Chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) membranes for microfiltration processes were prepared with the combined process of a solvent evaporation technique and the water‐vapor induced‐phase‐inversion method. CPVC membranes with a mean pore size of 0.7 μm were very hydrophobic. These membranes were subjected to surface modification by ultraviolet (UV)‐assisted graft polymerization with N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone (NVP) to increase their surface wettability and decrease their adsorptive fouling. The grafting yields of the modified membranes were controlled by alteration of UV irradiation time and NVP monomer concentration. The changes in chemical structure between the CPVC membrane and the CPVC‐g‐poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone) membrane and the variation of the topologies of the modified PVC membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. According to the results, the graft yield of the modified CPVC membrane reached a maximum at 5 min of UV exposure time and 20 vol % NVP concentration. The filtration behavior of these membranes was investigated with deionized water by a crossflow filtration measurement. The surface hydrophilicity and roughness were easily changed by the grafting of NVP on the surface of the CPVC membrane through a simultaneous irradiation grafting method by UV irradiation. To confirm the effect of grafting for filtration, we compared the unmodified and modified CPVC membranes with respect to their deionized water permeation by using crossflow filtration methods. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) was irradiated by electron beam in vacuum at 20 KGy to produce living free radicals, and then reacted with acrylic acid (AA) in solution to obtain the PVC‐g‐AA copolymers. The copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Porous membranes were prepared from copolymers by the phase inversion technique. The morphology of PVC‐g‐AA membranes was studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy. The mean pore size and pore size distribution were determined by a mercury porosimeter. The mean pore size was 0.19 μm, and the bulk porosity was 56.02%. The apparent static water contact angle was 89.0°. The water drop penetration rate was 2.35 times to the original membrane. The maximum stress was 4.10 MPa. Filtration experiments were carried out to evaluate the fouling resistance of the PVC‐g‐AA membrane. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

This article describes the development of novel nanocrystalline poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) for potential applications in PVC processes and reports improvements in the mechanical properties and thermal resistance. Before the preparation of nanocrystalline PVC via jet milling, PVC was spray‐treated and heat‐treated to improve its crystallinity. The pulverization and degradation, morphology, crystalline structure, and melting‐point changes of postmodified PVC during jet milling and the relationship between the distributions of the particle size and processing temperature were investigated. X‐ray analysis and density testing indicated increased density and improved crystallinity. The crystalline region of nanocrystalline PVC was less than 80 nm, with a particle size distribution of 5–20 μm and a melting point of less than 128°C. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of solid‐state chlorinated polyethylene of various chlorine content and residual crystallinity on the mechanical properties of rigid poly(vinyl chloride) has been studied. The impact strength of poly(vinyl chloride) was found to increase significantly as 10–20 mass% chlorinated polyethylene, containing from 10.2 to 27.3% chlorine content (preferably 21.8% Cl) were added. This dependence corresponded to the higher elasticity and impact strength of the solid‐state chlorinated polyethylene with chlorine content below 30% as well as the microstructure of its chlorinated block fragments. Multicomponent system of high impact strength and good flowability, consisting of poly(vinyl chloride), chlorinated polyethylene, hydroxyl‐terminated polybutadiene, and ethylene–propylene–ethylidenenorbornene terpolymer was also obtained. Regardless of the incompatibility between the polymer components of this blend, the similarity in the chemical nature of poly(vinyl chloride) and chlorinated polyethylene blocks on one hand, and the methylene sequences in the chlorinated polyethylene and elastomers on the other, resulted in the formation of an efficient interfacial layer. The changes in the structure of the blends were established by both calorimetric and microscopic studies. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 2602–2613, 2006  相似文献

Chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) was solution blended with poly(caprolactone) (PCL), poly(hexamethylene sebacate) (PHMS), poly(α-methyl-α-n-propyl-β-propiolactone) (PMPPL), poly(valerolactone) (PVL), poly(ethylene adipate), poly(ethylene succinate) and poly(β-propiolactone). From calorimetric glass transition temperature (Tg) measurements, it is concluded that CPVC is miscible with polyesters having a CH2/COO ratio larger than three (PCL, PHMS, PMPPL and PVL). The Gordon-Taylor k parameter was also calculated and found equal to 1.0 and 0.56 for PCL/CPVC and PHMS/CPVC blends, respectively. From these values, it is concluded that CPVC gives a stronger interaction with polyesters than poly(vinyl chloride) due to its larger chlorine content.  相似文献

Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared from poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), carboxylated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC), and PVC/CPVC blends by the phase-inversion method. The physical structure of the membranes was characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The fouling characteristics of all the three membranes and acrylamide (AA)-grafted PVC membranes were characterized by ultrafiltration of bovine serum albumin (BSA) solution over a range of pH and of salt concentrations. Maximum adsorption of the protein on the membrane occurred near the isoelectric point of BSA and in the presence of the salts. The charge on BSA appears to be a dominant factor in determining the fouling. The UF results are explained in terms of nature of the membrane polymer, and effect of different ionic environments on the conformational changes of the protein. The ultrafiltration fluxes are correlated by a model based on the membrane resistance and the time-dependent resistance of the concentration polarization layer of the protein. The values of a mass transfer coefficient and concentration polarization were determined. Zeta potential of the membranes were also determined before and after the UF. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. To improve the antifouling property of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membranes, a series of poly(methacrylic acid) grafted PVC copolymers (PVC‐g‐PMAA) with different grafting degree were synthesized via one‐step atom transfer radical polymerization process utilizing the labile chlorines on PVC backbones followed by one‐step hydrolysis reaction. PVC/PVC‐g‐PMAA blend membranes with different grafting degree and copolymer content were prepared by nonsolvent induced phase separation method. The surface chemical composition, surface charge, membrane structures, wettability, permeability, separation performances and the fouling resistance of blend membranes were carefully investigated. The results indicated that the PMAA chains were segregated towards the surface and the membranes were endowed with negative charge. The hydrophilicity and permeability of the blend membranes were obviously improved. Furthermore, the antifouling ability especially at neutral or alkaline environments was also significantly increased. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42745.  相似文献

In this study, I aimed to change the thermomechanical characteristics of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), which is widely used in commercial areas. Copolymers containing maleic anhydride (MA) units are commonly used to obtain compatible polymer blends. In our study, PVC blends were also prepared with the terpolymers with and without anhydride units. I assumed that the impact of the terpolymer on the thermomechanical characteristics of the PVC material could be more effectively controlled. For this purpose, two sets of six different blends of PVC with or without MA were synthesized, among which one was pure PVC, but the other five blends contained 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10% terpolymer. In conclusion, I observed that the terpolymer with the MA unit more regularly changed the thermomechanical characteristics of PVC. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, we report on the preparation and characterization of novel poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)–carbon fiber (CF) composites. We achieved the reinforcement of PVC matrices with different plasticizer contents using unidirectional continuous CFs by applying a warm press and a cylinder press for the preparation of the PVC–CF composites. We achieved considerable reinforcement of PVC even at a relatively low CF content; for example, the maximum stress (σmax) of the PVC–CF composite at a 3% CF content was found to be 1.5–2 times higher than that of the PVC matrix. There were great differences among the Young's modulus values of the pure PVC and PVC–CF composites matrices. The absolute Young's modulus values were in the range 1100–1300 MPa at a 3% CF content; these values were almost independent of the plasticizer content. In addition, we found a linear relationship between σmax and the CF content and also recognized a linear variation of the Young's modulus with the CF content. The adhesion of CF to the PVC matrix was strong in each case, as concluded from the strain–stress curves and the light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy investigations. The mechanical properties of the PVC–CF composites with randomly oriented short (10 mm) fibers were also investigated. At low deformations, the stiffness of the composites improved with increasing CF content. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) was used to determine the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the PVC–CF composites. The high increase in the Young's modulus entailed only a mild Tg increase. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

