As parallel and distributed computing gradually becomes the computing standard for large scale problems, the domain decomposition method (DD) has received growing attention since it provides a natural basis for splitting a large problem into many small problems, which can be submitted to individual computing nodes and processed in a parallel fashion. This approach not only provides a method to solve large scale problems that are not solvable on a single computer by using direct sparse solvers but also gives a flexible solution to deal with large scale problems with localized non‐linearities. When some parts of the structure are modified, only the corresponding subdomains and the interface equation that connects all the subdomains need to be recomputed. In this paper, the dual–primal finite element tearing and interconnecting method (FETI‐DP) is carefully investigated, and a reduced back‐substitution (RBS) algorithm is proposed to accelerate the time‐consuming preconditioned conjugate gradient (PCG) iterations involved in the interface problems. Linear–non‐linear analysis (LNA) is also adopted for large scale problems with localized non‐linearities based on subdomain linear–non‐linear identification criteria. This combined approach is named as the FETI‐DP‐RBS‐LNA algorithm and demonstrated on the mechanical analyses of a welding problem. Serial CPU costs of this algorithm are measured at each solution stage and compared with that from the IBM Watson direct sparse solver and the FETI‐DP method. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed computational approach for simulating welding problems, which is representative of a large class of three‐dimensional large scale problems with localized non‐linearities. The dual‐primal finite element tearing and interconnecting method (FETI‐DP) is extended to systems of linear equations arising from a finite element discretization for a class of fluid–structure interaction problems in the frequency domain. A preconditioned generalized minimal residual method is used to solve the linear equations for the Lagrange multipliers introduced on the subdomain boundaries to enforce continuity of the solution. The coupling between the fluid and the structure on the fluid–structure interface requires an appropriate choice of coarse level degrees of freedom in the FETI‐DP algorithm to achieve fast convergence. Several choices are proposed and tested by numerical experiments on three‐dimensional fluid–structure interaction problems in the mid‐frequency regime that demonstrate the greatly improved performance of the proposed algorithm over the standard FETI‐DP method. The dual‐primal finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI‐DP) domain decomposition method (DDM) is extended to address the iterative solution of a class of indefinite problems of the form ( K ?σ2 M ) u = f , and a class of complex problems of the form ( K ?σ2 M +iσ D ) u = f , where K , M , and D are three real symmetric matrices arising from the finite element discretization of solid and shell dynamic problems, i is the imaginary complex number, and σ is a real positive number. A key component of this extension is a new coarse problem based on the free‐space solutions of Navier's equations of motion. These solutions are waves, and therefore the resulting DDM is reminiscent of the FETI‐H method. For this reason, it is named here the FETI‐DPH method. For a practically large σ range, FETI‐DPH is shown numerically to be scalable with respect to all of the problem size, substructure size, and number of substructures. The CPU performance of this iterative solver is illustrated on a 40‐processor computing system with the parallel solution, for various σ ranges, of several large‐scale, indefinite, or complex‐valued systems of equations associated with shifted eigenvalue and forced frequency response structural dynamics problems. When the different parts of a structure are modelled independently by BEM or FEM methods, it is sometimes necessary to put the parts together without remeshing of the nodes along the part interfaces. Frequently the nodes do not match along the interface. In this work, the symmetric Galerkin multi‐zone curved boundary element is a fully symmetric formulation and is the method used for the boundary element part. For BEM–FEM coupling it is then necessary to interpolate the tractions in‐between the non‐matching nodes for the FEM part. Finally, the coupling is achieved by transforming the finite element domains to equivalent boundary element domains in a block symmetric formulation. An implicit a posteriori finite element error estimation method is presented to inexpensively calculate lower and upper bounds for a linear functional output of the numerical solutions to the three‐dimensional Navier–Stokes (N–S) equations. The novelty of this research is to utilize an augmented Lagrangian based on a coarse mesh linearization of the N–S equations and the finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI) procedure. The latter approach extends the a posteriori bound method to the three‐dimensional Crouzeix–Raviart space for N–S problems. The computational advantage of the bound procedure is that a single coupled non‐symmetric large problem can be decomposed into several uncoupled symmetric small problems. A simple model problem, which is selected here to illustrate the procedure, is to find the lower and upper bounds of the average velocity of a pressure driven, incompressible, steady Newtonian fluid flow moving at low Reynolds numbers through an endless square channel which has an array of rectangular obstacles. Numerical results show that the bounds for this output are rigorous, i.e. always in the asymptotic certainty regime, that they are sharp and that the required computational