In a recent Letter, Litvinenko, Forbes, and Priest (1996) claimed that the rate of the very fast flux-pile up reconnection is severely limited by the effects of plasma pressure. They considered however only two-dimensional, zero-vorticity flows. Here we show that this limitation is a feature of these restrictive assumptions and can be removed by relaxing either of them.  相似文献

Magnetic reconnection causes the local non-linear decay of an infinitely thin current sheet, i.e., a tangential discontinuity, into large amplitude magnetohydrodynamic waves. This decay process propagates along the initial current sheet and induces linear wave perturbations in the surroundings. The Greens function for the self-consistent linear compressible plane wave problem is constructed and it is shown how to perform the convolution with some source function in form of a local reconnection pulse in an efficient way.  相似文献

Magnetic field annihilation in resistive viscous incompressible plasmas is analyzed. Anisotropic viscous transport is modeled by the dominant terms in the Braginskii viscous stress tensor. An analytical solution for steady-state magnetic merging, driven by vortical plasma flows in two dimensions, is derived. Resistive and viscous energy dissipation rates are calculated. It is shown that, except in the limiting case of zero vorticity, viscous heating can significantly exceed Joule heating at the merging site. The results strongly suggest that viscous dissipation can provide a significant fraction of the total energy release in solar flares, which may have far-reaching implications for flare models.  相似文献

The problem of the plasma pressure limitations on the rapidity of flux pile-up magnetic reconnection is re-examined, following the claim made by Jardine and Allen (1998) that the limitations can be removed by relaxing the assumption of zero-vorticity two-dimensional plasma flows. It is shown that for a two-dimensional stagnation point flow with nonzero vorticity the magnetic merging rate cannot exceed the Sweet–Parker scaling in a low-beta plasma. The pressure limitation appears to be much less restrictive for weak three-dimensional flux pile-up, provided the perturbation length scale in the third dimension is much less than the global length scale. The actual reconnection rate in the latter case, however, is much lower than this upper estimate unless the current sheet width is also much less than the global scale.  相似文献

The oscillatory modes of a magnetically twisted compressible flux tube embedded in a compressible magnetic environment are investigated in cylindrical geometry. Solutions to the governing equations to linear wave perturbations are derived in terms of Whittaker’s functions. A general dispersion equation is obtained in terms of Kummer’s functions for the approximation of weak and uniform internal twist, which is a good initial working model for flux tubes in solar applications. The sausage, kink and fluting modes are examined by means of the derived exact dispersion equation. The solutions of this general dispersion equation are found numerically under plasma conditions representative of the solar photosphere and corona. Solutions for the phase speed of the allowed eigenmodes are obtained for a range of wavenumbers and varying magnetic twist. Our results generalise previous classical and widely applied studies of MHD waves and oscillations in magnetic loops without a magnetic twist. Potential applications to solar magneto-seismology are discussed.  相似文献

Zipper reconnection has been proposed as a mechanism for creating most of the twist in the flux tubes that are present prior to eruptive flares and coronal mass ejections. We have conducted a first numerical experiment on this new regime of reconnection, where two initially untwisted parallel flux tubes are sheared and reconnected to form a large flux rope. We describe the properties of this experiment, including the linkage of magnetic flux between concentrated flux sources at the base of the simulation, the twist of the newly formed flux rope, and the conversion of mutual magnetic helicity in the sheared pre-reconnection state into the self-helicity of the newly formed flux rope.  相似文献

Oscillations of magnetic flux tubes are of great importance as they contain information about the geometry and fine structure of the flux tubes. Here we derive and analytically solve in terms of Kummer’s functions the linear governing equations of wave propagation for sausage surface and body modes (m=0) of a magnetically twisted compressible flux tube embedded in a compressible uniformly magnetized plasma environment in cylindrical geometry. A general dispersion relation is obtained for such flux tubes. Numerical solutions for the phase velocity are obtained for a wide range of wavenumbers and for varying magnetic twist. The effect of magnetic twist on the period of oscillations of sausage surface modes for different values of the wavenumber and vertical magnetic field strength is calculated for representative photospheric and coronal conditions. These results generalize and extend previous studies of MHD waves obtained for incompressible or for compressible but nontwisted flux tubes. It is found that magnetic twist may change the period of sausage surface waves of the order of a few percent when compared to counterparts in straight nontwisted flux tubes. This information will be most relevant when high-resolution observations are used for diagnostic exploration of MHD wave guides in analogy to solar-interior studies by means of global eigenoscillations in helioseismology.  相似文献

