This study was performed with commercially available phenyl trimethoxysilane (PTMS) and neoalkoxytitanate [i.e., neopentyl(diallyl)oxytri(dioctyl)phosphato titanate (LICA 12)] as coupling agents. PTMS and LICA 12 were used to treat talc and kaolin to compare their effects with untreated fillers upon incorporation into polypropylene (PP). Single‐filler PP composites (containing either talc or kaolin) and hybrid‐filler composites (containing a mix of both talc and kaolin) were compounded in a twin‐screw extruder and subsequently injection‐molded into dumbbells. The incorporation of PTMS and LICA 12 slightly decreased the tensile and flexural properties in terms of modulus and strength but increased the elongation at break for both single‐filler and hybrid‐filler composites. There was also a significant improvement in the impact strength of the composites, particularly those treated with LICA 12. The hybrid composites, through the synergistic coalescence of positive characteristics from talc and kaolin with the aid from chemical treatment provided an economically advantageous material with mechanical properties comparable to those of the single‐filler‐filled PP composites. Further investigations on flow and morphological properties were also done to correlate the mechanical properties of the single‐ and hybrid‐filler‐filled PP composites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Commercial stearic acid treated calcium carbonate (CaCO3) was used to make a comparative study on rheological behavior of the CaCO3 and talc‐filled polypropylene (PP) hybrid composites with nontreated filler. Apparent shear viscosity and extrudate swell were investigated with variation of filler ratio and temperature with 30% by weight total of filler was used in PP composite. The Shimadzu capillary rheometer was used to evaluate shear viscosity and shear rate of the composite. It was found that the shear viscosities decrease with increasing shear rate. The apparent shear viscosity of the composite containing the stearic acid treated is slightly lower than untreated filler. Shear thickening behavior at higher shear rate has also shown by 15/15 treated composites at higher temperature about 220°C and investigation by SEM has proved that filler being densely packed at that condition. Treated composites also exhibit lower swelling ratio value than untreated composite, and swelling ratio also decreases linearly with increasing temperature and the die length–diameter ratio. It is believed that dispersion of filler play an important role not only on shear viscosity but also on swelling ratio of PP composite. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Talc‐filled polypropylene (PP) composites coupled with silane‐grafted polypropylene (PP‐g‐Si) were prepared. Effect of PP‐g‐Si on the mechanical properties, crystallization, and melting behavior of PP composites was investigated. Compared with the uncoupled composites, the mechanical properties of Talc/PP composites coupled with a small amount of PP‐g‐Si were increased to some extent. Meanwhile, PP‐g‐Si can promote crystallization rate and increase crystallization temperature of PP in the composites. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 77: 2974–2977, 2000  相似文献

The flammability performance and mechanical behaviors for halogen‐based and non‐halogen‐based flame retardant (FR) filled polypropylene (PP) composites were investigated in this study. The halogen‐based FR system consisted of a mixture of brominated phosphate ester and antimony trioxide (BR), and the halogen‐free FR was a magnesium hydroxide (MH). It was found from limiting oxygen index measurements that 60 wt % of MH was needed in order to achieve the same degree of flammability as the composite containing only 30 wt % of BR. Scanning electron microscopy examinations of the fractured specimens indicated that the interfacial bond strength between PP and MH was stronger than that for PP and BR. The notched Charpy impact strength and the impact fracture toughness were measured and compared. The discrepancies between the two impact test results could be correlated after kinetic energy correction was applied to the Charpy impact strengths. