Summary We compare the effects of parental age on several offspring life history traits in two milkweed bug populations: a typically univoltine population ofOncopeltus fasciatus from the Sacramento Valley of California and a typically multivoltine population ofO. cingulifer from Monteverde, Costa Rica. Reared under identical conditions (27°C, 12 h light: 12 h dark photoperiod), these bugs exhibit significant differences in the effects of parental age on offspring life history. As they age,O. fasciatus females from Sacramento lay clutches of eggs of decreasing average weight and a decreasing proportion of their eggs produce offspring that survive to adulthood. Those offspring which do survive have a significantly faster developmental rate and females have a larger body size at adult eclosion. AsO. cingulifer from Monteverde age, they also produce lighter eggs, but there is no significant change in the offspring developmental rate, survival or female adult body size. We suggest that these results are largely explicable as the consequence of different parental investment strategies associated with the predictable relationship between parental age and time of season inO. fasciatus but not inO. cingulifer. AsO. fasciatus from Sacramento age, they may be increasing their investment per developing offspring so as to increase the probability that nymphs hatching late in the season will reach a prereproductive adult diapause before the first killing frost.

Intraspecific variation in egg size and hatching size, and the genetic and environmental trade‐offs that contribute to variation, are the basis of the evolution of life histories. The present study examined both univariate and multivariate temperature‐mediated plasticity of life‐history traits, as well as temperature‐mediated trade‐offs in egg size and clutch size, in two planktotrophic species of marine slipper limpets, Crepidula. Previous work with two species of Crepidula with large eggs and lecithotrophic development has shown a significant effect of temperature on egg size and hatching size. To further examine the effect of temperature on egg size in Crepidula, the effects of temperature on egg size and hatching size, as well as the possible trade‐offs with other the life‐history features, were examined for two planktotrophic species: Crepidula incurva and Crepidula cf. marginalis. Field‐collected juveniles were raised at 23 or 28 °C and egg size, hatching size, capsules/brood, eggs/capsule, time to hatch, interbrood interval, and final body weight were recorded. Consistent with results for the lecithotrophic Crepidula, egg size and hatching size decreased with temperature in the planktotrophic species. The affects of maternal identity and individual brood account for more than half of the intraspecific variation in egg size and hatching size. Temperature also showed a significant effect on reproductive rate, with time to hatch and interbrood interval both decreasing with increasing temperature. However, temperature had contrasting effects on the number of offspring. Crepidula cf. marginalis has significantly more eggs/capsule and therefore more eggs per brood at 28 °C compared to 23 °C, although capsules/brood did not vary with temperature. Crepidula incurva, on the other hand, produced significantly more capsules/brood and more eggs per brood at the lower temperature, whereas the number of eggs/capsule did not vary with temperature. The phenotypic variance–covariance matrix of life‐history variables showed a greater response to temperature in C. incurva than in C. cf. marginalis, and temperature induced trade‐offs between offspring size and number differ between the species. These differences suggest that temperature changes as a result of seasonal upwelling along the coast of Panama will effect the reproduction and evolution of life histories of these two co‐occurring species differently. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, ?? , ??–??.

Laboratory and field investigations revealed that the life history traits of exephippial and parthenogenetic generations of Daphnia differ substantially. Daphniids hatching from resting eggs grow faster and their definitive body sizes are bigger than of hatchlings from subitaneous eggs. Size at maturity for exephippial animals is significantly larger. In spite of this, they mature a few days earlier than parthenogenetic females. In this study, the difference was 3–4 days for the laboratory experiments and 1–3 days for the field. Fecundity of the exephippial generation is markedly higher. Here, the clutch size for this generation was up to 3.5–4.0 times as large as for the parthenogenetic generation. Moreover, obtained results suggest that the relationship between clutch size and body length for both generations differ significantly.Estimates of the intrinsic rate of increase for field Daphnia populations demonstrated that life history traits of exephippial animals lead to a two or threefold higher rate of increase in the conditions of invertebrate predation pressure. Under moderate fish pressure, obtained r values for the daphniids hatching from resting eggs were larger than those from subitaneous. High growth rate of exephippial females is disadvantageous only under the conditions of severe pressure by fish. Obtained results suggest that hatchlings from diapausing eggs an acceleration of population increase by several times during the beginning of the development of a population with periodical re-establishment from resting eggs.

