To determine the apparent diameter of the Sun, it is first necessary to measure the shape of the intensity profile of the solar limb with an imaging optical system (hereafter denoted as a solar-limb profile). The inflection point of the limb profile is usually used as a reference for calculating the diameter. Because this point may be difficult to determine in the presence of noise, it is necessary to define an appropriate filtering process that eliminates noise while preserving the position of the inflection point. In this paper we study two filtering techniques, one based on the compact wavelet transform and the other on the finite Fourier transform definition, that meet these requirements. The application of these two techniques to data gathered by the Solar Disk Sextant experiment shows that the solar radius increased from 1992 to 1996 by about 197 mas. However, a previous analysis of the same data and our present analysis provide a difference in the measured radii of about 92 mas. We show that this difference is entirely traced to the filtering process.  相似文献

Since 1975, a visual program of solar diameter measurement is pursuedat Calern Observatory (France). These observations allowed to put inevidence variations in solar data. Several studies were developed inorder to analyze the data using appropriate me thods (deconvolution ofthe observation window function and least square fits) (Moussaouiet al., 1999). We present in this work a time-frequency studyof the found harmonic terms. It is developed using the wavelettransform. The obtained results are presented and discussed.  相似文献

SolACES is part of the ESA SOLAR ISS mission that started aboard the shuttle mission STS-122 on 7 February 2008. The instrument has recorded solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiance from 16 to 150 nm during the extended solar activity minimum and the beginning solar cycle 24 with rising solar activity and increasingly changing spectral composition. The SOLAR mission has been extended from a period of 18 months to >?8 years until the end of 2016. SolACES is operating three grazing incidence planar grating spectrometers and two three-current ionization chambers. The latter ones are considered as primary radiometric detector standards. Re-filling the ionization chambers with three different gases repeatedly and using overlapping band-pass filters, the absolute EUV fluxes are derived in these spectral intervals. This way the serious problem of continuing efficiency changes in space-borne instrumentation is overcome during the mission. Evaluating the three currents of the ionization chambers, the overlapping spectral ranges of the spectrometers and of the filters plus inter-comparing the results from the EUV photon absorption in the gases with different absorption cross sections, there are manifold instrumental possibilities to cross-check the results providing a high degree of reliability to the spectral irradiance derived. During the mission a very strong up-and-down variability of the spectrometric efficiency by orders of magnitude is observed. One of the effects involved is channeltron degradation. However, there are still open questions on other effects contributing to these changes. A survey of the measurements carried out and first results of the solar spectral irradiance (SSI) data are presented. Inter-comparison with EUV data from other space missions shows good agreement such that the international effort has started to elaborate a complete set of EUV-SSI data taking into account all data available from 2008 to 2013.  相似文献

The Gegenschein is viewed by the Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI), which has provided near-full-sky broadband visible-light photometric maps for over 5 years. These have an angular resolution of about 0.5° and differential photometric stability of about 1% throughout this time. When individual bright stars are removed from the maps and an empirical sidereal background subtracted, the residue is dominated by the zodiacal light. The unprecedented sky coverage and duration of these measurements enables a definitive characterization of the Gegenschein. This article describes the analysis method for these data, presents a movie with time of the Gegenschein brightness distribution, determines empirical formulae describing its average shape, and discusses its variation with time. These measurements unambiguously confirm previous reports that the Gegenschein surface-brightness distribution has a decided peak in the antisolar point, which rises above a broader background.  相似文献

This paper describes the methods used to obtain the thermal evolution and radiative output during solar flares as observed by the Extreme ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). How EVE measurements, due to the temporal cadence, spectral resolution and spectral range, can be used to determine how the thermal plasma radiates at various temperatures throughout the impulsive and gradual phase of flares is presented and discussed in detail. EVE can very accurately determine the radiative output of flares due to pre- and in-flight calibrations. Events are presented that show that the total radiated output of flares depends more on the flare duration than the typical GOES X-ray peak magnitude classification. With SDO observing every flare throughout its entire duration and over a large temperature range, new insights into flare heating and cooling as well as the radiative energy release in EUV wavelengths support existing research into understanding the evolution of solar flares.  相似文献