resources decrease significantly. A unified framework of dual‐primal finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI‐DP) algorithms is proposed for solving the system of linear equations arising from the mixed finite element approximation of incompressible Stokes equations. A distinctive feature of this framework is that it allows using both continuous and discontinuous pressures in the algorithm, whereas previous FETI‐DP methods only apply to discontinuous pressures. A preconditioned conjugate gradient method is used in the algorithm with either a lumped or a Dirichlet preconditioner, and scalable convergence rates are proved. This framework is also used to describe several previously developed FETI‐DP algorithms and greatly simplifies their analysis. Numerical experiments of solving a two‐dimensional incompressible Stokes problem demonstrate the performances of the discussed FETI‐DP algorithms represented under the same framework.Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A simple explicit–implicit finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI) algorithm (AFETI‐EI algorithm) is presented for partitioned transient analysis of linear structural systems. The present algorithm employs two decompositions. First, the total system is partitioned via spatial or domain decomposition to obtain the governing equations of motions for each partitioned domain. Second, for each partitioned subsystem, the governing equations are modally decomposed into the rigid‐body and deformational equations. The resulting rigid‐body equations are integrated by an explicit integrator, for its stability is not affected by step‐size restriction on account of zero‐frequency contents (ω = 0). The modally decomposed partitioned deformation equations of motion are integrated by an unconditionally stable implicit integration algorithm. It is shown that the present AFETI‐EI algorithm exhibits unconditional stability and that the resulting interface problem possesses the same solution matrix profile as the basic FETI static problems. The present simple dynamic algorithm, as expected, falls short of the performance of the FETI‐DP but offers a similar performance of implicit two‐level FETI‐D algorithm with a much cheaper coarse solver; hence, its simplicity may offer relatively easy means for conducting parallel analysis of both static and dynamic problems by employing the same basic scalable FETI solver, especially for research‐mode numerical experiments. A two‐level nonoverlapping Schwarz algorithm is developed for the Stokes problem. The main feature of the algorithm is that a mixed problem with both velocity and pressure unknowns is solved with a balancing domain decomposition by constraints (BDDC)‐type preconditioner, which consists of solving local Stokes problems and one global coarse problem related to only primal velocity unknowns. Our preconditioner allows to use a smaller set of primal velocity unknowns than other BDDC preconditioners without much concern on certain flux conditions on the subdomain boundaries and the inf–sup stability of the coarse problem. In the two‐dimensional case, velocity unknowns at subdomain corners are selected as the primal unknowns. In addition to them, averages of each velocity component across common faces are employed as the primal unknowns for the three‐dimensional case. By using its close connection to the Dual–primal finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI‐DP algorithm) (SIAM J Sci Comput 2010; 32 : 3301–3322; SIAM J Numer Anal 2010; 47 : 4142–4162], it is shown that the resulting matrix of our algorithm has the same eigenvalues as the FETI‐DP algorithm except zero and one. The maximum eigenvalue is determined by H/h, the number of elements across each subdomains, and the minimum eigenvalue is bounded below by a constant, which does not depend on any mesh parameters. An efficient and simple approach for handling linear multipoint constraints in a class of substructure‐based solvers, namely the finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI) method, is proposed. Previously, it was argued that multipoint constraints should be handled in FETI by adding a second level iteration on a coarse grid such that the FETI iterates satisfy the multipoint constraints exactly. The procedure presented here does not require an additional coarse grid but instead takes account of the multipoint constraints in the preconditioning step. The preconditioning strategy is shown to be mechanically consistent and to incur only a small additional computational cost. This strategy is simpler and computationally less expensive than the two‐level FETI procedure. The purpose of this paper is to present an adaptive finite element–boundary element method (FEM–BEM) coupling method that is valid for both two‐ and three‐dimensional elasto‐plastic analyses. The method takes care of the evolution of the elastic and plastic regions. It eliminates the cumbersome of a trial and error process in the identification of the FEM and BEM sub‐domains in the standard FEM–BEM coupling approaches. The method estimates the FEM and BEM sub‐domains and automatically generates/adapts the FEM and BEM meshes/sub‐domains, according to the state of computation. The results for two‐ and three‐dimensional applications in elasto‐plasticity show the practicality and the efficiency of the adaptive FEM–BEM coupling method. In general, internal cells are required to solve elasticity problems by involving a gravitational load in non‐homogeneous bodies with variable mass density when using a conventional boundary element method (BEM). Then, the effect of mesh reduction is not achieved and one of the main merits of the BEM, which is the simplicity of data preparation, is lost. In this study, it is shown that the domain