The paper aims at simulating the closed-system dynamic leaching of a cement-based monolith containing lead with the numerical reactive transport code HYTEC in a 3D-cylindrical geometry. The model considers, simultaneously, the chemical evolution of pore water, the progression of mineralogical alteration fronts, and the concomitant release of elements from the S/S waste. In good agreement with the experiment, element releases were found to be mainly controlled by either diffusion (Na, K, and, to a lesser extent, Cl), by surface dissolution (Ca, Si) or by a mixed evolution (Pb, SO4). All of the calculated mineralogical transformations take place in a thin layer beyond the monolith surface. Consequently, modelling of Ca, Si and SO4 releases was quite sensitive to the node size of the simulation grid and was improved by taking into account the increase of porosity and effective diffusion coefficient due to mineral dissolution in the leached layer. In agreement with experimental results, the deepest front corresponds under closed-system conditions to portlandite dissolution and calcium silicate hydrates CSH 1.8 transformation into CSH of lower Ca/Si ratio. A second, distinct and intermediate, front is made by ettringite dissolution. The network of CSH is globally preserved in the leached layer, complete dissolution occurring over a very small thickness only. Finally, hydrotalcite precipitation in the leached layer is expected by modelling due to pH drop.  相似文献

A video imaging technique is described for the homogeneity assessment of wastes that have been treated by stabilisation/solidification (S/S). The method incorporates a fluorescent tracer into the S/S reagent. A test “waste” consisting of an artificial soil was stabilised/solidified with varying degrees of mixing using Portland cement as the S/S reagent. The tracer distribution was monitored with a video camera, and the cement distribution was determined by chemical analysis for calcium. Measurement of the homogeneity of the products by the video imaging technique gave results comparable to those obtained by the chemical analysis. The results warrant use of the video imaging technique in field applications since it is easier, cheaper and faster than traditional chemical methods.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to improve the mechanical stability of a sulphide soil with additives of an industrial waste product (LD-Slag) and Portland Cement. The criterion of using LD-Slag was if it could be done in an environmentally proper way. Sequential Leaching Tests were performed on monolithic LD-Slag/Portland Cement stabilised sulphide soil samples in order to register the leachability and pollution potentials. Different pH and Eh conditions were established in these tests in order to control the leachability of Na, K, Ca and Mg, which are important during cementation processes inside as well as outside an inforced monolith, and the leachability of V, which is regarded as a pollutant. The contents of Cr and V of pure LD-Slag, monolithic samples and leachates were compared with Canadian and Finnish Maximum Containment Level standards. The investigation showed that acidic conditions will increase the leachability of V. An acidic environment will even change the physical properties of a monolith. However, acidic conditions are not likely to occur in an in-situ anaerobic sulphide soil.  相似文献

One of the main objectives of this work is to present an effective alternative for the final destination of sludge from urban waste water treatment plants by its use as a component of mortar or concrete. A binding and stabilizing matrix of sludge-cement and sludge-cement-coal fly-ash was investigated and the effects of various percentages of waste and binder, on the behavior of sludge in the system are presented. Assessment of the environmental quality of the final product and the consequent guarantee of its use in the building industry demand that it meets a number of requisites, one of which is that the effluents extracted by water action should be contamination-free, or at least that the concentration of contaminants should be below certain pre-set limits. For this a number of leaching tests must be carried out, such as the Netherlands Leaching Test .  相似文献

The leaching of lead from cement-based solidified waste forms mixed at different water/cement ratios was studied by conducting equilibrium and semi-dynamic leaching tests using deionized water and sodium chloride solutions. The results suggest that leaching of the primary constituents of the cement (calcium, silicon and sulfate) is controlled by solubility equilibria, with increased leaching into chloride solutions due to ionic strength effects. The original porosity of the waste forms increased with water/cement ratio and chloride solutions further increased it as a result of decalcification. Lead leaching was generally low, and appears to be a transport-controlled process, such that leaching correlates positively with porosity.  相似文献

An attempt was made to judge the environmental compatibility, the governing leaching mechanism, and mobility patterns in a waste–cement solidified/stabilized matrix after 21 days of curing. The mixed sludge from a steel pickling facility was stabilized by ordinary Portland cement. Iron was the major leachable metal, along with Pb, Zn, and Mn. To characterize the leaching behavior, the mobility and mechanism of leaching were determined by diffusion leaching tests. In the solidified/stabilized matrix, the mobility of all the elements studied was reduced, and average to low mobility was observed. Values for the negative log of the effective diffusion coefficient of more than 12.5 were obtained for the metals. The dominant leaching mechanisms were surface wash off in the initial stage, followed by diffusion. The environmental performance of the solidified/stabilized product when considered in terms of mass leached over 64 days was found to be satisfactory for consideration for the safe disposal and reuse of waste.  相似文献

