The thermal management of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is crucial for fuel cell vehicles. This paper presents a new simulation model for the water-cooled PEMFC stacks for automotive vehicles and cooling systems. The cooling system model considers both the cooling of the stack and cooling of the compressed air through the intercooler. Theoretical analysis was carried out to calculate the heat dissipation requirements for the cooling system. The case study results show that more than 99.0% of heat dissipation requirement is for thermal management of the PEMFC stack; more than 98.5% of cooling water will be distributed to the stack cooling loop. It is also demonstrated that controlling cooling water flow rate and stack inlet cooling water temperature could effectively satisfy thermal management constraints. These thermal management constraints are differences in stack inlet and outlet cooling water temperature, stack temperature, fan power consumption, and pump power consumption.  相似文献

The number of working points and response speed are two essential characteristics of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). The improper setting of the number of working points and response speed may reduce the life of PEMFC and increase the hydrogen consumption of the vehicle. This paper explores the impact of the response speed as well as the working points of the PEMFC on the hydrogen consumption in the real-system level. In this paper a dynamic model of the PEMFC system is established and verified by experiments. The model is able to reflect the dynamic response process of PEMFC under a series different number of working points and different response speed. Based on the proposed model, the influence of working points and the response speed of PEMFC on the hydrogen consumption in the vehicle under different driving cycles is analyzed and summarized, for the first time, in the open literature. The results highlight that the hydrogen consumption will decreases in both cases that with the increase of working point number and increase of response speed. However, the reduction range of hydrogen consumption trends to smaller and may reach to an optimal level considering the trade-off between the hydrogen saving and the other costs, for example the control cost. Also, with a more complex driving cycle, the working points and response speed have a greater the impact on the hydrogen consumption in the vehicle applications.  相似文献

This work experimentally investigates the effects of the pyrolytic graphite sheets (PGS) on the performance and thermal management of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack. These PGS with the features of light weight and high thermal conductivity serve as heat spreaders in the fuel cell stack for the first time to reduce the volume and weight of cooling systems, and homogenizes the temperature in the reaction areas. A PEMFC stack with an active area of 100 cm2 and 10 cells in series is constructed and used in this research. Five PGS of thickness 0.1 mm are cut into the shape of flow channels and bound to the central five cathode gas channel plates. Four thermocouples are embedded on the cathode gas channel plates to estimate the temperature variation in the stack. It is shown that the maximum power of the stack increase more than 15% with PGS attached. PGS improve the stack performance and alleviate the flooding problem at low cathode flow rates significantly. Results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of application of PGS to the thermal management of a small-to-medium-sized fuel cell stack.  相似文献

In order to analyze the driving stability of a plug-in fuel cell vehicle (PFCV), a computer-aided simulator for PFCVs has been developed. PFCVs have been introduced around the world to achieve early commercialization of an eco-friendly and highly efficient fuel cell vehicle. The plug-in option, which allows the battery to be recharged from the electricity grid, enables a reduction in size of the fuel cell system (FCS) and an improvement of its durability. As such, the existing limitations of the fuel cell - such as its high cost, poor durability, and the insufficient hydrogen infrastructure – can be overcome. During the design phase of PFCV development, simulation-based driving stability test is necessary to determine the sizes of the electric engine of the FCS and the battery. The developed simulator is very useful for analyzing the driving stability of the PFCV with respect to the capacities of the FCS and battery. The simulation results are in fact very close to those obtained from a real system, since the estimation accuracy of PFCV component models used in this simulator, such as the fuel cell stack, battery, electric vehicle, and the other balance of plants (BOPs), are verified by the experiments, and the simulator uses the newly-proposed power distribution control logic and the pre-confirmed real driving schedule. Using these results, we can study which one will be the best in terms of driving stability.  相似文献

