Similarity analysis is performed for hydraulically rough open channel flow over a gravel bed to provide mixed outer scaling of the mean-velocity profile. The analysis is based on equilibrium turbulent boundary-layer theory derived using the asymptotic invariance principle. Outer scaling based on the similarity theory is validated with velocity measurements from the laboratory and field, having a Reynolds number range that includes 1×104, 1×105, and 1×106 and a Froude number range from 0.26 to 0.83. The results show that the free-stream velocity is an appropriate outer scale for gravel-bed river flows at moderate and bankfull stage. The results agree well with the velocity measurements and collapse laboratory and field data, which allow an important connection between open channel research in the laboratory and the applications for which the research is performed in the field. The results show that the R/aD84 roughness parameter is consistent with the mixed scale used in boundary-layer velocity scaling. This is in agreement with the consistent turbulent structure of the flow for both flat plate boundary-layer and open channel flow scenarios. While R/D84 has been used empirically with depth-averaged velocity and roughness laws for many years, this roughness parameter is shown in a theoretical context due to its influence on the turbulent structure of the flow. The results are applicable to modeling the velocity distribution under fundamental gravel-bed flow cases that span to the bankfull flow regime, which provides a contribution to stream engineering.  相似文献

Numerical Modeling of Bed Deformation in Laboratory Channels   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A depth-average model using a finite-volume method with boundary-fitted grids has been developed to calculate bed deformation in alluvial channels. The model system consists of an unsteady hydrodynamic module, a sediment transport module and a bed-deformation module. The hydrodynamic module is based on the two-dimensional shallow water equations. The sediment transport module is comprised of semiempirical models of suspended load and nonequilibrium bedload. The bed-deformation module is based on the mass balance for sediment. The secondary flow transport effects are taken into account by adjusting the dimensionless diffusivity coefficient in the depth-average version of the k–ε turbulence model. A quasi-three-dimensional flow approach is used to simulate the effect of secondary flows due to channel curvature on bed-load transport. The effects of bed slope on the rate and direction of bed-load transport are also taken into account. The developed model has been validated by computing the scour hole and the deposition dune produced by a jet discharged into a shallow pool with movable bed. Two further applications of the model are presented in which the bed deformation is calculated in curved alluvial channels under steady- and unsteady-flow conditions. The predictions are compared with data from laboratory measurements. Generally good agreement is obtained.  相似文献

An exponential distribution of the bed-pressure fluctuations is used to estimate the depth within a porous gravel bed from which fine sediment of a given size can be removed. The coarsest grain size of the fine sediment that might be washed out is of O(10?1) in relation to both the gravel grain size and the equivalent grain roughness. A higher equivalent grain roughness results to a larger absolute cleaning depth, whereas the averaged gravel grain size is seen to be less important. The results are successfully tested for plausibility against the grain size distributions of an armored gravel bed and its underlaying bimodal layer as found in situ in the river Rhine. However, qualitative and quantitative experimental data for an in-depth validation remain to be performed.  相似文献

Bed load discharge formulas have been evaluated by analyzing them in relation to measured Helley–Smith data for the gravel-bedded armored Drau River, Austria. Comparison of calculations with measurements leads to ranking of the formulas that depends on the evaluation parameters. The choice of formula is made with respect to our specific aims: the investigation of individual floods requires a different approach from that of long-term budgets. Formula performance is consistently improved when conditions for the threshold of motion are modified according to data measured up on the initiation of motion. Formulas such as those reported by Parker in 1990, Zanke in 1999, and Sun and Donahue in 2000 are capable of coping with partial transport, which is commonly found in Alpine rivers. These formulas therefore provide encouraging results, particularly after the introduction of modifications. The augmentation of field measurements, even if limited in scope, considerably improves the performance of bed load discharge formulas.  相似文献

This study evaluated fluctuations in the output signal of a densimeter, an in situ suspended-sediment measurement device based on a very sensitive differential pressure transducer. Although the densimeter produced accurate (less than 10% error) results in the laboratory for concentrations of 10–1,000?mg/L, there was a much larger fluctuation in the field test output signal. These fluctuations were hypothesized to have originated from fluctuations imparted by movement of bed material on the channel bottom. Measuring root mean square and mean velocities and corresponding pressure differences at locations in front of and behind a bluff body simulated movement of a body/bed form past a sampling point in a quasistatic manner. Position of the bluff body relative to the sample port resulted in differential pressure swings equivalent to 65,000?mg/L sediment concentration. Turbulent structure changed dramatically with position of the bluff body. Thus, pressure densitometry using a differential pressure transducer is likely not a reliable system for measuring sediment concentration under in-stream conditions, particularly near the channel bottom where bed forms and large objects may pass between the sample ports.  相似文献

