  1. Although considered a key functional trait, little is known about how zooplankton feeding mode affects top‐down regulation of phytoplankton communities. Indeed, copepods are expected to promote the dominance of toxic phytoplankton by selective removal of their edible competitors; however, empirical evidence comparing the effect among calanoid and cyclopoid copepods is lacking.
  2. We compared the top‐down effects of two copepods with contrasting feeding modes—the calanoid Notodiaptomus iheringi (current feeder) and the cyclopoid Thermocyclops decipiens (ambush feeder) — on the relative and absolute biomass of the filamentous cyanobacterium Raphidiopsis raciborskii co‐cultured with the nutritious eukaryotic phytoplankton Cryptomonas obovata in a week‐long laboratory assay.
  3. The current feeder had a stronger top‐down effect on the biomass of both prey throughout the experiment, with mass‐specific clearance rates 3–5× higher than ambush feeder. By the end of the experiment, the current feeder significantly reduced cyanobacteria biomass compared to controls while the ambush feeder did not. During the week‐long experiment, the current feeder switched from grazing on edible prey to cyanobacteria as the former became less abundant.
  4. Contrary to expectation, neither of the copepod species promoted cyanobacterial dominance by the end of the experiment. This is because both grazers, but especially the current feeder, initially increased but subsequently decreased the relative contribution of cyanobacteria to total phytoplankton biomass. Moreover, both copepods decreased the length of cyanobacteria filaments by c. 70%
  5. Current feeders can switch from edible prey to cyanobacteria when the abundance of shortened filaments surpasses the abundance of edible prey. While top‐down regulation of phytoplankton can be stronger for current feeding copepods, ambush feeding copepods can have a significant role during blooms by shortening cyanobacterial filaments. Hence, the broader role of contrasting copepod feeding traits on phytoplankton communities merits further study.

  1. Many aquatic organisms can consume parasite larvae, thus hampering parasite transmission; however, information about feeding on them in the presence of an alternative prey remains scarce. When having a food choice, predators may decrease parasite consumption, therefore, it is important to assess the role of parasites in the diet of predators in natural communities with different types of prey available. Our study aims to test whether common freshwater cyclopoids feed on trematode free-living stages (cercariae) when an alternative food source is present.
  2. We experimentally studied ingestion rates of cyclopoids Macrocyclops distinctus fed with cercariae of trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, a common and harmful parasite of freshwater fishes, and ciliates Paramecium caudatum (an alternative prey, known as suitable food for copepods). First, the feeding response of cyclopoids to different densities of each prey was studied. Then, feeding selectivity in the mixtures of cercariae and ciliates was tested.
  3. Feeding rates of cyclopoids increased with prey densities (both ciliates and cercariae) but almost stopped growing at high prey densities, which indicated saturation (Holling type II functional response). In most cases, cyclopoids consumed cercariae at higher rates than ciliates. Maximum ingestion rates estimated from the obtained curves were 37 cercariae ind−1 hr−1 and 17 ciliate ind−1 hr−1.
  4. When exposed to prey mixtures, cyclopoids fed on cercariae selectively. When cercariae were offered to cyclopoids at concentrations exceeding the saturation level, the ingestion of ciliates remained constantly low at all ciliate densities. In contrast, the ingestion of cercariae increased with rising cercariae densities even when ciliates were presented ad libitum, decreasing only at very high prey densities. Possible reasons of such feeding preferences are discussed.
  5. Our study demonstrated that cyclopoids may prefer to feed on cercariae when there is an alternative food choice and can ingest cercariae at high rates. These experimental results could be extended to natural communities, suggesting that cyclopoids can reduce the transmission of parasites and contribute to the incorporation of parasite production in food webs of lentic ecosystems.

  1. Although the amino acid composition of fishes and some marine invertebrates varies among taxa and systems, similar information is lacking for freshwater invertebrates. The objectives were to characterise and compare the amino acid composition among different aquatic species, dietary habits, and environmental conditions.
  2. Benthic macroinvertebrates from different functional feeding groups (FFG), bulk zooplankton, biofilm, and fishes representing 12 families (21 genera or species) were collected from temperate lakes in eastern Canada during the summers of 2013 and 2014. Fifteen protein-bound amino acids, including thiols, were measured in whole invertebrates, biofilm, or fish muscle. We hypothesised that the amino acid composition will differ among species and systems.
  3. Multiple discriminant analyses revealed significant differences in the amino acid composition among species—based on varying percentages of cysteine (as cysteic acid) and histidine—and among FFG/trophic designations—based on histidine and lysine—where the primary consumers were more variable than the predators.
  4. Overall, the results suggest that patterns were based on phylogenetics, biological characteristics, and the FFG/trophic designations of biota.
  5. The within-taxon variability in composition was also related to differences among lakes. Characteristics of their environment, including lake pH and the food web structure (abundance and composition of taxa), probably influenced their dietary habits and amino acid composition of diet.
  6. These results expand the currently limited knowledge of the biochemical composition of freshwater biota and provide impetus for further studies on nutritional values in predator-prey relationships, trophic guilds, and the biomagnification of protein-bound contaminants through food webs.