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Residual softwood sawdust was pretreated by a steam‐explosion technique. It was used as a natural filler in polypropylene (PP)‐based composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis and tensile properties of these materials were studied. The influence of filler loading, steam‐explosion severity, and coating the fiber with a functionalized compatibilizer, such as maleic anhydryde polypropylene (MAPP), on the mechanical behavior of the composite was evaluated. The results were analyzed in relation with scanning electron microscopy observations, and surface energy (dispersive and polar components) and apparent specific area measurements. Experimental data indicate a better compatibility between MAPP‐coated fiber and PP with respect to the untreated one. The coating treatment of the softwood fiber was found to promote interfacial adhesion between both components, and to enhance the tensile properties of the resulting composite. This reinforcing effect was well predicted from theoretical calculations based on a mean field approach (Halpin‐Kardos model). The steam‐explosion pretreatment severity increased the surface energy and apparent specific surface, and resulted in a loss of the fiber entirety. The sorption behavior of these composite materials was also performed. It was found that the composites absorb more water, as the filler content is higher. MAPP coating provided protection from water uptake in the interphase region. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 74: 1962–1977, 1999  相似文献

Natural fiber‐thermoplastic composite materials, based on their cost‐effectiveness and environmental friendliness, have attracted much interest both scientifically and technologically in recent years. Other advantages of natural fibers are good specific strength, less abrasion, and less irritation upon inhalation (in comparison with some common inorganic fillers). In the present contribution, roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) fibers were chosen and used as reinforcing fillers for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) for the first time, due mainly to the cost‐effectiveness and natural abundance on Thai soil. Processibility and mechanical properties of the resulting composites were investigated against the type and the mean size of the fibers. The results showed that the highest mechanical properties were observed when roselle bast fibers were incorporated. When whole‐stalk (WS) fibers (i.e., the weight ratio of bast and core fibers was 40 : 60 w/w) were used, moderate mechanical properties of the resulting composites were realized. The optimal contents of the WS fibers and the maleic anhydride‐grafted iPP compatibilizer that resulted in an improvement in some of the mechanical properties of the resulting composites were 40 and 7 wt %, respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The purpose of this research was to investigate the water absorption behavior and associated dimensional stability of kenaf‐polypropylene‐filled (PP/KF) composites. Composites with different fiber loadings, ranging from 0 to 40 wt %, were prepared with a twin‐screw extruder followed by hot press molding. The influence of the compatibilizer was also studied for PP/KF composite with 5 wt % maleated PP (MAPP). Water absorption testing was carried out at room temperature for 7 weeks. Tensile, flexural, and impact tests were also performed on control, wet, and re‐dried specimens. Increasing the fiber content resulted in higher water absorption and thickness swelling. The inferior mechanical properties of the wet composites were attributed to the effect of water, which deteriorates the interfacial properties of composites. On re‐drying, all properties were almost recovered because of the recovery of interfacial area as evident in scanning electron micrographs. Incorporation of the MAPP significantly improved the compatibility between the fiber and matrix and the mechanical properties of the composites compared with those without MAPP. It also diminished the water absorption as well as the related thickness swelling in the composites. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

A custom‐made electromagnetic dynamic injection molding machine was adopted to study the mechanical properties and morphological behavior of calcium carbonate‐filled polypropylene (PP) in a dynamic injection molding process. The influence of vibration amplitude and frequency on the mechanical properties and morphological behavior of samples was investigated using tensile tests, notched Izod impact tests, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electronic microscopy. The tensile stress and the impact stress for all samples investigated were found to increase in a nonlinear manner with increasing vibration amplitude and frequency. The tensile stress reached a maximum value at about 8 Hz and 0.15 mm for neat PP and PP filled with 3, 20, and 30 wt% CaCO3. For PP filled with 40 wt% CaCO3, the tensile stress reached a maximum value at about 12 Hz and 0.2 mm. The impact stress reached a maximum value at about 12 Hz. From DSC experiments it was shown that the melting temperature slightly increased, but no new polymeric crystalline peak appeared under the vibration force field. The CaCO3 particles were diffused easily and distributed evenly in the PP melt under the vibration force field, so it is very useful in improving the quality of injection