the material throughout the process. The test was performed on CPP with an average initial water content of 16.9%, exposed to a CO2 concentration of 80%. The results demonstrate two main carbonation rates: a rapid growth rate in the first 18 minutes of the process, involving all the calcium-bearing compounds in CPP, and a slow growth rate afterwards, where only C-S-H contributes to the carbonation reaction. During the 2 h carbonation process, the main CPP compounds, calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and calcium hydroxide (CH), reached different carbonation degrees, 31% and 94%, with, however, close CO2 uptake values, 8% and 11%, respectively. Nevertheless, the total CO2 uptake for this process (≈19%) attained values not distant from the values usually obtained in a carbonation of 12 days or more (19–25%). Hence, these findings highlight the blocking role of C-S-H in the carbonation process, indicating that longer carbonation periods are only going to be useful if an effective carbonation of this compound is accomplished. In the present scenario, where CH is the main contributor to the reaction, the reduction in the process duration is feasible.  相似文献

This study evaluated the mechanical properties and durability performance of latex-modified hybrid fiber-reinforced roller-compacted rapid-set cement concrete (LMHFRCRSC) for emergency repair of concrete pavement. Experimental parameters included the blend ratio of the hybrid fiber, which comprised natural jute fiber (0–0.2 vol.%) and structural synthetic fiber (0–2 vol.%). The mechanical performance of LMHFRCRSC of various blend ratios was evaluated in terms of compressive, flexural, and splitting tensile strength. Durability assessment included chlorine ion penetration and abrasion resistance measurements. Compressive and flexural strength values of 21 and 3.5 MPa, respectively, were the set targets after 4 h of curing; a compressive strength of 35 MPa, a flexural strength of 4.5 MPa, a splitting tensile strength of 4.2 MPa, and chloride ion penetration of 2000 C or less were required after 28 days of curing. Our test results confirmed that all mix proportions satisfied the target values, regardless of the blend ratio of the hybrid fiber. Specifically, the mechanical performance of the concrete improved as the blend ratio of the structural synthetic fiber increased. With regard to durability, a greater amount of jute fiber, a hydrophilic fiber, enhanced the concrete’s durability. Additionally, incorporating jute fiber of 0.6 kg/m3 provided excellent chlorine ion penetration resistance. The optimal blend ratio for the hybrid fiber was natural jute fiber at 0.6 kg/m3 and structural synthetic fiber at 13.65 kg/m3 (mix: J0.6 + P13.65); with this mix proportion, a chloride ion penetration amount of 1000 C or less and maximum mechanical performance were achieved.  相似文献