The NASA Earth Observing System (EOS) is an advanced study of Earth's long-term global changes of solid Earth, its atmosphere, and oceans and includes a coordinated collection of satellites, data systems, and modeling. The EOS program was conceived in the 1980s as part of NASA's Earth System Enterprise (ESE). The Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) is one of about 20 missions planned for the EOS program, and the SORCE measurement objectives include the total solar irradiance (TSI) and solar spectral irradiance (SSI) that are two of the 24 key measurement parameters defined for the EOS program. The SORCE satellite was launched in January 2003, and its observations are improving the understanding and generating new inquiry regarding how and why solar variability occurs and how it affects Earth's energy balance, atmosphere, and long-term climate changes.  相似文献

The Solar–Stellar Irradiance Comparison Experiment (SOLSTICE) measures the solar spectral irradiance from 115 to 320 nm with a resolution of 0.1 nm. The Sun and stars are both observed with the same optics and detector, changing only the apertures and integration times. Pre-launch calibration at SURF allows us to measure both with an absolute accuracy of 5%. The in-flight sensitivity degradation is measured relative to a set of stable, early-type stars. The ensemble of stars form a calibration reference standard that is stable to better than 1% over timescales of centuries. The stellar irradiances are repeatedly observed on a grid of wavelengths and our goal is to measure changes in the absolute sensitivity of the instrument at the 0.5% per year level. This paper describes the details of the observing technique and discusses the level of success in achieving design goals.  相似文献

Solar five-minute oscillations have been detected in the power spectra of two six-day time intervals from soft X-ray measurements of the Sun observed as a star using the Extreme Ultraviolet Spectrophotometer (ESP) onboard the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO)/Extreme Ultraviolet Variability Experiment (EVE). The frequencies of the largest amplitude peaks were found to match the known low-degree (?=0?–?3) modes of global acoustic oscillations within 3.7 μHz and can be explained by a leakage of the global modes into the corona. Due to the strong variability of the solar atmosphere between the photosphere and the corona, the frequencies and amplitudes of the coronal oscillations are likely to vary with time. We investigated the variations in the power spectra for individual days and their association with changes of solar activity, e.g. with the mean level of the EUV irradiance, and its short-term variations caused by evolving active regions. Our analysis of samples of one-day oscillation power spectra for a 49-day period of low and intermediate solar activity showed little correlation with the mean EUV irradiance and the short-term variability of the irradiance. We suggest that some other changes in the solar atmosphere, e.g., magnetic fields and/or inter-network configuration may affect the mode leakage to the corona.

The adoption of a parametric model for the spatial distribution of Gould Belt and Galactic Disk stars allows the classification by their membership probabilities of stars from the Hipparcos catalogue in the Solar vicinity and the estimation of structural parameters for both stellar systems for several age groups. The observed kinematics of Gould Belt and Disk stars are shown to be different. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The aim of the present study is to investigate the short-term periodicity in the solar radius measurements and to compare with the short periods in sunspot numbers, sunspot areas and flare index data. The spectral analysis of data sets covering a time interval from 26 February 2000 to 26 October 2007 during Solar Cycle 23 were made by using the Date Compensated Discrete Fourier Transform (DCDFT). The power spectrum of solar radius data corrected for the seeing effect gives an evident peak at 25.7 days with the amplitude of 0.034 arcsec, which is slightly different from the peaks of 26.2 and 26.7 days produced by sunspot numbers and sunspot areas data, respectively. Besides, the main peak of 25.7 days detected in the power spectrum of solar radius data is in agreement with the period of 25.5 days, suggested to be the fundamental period of the Sun by Bai and Sturrock (in Nature 350, 141, 1991).  相似文献