As one of the most promising sustainable energy technologies available today, proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) engines are becoming more and more popular in various applications, especially in transportation vehicles. However, the complexity and the severity of the vehicle operating conditions present challenges to control the temperature distribution in single cells and stack, which is an important factor influencing the performance and durability of PEMFC engines. It has been found that regulating the input and output coolant water temperature can improve the temperature distribution. Therefore, the control objective in this paper is regulating the input and output temperature of coolant water at the same time. Firstly, a coupled model of the thermal management system is established based on the physical structure of PEMFC engines. Then, in order to realize the simultaneous control of the inlet and outlet cooling water temperature of the PEMFC stack, a decoupling controller is proposed and its closed-loop stability is proved. Finally, based on the actual PEMFC engine platform, the effectiveness, accuracy and reliability of the proposed decoupling controller are tested. The experimental results show that with the proposed decoupling controller, the inlet and outlet temperatures of the PEMFC stack cooling water can be accurately controlled on-line. The temperature error range is less than 0.2 °C even under the dynamic current load conditions.  相似文献

A proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cogeneration system that provides high-quality electricity and hot water has been developed. A specially designed thermal management system together with a microcontroller embedded with appropriate control algorithm is integrated into a PEM fuel cell system. The thermal management system does not only control the fuel cell operation temperature but also recover the heat dissipated by FC stack. The dynamic behaviors of thermal and electrical characteristics are presented to verify the stability of the fuel cell cogeneration system. In addition, the reliability of the fuel cell cogeneration system is proved by one-day demonstration that deals with the daily power demand in a typical family. Finally, the effects of external loads on the efficiencies of the fuel cell cogeneration system are examined. Results reveal that the maximum system efficiency was as high as 81% when combining heat and power.  相似文献

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been considered for combined heat and power (CHP) applications, but cost reduction has remained an issue for commercialization. Among various types of PEMFC, the high-temperature (HT) PEMFC is gaining more attention due to the simplicity of the system, that will make the total system cost lower. A pumpless cooling concept is introduced to reduce the number of components of a HT PEMFC system even further and also decrease the parasitic power required for operating the system. In this concept, water is used as the coolant, and the buoyancy force caused by the density difference between vapour and liquid when operated above boiling temperate is utilized to circulate the coolant between the stack and the cooling device. In this study, the basic parameters required to design the cooling device are discussed, and the stable operation of the HT PEMFC stack in both the steady-state and during transient periods is demonstrated. It found that the pumpless cooling method provides more uniform temperature distribution within the stack, regardless of the direction of coolant flow.  相似文献

An analytic multi-dimensional dynamic model of a membrane type humidifier has been developed for the study of transient responses of the humidifier under proton exchange membrane fuel cell vehicle operating conditions. The dynamic responses of heat and mass transfer and fluid flow in a membrane humidifier are mathematically formulated and modeled with a newly developed pseudo-multi-dimensional concept. The model is used to analyze the performance of the humidifier under various operating conditions and the dynamic response of the humidifier under transient operating conditions. The simulation results show that, in the case of the water-to-gas type membrane humidifier modeled in this study, the time constant of water diffusion in the membrane is less than 1 s. Thus, the delay of the response of the humidifier induced by the vapor diffusion in the membrane is not significant in vehicle operation. However, it is also found that the dynamic behavior is mainly due to the thermal resistance and heat capacity of the membrane humidifier.  相似文献

Fuel cell performance of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) prepared from poly(tetrafluoroethylene)/Nafion/silicate (PNS) membrane and Nafion-112 membrane were investigated. Due to the low conductivity of PTFE and silicate, PNS had a higher proton resistance than Nafion-112. However, in this work we show that PNS performs better than Nafion-112 for a high current density operation with a low inlet gas humidity. As the PEMFCs were operated at with 100% RH, the results showed the maximum power density (PDmax) of PNS was: at with both H2 and O2 flow rates of 300 ml/min, and at with H2 flow rate of 360 ml/min and O2 flow rate of 600 ml/min, which were much higher than the at of Nafion-112 with both H2 and O2 flow rates of 300 ml/min. The PDmax of PNS was: , , and at as the operating temperature and inlet gas humidity were set at with 67.7% RH, with 46.8% RH, and with 33.1% RH, respectively. However, no output power was detected for Nafion-112 MEA when the cell was operated at a temperature higher than and an inlet gas humidity lower than 67.7% RH. The high PEMFC performance of PNS at high current density and low humidity is attributed to the presence of silicate in the PNS membrane, which enhances water uptake and reduces electro-osmosis water loss at a high current density.  相似文献

