NGN(下一代网络)采用集中控制的统一的承载网提供综合业务,解决了QoS(服务质量)、安全性和可管理问题,但这种集中管理模式部分削弱和丧失了互联网无所不在的性能,不能有效地支持以P2P为代表的互联网新应用和机-机业务.此外,NGN按服务质量和使用量收费的业务模型,不适应目前消费类宽带业务的发展,以宽带接入包月为代表的互联网运营模式强烈冲击传统电信业务模式,动摇了NGN业务模型的基础.NGN需要并行发展具有分布管理能力的下一代互联网,利用互联网作为基层承载网,在其上应用层建立重叠网支持P2P应用和提供分布式管理,面向广大消费者提供固定和移动宽带互联网业务,支持机-机的各种应用,充分发挥互联网无所不在的优势.  相似文献

Some have pointed to divides in the availability of fixed home broadband Internet access as a contributor to rural students’ lower levels of educational attainment. Based on standardized exams (SAT Suite) and a survey of rural Michigan students in grades 8–11, we find that rural students with broadband home Internet access are more interested in school and leave homework incomplete less often. However, the relationship to classroom grades (GPA) is relatively trivial. Yet, we find that students who are not dependent on a cell phone for Internet access and those with higher digital skills, especially social media skills, rank considerably higher on the SAT. Rural students with broadband Internet access are able to participate in a more diverse array of online media activities, which supports building digital skills. Any negative relationship between time spent on social media, video games, other digital media and educational outcomes is outweighed by the benefit to digital skills. However, aspects of rural culture; including the emphasis on activities such as sports, as a path to postsecondary schooling and upward, social mobility; may be stunting the positive relationship between access, digital skills, and educational aspirations. Whereas extra-curricular sports have no direct relationship to SAT performance, students who spend more time on sports receive higher grades and have higher educational aspirations than those with more digital skills. We discuss the implications for rural students’ access to human capital and how the unequal relationship between digital skills and performance in the classroom and on the SAT may perpetuate inequalities.  相似文献

In rural areas, due to the low population density and the poor familiarization with new technologies, new projects related to broadband access are less profitable. In this article a hybrid wirelessbroadband over power lines network, suitable for rural and remote areas is presented, offering smart grid applications and broadband access along a 107 km medium voltage power grid in Larissa, a rural area in central Greece. This hybrid solution exploits the ubiquitous presence of the power grid along with the adaptability and accessibility of wireless technology. Through the design and implementation of this hybrid network many aspects of BPL technology were successfully dealt with demonstrating that, in addition to enhancing the power grid performance, W-BPL technology may be considered as an alternative broadband solution in rural and/or sparsely populated areas.  相似文献

This paper examines the causal effect of household access to broadband Internet on individuals’ labour market outcomes in an Australian rural and regional context. This study uses the survey data of 391 households randomly selected from the Western Downs Region of Queensland, Australia, and employs the propensity score matching technique to make causal inferences. This study also controls selection bias issues – an aspect which has been overlooked in previous studies. This study found that the causal effect of household access to broadband Internet on individuals’ labour force outcomes is not statistically significant. This finding can add value to our knowledge of the causal relationship between broadband access and labour force participation. As the rollout of a high-speed broadband network in rural and regional Australia is currently underway, the finding can be considered a benchmark for subsequent assessment of the effects of such infrastructure development on socio-economic outcomes.  相似文献

The needs of Indian rural telecom, and the economics of currently available broadband access technologies, motivate a new system for rural broadband access, which we call WiFiRe (WiFi rural extension). The system leverages the widely available, and highly cost-reduced, WiFi chipsets. We, however, retain only the PHY from these chipsets and propose a single-channel, multisector, TDD MAC using directional antennas. The proposed WiFiRe MAC is similar to the WiMAX MAC in several respects. In this article we motivate our approach, describe the system architecture and the MAC, analyse the spatial reuse, and then, using a simple scheduler, provide an assessment of the voice and data capacity of a WiFiRe system  相似文献

As broadband access networks are relatively new in Greece, it is really difficult and involves great risk to determine the potential market for broadband services. The intent of this paper is to add to the discussion of delivering fixed broadband lines to customers in Greece taking into account regulation issues, the strategic movements of the market key players and the commonly admitted inequality of broadband access availability between urban and rural areas. In addition, using time-series analysis and examining the correlations between the number of fixed broadband lines and specific demographic factors for the past three years (mid 2006–mid 2009), an attempt to estimate empirically the forthcoming demand for broadband lines is conducted. Population’s income and effective competition are recognized as the strongest determinants of broadband development. In addition, it yields that demand for broadband will continue to have a positive trend for the years to come as people are becoming more and more familiar with new technologies, with youth being the pioneer to the use of innovative services that require broadband access.  相似文献

The use of wireless, DSL, and cable for broadband access has become increasingly prevalent in metropolitan areas. While these technologies are being successfully utilized in terms of both service quality and economics in densely populated areas, there are still vast geographic regions where broadband services are either prohibitively expensive or simply unavailable at any price. The article examines several alternatives for using 2.4 GHz 802.11b (WiFi) technology to provide fixed broadband access in rural areas consisting of towns, smaller remote communities, clusters of subscribers separated by large intercluster distances, as well as widely scattered users. Our approach is to model a network based on realistic demographics, equipment and operations costs, service revenues, and customer demand and usage, and calculate the lifecycle economics in terms of capital investment and profitability. We consider the cost benefits of several emerging technologies and architectures, including high gain antennas, dynamically steerable beamforming antennas, and multihop routing. Our results show that cost-effective affordable high-speed wireless Internet access can be provided in rural and remote areas using nontraditional and innovative approaches, bridging the so-called digital divide.  相似文献

During the last few years, users ail over the world have become more and more accustomed to the availability of broadband access. This has boosted the use of a wide variety both of established and recent multimedia applications. However, there are cases where it is too expensive for network providers to serve a community of users. This is typically the case in rural and suburban areas, where there is slow deployment (or no deployment at all) of traditional wired technologies for broadband access (e.g., cable modems, xDSL). In those cases, the most promising opportunity rests with broadband wireless access technologies, such as the IEEE 802.16, also known as WiMAX. One of the features of the MAC layer of 802.16 is that it is designed to differentiate service among traffic categories with different multimedia requirements. This article focuses on mechanisms that are available in an 802.16 system to support quality of service (QoS) and whose effectiveness is evaluated through simulation.  相似文献