The preparation of hydrotalcites with traditional materials is often based on the corresponding salts and alkali solutions. In this study, to facilitate industrial synthesis and take advantage of the lower cost during the process, a Ca–Al–HPO3–layered double hydroxide (LDH) was directly synthesized with calcium hydroxide, aluminum hydroxide, and sodium phosphite powders. X‐ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed the successful synthesis of the phosphite‐intercalated hydrotalcite. Compared with Ca–Al–CO3–LDH, Ca–Al–HPO3–LDH enhanced the heat stability of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in terms of both short‐term and long‐term stability because phosphite replaced the allyl chloride and reacted with the conjugated double bonds in PVC; this was deduced through a thermal aging test. The composites of Ca–Al–HPO3–LDH, zinc stearate, and calcium stearate had a synergetic effect when added to PVC and exhibited excellent thermal stability. In addition, the phosphite reacted with ZnCl2 in case of the phenomenon of zinc burning. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2017 , 134, 44896.  相似文献

Crystalline poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl alcohol) (EVOH) membranes were prepared by a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process. The diluents used were 1,3‐propanediol and 1,3‐butanediol. The dynamic crystallization temperature was determined by DSC measurement. No structure was detected by an optical microscope in the temperature region higher than the crystallization temperature. This means that porous membrane structures were formed by solid–liquid phase separation (polymer crystallization) rather than by liquid–liquid phase separation. The EVOH/butanediol system showed a higher dynamic crystallization temperature and equilibrium melting temperature than those of the EVOH/propanediol system. SEM observation showed that the sizes of the crystalline particles in the membranes depended on the polymer concentration, cooling rate, and kinds of diluents. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The present study evaluates the impact of blending organosolv and kraft lignins, which are natural polymer by‐products in the pulp and paper industry, with plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) in flooring formulations. Also examined is the impact of replacing dioctyl phthalate, a PVC industry general‐purpose plasticizer, with diethylene glycol dibenzoate (Benzoflex 2‐45), tricresyl phosphate (Lindol), or alkyl sulfonic phenyl ester (Mesamoll) in these formulations. The influence of the different types of lignins and plasticizers on the processibility, thermal, and mechanical properties of the blends is discussed. These properties demonstrate that partial replacement of PVC (20 parts) with different lignins is feasible for some formulations that can be successfully used as matrices for a high level of calcium carbonate filler in flooring products. In addition, the data demonstrate that the presence of certain plasticizers, which interfere with the intramolecular interactions existing in lignins, may allow the lignin molecules to have more molecular mobility. The morphology and the properties of PVC plasticized lignin blends are strongly influenced by the degree and mode of the lignin plasticization and its dispersion within the PVC matrix. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the influence of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) and acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene copolymer (ABS) on the mechanical properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC)/CPE and PVC/ABS hybrids were examined. The experimental results show that the toughness of the hybrids could be modified greatly by the introduction of CPE or ABS. The microstructure and impact surfaces of the blends were investigated by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. ABS dispersed in the form of particles or agglomerates in the PVC matrix, and CPE tended to disperse as a net structure. In the tensile test, ABS initiated crazes as stress concentrators to toughen the PVC matrix, whereas CPE, with the PVC matrix together, caused a yield deformation by shear stress to form a shear band. The formation of crazes and shear bands benefited the toughening of PVC, but to the different extent. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 90: 916–924, 2003  相似文献