Life history traits of the phytophagous ladybird beetle Epilachna yasutomii were compared between a nonpest population feeding on wild blue cohosh and a pest population feeding on cultivated solanaceous crops, mainly potato. Newly emerged adults of the nonpest population entered diapause early in midsummer when blue cohosh withered, while adults of the pest population were found in tomato and eggplant fields until late autumn. The pest population had larger females, a higher population growth rate, a shorter larval developmental period, and reduced longevity of overwintered females, compared with the nonpest population. ANOVA indicated that all these life history traits were influenced by the food plant, and that the number of eggs laid per female and the longevity of overwintered females were also affected by the population type. These findings suggest that the life history pattern of E. yasutomii changed to high fecundity with a short life span from low fecundity with a long life span as a result of the host shift from wild blue cohosh to cultivated solanaceous crops. The current study examines the effect of photoperiod (16:08 or 12:12 h L:D) and diet (eggs of Ephestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Phycitidae) or the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) (Hemiptera: Aphididae)) on the development and reproduction of the multicoloured Asian lady beetle Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). A long-term laboratory population of H. axyridis (since 1998) and a melanic and non-melanic population originating from field collected individuals of H. axyridis in Belgium were used in this study. Long day conditions (16 h photoperiod) shortened development of the field populations with 2–3 days when compared with short day conditions (12 h photoperiod). Oviposition in the field populations was delayed by 1–3 months when reared at a 12 h photoperiod. Dissections indicated that the females were in reproductive diapause. As compared with live pea aphids, a diet consisting of E. kuehniella eggs yielded heavier adult body weights (up to 12%) and increased the number of egg laying days (by 45–169%) for both field populations at a 16 h photoperiod and lengthened adult life span (by 45–92%) under both light regimens. The morph types differed in their response to the foods offered in terms of developmental rate, pre-oviposition period and number of oviposition days. The laboratory and field strains responded differentially to regimens of food and photoperiod. The study indicated a greater nutritional plasticity of the non-melanic morphs which may offer them a competitive advantage that may in part explain the predominance of non-melanic morphs in newly colonized areas.

To understand how selection shapes life-history traits, we need information on the manner in which offspring phenotypes influence fitness. Life-history allocation models typically assume that “bigger offspring are better”, but field data paint a more complex picture: larger offspring size sometimes enhances fitness, and sometimes not. Additionally, higher survival and faster growth of larger offspring might be due to indirect maternal effects (e.g., mothers allocate hormones or nutrients differently to different-sized eggs), and not to offspring size per se. Alternative factors, such as seasonal timing of hatching, may be more important. We examined these issues using 419 eggs from captive jacky dragon lizards (Amphibolurus muricatus). The mothers were maintained under standardized conditions to minimize variance in thermal and nutritional history, and the eggs were incubated under controlled conditions to minimize variance in offspring phenotypes due to incubation temperature and moisture. We reduced the size of half the eggs (and, thus, the size of the resultant hatchlings) from each clutch by yolk extraction. The hatchlings were marked and released at a field site over a 3-month period, with regular recapture surveys to measure growth and survival under natural conditions. Growth rates and survival were strongly enhanced by early-season hatching, but were not affected by hatchling body size.

In an analysis of a life table experiment involving positively, intermediately and negatively phototactic Daphnia magna clones, life history traits such as the average duration of the adult instar, neonate and adult body size were found to be correlated with phototactic behaviour. The size of the eggs and neonates was positively correlated with adult body size, and with egg development time. Adult body size was positively correlated with the size of the second and subsequent clutches. I argue that the intrinsic positive correlation between offspring size and egg development time is a key factor structuring the differences in life history patterns observed between the positively and intermediately phototactic Daphnia genotypes, and that the two life history patterns are to be considered alternatives suited for different environmental conditions (e.g. habitats with and without strong predation pressure on adults).

Reviews of hatching asynchrony in birds recommended more studies on intraspecific variation in the extent of hatching asynchrony. We examined intraspecific variation in clutch size, laying chronology, onset of incubation, incubation period, and hatching asynchrony in burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia) in the Imperial Valley of California. Mean clutch size was 7.4 eggs and owls averaged 0.5 eggs laid per day. Females varied considerably in laying interval and onset of incubation (range?=?1st to 9th egg in the clutch). The mean incubation period was 21.9?days. Hatching interval also varied greatly among females ( $ \overline{x} $ ?=?0.8, range 0.1–2.0?days between successively hatched eggs). Past burrowing owl studies have largely overlooked the substantial intraspecific variation in these traits or have reported estimates that differ from ours. Future studies designed to identify the environmental factors that explain the large intraspecific variation in these traits will likely provide insights into the constraints on local abundance.

