Telecommuting as viewed through cultural lenses: an empirical investigation of the discourses of utopia,identity, and mystery

Prior telecommuting research has focused both on teleworkers without comparison to other employee groups and on pragmatic implications of this work arrangement across organizations. In contrast, this investigation situated telecommuting as a socially constructed process and practice within the context of a specific hybrid (federal agency and private sector) organizational culture. We used Martin's (1992) three cultural lenses as a framework for analyzing in-house and telecommuting employees' discourses. These three cultural lenses illuminated how and why telecommuting functions paradoxically in organizations. In the integration lens, members framed FEDSIM as a coherent, innovative, and “employee-centric” utopian culture. Differentiation subcultures diverged from the telecommuter and in-house distinctions that we anticipated based on previous research. Instead, differentiation discourses revealed complex divisions between promotable and non-promotable employees who adhered to different spatio-temporal orientations toward and definitions of work. Through the fragmentation lens, members' talk coalesced around several mysterious processes of the ways things are supposed to and actually do operate. These findings suggest interventions that can assist leaders and members in capitalizing on telecommuting's unique advantages.     

An investigation into the move towards electronic journals: a case study of NHS libraries in Kent,Surrey and Sussex

Electronic journals are so embedded into practice in academic libraries that it is easy to forget that this is not the case everywhere. In NHS libraries, for example, the staff face a particular set of issues. This article is based on Rebecca England's dissertation on this topic, completed as part of the MSc Econ course in Information and Library studies at Aberystwyth University. Rebecca is E‐resources Librarian at the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. She investigated the momentum towards electronic journals in NHS libraries in the Kent, Surrey and Sussex region and the potential for a regional purchasing consortium. AM     

An investigation into the feasibility of designing a framework for the quantitative evaluation of the Clinical Librarian service at an NHS Trust in Brighton,UK

This feature presents research undertaken by Archana Deshmukh for her MA dissertation at the University of Brighton. She worked closely with Tom Roper, the Clinical Librarian at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, in a project to explore the feasibility of applying quantitative measures to evaluate the Clinical Librarian service. The investigation used an innovative participatory approach and the findings showed that although an exclusively quantitative approach to evaluation is not feasible, using a mixed methods approach is a way forward. Agreed outputs and outcomes could be embedded in a marketing plan, and the resulting framework could provide evidence to demonstrate overall impact. Archana graduated in July 2014, gaining a Distinction in the MA in Information Studies, and she is currently looking for work in the health information sector.     

Study and Conservation of the St. Nicola's Basilica Mosaics (Bari,Italy) by Photogrammetric Survey: Mapping of Polychrome Marbles,Decorative Patterns and Past Restorations

ABSTRACT

This present work focuses on the mapping of marbles, decorative patterns and area of the mosaics of the St. Nicola’s Basilica in Bari (Italy) by their photogrammetric survey. The extraordinary importance of these mosaics is due to the stylistic uniqueness and the undisputed workmanship and to the employed materials for tesserae. These mosaics include the white and polychrome marbles, used in the Roman age and reused in medieval artistic production, and imitation stones used as substitutes during the past restorations. The digital survey was realised by the photogrammetric reconstruction of mosaics collecting a photo dataset, after the mosaics redrawing by an image processing software and finally implemented it with lithological identification marbles. It allowed to obtain a punctual mapping of materials, through which to identify original areas and restoration areas, decorative patterns, recurring geometries. The research carried out, supported by the photogrammetric reconstruction as established method for high resolution digital reproduction and mapping, not only ensures the conservation and improvement of the enjoyment of the mosaic floors of the St. Nicola’s Basilica, but allows to conduct studies on materials, decorative patterns and restoration areas directly on the digitized product.     

Integrating Information Literacy into an Online Undergraduate Nursing Informatics Course: The Librarian's Role in the Design and Teaching of the Course

ABSTRACT

Integration of information literacy as a core component into a new online undergraduate nursing course proved to be a learning experience in course design and teaching. This article describes the framework for the course design that combined cultural competency, informatics, and information literacy and was grounded in informatics competencies for nurses at the beginning level, an informatics textbook, and the Neurnan Systems Model. The librarian's role in this process and the information literacy unit's content and written assignment are detailed, and challenges in the collaboration are also addressed.     

Integrating diversity,equity, and inclusion principles into instruction: Case studies from the University of Florida's Health Science Center Libraries

Librarians at the University of Florida Health Science Center Libraries have begun to intentionally incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles into teaching during design, implementation, and evaluation. This article uses four case studies to provide an overview of the librarians' approaches to inclusive teaching (1) an annual workshop for Physical Therapy students on the intersection between DEI, health literacy, and patient education; (2) a librarian-taught one-credit course for public health students, which was revised to create a more inviting syllabus and integrate elements of universal design; (3) an annual project for first year medical students highlighting health disparities and community resources; and (4) piloting the application of critical librarianship principles in library standalone sessions on database searching and reference management. Suggestions are provided for other librarians who are interested in developing a culture of inclusive teaching in their own libraries.     

