In this study, the effects of cutting edge geometry, workpiece hardness, feed rate and cutting speed on surface roughness and resultant forces in the finish hard turning of AISI H13 steel were experimentally investigated. Cubic boron nitrite inserts with two distinct edge preparations and through-hardened AISI H13 steel bars were used. Four-factor (hardness, edge geometry, feed rate and cutting speed) two-level fractional experiments were conducted and statistical analysis of variance was performed. During hard turning experiments, three components of tool forces and roughness of the machined surface were measured. This study shows that the effects of workpiece hardness, cutting edge geometry, feed rate and cutting speed on surface roughness are statistically significant. The effects of two-factor interactions of the edge geometry and the workpiece hardness, the edge geometry and the feed rate, and the cutting speed and feed rate also appeared to be important. Especially honed edge geometry and lower workpiece surface hardness resulted in better surface roughness. Cutting-edge geometry, workpiece hardness and cutting speed are found to be affecting force components. The lower workpiece surface hardness and honed edge geometry resulted in lower tangential and radial forces.  相似文献

Experimental studies on the performances of both new developed environmental friendly vegetable based cutting fluids (refined sunflower and canola oils) including different percentage of extreme pressure (EP) additive and two commercial cutting fluids (semi-synthetic and mineral cutting fluids) in turning processes were reported in this work. Performances of cutting fluids were compared with respect to surface roughness, cutting and feed forces and tool wear during longitudinal turning of AISI 304L. Experimental results were also compared with dry cutting conditions. The results indicated that 8% of EP included canola based cutting fluid performed better than the rest.  相似文献

Abstract

Surface roughness is one of the most common criteria indicating the surface finish of the part, which depends on various factors including cutting parameters, geometry of the tool, and cutting fluid. One of the goals of using cutting fluids in machining processes is to achieve improved surface finish. In addition to high costs, commonly used cutting fluids cause dermal and respiratory problems to the operators as well as environmental pollution. The present article aims at investigating the effect of spray cryogenic cooling via liquid nitrogen on surface roughness and cutting ratio in turning process of AISI 304 stainless steel. Through conducting experimental tests, the effects of cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut on surface roughness and cutting ratio have been compared in dry and cryogenic turning. A total number of 72 tests have been carried out. Results show that cryogenic turning of AISI 304 stainless steel reduces surface roughness 1%–27% (13% on the average), compared to dry turning. The obtained results showed that the cutting ratio in cryogenic turning is averagely increased by 32% in comparison with dry turning, also that chip breakage is improved in cryogenic turning.  相似文献

This paper presents an investigation into the MQL (minimum quantity lubrication) and wet turning processes of AISI 1045 work material with the objective of suggesting the experimental model in order to predict the cutting force and surface roughness, to select the optimal cutting parameters, and to analyze the effects of cutting parameters on machinability. Fractional factorial design and central composite design were used for the experiment plan. Cutting force and surface roughness according to cutting parameters were measured through the external cylindrical turning based on the experiment plan. The measured data were analyzed by regression analysis and verification experiments were conducted to confirm the results. From the experimental results and regression analysis, this research project suggested the experimental equations, proposed the optimal cutting parameters, and analyzed the effects of cutting parameters on surface roughness and cutting force in the MQL and wet turning processes.  相似文献

In the present research, an attempt has been made to experimentally investigate the effects of cutting parameters on cutting forces and surface roughness in hard milling of AISI H13 steel with coated carbide tools. Based on Taguchi’s method, four-factor (cutting speed, feed, radial depth of cut, and axial depth of cut) four-level orthogonal experiments were employed. Three cutting force components and roughness of machined surface were measured, and then range analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are performed. It is found that the axial depth of cut and the feed are the two dominant factors affecting the cutting forces. The optimal cutting parameters for minimal cutting forces and surface roughness in the range of this experiment under these experimental conditions are searched. Two empirical models for cutting forces and surface roughness are established, and ANOVA indicates that a linear model best fits the variation of cutting forces while a quadratic model best describes the variation of surface roughness. Surface roughness under some cutting parameters is less than 0.25 μm, which shows that finish hard milling is an alternative to grinding process in die and mold industry.  相似文献