The timing of oviposition and hatching of Ixodes pacificus was investigated in the field and at constant temperatures in the laboratory. Replete females held at temperatures between 9 and 29°C began depositing eggs a mean of 9–70 days after drop off. Egg masses held between 12 and 25°C commenced hatching 25–178 days after the onset of oviposition. Eggs held at 9 or 29°C did not hatch. The lower temperature thresholds for development (LTD) for oviposition and hatching were 6.5 and 9°C, respectively. The number of degree days required for oviposition and hatching was 173 and 588, respectively. Replete females placed in the field on 2 December through to 8 March deposited eggs from 2 February through to 24 April; the eggs commenced hatching between 2 July and 21 August. Unfed larvae from two of 20 egg masses survived through the winter and fed readily when exposed to deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) on 22 April. Replete larvae were returned to the field and moulted between 9 and 21 August. Larvae exposed to deer mice in August, 4 weeks after hatching, also fed readily. Although further studies are needed to clarify the timing of nymphal development, the present study suggests that I. pacificus requires more than 1 year to complete its life cycle.

This study combined morphological and morphometric information on egg clutches, egg capsules and paralarvae of two sympatric coastal octopuses from New Zealand waters, Octopus huttoni and Pinnoctopus cordiformis, to provide species-specific traits to identify their early life stages obtained from field surveys. Eggs of O. huttoni (2.5 mm length; 1 mm width) were entwined with one another forming strings that ranged from 11 to 25.8 mm in length. Eggs of P. cordiformis (6.4 mm length; 1.5 mm width) were significantly bigger than those of O. huttoni and were grouped in small clusters of about seven eggs. Paralarvae O. huttoni and P. cordiformis differed in hatching size (1.4 mm versus 3.1 mm mantle length), number of suckers per arm (four versus eight), number of lamellae per outer demibranch (five versus ten) and arrangements of chromatophores in the body surface (29 to 59 versus 91 to 179), respectively. The morphological traits described in hatchlings from the laboratory allowed comparisons with field-collected paralarvae, suggesting that such characters were reliable species-specific patterns to enable a consistent differentiation between the early life stages of these two sympatric species, even in the absence of the brooding female.

Weekly observations ofNeomysis intermedia in Lake Kasumigaura showed two major peaks in abundance during spring and autumn (more than 104 individuals m–2) and minimum levels in summer and winter (less than 103 individuals m–2). Their increase in abundance followed a high egg ratio, suggesting that the increase in abundance was caused by a high reproductive rate. Major contributors to mysid population decreases include fish predation and commercial fisheries, and possible horizontal migration of the mysids. N. intermedia showed two types of life history in the lake. One type (overwintering generation) has a life span of about 6–7 months and produces about 27 eggs per brood. Another, appearing from spring to autumn, matures in 3–6 weeks at a smaller size, and produces 12 eggs per brood. The reproductive season ofN. intermedia was continuous from March through November.

Inbreeding depression has been reported in various groups of organisms, including insects. Estimates of inbreeding consequences were obtained by comparing 12 life‐history and morphological traits among nine inbred families (F = 0.25) and 16 outbred families (F = 0) of the Neotropical butterfly Heliconius erato phyllis. A Student's t‐test showed statistically significant differences for pupal weight and right forewing area, both in males and in females, between inbred and outbred families. Survival during development, from egg hatching to adulthood, also differed significantly between inbred and outbred families. The average number of haploid lethal equivalents was 0.17 for pupal weight, 0.15 for forewing area and 0.71 for survival from hatching to adulthood. The results of this study confirm that the consequences of inbreeding are more deleterious to life history traits than to morphological ones.

Epidemiological studies were conducted in the Lake Langano area in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia to determine the occurrence of schistosomiasis and assess factors involved in its transmission. Microscopic examination of faecal specimens from free ranging Papio anubis (anubis baboon) troops from Bishan Gari and Burka Dita forest reserves revealed Schistosoma mansoni eggs with a prevalence of 12.1% (11/91) and 26.2%(34/130), respectively. The eggs were viable as confirmed by miracidial hatching and infectivity tests. Out of the total 12 communities (three schools, five villages and one herdsmen community) surveyed for schistosomiasis around Lake Langano, individuals excreting S. mansoni eggs were found in nine communities with prevalence of infection ranging from 1.4 to 43%. The intensity of infection ranged from 24 EPG (eggs per gram of faeces) to 243 EPG. Excretion of viable eggs by the baboons indicate that they play a role in maintenance of S. mansoni infection in the locality. The detection of S. mansoni eggs in young children, collection of cercarial-infected Biomphalaria pfeifferi in water bodies, and establishment of S. mansoni infection in lab-bred mice have confirmed establishment of transmission foci in Kime area, south-east of Lake Langano. However, the lake itself does not seem to support transmission of schistosomiasis since no snails were found along the shore of the Lake. Further investigations are indicated to fully elucidate the role baboons play in the epidemiology of schistosomiasis in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia. The risk of introduction of water-based development projects in these new endemic foci in relation to S. mansoni infection in the baboons is discussed.