cells can be avoided by using the triple‐reciprocity BEM formulation, where the density of domain integral is expressed in terms of other fields that are represented by boundary densities and/or source densities at isolated interior points. Utilizing the rotational symmetry, the triple‐reciprocity BEM formulation is developed for axially symmetric elasticity problems in non‐homogeneous bodies under gravitational force. High‐resolution and anatomically realistic computer models of biological soft tissues play a significant role in the understanding of the function of cardiovascular components in health and disease. However, the computational effort to handle fine grids to resolve the geometries as well as sophisticated tissue models is very challenging. One possibility to derive a strongly scalable parallel solution algorithm is to consider finite element tearing and interconnecting (FETI) methods. In this study, we propose and investigate the application of FETI methods to simulate the elastic behavior of biological soft tissues. As one particular example, we choose the artery which is—as most other biological tissues—characterized by anisotropic and nonlinear material properties. We compare two specific approaches of FETI methods, classical and all‐floating, and investigate the numerical behavior of different preconditioning techniques. In comparison with classical FETI, the all‐floating approach not only has advantages concerning the implementation but also has advantages concerning the convergence of the global iterative solution method. This behavior is illustrated with numerical examples. We present results of linear elastic simulations to show convergence rates, as expected from the theory, and results from the more sophisticated nonlinear case where we apply a well‐known anisotropic model to the realistic geometry of an artery. Although the FETI methods have a great applicability on artery simulations, we will also discuss some limitations concerning the dependence on material parameters. The numerical modelling of interacting acoustic media by boundary element method–finite element method (BEM–FEM) coupling procedures is discussed here, taking into account time‐domain approaches. In this study, the global model is divided into different sub‐domains and each sub‐domain is analysed independently (considering BEM or FEM discretizations): the interaction between the different sub‐domains of the global model is accomplished by interface procedures. Numerical formulations based on FEM explicit and implicit time‐marching schemes are discussed, resulting in direct and optimized iterative BEM–FEM coupling techniques. A multi‐level time‐step algorithm is considered in order to improve the flexibility, accuracy and stability (especially when conditionally stable time‐marching procedures are employed) of the coupled analysis. Recently, the application of graphics processing units (GPUs) to scientific computations is attracting a great deal of attention, because GPUs are getting faster and more programmable. In particular, NVIDIA's GPUs called compute unified device architecture enable highly mutlithreaded parallel computing for non‐graphic applications. This paper proposes a novel way to accelerate the boundary element method (BEM) for three‐dimensional Helmholtz' equation using CUDA. Adopting the techniques for the data caching and the double–single precision floating‐point arithmetic, we implemented a GPU‐accelerated BEM program for GeForce 8‐series GPUs. The program performed 6–23 times faster than a normal BEM program, which was optimized for an Intel's quad‐core CPU, for a series of boundary value problems with 8000–128000 unknowns, and it sustained a performance of 167 Gflop/s for the largest problem (1 058 000 unknowns). The accuracy of our BEM program was almost the same as that of the regular BEM program using the double precision floating‐point arithmetic. In addition, our BEM was applicable to solve realistic problems. In conclusion, the present GPU‐accelerated BEM works rapidly and precisely for solving large‐scale boundary value problems for Helmholtz' equation. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The coupling of Finite Element Method (FEM) with a Boundary Element Method (BEM) is a desirable result that exploits the advantages of each. This paper examines the efficient symmetric coupling of a Symmetric Galerkin Multi‐zone Curved Boundary Element Analysis method with a Finite Element Method for 2‐D elastic problems. Existing collocation based multi‐zone boundary element methods are not symmetric. Thus, when they are coupled with FEM, it is very difficult to achieve symmetry, increasing the computational work to solve the problem. This paper uses a fully Symmetric curved Multi‐zone Galerkin Boundary Element Approach that is coupled to an FEM in a completely symmetric fashion. The symmetry is achieved by symmetrically converting the boundary zones into equivalent ‘macro finite elements’, that are symmetric, so that symmetry in the coupling is retained. This computationally efficient and fast approach can be used to solve a wide range of problems, although only 2‐D elastic problems are shown. The FETI method and its two‐level extension (FETI‐2) are two numerically scalable domain decomposition methods with Lagrange multipliers for the iterative solution of second‐order solid mechanics and fourth‐order beam, plate and shell structural problems, respectively.The FETI‐2 method distinguishes itself from the basic or one‐level FETI method by a second set of Lagrange multipliers that are introduced at the subdomain cross‐points to enforce at each iteration the exact continuity of a subset of the displacement field at these specific locations. In this paper, we present a dual–primal formulation