products. The tensile properties of polypropylene (PP) filled with hollow glass beads have been measured at room temperature to identify the effects of the particle contents, size and its distribution on them in the present article. The mean diameters of the fillers were 11, 35, and 70 μm, and they were named as TK10, TK35, and TK70 respectively. The surface of these particles was pretreated with silane coupling agent. The results showed that the yield stress (σy) decreased gently for PP/TK70 systems, whereas decreased relatively obviously for PP/TK35 systems with increasing the volume fraction (?f) of the fillers. When ?f was less than 5%, the tensile strength at break (σb) of the composites increased with the increase of ?f. When ?f was more than 5%, σb was almost a constant for PP/TK70 systems, while σb decreased linearly for PP/TK35 systems. The tensile fracture strain (εb) of the composites decreased suddenly when ?f was less than 5%, and then decreased slightly with increasing ?f. When ?f was 10%, σy and σb increased while εb decreased with the increase of the bead diameter. Furthermore, the σy was predicted by means an equation proposed in the previous work, and good interfacial adhesion was shown between the hollow glass beads and the matrix. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The performance of white rice husk ash (WRHA) as filler for polypropylene (PP)/ethylene‐propylene‐diene terpolymer (EPDM) thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) composites was investigated. The composites with different filler loadings were prepared in a Brabender plasticorder internal mixer. Both unvulcanized and dynamically vulcanized composites were prepared. Mixing and vulcanization processes of the composites were monitored through the typical Brabender torque‐time curves. The mechanical properties and morphology of the composites were also studied. The Brabender torque curves revealed that the dynamic vulcanization process employed was successful and incorporation of filler has no adverse effect on the processibility of the composites. Incorporation of WRHA improves the tensile modulus and flexural modulus and lowers tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength, and toughness of both types of composites. Dynamic vulcanization significantly enhances the mechanical and TPE properties of the composites. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) study revealed the existence of two phases in both types of composites. It further shows that neither dynamic vulcanization nor filler agglomeration has played a prominent role in the compatibility of the composites. Thermogravimetric investigation shows that dynamic vulcanization or WRHA loading has not adversely affected the thermal stability of the composites. The scanning electron micrographs provide evidence for the tendency to form filler agglomerates with increasing filler loading, better filler dispersion of dynamically vulcanized composites over unvulcanized composites, and effective vulcanization of elastomer phase of the composites in the presence of filler. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The tensile properties of polypropylene (PP) filled with two A‐glass beads with the same size, PP/3000 (glass bead surface pretreated with a silane coupling agent) and PP/3000U (no surface pretreatment), have been measured by using an Instron materials testing machine at room temperature, to identify the effects of the filler surface pretreatment and its content on the tensile properties of these composites. The results show that the Young's modulus Ec of the composites increases non‐linearly with increasing volume fraction of glass beads ϕf, while the tensile yield strength σyc and tensile stress at break σbc of the composites decrease with an increase of ϕf, in the ϕf range 0–30%. Furthermore, the values of Ec and σbc of the PP/3000 system are somewhat higher than those of the PP/3000U system under the same test conditions, but this is in contrast to the tensile strain at break εbc and tensile fracture energy Ebc, especially at higher ϕf values. Good agreement is shown between the measured tensile strength and the predicted value by using an equation proposed in previous work. In addition, εbc and Ebc reach maximum values at ϕf = 25% for both systems. This indicates that there is a brittle–ductile transition for the composites in tension. © 2000 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The mechanical properties and morphologies of PP/SBR/SiO2 nanocomposites have been studied using mechanical testing, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), polarizing optical microscopy (POM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical properties of neat polypropylene can be considerably improved by synergistically filling with SiO2 and SBR