In this paper, we enumerate all number fields of degree of discriminant smaller than in absolute value containing a quintic field having one real place. For each one of the (resp. found fields of signature (resp. the field discriminant, the quintic field discriminant, a polynomial defining the relative quadratic extension, the corresponding relative discriminant, the corresponding polynomial over , and the Galois group of the Galois closure are given.

We develop an efficient technique for computing values at of Hecke -functions. We apply this technique to the computation of relative class numbers of non-abelian CM-fields which are abelian extensions of some totally real subfield . We note that the smaller the degree of the more efficient our technique is. In particular, our technique is very efficient whenever instead of simply choosing (the maximal totally real subfield of ) we can choose real quadratic. We finally give examples of computations of relative class numbers of several dihedral CM-fields of large degrees and of several quaternion octic CM-fields with large discriminants.

Let denote the double cover of corresponding to the element in where transpositions lift to elements of order and the product of two disjoint transpositions to elements of order . Given an elliptic curve , let denote its -torsion points. Under some conditions on elements in correspond to Galois extensions of with Galois group (isomorphic to) . In this work we give an interpretation of the addition law on such fields, and prove that the obstruction for having a Galois extension with gives a homomorphism . As a corollary we can prove (if has conductor divisible by few primes and high rank) the existence of -dimensional representations of the absolute Galois group of attached to and use them in some examples to construct modular forms mapping via the Shimura map to (the modular form of weight attached to) .

We consider solutions of a system of refinement equations written in the form

where the vector of functions is in and is a finitely supported sequence of matrices called the refinement mask. Associated with the mask is a linear operator defined on by . This paper is concerned with the convergence of the subdivision scheme associated with , i.e., the convergence of the sequence in the -norm.

Our main result characterizes the convergence of a subdivision scheme associated with the mask in terms of the joint spectral radius of two finite matrices derived from the mask. Along the way, properties of the joint spectral radius and its relation to the subdivision scheme are discussed. In particular, the -convergence of the subdivision scheme is characterized in terms of the spectral radius of the transition operator restricted to a certain invariant subspace. We analyze convergence of the subdivision scheme explicitly for several interesting classes of vector refinement equations.

Finally, the theory of vector subdivision schemes is used to characterize orthonormality of multiple refinable functions. This leads us to construct a class of continuous orthogonal double wavelets with symmetry.

Following his work, we present an algorithm for the computation of generating polynomials for all extensions of a given degree and discriminant.

Davenport and Heilbronn defined a bijection between classes of binary cubic forms and classes of cubic fields, which has been used to tabulate the latter. We give a simpler proof of their theorem then analyze and improve the table-building algorithm. It computes the multiplicities of the general cubic discriminants (real or imaginary) up to in time and space , or more generally in time and space for a freely chosen positive . A variant computes the -ranks of all quadratic fields of discriminant up to with the same time complexity, but using only units of storage. As an application we obtain the first real quadratic fields with , and prove that is the smallest imaginary quadratic field with -rank equal to .

Given a complex matrix , we consider the decomposition , where is upper triangular and and have orthonormal columns. Special instances of this decomposition include the singular value decomposition (SVD) and the Schur decomposition where is an upper triangular matrix with the eigenvalues of on the diagonal. We show that any diagonal for can be achieved that satisfies Weyl's multiplicative majorization conditions:

where is the rank of , is the -th largest singular value of , and is the -th largest (in magnitude) diagonal element of . Given a vector which satisfies Weyl's conditions, we call the decomposition , where is upper triangular with prescribed diagonal , the generalized triangular decomposition (GTD). A direct (nonrecursive) algorithm is developed for computing the GTD. This algorithm starts with the SVD and applies a series of permutations and Givens rotations to obtain the GTD. The numerical stability of the GTD update step is established. The GTD can be used to optimize the power utilization of a communication channel, while taking into account quality of service requirements for subchannels. Another application of the GTD is to inverse eigenvalue problems where the goal is to construct matrices with prescribed eigenvalues and singular values.

Gauss periods have been used successfully as a tool for constructing normal bases in finite fields. Starting from a primitive th root of unity, one obtains under certain conditions a normal basis for over , where is a prime and for some integer . We generalize this construction by allowing arbitrary integers with , and find in many cases smaller values of than is possible with the previously known approach.

Let be a prime congruent to 1 modulo 4, and let be rational integers such that is the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field . The Ankeny-Artin-Chowla conjecture (AAC conjecture) asserts that will not divide . This is equivalent to the assertion that will not divide , where denotes the th Bernoulli number. Although first published in 1952, this conjecture still remains unproved today. Indeed, it appears to be most difficult to prove. Even testing the conjecture can be quite challenging because of the size of the numbers ; for example, when , then both and exceed . In 1988 the AAC conjecture was verified by computer for all . In this paper we describe a new technique for testing the AAC conjecture and we provide some results of a computer run of the method for all primes up to .

An analysis of the Rayleigh-Ritz method for approximating eigenspaces   总被引:9,自引:0,他引:9  

This paper concerns the Rayleigh-Ritz method for computing an approximation to an eigenspace of a general matrix from a subspace that contains an approximation to . The method produces a pair that purports to approximate a pair , where is a basis for and . In this paper we consider the convergence of as the sine of the angle between and approaches zero. It is shown that under a natural hypothesis--called the uniform separation condition--the Ritz pairs converge to the eigenpair . When one is concerned with eigenvalues and eigenvectors, one can compute certain refined Ritz vectors whose convergence is guaranteed, even when the uniform separation condition is not satisfied. An attractive feature of the analysis is that it does not assume that has distinct eigenvalues or is diagonalizable.

We present a new algorithm for computing the centre of the Galois group of a given polynomial along with its action on the set of roots of , without previously computing the group. We show that every element in the centre is representable by a family of polynomials in . For computing such polynomials, we use quadratic Newton-lifting and truncated expressions of the roots of over a -adic number field. As an application we give a method for deciding the nilpotency of the Galois group. If is irreducible with nilpotent Galois group, an algorithm for computing it is proposed.

In this paper we define the parameterized integer relation construction algorithm PSLQ, where the parameter can be freely chosen in a certain interval. Beginning with an arbitrary vector , iterations of PSLQ will produce lower bounds on the norm of any possible relation for . Thus PSLQ can be used to prove that there are no relations for of norm less than a given size. Let be the smallest norm of any relation for . For the real and complex case and each fixed parameter in a certain interval, we prove that PSLQ constructs a relation in less than iterations.

Smyth compute the greatest lower bound of the absolute Mahler measure ( of , for belonging to nine subintervals of . In this paper, we improve the result to thirteen subintervals of and extend some existing subintervals.