In a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) water management is one of the critical issues to be addressed. Although the membrane requires humidification for high proton conductivity, water in excess decreases the cell performance by flooding. In this paper an improved strategy for water management in a fuel cell operating with low water content is proposed using a parallel serpentine-baffle flow field plate (PSBFFP) design compared to the parallel serpentine flow field plate (PSFFP). The water management in a fuel cell is closely connected to the temperature control in the fuel cell and gases humidifier. The PSBFFP and the PSFFP were evaluated comparatively under three different humidity conditions and their influence on the PEMFC prototype performance was monitored by determining the current density–voltage and current density–power curves. Under low humidification conditions the PEMFC prototype presented better performance when fitted with the PSBFFP since it retains water in the flow field channels.  相似文献

The process of heat transfer within porous media is usually considered as a transport through large numbers of straight channels with uniform pore sizes. For the prediction of effective thermal conductivity of gas diffusion layer (GDL), morphological properties such as the tortuosity of channels and pore-size distribution of this porous layer should be considered. Thus in this article, novel parallel and series-parallel prediction models of effective thermal conductivity for the GDL in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) have been derived by fractal theoretical characterization of the real microstructure of GDL. The prediction of fractal parallel model for carbon paper, a basal material of the GDL, is in good agreement with the reference value supplied by Toray Inc. The prediction results from the proposed models are also reasonable because they are distributed between the upper and lower bounds. Parametric effect has been investigated by using the presented models in dimensionless formalism. It can be concluded that dimensionless effective thermal conductivity (keffkeff) has a positive correlation with effective porosity (?) or the pore-area fractal dimension (Dp) when ks/kg < 1; whereas it has a negative correlation with ? or Dp when ks/kg > 1 and with tortuous fractal dimension (Dt) whether ks/kg < 1 or not. Furthermore, these fractal models have been modified by considering the effect of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) incorporated into the pore spaces of carbon paper, and the corresponding model prediction shows that there is an increase in the effective thermal conductivity due to the filling of PTFE that has high thermal conductivity.  相似文献

Oxygen excess ratio (OER) is closely correlated with the power generation efficiency and dynamic performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system. As OER changes with varying load, it is prone to oxygen starvation and slow response to OER reference value, and great challenges to OER control technology are brought. To this end, a dual closed-loop weighted fusion control for PEMFC system is proposed. The outer loop is utilized to obtain the optimal OER reference value, and the inner loop is utilized to track the OER reference value. This inner loop combines the merits of active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) algorithm and fuzzy self-tuned PID (FSTPID) method. Simulation results reveal that the proposed approach is superior to the other three methods in reducing the overshoot, settling time and avoiding oxygen starvation issues, and also in improving several key performance indices, such as integrated absolute error, settling time, etc.  相似文献

The design and test of a 9.5 kWe proton exchange membrane fuel cell passively coupled with a 33 × 1500 F supercapacitor pack is presented. Experimental results showed that the system reduced dynamic loads on the fuel cell without the need for additional DC/DC converters. Fuel efficiency gains of approximately 5% were achieved by passive hybridisation in addition to addressing two main operational degradation mechanisms: no-load idling and rapid load cycling.  相似文献

The proton exchange membrane based on polyetheretherketone was prepared via two steps of cross-linking. The properties of the double cross-linked membrane (water uptake, proton conductivity, methanol permeability and thermal stability) have been investigated for fuel cell applications. The prepared membrane exhibited relatively high proton conductivity, 3.2 × 10−2 S cm−1 at room temperature and 5.8 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 80 °C. The second cross-linking significantly decreased the water uptake of the membrane. The performance of direct methanol fuel cell was slightly improved as compared to Nafion® 117 due to its low methanol permeability. The results indicated that the double cross-linked membrane is a promising candidate for the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, especially for the direct methanol fuel cell due to its low methanol permeability and high stability in a methanol solution.  相似文献

In this paper, the proton exchange membrane prepared by covalent-ionically cross-linking water soluble sulfonated-sulfinated poly(oxa-p-phenylene-3,3-phthalido-p-phenylene-oxa-p-phenylene-oxy-phenylene) (SsPEEK-WC) is reported. Compared with covalent cross-linked PEEK-WC membrane, this covalent-ionically cross-linked PEEK-WC membrane exhibits extremely reduced water uptake and methanol permeability, but just slightly sacrificed proton conductivity. The proton conductivity of the covalent-ionically cross-linked PEEK-WC membrane reaches to 2.1 × 10−2 S cm−1 at room temperature and 4.1 × 10−2 S cm−1 at 80 °C. The methanol permeability is 1.3 × 10−7 cm2 s−1, 10 times lower than that of Nafion® 117 membrane. The results suggest that the covalent-ionically cross-linked PEEK-WC membrane is a promising candidate for direct methanol fuel cell because of low methanol permeability and adequate proton conductivity.  相似文献