A field investigation in ten gravel bed stream reaches determined that substrate disturbance depth associated with a moving bedload layer was a small multiple of the bed surface D90. Disturbance depth during plane bed transport of coarse, heterogeneous mixtures appeared similar in magnitude to particle exchange depth and moving layer thickness. Maximum disturbance depth was distributed approximately uniformly over the most active areas of the streambed when local scour and fill were negligible. The distribution upper bound was the smaller of approximately 1.5 times the competent grain size or twice the surface D90, and was invariant with flow strength once the largest grains present were mobilized. Disturbance depth did not scale with grain sizes smaller than D50 when larger grains were mobilized. Thicker traction carpets were not predicted to occur because much larger shear stresses then observed naturally were needed to mobilize two or more layers of the bed simultaneously. Bedload transport rate in coarse streambeds is suggested to increase primarily with mobile fraction of bed surface area and grain velocity, than with layer thickness.  相似文献

Influence of Turbulence on Bed Load Sediment Transport   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
This paper summarizes the results of an experimental study on the influence of an external turbulence field on the bed load sediment transport in an open channel. The external turbulence was generated by (1) a horizontal pipe placed halfway through the depth h; (2) a series of grids with a clearance of about one-third of the depth from the bed, and extending over a finite length of the flume; and (3) a series of grids with a clearance in the range (0.1–1.0)h from the bed, but extending over the entire length of the flume. Two kinds of experiments were conducted: plane-bed experiments and ripple-covered-bed experiments. In the former case, the flow in the presence of the turbulence generator was adjusted so that the mean bed shear stress was the same as in the case without the turbulence generator in order to single out the effect of the external turbulence on the sediment transport. In the ripple-covered-bed case, the mean and turbulence quantities of the streamwise component of the velocity were measured, and the Shields parameter, due to skin friction, was determined. The Shields parameter, together with the RMS value of the streamwise velocity fluctuations, was correlated with the sediment transport rate. The sediment transport increases markedly with increasing turbulence level.  相似文献

An acoustic Doppler velocimeter was used to characterize turbulence in two gravel bed rivers. Data were collected in unobstructed flow and compared to recent investigations. Additional data collected in the wake of emergent boulders indicate that mean flow velocity, turbulent kinetic energy, gradients in the streamwise velocity, and Reynolds stress downstream from large rocks deviate from unobstructed flow results, but similar turbulence patterns are found behind each boulder. Results of this study are discussed with regard to natural channel design and fish habitat.  相似文献

This research aims to advance current knowledge on cluster formation and evolution by tackling some of the aspects associated with cluster microtopography and the effects of clusters on bedload transport. The specific objectives of the study are (1) to identify the bed shear stress range in which clusters form and disintegrate, (2) to quantitatively describe the spacing characteristics and orientation of clusters with respect to flow characteristics, (3) to quantify the effects clusters have on the mean bedload rate, and (4) to assess the effects of clusters on the pulsating nature of bedload. In order to meet the objectives of this study, two main experimental scenarios, namely, Test Series A and B (20 experiments overall) are considered in a laboratory flume under well-controlled conditions. Series A tests are performed to address objectives (1) and (2) while Series B is designed to meet objectives (3) and (4). Results show that cluster microforms develop in uniform sediment at 1.25 to 2 times the Shields parameter of an individual particle and start disintegrating at about 2.25 times the Shields parameter. It is found that during an unsteady flow event, effects of clusters on bedload transport rate can be classified in three different phases: a sink phase where clusters absorb incoming sediment, a neutral phase where clusters do not affect bedload, and a source phase where clusters release particles. Clusters also increase the magnitude of the fluctuations in bedload transport rate, showing that clusters amplify the unsteady nature of bedload transport. A fourth-order autoregressive, autoregressive integrated moving average model is employed to describe the time series of bedload and provide a predictive formula for predicting bedload at different periods. Finally, a change-point analysis enhanced with a binary segmentation procedure is performed to identify the abrupt changes in the bedload statistic characteristics due to the effects of clusters and detect the different phases in bedload time series using probability theory. The analysis verifies the experimental findings that three phases are detected in the bedload rate time series structure, namely, sink, neutral, and source.  相似文献