This study analyze the effect of machine tools, cooling lubrication environments and cutting conditions on surface roughness and cutting force, and propose the combination of cutting conditions which minimizes the effect of machine tool variables on the dispersion of cutting force and surface roughness by treating the changes in machine tool itself and the installation environments as a noise factors. To do so, the Taguchi method is used to establish an experiment plan, and flat end milling is carried out to measure cutting force and surface roughness. The research results show that in the case of cutting force, the effect of cutting conditions is dominant, and changes in machine tools and cooling lubrication environments barely have effect on cutting force. However, in the case of surface roughness, all of the cutting conditions, machine tool and cooling lubrication environment variables have impact. In order to select a combination of cutting conditions insensible to changes in machine tools, considerations for feed per revolution and axial depth of cut turn out most important in the aspect of cutting force, and considerations for feed per revolution is most important in the surface roughness.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of cutting speed, feed rate, workpiece hardness and depth of cut on surface roughness and cutting force components in the hard turning were experimentally investigated. AISI H11 steel was hardened to (40; 45 and 50) HRC, machined using cubic boron nitride (CBN 7020 from Sandvik Company) which is essentially made of 57% CBN and 35% TiCN. Four-factor (cutting speed, feed rate, hardness and depth of cut) and three-level fractional experiment designs completed with a statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed. Mathematical models for surface roughness and cutting force components were developed using the response surface methodology (RSM). Results show that the cutting force components are influenced principally by the depth of cut and workpiece hardness; on the other hand, both feed rate and workpiece hardness have statistical significance on surface roughness. Finally, the ranges for best cutting conditions are proposed for serial industrial production.  相似文献

Abstract

This study designed an automatic cutting feed adjustment system for computer numerical control (CNC) turning machine tools, which integrate the operational characteristics of cutting force control and chatter suppression control to shorten the machining time and maintain the quality of workpieces. The setting of appropriate machining conditions (such as cutting feed, spindle speed and depth of cut) to consider both machining quality and efficiency often causes difficulties for machine tool operators. Therefore, this study uses cutting force control to design an automatic cutting feed adjustment method for cutting tools, and then, the chatter suppression control design is used to modify the cutting force command to suppress cutting chatter. The experimental results of the CNC turning machine tool show that the use of the cutting force control to adjust the cutting feed can shorten the machining time; however, the cutting chatter results in larger surface waviness on the workpiece surface. When the cutting force command is properly modified by actuating the chatter suppression control, the workpiece shows better surface roughness with prolonged machining time. Therefore, the cutting tests demonstrate that the proposed system is feasible for satisfying the machining requirements of the manufacturing processes of mechanical parts for high speed and high accuracy.  相似文献

Chip type is determined by the coupled effects of workpiece material property, cutting speed, uncut chip thickness, feed rate, and tool edge geometry. The understanding of chip formation plays a critical role in studying surface integrity and optimization of machining process variables. Serrated chip, one of the major important chip type, is usually formed in hard cutting at high speed. In this study, a new analytical model has been proposed to better understand the formation of serrated chip, and the simulations have been acquired using ABAQUS/Explicit in machining AISI 1045 during different speeds (from 60 to 6000 m/min). The workpiece material property is modeled with the Johnson-Cook model, and the experiments have been conducted with AISI 1045 during speeds from 60 to 1200 m/min. It has been shown that flow stress is influenced simultaneously by the strain rate hardening and temperature softening. When the speed reaches very high, the temperature softening will fail, and the strain rate hardening will play a more important role. Also, it can be found that the hardening ratio increases when the cutting speed rises. The results of the simulations and experiments correlated well. The cutting force and thrust force both decrease as the cutting speed increases, and the difference between them will shrink when the machining speed reaches a high level.  相似文献

The chip breaker presents an important role in chip control on turning operation, as well as a significant influence on cutting force, surface integrity, wear, and tool life. In this experimental study, the grooved chip breaker, feed rate, and cutting velocity influence on cutting force and surface roughness of turning process of AISI 1045 steel were investigated through a complete factorial design and the Scott–Knott method. The multiple comparison method of Scott–Knott was used to identify which combination of the factor levels was specifically different when a source of variation was statistically significant in ANOVA. This multiple comparison method was essential to choose an optimal combination between cutting conditions and chip breaker type assuring the lowest cutting force and surface roughness levels without ambiguity. The methodology proposed was effective at achieving process improvement.  相似文献

In present work performance of coated carbide tool was investigated considering the effect of work material hardness and cutting parameters during turning of hardened AISI 4340 steel at different levels of hardness. The correlations between the cutting parameters and performance measures like cutting forces, surface roughness and tool life, were established by multiple linear regression models. The correlation coefficients found close to 0.9, showed that the developed models are reliable and could be used effectively for predicting the responses within the domain of the cutting parameters. Highly significant parameters were determined by performing an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Experimental observations show that higher cutting forces are required for machining harder work material. These cutting forces get affected mostly by depth of cut followed by feed. Cutting speed, feed and depth of cut having an interaction effect on surface roughness. Cutting speed followed by depth of cut become the most influencing factors on tool life; especially in case of harder workpiece. Optimum cutting conditions are determined using response surface methodology (RSM) and the desirability function approach. It was found that, the use of lower feed value, lower depth of cut and by limiting the cutting speed to 235 and 144 m/min; while turning 35 and 45 HRC work material, respectively, ensures minimum cutting forces, surface roughness and better tool life.  相似文献

