Radio Archives and Preservation in Latin America: A Preliminary Overview

This article surveys efforts at preservation and diffusion of archival radio in Latin America. The region’s largest radio archives are housed within large sound libraries in Brazil and Mexico. Mexico’s Fonoteca Nacional, for example, houses the archives of XEW/Televisa Radio, the nation’s most important radio network. In countries like Argentina and Chile, radio preservation and diffusion has been a component of efforts to document and preserve the public memory of revolution and dictatorship during the Cold War era. While much remains to be done to secure the region’s radio patrimony, Latin American radio preservation has advanced significantly in recent years.     

论信息化在智慧科技馆中的几种角色

针对未来科技馆应该如何发展、向何处发展的问题,本文提出将智慧科技馆定位为科技馆通过信息化发展而形成的某种理想形态,在技术、运营、传播和教育等不同视角下分析了科技馆面对的信息化问题以及相应的特点和趋势,以此完成对于智慧科技馆的特征化描述。研究发现,信息化在智慧科技馆中主要扮演着四种角色:启发新服务和新协作,推动教育技术进步,扩大受众的概念,融入并促进展览与教育融合。这几种角色既独立演进又相互融合,构成了面向智慧科技馆的系统性发展路径。     

Cultivation Analysis: An Overview

This essay addresses the decentering of "mass communication research" as a discursive formation by an alternative cultural discourse that challenges its dominant ideology with a return to communication as an emancipatory practice, guided by the subjective nature of theory, the centrality of human agency, and the permanent critique of social, political, and economic conditions of communication. The challenge coincides with the influence of complex modernist and postmodernist ideas related to notions of culture, ideology, and power, and the increasing relevance of the production of meaning in the study of social formations. Its success is based on the ability to reflect on the role of intellectuals vis-a-vis the instrumental rationality of an administrative or corporate discourse and to reconceptualize the relations of media, communication, and society.

In this article, Andrew Wilkins, the former publisher of bookseller+publisher magazine, provides an annual overview of the Australian book marketplace, offering statistics on the market and analysis of the key publishers, retailers and consumer habits. The second half of the article concentrates on international rights sales, an important aspect of the Australian publishing industry. This article was originally published in 2007 as part of the annual Think Australian magazine, which aims to support Australian publishers and literary agents at the Frankfurt Book Fair (see ).

This article examines the role of library pages as opposed to library shelvers. The piece draws on the author’s personal experience as a Page II at the Bertram-Woods Branch Library, part of the Shaker Heights, Ohio, Public Library System, where paging was broadened to include library functions not previously covered by the work of shelvers. This shift is a manifestation of library changes that involve new work roles for pages.