nanoparticles, especially for the notched Izod impact strength. The results from the WAXD, POM, SEM, DSC, and TGA measurements reveal that: (i) the β‐phase crystal structure of PP is formed when SiO2 and SBR nanoparticles are synergistically filled with polypropylene and its formation plays a role for the enhancement of the impact strength for PP/SBR/SiO2 nanocomposites; (ii) the dispersion of SiO2 and SBR nanoparticles in PP/SBR/SiO2 composites is homogeneous, indicating that synergistic incorporating method decreases the aggregation of nanoparticles and thus increases the sites for dissipation of shock for impact energy in PP/SBR/SiO2 nanocomposites; (iii) the thermal analysis shows high thermal stability for the PP/SBR/SiO2 nanocomposites. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The main objective of this study was to investigate and compare the mechanical properties of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites filled with calcium carbonate (CaCO3), talc, and talc/CaCO3. Talc and CaCO3 with different grades were incorporated into the PVC matrix. To produce the composites, the PVC resin, fillers, and other additives were first dry‐blended by using a laboratory mixer before being milled into sheets in a two‐roll mill. Test specimens were prepared by compression molding, after which the mechanical properties of the composites were determined. Single and hybrid filler loadings used were fixed at 30 phr (parts per hundred parts of resin). Talc‐filled composite showed the highest flexural modulus and the lowest impact strength, whereas uncoated, ground, 1‐μm CaCO3 (SM 90) showed optimum properties in terms of impact strength and flexural modulus among all grades of CaCO3. It was selected to combine with talc at different ratios in the hybrid composites. The impact strength of the hybrid composites gradually increased with increasing SM 90 content, but the flexural and tensile properties showed an opposite behavior. Hybrid (10 phr talc):(20 phr SM 90)‐filled PVC composite reached a synergistic hybridization with balanced properties in impact strength, as well as flexural and tensile properties. J. VINYL ADDIT. Hybrid composite samples composed of polypropylene as matrix, 20% short glass fibers (SGF) as reinforcement and varying amount of maleic anhydride (MA) grafted SEBS as compatibilizer and impact modifier were prepared by melt mixing in a modular twin screw extruder. The SEM examination performed on cryogenically fractured surfaces of hybrid samples showed a three‐phase type morphology in which SGF and rubber phase finely distributed in the PP matrix. SEM results also revealed that in the hybrid samples containing SEBS‐MA, the surface of the SGF are coated with a thin layer of SEBS‐MA, indicating a strong adhesion between SGF and matrix materials. The results of rheological studies showed nearly equal viscosity for compatible and incompatible hybrid samples. Tensile yield strength enhanced with increasing rubber content up to 10% above which it decreased and highest impact strength enhancement was obtained for sample containing 20% rubber. The impact strength of composites was found to be increased with increasing the SGF content. In final, it was shown that a good balance between stiffness and toughness could be achieved by adjusting the SGF and rubber content in this ternary system. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The anisotropy and heterogeneity of injection‐molded discs of polypropylene, talc‐filled polypropylene composites, and silane‐treated talc‐filled polypropylene composites are studied by means of dynamic mechanical analysis and thermomechanical analysis. The aims of this work are to discover the relationships between the structure of the composites, their anisotropic properties, and the heterogeneity of the molded discs. The experimental results show that although the discs are almost homogeneous, they present a high degree of anisotropy. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 77: 1275–1283, 2000  相似文献

All of the composites were prepared using Brabender internal mixer (50 rpm, 190°C) and molded using compression mold (190°C) to form test samples. The results showed that the tendency of kaolin particles to agglomerate was too strong, resulting in low strength and rigidity but fairly good toughness. To overcome the kaolin agglomerations dilemma, quaternary ammonium compound (QAC), sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), sodium hydroxide (NaOH), and polypropylene (PP) grafted maleic anhydride (PPgMAH) surface treatment agents were applied. Better dispersion of kaolin fillers were obtained with reduced size of the agglomerates. It was also found that nonreactive treatments enhanced the toughness of the composite remarkably, because of the softening effect that promotes plastic deformations. QAC was found to be the most effective dispersing agent of kaolin in PP matrix and contributes to 47% increment in the impact strength value compared to the untreated kaolin composite. QAC-treated kaolin also shows the most remarkable increment in melt flow index (MFI) and degree of crystallization (DOC) beyond other composites. To improve the dispersion and affinity of kaolin fillers to PP matrix, the processing enhancement was conducted at the end of the experiment. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To determine the possibility of using sugarcane bagasse (SCB) waste as reinforcing filler in the thermoplastic polymer matrix, SCB‐reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared. The PP and SCB composites were prepared by the extrusion of PP resin with 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt % of SCB filler in a corotating twin screw extruder. The extruded strands were cut into pellets and injection molded to make test specimens. These specimens were tested for physicomechanical properties such as tensile, flexural, Izod, and Charpy impact strengths, density, water absorption, and thermal characteristics, namely, heat deflection temperature (HDT), melt flow index, and thermogravimetric analysis. It was found that the flexural strength increased from 23.66 to 26.84 MPa, Izod impact strength increased from 10.499 to 13.23 Kg cm/cm, Charpy impact strength increased from 10.096 to 13.98 Kg cm/cm, and HDT increased from 45.5 to 66.5°C, with increase in filler loading from 5 to 20% in the PP matrix. However, the tensile strength and elongation decreased from 32.22 to 27.21 MPa and 164.4 to 11.20% respectively. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 3827–3832, 2007  相似文献

Polypropylene homopolymer melts containing up to 50 percent by weight of talc filler (24 vol%) were tested on a Gottfert Rheotens melt strength testing unit. Melt strength and drawability parameters were measured from these tests to evaluate changes in the extensional behavior of the melt induced by filler addition. It was found that the melt strength of the polypropylene was decreased for talc additions of less than 40 wt% (17.5 vol%) under all test conditions. Addition of 50 wt% talc improved the melt strength under all testing conditions. Drawability, defined as the stretch ratio at strand break, decreased with increased filler loading. The melt strength of all materials was found to decrease with increased temperature within the range 180°C to 210°C. The melt strength of all melts showed dependence on the test extrusion rate, and this dependence was well described by an exponential relationship. Highest dependencies were seen for the unfilled and 50 wt% talc‐filled polymer. While it was found that addition of 50 wt% talc provided improvement in melt strength, high melt strength alone was a poor indicator of the melt processability, as drawability was also regarded as an important consideration.  相似文献

Dynamic modulus of elasticity (MoE) and shear modulus of wood‐filled polypropylene composite at various filler contents ranging from 10% to 50% was determined from the vibration frequencies of disc‐shaped specimens. Wood filler was used in both fiber form (pulp) and powder form (wood flour). A novel compatibilizer, m‐isopropenyl‐α,α‐dimethylbenzyl‐isocyanate(m‐TMI) grafted polypropylene with isocyanate functional group was used to prepare the composites. A linear increase in dynamic MoE, shear modulus, and density of the composite was observed with the increasing filler content. Between the two fillers, wood fiber filled composites exhibited slightly better properties. At 50% filler loading, dynamic MoE of the wood fiber filled composite was 97% higher than that of unfilled polypropylene. Halpin‐Tsai model equation was used to describe the changes in the composite modulus with the increasing filler content. The continuous improvement in elastic properties of the composites with the increasing wood filler is attributed to the effective reinforcement of low‐modulus polypropylene matrix with the high‐modulus wood filler. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Mechanical properties such as tensile and flexural properties as well as impact behavior of nickel-powder–filled isotactic polypropylene composites were investigated in the composite composition range 0–3.5 volume % Ni. Tensile modulus, strength, and elongation-at-break decreased with increase in Ni content, which is attributed to the introduction of discontinuity in the structure. Analysis of tensile strength data indicated the introduction of stress concentration consequent upon addition of Ni into polypropylene. Izod impact strength at first increased up to a critical Ni content beyond which the value decreased inappreciably while flexural modulus and strength increased with filler concentration.  相似文献