The main of the present study is to investigate the effects of process parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut) on performance characteristics (tool life, surface roughness and cutting forces) in finish hard turning of AISI 52100 bearing steel with CBN tool. The cutting forces and surface roughness are measured at the end of useful tool life. The combined effects of the process parameters on performance characteristics are investigated using ANOVA. The composite desirability optimization technique associated with the RSM quadratic models is used as multi-objective optimization approach. The results show that feed rate and cutting speed strongly influence surface roughness and tool life. However, the depth of cut exhibits maximum influence on cutting forces. The proposed experimental and statistical approaches bring reliable methodologies to model, to optimize and to improve the hard turning process. They can be extended efficiently to study other machining processes.  相似文献

In spite of their environmental and human health problems, the cutting fluids still have been used widely in industry due to cutting fluid application can increase cutting performance in metal cutting. In this article, the effect of the cutting fluid on surface roughness in boring of AISI 1030 low carbon steel was investigated depending on BUE and chip formations and other cutting parameters, such as cutting speed, feed rate and tool nose radius. In most of boring experiments, the wet cutting did not show more preferable results than dry cutting. However, cutting fluid application with big nose radius and small feed rate improved the surface roughness up to 80%. This progress was attributed to a favorable chip formation as much as effective cooling.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of experimental work in dry turning of austenitic stainless steels (AISI 304 and AISI 316) using CVD multi-layer coated cemented carbide tools. The turning tests were conducted at four different cutting speeds (120, 150, 180 and 210 m/min) while feed rate and depth of cut were kept constant at 0.16 mm/rev and 1 mm, respectively. The cutting tools used were TiC/TiCN/TiN and TiCN/TiC/Al2O3 coated cementide carbides. The influences of cutting speed, cutting tool coating top layer and workpiece material were investigated on the machined surface roughness and the cutting forces. The worn parts of the cutting tools were also examined under scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results showed that cutting speed significantly affected the machined surface roughness values. With increasing cutting speed, the surface roughness values decreased until a minimum value is reached beyond which they increased.  相似文献

In this paper, the authors introduce the methodology of combined studies on cutting edge preparation and tool performance testing. Five main fields of research on cutting edge preparation are identified in this study of cutting edge preparation while cutting edge microgeometry consists of data associated with tool edge and rake face. Uncoated and TiN coated mixed oxide ceramics inserts have been tested concerning their microgeometry and wear resistance and there is presented a sequence of measuring to identify cutting edge preparation and properties of coating. Authors propose the sequence which considers cutting edge preparation as a factor controlling performance of cutting edge in hard turning operations. Four steps in the sequence of performance testing include measurements with effects of wear criterion and machining time. Measured results show that combined effects of both preparation and coating reduce considerably friction forces in scratch tests and there is very negligible change of microhardness of uncoated and coated ceramics. Relationships between cutting edge microgeometry and acceptable machined surface roughness which results from the sequence in tool performance testing have been identified. Finally, tool performance indices are based on units which characterize machined surface roughness, tool edge wear and forces when hard turning.  相似文献

This work investigates the cutting force and surface micro-topography in hard turning of GCr15 bearing steel. A series of experiments on hard turning of GCr15 steel with polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) tools are performed on a CNC machining center. Experimental measurements of cutting force, 3D surface micro-topography, and surface roughness of the workpiece are performed. The 3D surface micro-topography of the workpiece is discussed, and the formation mechanism of the 3D surface is analyzed. The influence of cutting speed and feed rate on cutting force and surface roughness are discussed. The 2D and 3D surface roughness parameters are compared and discussed. It is found that feed rate has greater influence on cutting force and surface roughness than cutting speed and there exists the most appropriate cutting speed under which the minimum surface roughness can be generated while a relatively small cutting force can be found. Recommendations on selecting cutting parameters of hard turning of GCr15 steel are also proposed.  相似文献

The present contribution deals with the study of the effects of cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut on the performance of machining which traditionally named “machinability”. The focus is made on the effect of the pre-cited cutting parameters on the evolution of surface roughness and cutting force components during hard turning of AISI D3 cold work tool steel with CC6050 and CC650 ceramic inserts. Also, for both ceramics a comparison of their wear evolution with time and its impact on the surface equality was proposed. The planning of experiments was based on Taguchi’s L16 orthogonal array. The analysis of variance (ANOVA), the signal-to-noise ratio and response surface methodology (RSM) were adopted. Consequently, the validity of proposed linear regression model was checked and the most important parameter affecting the surface roughness and cutting force components were determined. Furthermore, in order to determine the levels of the cutting regime that lead to minimum surface roughness and minimum machining force the relationship between cutting factors was analyzed. The results revealed that the surface quality obtained with the coated CC6050 ceramic insert is 1.6 times better than the one obtained with uncoated CC650 ceramic insert. However, the uncoated ceramic insert was useful in reducing the machining force.  相似文献