With the data from WIND satellite in 1995—2005, the small-scale magnetic ?ux tubes determined with two methods, i.e., the arti?cial recognition and program selection respectively, are compared. It is found that there are magnetic reconnections in the boundary layers of 41% small-scale magnetic ?ux tubes determined with the program selection method, which is similar to the re- sult of small-scale magnetic ?ux tubes determined with the method of arti?cial recognition. The features of magnetic reconnections, such as the magnetic shear angle, magnetic ?eld strength, and duration of the dissipation region of recon- nection at the small-scale ?ux tubes’ boundaries determined from both methods have the same statistical tendency. This shows that there is no essential differ- ence in the properties of reconnections in the boundary layers of the small-scale magnetic ?ux tubes determined with the two methods. Hence the data yielded by both methods can be used as the samples for statistically studying the events of reconnection in the front and back boundary layers of small-scale ?ux ropes. There are totally 71 magnetic reconnection events selected in this paper. Our statistical result shows that in 50 events (70%) the decrease of magnetic ?eld strength in the dissipation region of reconnection is larger than 20%, and in 47 events (66%) the magnetic shear angle is larger than 90 degrees. These indicate that the magnetic reconnections in boundaries of the small-scale magnetic ?ux tubes are more likely to be anti-parallel. The statistics has been performed sep- arately in the reconnections of the front and back boundary layers of small-scale magnetic ?ux tubes. The results show that the features of reconnections in the front and back boundaries are similar to each other, which is different from the various properties in the front and back boundaries of the magnetic clouds, and this means that the expansion in the large-scale magnetic ?ux tubes, such as magnetic clouds, does not happen in the small-scale magnetic ?ux tubes.  相似文献

We report on a new method to compute the flare reconnection (RC) flux from post-eruption arcades (PEAs) and the underlying photospheric magnetic fields. In previous works, the RC flux has been computed using the cumulative flare ribbon area. Here we obtain the RC flux as the flux in half of the area underlying the PEA in EUV imaged after the flare maximum. We apply this method to a set of 21 eruptions that originated near the solar disk center in Solar Cycle 23. We find that the RC flux from the arcade method (\(\Phi_{\mathrm{rA}}\)) has excellent agreement with the flux from the flare-ribbon method (\(\Phi_{\mathrm{rR}}\)) according to \(\Phi_{\mathrm{rA}} = 1.24(\Phi_{\mathrm{rR}})^{0.99}\). We also find \(\Phi_{\mathrm{rA}}\) to be correlated with the poloidal flux (\(\Phi_{\mathrm{P}}\)) of the associated magnetic cloud at 1 AU: \(\Phi_{\mathrm{P}} = 1.20(\Phi_{\mathrm{rA}})^{0.85}\). This relation is nearly identical to that obtained by Qiu et al. (Astrophys. J. 659, 758, 2007) using a set of only 9 eruptions. Our result supports the idea that flare reconnection results in the formation of the flux rope and PEA as a common process.  相似文献