New types of composite anion‐exchange membranes were prepared by blending of suspension‐produced poly(vinyl chloride) (S‐PVC) and poly(styrene‐co‐butadiene), otherwise known as styrene–butadiene rubber (SBR), as binder, along with anion‐exchange resin powder to provide functional groups and activated carbon as inorganic filler additive. Also, an ultrasonic method was used to obtain better homogeneity. In solutions with mono‐ and divalent anions, the effect of activated carbon and sonication on the morphology, electrochemical properties and selectivity of these membranes was elucidated. For all solutions, ion‐exchange capacity, membrane potential, permselectivity, transport number, ionic permeability, flux and current efficiency of the prepared membranes initially increased on increasing the activated carbon concentration to 2 wt% in the casting solution and then began to decrease. Moreover, the electrical resistance and energy consumption of the membranes initially decreased on increasing the activated carbon loading to 2 wt% and then increased. S‐PVC‐blend‐SBR membranes with additive showed a decrease in water content and a slight decrease in oxidative stability. Also, these membranes showed good monovalent ion selectivity. Structural images of the prepared membranes obtained using scanning optical microscopy showed that sonication increased polymer‐particle interactions and promoted the compatibility of particles with binder. Crosslinked poly(butyl acrylate‐co‐2‐ethylhexyl acrylate) [P(BA–EHA)] latex was synthesized by seeded emulsion polymerization. P(BA–EHA)/poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composite latex was prepared using P(BA–EHA) latex as the seed. The effects of the amount of P(BA–EHA) on the latex particle diameters and mechanical properties of the materials are discussed. The grafting efficiency (GE) of P(BA–EHA)‐grafted vinyl chloride (VC) in the synthesized resin was investigated, and the GE increased with an increasing P(BA–EHA)/VC ratio. The morphology of P(BA–EHA)/PVC was characterized using TEM, SEM, and DMA. TEM indicated that the particles of the P(BA–EHA)/PVC composite latex have a clear core–shell structure. DMA illustrated that the compatibility between P(BA–EHA) and PVC was well improved. With an increasing P(BA–EHA) content, the loss peak in the low‐temperature range became stronger than that of pure PVC, and the maximum values of the loss peaks gradually shifted to higher temperature. SEM showed that the fractured surface of the composite sample exhibited better toughness of the material. The notched impact strength of the material with 4.2 wt % P(BA–EHA) was 11 times that of PVC. TEM showed that P(BA–EHA) was uniformly dispersed in the PVC matrix and that the interface between the two phases was indistinct. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fusion time, fusion temperature, and fusion torque of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) compounds with various components were studied in this article. Influences of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), oxidized polyethylene (OPE), and calcium stearate on fusion characteristics of PVC compounds were illustrated. The synergistic reaction among CPE, OPE, and calcium stearate forms a powerful and effective processing aid that allows the PVC particles to fuse more quickly and uniformly. In PVC/CPE compounds, a higher concentration of CPE can function like a processing aid and help PVC particles to fuse together easily. Meanwhile, the interaction between a higher concentration of OPE and calcium stearate in PVC/OPE compounds can promote the PVC particles to fuse together easily in the beginning of the fusion process. However, the external lubricant property of OPE still exists and results in more intact PVC microparticles not fused. The fusion temperature of the PVC in a Haake mixing bowl increases as the fusion time increases. On the other hand, the fusion torque decreases as the fusion time increases. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 74: 699–705, 1999  相似文献

Blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with varying contents of plasticizer and finely ground powder of waste nitrile rubber rollers were prepared over a wide range of rubber contents through high‐temperature blending. The effects of rubber and plasticizer (dioctyl phthalate) content on the tensile strength, percentage elongation, impact properties, hardness, abrasion resistance, flexural crack resistance, limiting oxygen index (LOI), electrical properties, and breakdown voltage were studied. The percentage elongation, flexural crack resistance, and impact strength of blends increased considerably over those of PVC. The waste rubber had a plasticizing effect. Blends of waste plasticized PVC and waste nitrile rubber showed promising properties. The electrical properties and LOI decreased with increasing rubber and plasticizer content. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 1552–1558, 2004  相似文献

Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) hollow‐fiber membranes were spun by a dry/wet phase‐inversion technique from dopes containing 15 wt % PVC to achieve membranes with different pore sizes for ultrafiltration (UF) applications. The effects of the N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc) concentration in the internal coagulant on the structural morphology, separation performance, and mechanical properties of the produced PVC hollow fibers were investigated. The PVC membranes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, average pore size, pore size distribution, void volume fraction measurements, and solubility parameter difference. Moreover, the UF experiments were conducted with pure water and aqueous solutions of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) as feeds. The mechanical properties of the PVC hollow‐fiber membranes were discussed in terms of the tensile strength and Young's modulus. It was found that the PVC membrane morphology changed from thin, fingerlike macrovoids at the inner edge to fully spongelike structure with DMAc concentration in the internal coagulant. The effective pores showed a wide distribution, between 0.2 and 1.1 μm, for the membranes prepared with H2O as the internal coagulant and a narrow distribution, between 0.114 and 0.135 μm, with 50 wt % DMAc. The results illustrate that the difference in the membrane performances was dependent on the DMAc concentration. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献