The overall, spatially averaged, mean magnitude of local, spatially averaged (over a small area enclosing the particles’ projected area), instantaneous, critical Shields shear-stress parameters required for incipient motion of uniform-sized sand grains, independent of the bed shear-velocity particle Reynolds number, equal to 0.16, is obtained from calibration of a theory for bed load sediment transport, by minimizing the sum of the squares of the deviations between theoretical and experimental bed load rates. Additionally, optimized expressions for a proposed probability density distribution of the bed shear stresses, for its standard deviation, for finite, maximum, and minimum bed shear stresses, and a bed load rate are obtained. In terms of the mean fluid shear stress, a dimensionless, critical, shear-stress parameter equal to 0.0513 is obtained. Investigation of the probability density distribution of the spatially varying, critical shear stresses would allow a more accurate formulation for the case of low transport rates.  相似文献

This experimental study is devoted to quantification of the near-bed turbulence characteristics at an entrainment threshold of noncohesive sediments. Near the bed, the departure in the distributions of the observed time-averaged streamwise velocity from the logarithmic law is more for immobile beds than for entrainment-threshold beds. In the Reynolds shear stress distributions, a damping that occurs near the bed for sediment entrainment is higher than that for immobile beds. Quadrant analysis reveals that in the near-bed flow zone, ejections and sweeps on immobile beds cancel each other, giving rise to the outward interactions, whereas sweeps are the dominant mechanism toward sediment entrainment. The bursting duration for entrainment-threshold beds is smaller than that for immobile beds. On the other hand, the bursting frequency for entrainment-threshold beds is larger than that for immobile beds. The third-order correlations indicate that during sediment entrainment, a streamwise acceleration associated with a downward flux and advection of streamwise Reynolds normal stress is prevalent. The streamwise and the downward vertical fluxes of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) increase with sediment entrainment. The TKE budget proves that for sediment entrainment, the pressure energy diffusion changes drastically to a negative magnitude, indicating a gain in turbulence production.  相似文献

The statistics of pressure fluctuations above and within three types of porous granular beds such as in gravel bed streams, rivers, and man-made canals are investigated by data gained via laboratory flume experiments. The flow conditions examined include a diversity of hydrodynamic loads that increase up to the point where single grains are moving from time to time, without causing severe modification to the bed texture and the related positions of the pressure sensors. Analysis is performed by means of histograms and spectral techniques and vertical intensity profiles. Two simplified equations are found that describe the vertical decrease for the standard deviation of the measured fluctuations indicating drag and lift, respectively, nondimensionalized by the mean bed shear stress. The former fluctuation is described by a crude linear fit, whereas the latter clearly shows that the lift intensity decreases exponentially in the porous bed with a decay distance of one to two times the equivalent grain roughness. Within the subsurface layer the standard deviation reaches a nonzero constant, mainly dominated by long-wave pressure fields that are convected in the outer flow. These findings can be used in future sediment transport models that use force balance approaches to determine incipient motion conditions.  相似文献

This paper presents a method to predict depth-averaged velocity and bed shear stress for overbank flows in straight rectangular two-stage channels. An analytical solution to the depth-integrated Navier–Stokes equation is presented that includes the effects of bed friction, lateral turbulence, and secondary flows. The Shiono and Knight method accounts for bed shear, lateral shear, and secondary flow effects via three coefficients, f, λ, and Γ, respectively. A novel boundary condition at the internal wall between the main channel and the adjoined floodplain is proposed and discussed along with other conventional boundary conditions. The analytical solution using the novel boundary condition gives good prediction of both lateral velocity distribution and bed shear stress when compared with experimental data for different aspect ratios.  相似文献