Water flooding causes severe degradation of the performance and lifetime of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this study, a novel PEMFC stack with in-built moisture coil cooling was designed and the effects of moisture coil cooling on water management in the new PEMFC stack under various operating conditions were investigated. The result showed that the performance of the PEMFC stack was significantly improved due to the moisture condensation under high current density, high operating temperature, high relative humidity and high operating pressure. The output power was increases by 21.62% (525.71 W) at 1600·mA cm−2 while the increased parasitic power was no more than 35W. Moreover, degradation of the cathode catalyst layer after 100 h operation was also reduced by using moisture coil cooling. Compared with the situation without moisture condensation, the maximum decay rate of the cathode catalyst layer thickness after 100 h operation was reduced by 13.01%. Accordingly, the novel design is valuable and can be widely used in the future design of PEMFC.  相似文献

The low cost proton exchange membrane was prepared by cross-linking water soluble sulfonated-sulfinated poly(oxa-p-phenylene-3,3-phthalido-p-phenylene-oxa-p-phenylene-oxy-phenylene) (SsPEEK-WC). The prepared cross-linked membrane became insoluble in water, and exhibited high proton conductivity, 2.9 × 10−2 S/cm at room temperature. The proton conductivity was comparable with that of Nafion® 117 membrane (6.2 × 10−2 S/cm). The methanol permeability of the cross-linked membrane was 1.6 × 10−7 cm2/s, much lower than that of Nafion® 117 membrane.  相似文献

This paper presents a model of a hybrid electric vehicle, based on a primary proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) and an auxiliary Li-ion battery, and its dynamics and overall performance. The power voltage from the fuel cell is regulated by a DC/DC converter before integrating with the Li-ion battery, which provides energy to the drive motor. The driving force for propelling the wheels comes from a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM); where the power passes through the transmission, shaft, and the differential.  相似文献

Air-breathing is known as a way to reduce the weight, volume, and the cost of PEMFCs. In this study, the thermal management of the high-powered air-breathing PEMFC stacks by applying different cathode flow channel configurations is carried out to improve the stack performance. In order to verify the thermal management results, numerical simulation is also performed. The research results show that a combination of the 50% and 58.3% opening ratios in the air-breathing stack reduces the stack temperature and enhances the temperature distribution uniformity, leading to a better and more stable stack performance. In addition, it is found that the stack performance is significantly improved under the assisted-air-breathing condition. Moreover, the simulation results and the experimental data are basically consistent. It is suggested to adopt the average temperature over the cross-sectional flow region from simulation as fitting the simulation results and the measured data.  相似文献

While the use of a high level of platinum (Pt) loading in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) can amplify the trade off towards higher performance and longer lifespan for these PEMFCs, the development of PEMFC electrocatalysts with low-Pt-loadings and high-Pt-utilization is critical and the limited supply and high cost of the Pt used in PEMFC electrocatalysts necessitate a reduction in the Pt level. In order to make such electrocatalysts commercially feasible, cost-effective and innovative, catalyst synthesis methods are needed for Pt loading reduction and performance optimization. Since a Pt-deposited carbon nanotube (CNT) shows higher performance than a commercial Pt-deposited carbon black (CB) with reducing 60% Pt load per electrode area in PEMFCs, use of CNTs in preparing electrocatalysts becomes considerable. This paper reviews the literature on the synthesis methods of carbon-supported Pt electrocatalysts for PEMFC catalyst loading reduction through the improvement of catalyst utilization and activity. The features of electroless deposition (ED) method, deposition on sonochemically treated CNTs, polyol process, electrodeposition method, sputter-deposition technique, γ-irradiation method, microemulsion method, aerosol assisted deposition (AAD) method, Pechini method, supercritical deposition technique, hydrothermal method and colloid method are discussed and characteristics of each one are considered.  相似文献