  1. Filter‐feeding zooplankton in lakes feed on a mixture of phytoplankton, bacteria, and terrestrial particles and the proportions and nutritional value of these components can be highly variable. However, the extent to which food quality interacts with food quantity in affecting overall zooplankton performance is not yet fully resolved.
  2. Here we performed laboratory feeding experiments to test how the performance of the unselective filter feeder Daphnia galeata was affected if various quantities of high‐quality food (the phytoplankton Rhodomonas) were diluted with low‐quality food such as heterotrophic bacteria (Pseudomonas) or terrestrial detritus particles (t‐POM) from the riparian zone of a boreal forest stream. We hypothesised: that increased proportions of bacteria and t‐POM in the diet will lead to decreased survival, somatic growth; and reproduction of Daphnia despite the presence of phytoplankton; that these effects are more pronounced for t‐POM than for heterotrophic bacteria; and that this response is stronger when phytoplankton availability is low.
  3. Increasing the concentrations of Pseudomonas affected Daphnia survival, growth, and reproduction negatively when Rhodomonas was available at intermediate (0.37 mgC/L) and high (0.55 mgC/L) quantities. When Rhodomonas quantity was low (0.22 mgC/L), the addition of Pseudomonas generally resulted in better Daphnia performance except at very high concentrations of the bacterium relative to Rhodomonas. In contrast, the addition of t‐POM was detrimental for overall Daphnia performance at all Rhodomonas concentrations.
  4. Daphnia performance was best described by a model including the interaction between food quality and quantity, with stronger negative effects on Daphnia when high‐quality food was supplemented with t‐POM than with Pseudomonas.
  5. The results indicate that the ability of zooplankton to use low‐quality food is affected by the concurrent availability of high‐quality food. Furthermore, food sources that can be used but do not fulfil dietary requirements of grazers (e.g. bacteria), may still provide nutritional benefits as long as other complementary food components are available in sufficient quantities to compensate for biochemical deficiencies.
  6. Therefore, we conclude that heterotrophic bacteria, but not peat layer t‐POM, can be an important component of zooplankton diets in boreal lakes, especially if the concentration of phytoplankton is low.

  1. Glacial retreat, accompanied by shifts in riparian vegetation and glacier meltwater inputs, alters the energy supply and trophic structure of alpine stream food webs. Our goal in this study was to enhance understanding of dietary niches of macroinvertebrates inhabiting different alpine streams with contrasting glacial and non‐glacial (groundwater, precipitation, snowmelt) water inputs in conjunction with seasonal and habitat‐specific variation in basal resource availability.
  2. We measured a range of stream physico‐chemical attributes as well as carbon and nitrogen isotopes (δ13C, δ15N) of macroinvertebrates and primary food sources at seven sites across seasons within a Swiss glaciated catchment (Val Roseg) undergoing rapid glacial retreat (1–2 km between 1997 and 2014). Sampling sites corresponded to streams used in a previous (1997/1998) study within the same alpine catchment.
  3. Physico‐chemical attributes showed wide variation in environmental conditions across streams and seasons. Significant correlation among physico‐chemical proxies of glacier meltwater (phosphate‐P, total inorganic carbon, conductivity, turbidity) and macroinvertebrate δ13C, δ15N, and size‐corrected standard ellipse area (a proxy for feeding niche width) values showed that the extent of glacial water input shapes the energy base among alpine streams. Feeding niche differences among common alpine stream insect taxa (Chironomidae, Baetidae, Heptageniidae) were not significant, indicating that these organisms probably are plastic in feeding behaviour, opportunistically relying on food resources available in a particular stream and season.
  4. Seasonal trends in macroinvertebrate δ13C largely followed patterns in periphyton δ13C values, indicating that autochthonous resources were the main consumer energy source within the stream network, as shown previously. The overall range in macroinvertebrate δ13C (?33.5 to ?18.4‰) and δ15N (?6.9 to 6.7‰) values also corresponded to values measured in the previous study, suggesting that macroinvertebrates altered diets in line with changes in environmental conditions and food resources during a period of rapid glacial retreat. Our results suggest that environmental changes brought on by rapid glacial retreat have not yet caused a profound change in the trophic structure within these fluvial networks.