In the present paper, a study on laboratory scale to perform a treatment for valuable metals recovery from electronic and galvanic industrial wastes, is reported. The characterisation of the waste, performed by XRD, SEM, EDX and chemical analysis, showed a high metals content in the sludge, such as Cu, Ni, Mn, Pb, Sn, W. A leaching process, coupled by electrowinning, is then proposed in order to reduce the volume of the waste material and to recover selectively valuable metals, such as Cu and Ni. During the leaching step, carried out by using H(2)SO(4), several factors were investigated (acid concentration, temperature and time of treatment). The leached liquor has been successfully treated with an electrowinning process, to recover copper and nickel. The copper and nickel depositions, were performed in acid and alkaline conditions, respectively. The Faraday yield was of about 95%. The energy consumption was 2.13 and 4.43 kWh per kg of copper and nickel recovered, respectively. At the end of the process, about 94-99% of the initial content of Cu and Ni was recovered at the cathode. The experimental results obtained, showed the technical feasibility of the process.  相似文献

A study was conducted to evaluate the leaching potential of unpaved road materials (URM) mixed with lime activated high carbon fly ashes and to evaluate groundwater impacts of barium, boron, copper, and zinc leaching. This objective was met by a combination of batch water leach tests, column leach tests, and computer modeling. The laboratory tests were conducted on soil alone, fly ash alone, and URM-fly ash-lime kiln dust mixtures. The results indicated that an increase in fly ash and lime content has significant effects on leaching behavior of heavy metals from URM-fly ash mixture. An increase in fly ash content and a decrease in lime content promoted leaching of Ba, B and Cu whereas Zn leaching was primarily affected by the fly ash content. Numerically predicted field metal concentrations were significantly lower than the peak metal concentrations obtained in laboratory column leach tests, and field concentrations decreased with time and distance due to dispersion in soil vadose zone.  相似文献

In some recycled aggregates applications, such as component of new concrete or roads, the total content of soluble sulphates should be measured and controlled. Restrictions are usually motivated by the resistance or stability of the new structure, and in most cases, structural concerns can be remedied by the use of techniques such as sulphur-resistant cements. However, environmental risk assessment from recycling and reuse construction products is often forgotten. The purpose of this study is to analyse the content of soluble sulphate on eleven recycled aggregates and six samples prepared in laboratory by the addition of different gypsum percentages. As points of reference, two natural aggregates were tested. An analysis of the content of the leachable amount of heavy metals regulated by European regulation was included. As a result, the correlation between solubility and leachability data allow suggest a limiting gypsum amount of 4.4% on recycled aggregates. This limit satisfies EU Landfill Directive criteria, which is currently used as reference by public Spanish Government for recycled aggregates in construction works.  相似文献

Landfills generate emissions over long periods, often longer than a lifetime. The longest lasting emission is leachate. In order to estimate the future requirements for leachate treatment, different kinds of leaching tests may be applied. In this paper, shaking leaching tests (SLT), landfill-simulator leaching tests and a field-cell leaching test performed with ash, municipal solid waste (MSW) and MSW+ash are evaluated. The tests are compared and the factors influencing leaching are identified and discussed. The factors are: liquid to solid (L/S) ratio, water withdrawal, recirculation rate, presence or absence of biological processes, size of particles, duration of experiment, temperature and pre-treatment of the waste. The presence of biological processes has the greatest impact on leaching and is the main reason why SLT is less useful for long-term predictions. The landfill simulator tests were found to be useful for several different kinds of predictions. However, they are not reliable for predicting the L/S required for reaching a certain concentration. The possibilities for reliable long-term predictions would be facilitated by a better knowledge of the influence of various factors on leaching. Such an increased knowledge would make it possible to enhance waste stabilisation in leaching tests as well as in full-scale landfills.  相似文献

Construction and demolition wastes are suitable for use in road construction. However, leaching characterization of recycled materials is required to determine their pollutant potential and the consequence of their application in different scenarios. The motivation of this paper is derived from the increasing use of different leaching test methods. In Europe, the confusion resulting from the wide variety of tests used to evaluate environmental properties of construction materials implies that an evaluation of the current practices and the attempt to consolidate the approaches are required. Two equilibrium-based leaching tests (the Dutch test and the European standard) were conducted to assess the environmental impact of four recycled aggregates. Three natural limestone aggregates were used as controls. Both tests measure the potential release of hazardous elements under extreme conditions using different leaching parameters (L/S ratio, pH value and contact time). The results proved that pH is the most relevant factor on the assessment of the differences between leaching methods due to its strong control on the pollutant release. To classify the materials according to their environmental effects, the concentration limit values of the metals imposed by Council Decision 2003/33/EC were used as a reference. The comparison allowed the classification of the recycled aggregates as inert wastes, with the exception of the MR-2 aggregate, which was classified as non-hazardous material.  相似文献