of the FETI‐2 concept that eliminates the need for that second set of Lagrange multipliers, and unifies all previously developed one‐level and two‐level FETI algorithms into a single dual–primal FETI‐DP method. We show that this new FETI‐DP method is numerically scalable for both second‐order and fourth‐order problems. We also show that it is more robust and more computationally efficient than existing FETI solvers, particularly when the number of subdomains and/or processors is very large. A highly efficient novel Finite Element Boundary Element Method (FEBEM) is proposed for the elasto‐viscoplastic plane‐strain analysis of displacements and stresses in infinite solids. The proposed method takes advantage of both the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the Boundary Element Method (BEM) to achieve higher efficiency and accuracy by using the concept of elastic supports to simulate the effects of unbounded solid mass surrounding the region of interest. The BEM is used to compute the stiffnesses of elastic supports and to estimate the location of the truncation boundary for the finite element model. As compared to the conventional coupled FEBEM, the proposed method has three main computational advantages. Firstly, the symmetrical and highly banded form of the standard finite element stiffness matrix is not disturbed. Secondly, the proposed technique may be implemented simply by using standard codes for elasto‐viscoplastic finite element analysis and elastic boundary element analysis. Thirdly, the yielded zone is approximately located in advance by using the BEM and hence, an unnecessarily large extent of the domain does not have to be discretized for the finite element modelling. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated by computing elastic and elasto‐plastic displacements and stresses around ‘deep’ underground openings in rock mass subject to hydrostatic and non‐hydrostatic in situ stresses. A coupled finite element–boundary element analysis method for the solution of transient two‐dimensional heat conduction equations involving dissimilar materials and geometric discontinuities is developed. Along the interfaces between different material regions of the domain, temperature continuity and energy balance are enforced directly. Also, a special algorithm is implemented in the boundary element method (BEM) to treat the existence of corners of arbitrary angles along the boundary of the domain. Unknown interface fluxes are expressed in terms of unknown interface temperatures by using the boundary element method for each material region of the domain. Energy balance and temperature continuity are used for the solution of unknown interface temperatures leading to a complete set of boundary conditions in each region, thus allowing the solution of the remaining unknown boundary quantities. The concepts developed for the BEM formulation of a domain with dissimilar regions is employed in the finite element–boundary element coupling procedure. Along the common boundaries of FEM–BEM regions, fluxes from specific BEM regions are expressed in terms of common boundary (interface) temperatures, then integrated and lumped at the nodal points of the common FEM–BEM boundary so that they are treated as boundary conditions in the analysis of finite element method (FEM) regions along the common FEM–BEM boundary. We propose a coupled boundary element method (BEM) and a finite element method (FEM) for modelling localized damage growth in structures. BEM offers the flexibility of modelling large domains efficiently, while the non‐linear damage growth is accurately accounted by a local FEM mesh. An integral‐type nonlocal continuum damage mechanics with adapting FEM mesh is used to model multiple damage zones and follow their propagation in the structure. Strong form coupling, BEM hosted, is achieved using Lagrange multipliers. Because the non‐linearity is isolated in the FEM part of the system of equations, the system size is reduced using Schur complement approach, then the solution is obtained by a monolithic Newton method that is used to solve both domains simultaneously. The coupled BEM/FEM approach is verified by a set of convergence studies, where the reference solution is obtained by a fine FEM. In this paper, the stress intensity factor (SIF) variations along an arbitrarily developing crack front, the non‐planar fatigue‐crack growth patterns, and the fatigue life of a round bar with an initially straight‐fronted surface crack, are studied by employing the 3D symmetric Galerkin boundary element method‐finite element method (SGBEM‐FEM) alternating method. Different loading cases, involving tension, bending and torsion of the bar, with different initial crack depths and different stress ratios in fatigue, are considered. By using the SGBEM‐FEM alternating method, the SIF variations along the evolving crack front are computed; the fatigue growth rates and directions of the non‐planar growths of the crack surface are predicted; the evolving fatigue‐crack growth patterns are simulated, and thus, the fatigue life estimations of the cracked round bar are made. The accuracy and reliability of the SGBEM‐FEM alternating method are verified by comparing the presently computed results to the empirical solutions of SIFs, as well as experimental data of fatigue crack growth, available in the open literature. It is shown that the current approach gives very accurate solutions of SIFs and simulations of fatigue crack growth during the entire crack propagation, with very little computational burden and human–labour cost. The characteristics of fatigue growth patterns of initially simple‐shaped cracks in the cylindrical bar under different Modes I, III and mixed‐mode types of loads are also discussed in detail.  相似文献