  • 1 Secondary production and emergence of aquatic insects were examined in the outlet of Lake Belau, Northern Germany, by means of benthic samples and emergence traps.
  • 2 At three stream sections annual larval secondary production varied between 4.9 and 10.8 gDM (dry mass) m‐2 year‐1. Insects contributed with 3.4, 8.9, and 8.7% to the total macroinvertebrate production that varied between 56.5 and 215.1 gDM m‐2 year‐1. Emerged biomass was between 1.0 and 2.0 gDM m‐2 year‐1. At all three stream sections Diptera dominated with a larval production of 3.0–l6.1 gDM m‐2 year‐1, followed by Trichoptera with 1.0–2.1 and Ephemeroptera with up to 0.9 gDM m‐2 year‐1.
  • 3 Average larval production amounted to 9.0 gDM m‐2 year‐1 and emerged biomass to 1.7 gDM m‐2 year‐1. Larvae of insects amounted to 7.0% of total macroinvertebrate production.
  • 4 The ratio of annual emerged biomass to secondary production (E/P) varied among individual taxa. At the stream sections the ratio ranged from 15.9% to 20.1% with an average of 18.3% for the stream.
  • 5 Relative constancy of the E/P ratio suggests that the determination of emerged biomass can be used as a method for estimating the secondary production of aquatic insects. The composition of functional feeding groups clearly differs between emerged biomass and total macroinvertebrate production. Therefore, the method does not allow conclusions on the level of production of the whole benthic community. However, composition of functional feeding groups at emergence roughly reflects composition of these groups in the benthic insect community.

  1. Shrub encroachment has far‐reaching ecological and economic consequences in many ecosystems worldwide. Yet, compositional changes associated with shrub encroachment are often overlooked despite having important effects on ecosystem functioning.
  2. We document the compositional change and potential drivers for a northern Namibian Combretum woodland transitioning into a Terminalia shrubland. We use a multiproxy record (pollen, sedimentary ancient DNA, biomarkers, compound‐specific carbon (δ13C) and deuterium (δD) isotopes, bulk carbon isotopes (δ13Corg), grain size, geochemical properties) from Lake Otjikoto at high taxonomical and temporal resolution.
  3. We provide evidence that state changes in semiarid environments may occur on a scale of one century and that transitions between stable states can span around 80 years and are characterized by a unique vegetation composition. We demonstrate that the current grass/woody ratio is exceptional for the last 170 years, as supported by n‐alkane distributions and the δ13C and δ13Corg records. Comparing vegetation records to environmental proxy data and census data, we infer a complex network of global and local drivers of vegetation change. While our δD record suggests physiological adaptations of woody species to higher atmospheric pCO2 concentration and drought, our vegetation records reflect the impact of broad‐scale logging for the mining industry, and the macrocharcoal record suggests a decrease in fire activity associated with the intensification of farming. Impact of selective grazing is reflected by changes in abundance and taxonomical composition of grasses and by an increase of nonpalatable and trampling‐resistant taxa. In addition, grain‐size and spore records suggest changes in the erodibility of soils because of reduced grass cover.
  4. Synthesis. We conclude that transitions to an encroached savanna state are supported by gradual environmental changes induced by management strategies, which affected the resilience of savanna ecosystems. In addition, feedback mechanisms that reflect the interplay between management legacies and climate change maintain the encroached state.

  1. Microplastics (particles <5 mm) are commonly found in aquatic organisms across taxonomic groups and ecosystems. However, the egestion rate of microplastics from aquatic organisms and how egestion rates compare to other rates of microplastic movement in the environment are sparsely documented.
  2. We fed microplastic fibres to round gobies (Neogobius melanostomus), an abundant, invasive species in the Laurentian Great Lakes. We conducted two trials where round gobies were fed microplastic-containing food either a single time (1 day) or every day over 7 days.
  3. There was no difference in microplastic egestion rates from the 1 day or 7 day feeding trials, suggesting no impact of duration of exposure on egestion (exponential decay rate = −0.055 [±0.016 SE] and −0.040 [±0.007 SE], respectively). Turnover time of microplastics (i.e., average time from ingestion to egestion) in the gut ranged from 18.2 to 25.0 hr, similar to published values for other freshwater taxa.
  4. We also measured microplastics in the digestive tracts of round gobies collected directly from Lake Michigan, U.S.A. Using published values for round goby density and microplastic concentration at the study sites, we calculated areal egestion rate by round gobies (no. particles m–2 day–1), and compared it to riverine microplastic export (no. particles m–2 day–1). Both area-based rates were of the same order of magnitude, suggesting that round goby egestion could be an important, and potentially overlooked component of microplastic dynamics at the ecosystem scale.
  5. Animal egestion is well-known as a major component of nutrient and carbon cycling. However, direct measurements of microplastic fluxes in the environment that include animal egestion rates are uncommon. An ecosystem ecology approach is needed to meet the emerging challenge of generating microplastic budgets for freshwater environments and elsewhere, thereby informing management and mitigation of plastic pollution at a global scale.