We report on the results of the Cosmic Dust Experiment (CDE) onboard the Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere (AIM) satellite, collected during eight months of operation between May 2007 and February 2008. CDE is an impact detector designed to measure the variability of the cosmic dust influx of grains with radius, . CDE consists of 14 permanently polarized polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) channels that produce an electrical signal when impacted with hyper-velocity dust particles. The instrument has a total surface area of 0.11 m2 and a time resolution of 1 s. CDE experienced higher noise levels than expected on-orbit, triggering the need for new laboratory experiments, as well as the development of new data reduction approaches. We present the first eight months of reduced CDE data, highlighting the observed spatial and temporal variability of the cosmic dust influx.  相似文献

The results from 9112 independent measurements of the solar diameter, made between the years 1998 and 2000, at the Observatório Nacional Rio de Janeiro station, are examined. After the removal of isolated observations and correction of systematic effects, the series of results presents a well-defined normal distribution with standard deviation of 566 milli-arc-seconds (mas). The east and west results, which were taken under quite different atmospheric and instrumental conditions, have been treated separately and the smoothed series correlate at the level of 80%. The solar figure as charted from these data diverges from a perfect sphere by a mid-heliolatitude depletion at the level of 50 mas, and an overall flatness, to the effect of the polar radius being shorter than the equatorial radius by 13±4 mas. Finally, a significant periodic variation around 515 days is found for the observed solar diameter, with amplitude of 60 mas.  相似文献

A possible correlation between the magnetic and velocity fields has been analyzed based on the SOHO/MDI magnetograms and Dopplergrams. It is found that the observed large-scale weak magnetic field (weaker than 50 G (gauss)) is correlated with the velocity statistically. The curves of ub with latitude, where u and b are the velocity and magnetic fields in a rectangular region (±15 in longitude, ±45 in latitude) on the Sun, show the same patterns in the years 2000, 2004, and 2007. The patterns indicate that u and b are positively correlated near the equator but are anti-correlated at the middle latitudes. For a strong magnetic field between 50 G and 3000 G, the curves of ub with latitude show the same tendencies at the middle latitudes. Near the equator, however, the slope of the curve is positive in 2000 and is negative in 2004 and 2007. In addition, we give an estimation for the amplitude of the cross helicity h χ (hc=[`(u·b)]h_{\chi}=\overline{\mathbf{u}\cdot\mathbf{b}}) inferred from the MDI data, which is of the order of 103 G m s−1 near the center of the solar disk.  相似文献

The Solar–Stellar Irradiance Comparison Experiment II (SOLSTICE II) is one of four experiments launched aboard the Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) on 25 January, 2003. Its principal science objectives are to measure solar spectral irradiance from 115 to 320 nm with a spectral resolution of 1 nm, a cadence of 6 h, and an accuracy of 5% and to determine solar variability with a relative accuracy of 0.5% per year during a 5-year long nominal mission. SOLSTICE II meets these objectives using a pair of identical scanning grating monochromators that can measure both solar and stellar irradiance. Instrument radiometric responsivity was calibrated to ∼3% absolute accuracy before launch using the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility (SURF) at the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) in Gaithersburg, MD. During orbital operations, SOLSTICE II has been making daily measurements of both the Sun and an ensemble of bright, stable, main-sequence B and A stars. The stellar measurements allow the tracking of changes in instrument responsivity with a relative accuracy of 0.5% per year over the life of the mission. SOLSTICE II is an evolution of the SOLSTICE i instrument that is currently operating on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS). This paper reviews the basic SOLSTICE concept and describes the design, operating modes, and early performance of the SOLSTICE II instrument.  相似文献