This paper explores the kinetics of carbonation of cement-based solidified hazardous waste. This study is part of a wide investigation into the effects of carbonation on solidified waste forms. Two commercially produced heavy metal wastes were solidified with three different types of Portland cement and two mineral admixtures and carbonated under controlled conditions. Measurements of the uptake of carbon dioxide were made for the different mixes and areas showing the degree of carbonation for each cement system were defined. The effects of water/binder ratio, waste and binder type on both total uptake of carbon dioxide and rate of carbonation were investigated and are discussed.  相似文献

Hazardous waste incineration (HWI) in rotary kilns and the disposal of the residual slag on landfills play an important role in German waste treatment. In order to save disposal costs the elution behaviour of HWI-slag should be further optimised. Quality-improved slag may be disposed off on cheaper landfill sites still applying to landfill regulations. In a new process-integrated approach hazardous waste is mixed with limestone, which initiates chemical reactions with heavy metals in the rotary kiln yielding new compounds of different solubility. In this work HWI-slag/limestone mixtures are thermally treated and then examined by elution tests. Experimental data indicate that the heavy metals pertinent to landfill class assignment of a HWI-slag share a solubility minimum at a CaO-content of about 15%. Such improved HWI-slags are allowed to be disposed off on cheaper landfill sites. Furthermore, a new combination of thermodynamic calculation methods is applied to predict heavy metal solubility for different process conditions. Used models hold the opportunity to explain the tendencies of heavy metal leaching and propose plausible chemical reactions. With it, a new tool to examine the impact of temperature treatment and slag composition on heavy metal elution from HWI-slag is presented.  相似文献

Batch leaching tests and simulated landfill lysimeter tests were performed to evaluate the contents of heavy metals leached from spent batteries in the municipal solid waste. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure was utilized to perform the batch leaching tests of 36 spent batteries. Four lysimeters were prepared with battery contents ranging from 0% to 100% by weight for column tests, and the experiments were performed at ambient temperature. The age of all the batteries used in the study ranged from freshly disposed up to approximately 3 years old. The results from the batch tests showed that the type of battery influenced the heavy metal concentrations in the leached solutions. The lysimeter experiment results illustrated that at lower pH levels more metals are leached than at higher pH levels. The increasing amount of batteries disposed in landfills can contribute to the leaching of more metals, especially Mn and Zn, into the environment. These results indicate that the direct disposal of spent household batteries into a MSW landfill can increase the heavy metal contents in the landfill leachate.  相似文献

Organic wastes can be recycled as a source of plant nutrients, enhancing crop production by improving soil quality. However, the study of the dynamic of soil nutrient, especially the N dynamic, after soil application of any organic material is vital for assessing a correct and effective use of the material, minimizing the losses of nitrate in leachates and avoiding the negative environmental effects that it may cause in groundwater. To estimate the effect of three organic materials, a municipal solid waste compost (MWC), a non-composted paper mill sludge (PS), and an agroforest compost (AC) on the N dynamic of a sandy soil two experiments were carried out: an incubation experiment and a column experiment. The incubation experiment was conducted to estimate the N mineralization rate of the different soil-amendment mixtures. The soil was mixed with the organic amendments at a rate equivalent to 50,000 kg ha(-1) and incubated during 40 weeks at constant moisture content (70% of its water-holding capacity) and temperature (28 degrees C) under aerobic conditions. Organic amendment-soil samples showed an immobilization of N during the first weeks, which was more noticeable and longer in the case of PS-treated soil compared to the other two amendments due to its high C/N ratio. After this immobilization stage, a positive mineralization was observed for all treatment, especially in MWC treated soil. Contemporaneously a 1-year column (19 cm diameter and 60 cm height) experiment was carried out to estimate the nitrate losses from the soil amended with the same organic materials. Amendments were mixed with the top soil (0-15 cm) at a rate equivalent to 50,000 kg ha(-1). The columns were periodically irrigated simulating rainfall in the area of study, receiving in total 415 mm of water, and the water draining was collected during the experimental period and analysed for NO3-N. At the end of the experimental period NO3-N content in soil columns at three depths (0-20, 20-35 and 35-50 cm) was determined. The nitrate concentration in drainage water confirmed the results obtained in the incubation experiment: nitrate leaching was higher in soil treated with MWC due to its higher N-mineralization rate. Nevertheless, the nitrate losses represented a low amount compared with the total nitrogen added to soil. No clear signs of water-draining contamination were observed during the first year after the application of AC and PS; however, the nitrate leaching in soil treated with MWC slightly exceeded the limit allowed for the Drinking Water Directive 98/83/CE.  相似文献

This paper presents an assessment on the wastes namely slag, dust, mill scale and sludge resulting from scrap metal processing. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that there are various ways via which scrap metal processing wastes can be reused or recycled in other applications instead of simply diverting them to the landfill. These wastes are briefly described and an overview on the different areas of applications is presented. Based on the results obtained, the waste generation factor developed was 349.3 kg per ton of steel produced and it was reported that slag represents 72% of the total wastes emanating from the iron and steel industry in Mauritius. Finally the suitability of the different treatment and valorisation options in the context of Mauritius is examined.  相似文献