A local current sheet and a subsequent small interplanetary magnetic-flux rope were observed on 1 April 2003 by Wind and the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE). A Petschek reconnection-like exhaust crossing of the local current sheet was identified using the Walén test. The Wind spacecraft re-entered the reconnection exhaust after the main exhaust encounter, and the reentry may be due to a spatial fold of the current-sheet surface itself. The absence of parallel strahls and the presence of antiparallel strahls on either side of the current sheet suggest that the magnetic-field lines before the exhaust and in the subsequent small flux rope are all open. The \(180^{\circ}\) pitch-angle strahls were clearly absent, and halo-suprathermal electron pitch-angle distributions were observed in the exhaust. This finding means that the open field lines of the magnetic-flux rope were reconnecting to the adjacent open field lines to produce U-shaped field lines disconnected from the Sun. These observations provide direct evidence that the magnetic fields of the interplanetary small magnetic-flux rope were disconnecting from the Sun through magnetic reconnection. This type of disconnected event potentially has important implications for the magnetic-flux budget of the heliosphere.  相似文献

Simulations of the XMM EPIC instruments are presented. They suggest the correct operating mode must be chosen to ensure that spectral analysis of the data is not compromised by pile-up effects. The performanceis contrasted with the CHANDRA AXAF CCD Imaging Spectrometer, showing how the higher effective area but better over-sampling of its mirror response function in XMM, impacts this pile-up criteria. Targetsexceeding a flux of a few 10-12 ergs cm-2 s-1 will becompromised for spectral analysis in these CCD instruments, unlesscare is taken in defining correct instrument configurations. Somesimple methods of mitigating the effects are described, but this featureof X-ray pile-up warrants careful attention in calibration.  相似文献

Using time dependent MHD simulations, we study the nature of three-dimensional magnetic reconnection in thin quasi-separatrix layers (QSLs), in the absence of null points. This process is believed to take place in the solar atmosphere, in many solar flares and possibly in coronal heating. We consider magnetic field configurations which have previously been weakly stressed by asymmetric line-tied twisting motions and whose potential fields already possessed thin QSLs. When the line-tied driving is suppressed, magnetic reconnection is solely due to the self-pinching and dissipation of narrow current layers previously formed along the QSLs. A generic property of this reconnection process is the continuous slippage of magnetic field lines along each other, while they pass through the current layers. This is contrary to standard null point reconnection, in which field lines clearly reconnect by pair and abruptly exchange their connectivities. For sufficiently thin QSLs and high resistivities, the field line footpoints slip-run at super-Alfvénic speeds along the intersection of the QSLs with the line-tied boundary, even though the plasma velocity and resistivity are there fixed to zero. The slip-running velocities of a given footpoint have a well-defined maximum when the field line crosses the thinnest regions of the QSLs. QSLs can then physically behave as true separatrices on MHD time scales, since magnetic field lines can change their connections on time scales far shorter than the travel-time of Alfvén waves along them. Since particles accelerated in the diffusive regions travel along the field much faster than the Alfvén speed, slip-running reconnection may also naturally account for the fast motion of hard X-ray sources along chromospheric ribbons, as observed during solar flares. Solar flare energy release mechanisms often neglect the role played by viscous effects. Here we perform incompressible planar reconnection simulations, driven by the Orszag–Tang vortex, for both classical and Braginskii forms of the viscosity. We show that strongly driven “saturated” flux pile-up current layers, which lead to weak reconnection rates at small resistivities, are accompanied by invariant global viscous losses. These results support the notion that viscous dissipation in flaring plasmas can account for a significant fraction of the flare energy release.  相似文献

Space observations of solar flares such as those from Yohkoh, SOHO, TRACE, and RHESSI have revealed a lot of observational evidence of magnetic reconnection in solar flares: cusp-shaped arcades, reconnection inflows, plasmoids, etc. Thus it has been established, at least phenomenologically, that magnetic reconnection does occur in solar flares. However, a number of fundamental questions and puzzles still remain in the physics of reconnection in solar flares. In this paper, we discuss the recent progresses and future prospects in the study of magnetic reconnection in solar flares from both theoretical and observational points of view.  相似文献

In this paper we present a new class of exact reconnection solutions in cylindrical geometry. We point out that in the case of planar reconnection there is a natural cylindrical analog to the Cartesian Dawson function model for the magnetic field. Although the resistive energy release scalings of these solutions mimic the Cartesian models an important new feature is the presence of curvature in the current sheet. We go on to show that these solutions can be generalized to three dimensions.
