Has Dynamic Testing Lived Up to Its Potential? A Review of Sternberg and Grigorenko's Dynamic Testing.

Reviews the book "Dynamic Testing: The Nature and Measurement of Learning Potential," by R. J. Sternberg and E. L. Grigorenko (see record 2002-01422-000). Unlike "static" tests, dynamic tests emphasize learning potential rather than past learning accomplishments. The book opens with a theoretical framework of abilities as forms of development expertise. It continues with an introduction to dynamic testing and then a capsule history of dynamic testing. The book also reviews other diverse approaches to dynamic testing. The authors present their own three-pronged approach to dynamic testing along with two case studies from their own research in which dynamic testing was utilized. The book is valuable for school psychologists interested in understanding more about dynamic testing of abilities and the progress in the field. Antidote to test weariness.

Comments briefly on a letter decrying employment testing. The present author opines that if testing is worth its salt it must benefit both parties. Ideally, this benefit should be equal. The right tests, intelligently administered and carefully interpreted, can help pick the right man for the right job, prevent a good man from being chosen for the wrong job, and an unqualified man from being placed in a job responsibility that is not right for him--emphasis on "help." Because testing procedures have been misused so often and because so many candidates are skeptical, I have long advocated the following as standard practice: When testing is first mentioned in connection with an open position, a simple statement should be made to the candidate making clear that the procedure will benefit him as much as it benefits the company, that the test results will be used as a guide and not be given "make or break" value. The candidate should then be assured that arrangements will be made, at his option and at a mutually convenient time--and always at the employer's expense-- for him to discuss his test results with a qualified person. The Positive and Negative Consequences of Multiple-Choice Testing.

Multiple-choice tests are commonly used in educational settings but with unknown effects on students' knowledge. The authors examined the consequences of taking a multiple-choice test on a later general knowledge test in which students were warned not to guess. A large positive testing effect was obtained: Prior testing of facts aided final cued-recall performance. However, prior testing also had negative consequences. Prior reading of a greater number of multiple-choice lures decreased the positive testing effect and increased production of multiple-choice lures as incorrect answers on the final test. The Status of Diagnostic Testing.

In this column, I wish to make a few observations on what I believe to be a rather serious problem in relation to diagnostic psychological testing. I cannot guarantee the generality of these observations, but I am led to believe, by my own experience and by that of others to whom I have talked, that the practices to which I shall refer are rather widespread. Apparently many staff psychologists regard diagnostic testing as a necessary, but at best tedious and relatively unimportant, responsibility. As a result, a disproportionate amount of the diagnostic testing is assigned to interns or trainees, thus reinforcing the notion among other professional people, and among the trainees themselves, that this is a second-rate, low level skill. I believe that, unless a fundamental change of attitude toward diagnostic testing is effected in many of our training centers, clinical psychology as a profession must eventually suffer. 我国能力验证技术服务能力情况分析

通过研究我国能力验证提供者(PTP)的认可能力范围和全国检验检测机构的检测服务能力范围之间的对应关系,分析能力验证在检测领域的开展情况以及领域覆盖情况。结果表明,目前我国能力验证技术服务基本能够满足合格评定要求,但是发展不均衡,规模不够大,专职提供能力验证服务的PTP少,超过50%的PTP能提供的能力验证服务少于20个;能力验证服务领域覆盖窄,在实验室认可细分的二级领域覆盖率只有50%左右,三级领域的覆盖率基本都少于50%,尚无法满足检验检测机构能力提升的需求。最后,针对我国能力验证的发展,提出了相关建议和措施。