Librarians,Faculty, and the Writing Center Partnering to Build an Interdisciplinary Course: A Case Study at the University of Houston,USA

This article covers how an interdisciplinary course was developed using the expertise and resources of a history professor, the history and psychology subject librarians, and the university's writing center. The course, supported by a grant, was aimed at helping students improve their research, information literacy, and writing skills across disciplines. The article discusses the involvement of the partners from the initial planning stages to its conclusion, focusing especially on how the librarians created a library session, course-specific guide, annotated bibliography assignment and grading rubric, and how these were used as opportunities to interact with the students throughout the course. Also covered are research and writing challenges, especially for English-language learner students, and how they were addressed by all the partners. It also discusses how the librarians used this experience to seek out opportunities to create similar collaborations with other instructors, and to strengthen ties with support services on campus.     

Social support within an on-line cancer community: an assessment of emotional support,perceptions of advantages and disadvantages,and motives for using the community from a communication perspective

This study investigated an on-line cancer support community emphasizing communication concerns important to the community administrators. The researcher conducted an on-line survey of participants (N v = v 103) focused on their on-line communication activities and social support. The results indicate a modest negative correlation between emotional support received on-line and perceived stress, differences in emotional support scores based on perceptions of disadvantages of on-line support groups, and different motives for using the community between people with cancer and family members. The study also describes suggestions based on the results that were made to community administrators and which could be used by other on-line support communities.

Virtual and Valued: A Review of the Successes (and a Few Failures) of the Creation,Implementation, and Evaluation of an Inaugural Virtual Conference and Monthly Webinars

Planning and implementing online professional development opportunities is challenging but attainable. This paper explains how a group of librarians from different institutions worked to plan, market, implement, and evaluate monthly webinars as well as an inaugural online conference, despite never meeting in person. The web conferences began in-state and grew to include presenters and attendees from across the nation. A review of available web-conferencing technologies will be provided, including free and open-source options. This paper includes details about the planning process, including subcommittee collaborations, social media marketing, and day-of logistics. Failures during event planning and execution—and tips to avoid them—will be discussed, as well as next steps looking forward.     

优化送审流程，构建科学、公正、高效的审稿机制 ——以《高等学校化学学报》为例

以《高等学校化学学报》分编辑部审稿工作为例,对以往送审方案的审稿结果进行统计,分析数据差异所对应的原因以及各送审方案的优缺点。优化送审流程,引入青年执行编委参与审稿后,再统计审稿结果数据,对比指出青年执行编委参与审稿的优势。通过赋予青年编委稿件的初筛权、审稿专家推荐权和处理审稿意见分歧仲裁权,探索以青年执行编委为审稿主体,构建更为科学、公正、高效的审稿机制。     

以跨学科、探究、实践为核心的博物馆STEM教育——以“未来航海家”STEM系列课程设计为例

本文从STEM教育与博物馆教育的共性、博物馆教育活动现状两方面论述了STEM教育理念应用于博物馆课程设计与实施的必要性和迫切性。以上海中国航海博物馆“未来航海家STEM系列课程”为例,剖析了博物馆STEM系列课程的设计开发路径,以“渡河的工具”子课程为例探讨了如何将“跨学科”“探究”“实践”三大核心理念有机融入博物馆STEM课程设计中,并对课程实施的难点进行反思,为将STEM教育整合融入我国博物馆课程设计提供参考。

Modelling the Triple Helix of university-industry-government relationships with game theory: Core,Shapley value and nucleolus as indicators of synergy within an innovation system

The Triple Helix of university-industry-government relationships is a three-person cooperative game with transferable utility. The core, the Shapley value and the nucleolus are suggested as indicators to measure the synergy between innovation actors. The core is the expression of actors’ interests and constraints exerted on them; it measures the extent of the synergy. The Shapley value indicates actors’ strength to lead to and create synergy; and the nucleolus determines the power of coalitions to maintain synergy. The Triple Helix games of the South Korean and the West African innovation systems are studied, based on bibliographic data collected from Web of Science over a ten-year period (2001–2010). Results show that the core of South Korea is larger than that of West Africa, meaning that synergy occurs more within the South Korean innovation system than in the West African one. University has more power to lead to and create synergy and coalitions involving government work in order to maintain synergy.

大学生移动阅读感知价值、满意度与行为意向的关系:以超星移动阅读APP平台为例

[目的/意义]以超星移动阅读APP为研究平台，探索高校大学生移动阅读的感知价值结构维度，分析其对满意度和行为意向的影响，为移动阅读服务提供商提高服务质量提供参考和建议。[方法/过程]采取焦点小组访谈和深度访谈相结合的定性方法，分析移动阅读感知价值的结构维度，构建感知价值、满意度和行为意向的关系模型，以大学生为研究对象进行问卷调查，利用结构方程进行数据分析。[结果/结论]知识价值、便利价值和情感价值对满意度和行为意向具有直接影响，还通过满意度间接影响行为意向；社会价值对满意度和行为意向均不存在显著影响。从作用效应来讲，知识价值和便利价值是影响满意度和行为意向的主要因素。