The Solar–Stellar Irradiance Comparison Experiment {II (SOLSTICE {II), aboard the Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE) spacecraft, consists of a pair of identical scanning grating monochromators, which have the capability to observe both solar spectral irradiance and stellar spectral irradiance using a single optical system. The SOLSTICE science objectives are to measure solar spectral irradiance from 115 to 320 nm with a spectral resolution of 1 nm, a cadence of 6 h, and an accuracy of 5%, to determine its variability with a long-term relative accuracy of 0.5% per year during a 5-year nominal mission, and to determine the ratio of solar irradiance to that of an ensemble of bright B and A stars to an accuracy of 2%. Those objectives are met by calibrating instrument radiometric sensitivity before launch using the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility at the National Institute for Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. During orbital operations irradiance measurements from an ensemble of bright, stable, main-sequence B and A stars are used to track instrument sensitivity. SORCE was launched on 25 January 2003. After spacecraft and instrument check out, SOLSTICE {II first observed a series of three stars to establish an on-orbit performance baseline. Since 6 March 2003, both instruments have been making daily measurements of both the Sun and stars. This paper describes the pre-flight and in-flight calibration and characterization measurements that are required to achieve the SOLSTICE science objectives and compares early SOLSTICE{II measurements of both solar and stellar irradiance with those obtained by SOLSTICE {I on the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite.  相似文献

The Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) had on board the electron temperature probe experiment which measured temperature and concentration of electrons in the ionosphere of Venus. When the probe was outside the Venus ionosphere and was in the solar wind, the probe current was entirely due to solar photons striking the probe surface. This probe thus measured integrated solar EUV flux (Ipe) over a 13-year period from January 1979 to December 1991, thereby covering the declining phase of solar cycle 21 and the rising phase of solar cycle 22. In this paper, we examine the behavior of Ipe translated to the solar longitude of Earth (to be called EIpe) during the two solar cycles. We find that total EUV flux changed by about 60% during solar cycle 21 and by about 100% in solar cycle 22. We also compare this flux with other solar activity indicators such as F_10.7 , Lα, and the solar magnetic field. We find that while the daily values of EIpe are highly correlated with F_10.7 (correlation coefficient 0.87), there is a large scatter in EIpe for any value of this Earth-based index. A comparison of EIpe with SME and UARS SOLSTICE Lα measurements taken during the same period shows that EIpe tracks Lα quite faithfully with a correlation coefficient of 0.94. Similar comparison with the solar magnetic field (Bs) shows that EIpe correlates better with Bs than with F_10.7 . We also compare EIpe with total solar irradiance measured during the same period.  相似文献

An experiment carried out at the Brookhaven National Laboratory over a period of almost 8 years acquired 364 measurements of the beta-decay rates of a sample of \({}^{32}\mbox{Si}\) and, for comparison, of a sample of \({}^{36}\mbox{Cl}\). The experimenters reported finding “small periodic annual deviations of the data points from an exponential decay?…?of uncertain origin”. We find that power-spectrum and spectrogram analyses of these datasets show evidence not only of the annual oscillations, but also of transient oscillations with frequencies near 11 year?1 and 12.5 year?1. Similar analyses of 358 measurements of the solar neutrino flux acquired by the Super-Kamiokande neutrino observatory over a period of about 5 years yield evidence of an oscillation near 12.5 year?1 and another near 9.5 year?1. An oscillation near 12.5 year?1 is compatible with the influence of rotation of the radiative zone. We suggest that an oscillation near 9.5 year?1 may be indicative of rotation of the solar core, and that an oscillation near 11 year?1 may have its origin in a tachocline between the core and the radiative zone. Modulation of the solar neutrino flux may be attributed to an influence of the Sun’s internal magnetic field by the Resonant Spin Flavor Precession (RSFP) mechanism, suggesting that neutrinos and neutrino-induced beta decays can provide information about the deep solar interior.  相似文献

The total solar irradiance varies over a solar cycle of 11 years and maybe over cycles of longer periods. Is the solar diameter variable over time too? A discussion of the solar diameter and its variations must be linked to the limb darkening function (LDF). We introduce a new method to perform high-resolution astrometry of the solar diameter from the ground, through the observations of eclipses, using the luminosity evolution of Baily’s bead and the profile of the lunar edge available from satellite data. This approach unifies the definition of the solar limb with the inflection point of LDF for eclipses and drift-scan or heliometric methods. The method proposed is applied for the videos of the eclipse on 15 January 2010 recorded in Uganda and in India. The result suggests reconsidering the evaluations of the historical eclipses observed with the naked eye.  相似文献