The adaptive response of organisms to unpredictable environments is increasingly recognized as a central topic in fundamental and applied evolutionary ecology. Selection due to environmental unpredictability can act on multiple traits of an organism's life cycle to reduce the impact of high environmental variance. The aim of this research was to study how unpredictability selects for diapause traits: 1) the timing of sex (a proxy of the timing of diapausing egg production), and 2) the diapausing egg hatching fraction (a proxy of diapause duration). We used an experimental evolution approach with the facultative sexual rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Laboratory populations experiencing two contrasting regimes of environmental fluctuation (predictable versus unpredictable) evolved divergently over a short time span (< 77 days). The populations under the unpredictable regime showed an earlier initiation of sexual reproduction and a lower hatching fraction of diapausing eggs than populations under the predictable regime. These findings demonstrate empirically the existence of bet‐hedging strategies in B. plicatilis regarding both traits, consistent with theoretical predictions of bet‐hedging evolution under conditions of unpredictable environmental variance. Given that scenarios of increased environmental variability are expected to occur in the near future, a comprehensive understanding of the role of bet‐hedging strategies is necessary for predicting population responses to environmental change.

We estimated broad‐sense heritabilities (H2) of 13 female and seven male life‐history traits of the Glanville fritillary butterfly (Melitaea cinxia) under semi‐natural conditions in a large outdoor population cage. The analysis was based on full‐sib families collected as young larvae in the field and reared under common garden conditions. We found significant genetic variance in female lifespan, fecundity, number of matings and host‐plant preference as well as in male body mass and mobility. Apart from host‐plant preference, female traits that were more strongly correlated with lifetime reproductive success (LRS; measured as total number of eggs laid) had higher H2. LRS itself exhibited significant heritability. Host‐plant preference had very high H2, consistent with a previously reported genetically determined geographical cline in host‐plant preference in the study area. Lifespan and egg hatching rate were significantly associated with a SNP in the coding region of the Pgi gene, for which there is previous evidence for balancing selection. Selection on Pgi, which furthermore shows spatial and temporal variation, may maintain genetic variance in fitness‐related life‐history traits. In contrast, we found no strong evidence for life‐history trade‐offs.

Life history parameters of Diaphanosoma excisum (SARS) were derived from culture tube experiments with media comprising mohua oil cake, mustard oil cake, cow dung and rice bran. Body length, longevity, fecundity and progeny production were highest in rice bran medium. First reproduction time (A) in different media ranged from 2 to 6 days, while the reproduction peak (T) varied from 4 to 13 days. The total offspring per female (S) was directly dependent upon the mean number of eggs per female per life span. The intrinsic (r) and finite rate (er) of natural increase were larger for rice bran than for other media.

Reproductive traits of Triops granarius females were examined. Fertilization by males was a prerequisite for oviposition. Clutch size ranged from 1 to 154, and clutch frequency (per 24 hours) from 1 to 9. Clutch size generally increased with increasing body size and increasing age. Total reproductive output was dependent upon life span, and estimated at around 200 eggs for a life span of 25 days. Clutch data indicate that T. granarius may have r-selected traits.

This study indicated that the life‐history traits of European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena are apparently better suited to their environmental conditions compared to the more physically restricted life‐history traits of the yellow‐mouth barracuda Sphyraena viridensis, which co‐habit the north‐western Mediterranean Sea. The latter thermophilic species has a considerably higher reproductive potential as it invests its energy reserves in larger numbers of hydrated eggs per spawning batch. This would favour its population growth rates within the study area, especially if sea warming continues, in which case it is likely that the spawning phenology of this species would give it an advantage.

Growth and reproduction were studied in the laboratory in a cross-designed experimental set-up in four Daphnia galeata subpopulations collected from different locations (with respect to water characteristics) in a reservoir (epilimnion, metalimnion and hypolimnion in the deepest part of the reservoir near the dam and epilimnion of the upstream part of the reservoir) and in a laboratory clone of the same species. The results of two-way ANOVA revealed significant effects of the two parameters manipulated – source of water used for cultures and Daphnia subpopulation – on the life history characteristics of growth and reproduction. The water from the upstream part of the reservoir was the most favourable culture medium for all characteristics of the Daphnia groups studied (the largest primiparae, clutches and eggs, the shortest postembryonic development time and filtering setae). The poorest performances were recorded in the downstream, epilimnetic and metalimnetic waters. The primiparae in the hypolimnetic water were smaller but had relatively larger clutches of smaller eggs and slightly longer postembryonic development times. The Daphnia subpopulation originating from the hypolimnion had the smallest primiparae, the largest clutches, the smallest eggs and the shortest postembryonic development, whereas the opposite was found in animals from the epilmnion. These differences in ecologically relevant traits were supported by analysis of the quasi-neutral genetic markers that indicated significant site-dependent differences in clonal structure between the subpopulations. There was no consistent trend to higher within-group variance in the life history traits in the genetically heterogeneous subpopulations from the reservoir compared to the laboratory clone.