The bed morphology of mountain rivers is characterized primarily by the presence of distinguishable isolated roughness elements, such boulders or clasts. The objective of this experimental study was to provide a unique insight into the role of an array of clasts in regulating sand movement over gravel beds for low relative submergence conditions, H/dc<1, and flow depth, H, to the diameter of the clast, dc, a process that has not been studied thoroughly. To assess the role of clasts in controlling incoming sand movement, detailed flume experiments were conducted by placing 40 equally spaced clasts atop a well-packed glass bead bed for replicating the isolated roughness flow regime. The experiments were performed for moderate ( ~ 2.50τcr* where τcr* is the critical dimensionless bed shear stress) and high ( ~ 5.50τcr*) applied bed shear stress conditions, representative of gravel bed rivers. For comparison purposes, experiments were also repeated for nearly identical flow conditions but without the presence of clasts to discern the potential effects that clasts may have on sediment movement and hydraulics within the clast array region and also in the upstream section of the clast region where few observations exist. The experimental results revealed the formation of two distinguishable bed morphological features, namely a funnel shaped “sand ridge” upstream from the clast array region and small depositional “sand patches” around individual clasts. The sand patches were formed in the stoss region of the clasts, which contradicted previous observations of depositional patterns around clasts under high relative submergence conditions (H/dc>1) where, in this case, depositional patches were observed to have formed in the clast wake region. Furthermore, most of the incoming sand was found to be intercepted by the evolving sand ridge upstream from the clast array region with implications in the amount of sand entering the clast array region. The exiting bed-load rate was found to be reduced by a factor of ~ 5.0–20, depending on the prevailing flow conditions when experiments with and without clasts were compared under nearly identical flow conditions. The findings of this research, although limited to the isolated roughness regime, may have significant ramifications in stream restoration projects for the design of engineered riffle sections, which typically consist of an array of clasts installed to improve degraded waterways and aquatic habitat.  相似文献

The capability of acoustic Doppler velocimeters to resolve flow turbulence is analyzed. Acoustic Doppler velocimeter performance curves (APCs) are introduced to define optimal flow and sampling conditions for measuring turbulence. To generate the APCs, a conceptual model is developed which simulates different flow conditions as well as the instrument operation. Different scenarios are simulated using the conceptual model to generate synthetic time series of water velocity and the corresponding sampled signals. Main turbulence statistics of the synthetically generated, sampled, and nonsampled time series are plotted in dimensionless form (APCs). The relative importance of the Doppler noise on the total measured energy is also evaluated for different noise energy levels and flow conditions. The proposed methodology can be used for the design of experimental measurements, as well as for the interpretation of both field and laboratory observations using acoustic Doppler velocimeters.  相似文献

The influence of suspended sediments on coherent flow structures has been studied by simultaneously measuring the longitudinal and vertical components of the instantaneous velocity vector and the instantaneous suspended particle concentration with an acoustic particle flux profiler. The measurements were carried out in clear water and in particle-laden open-channel flows. In both cases, they clearly show the predominance of ejection and sweep phases that are part of a burst cycle. The analysis further demonstrates the importance of the ejection and sweep phases in sediment resuspension and transport. Ejections pick up the sediment at the bed and carry it up through the water column close to the surface. It is shown that ejections and sweeps are in near equality in the near-bottom layer, whereas ejections clearly dominate in the remaining water column. The implications of these results for sediment transport dynamics are discussed.  相似文献

The study is aimed at investigating the mean flow and turbulence characteristics in scour geometry developed near a circular cylinder of length 10cm placed over the sand bed transverse to the flow. The obstacle placed on a sand bed, on the way of a unidirectional flow, develops a crescent-shaped scour mark on the bed. The scour is caused by generation of vortex developed on the upstream side of the obstacle. Sand grains eroded by this vortex, are deposited on the downstream side of the obstacle as wakes. The turbulent flow field within the scour mark was measured in a laboratory flume using an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter (ADV). The scour marks named as current crescents preserved in geological record are traditionally used as indicators of palaeocurrent direction. The distribution of mean velocity components, turbulent intensities and Reynolds stresses at different positions of the mark are presented. The experimental evidence also shows that the geometric characteristics of the scour mark (width) depend primarily on the cylinder aspect ratio, cylinder Reynolds number and sediment Froude number.  相似文献

An existing two-dimensional mobile-bed hydrodynamic model has been modified to simulate bed-load transport in a complex gravel-bed river. We investigated the sensitivity of predicted bed load to control parameters, and compared model predictions of flow depth, shear stress, and gravel transport with field measurements made from the river. The predictions are based on concurrent field data of flow discharge, water level, and sediment for model input. The model takes into account multiple-fraction transport rates, and continuously updates the river bed and surface grain-size distribution. The model predictions are in reasonable agreement with field measurements.  相似文献
