AimTo determine whether children born extremely preterm are at increased risk for sleep disturbances and to explore relationships between extremely preterm birth, sleep and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms and emotional symptoms.MethodEPICure2 cohort study. Parents of 165 children born ≤26 weeks' gestation (53% male) and 121 children born at term (43% male) completed the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, sleep disordered breathing subscale of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire, the emotional problems scale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire and the ADHD Rating Scale-5 at 11 years of age.ResultsExtremely preterm children had greater habitual snoring (adjusted odds ratio 6.8; 95% confidence interval 2.3, 20.3), less frequently fell asleep within 20 minutes (Cohen's d 0.33), higher night wakings (d 0.44) and daytime sleepiness scores (d 0.40) than term-born children; there was no between-group difference in sleep duration scores. Among children without severe disability, night wakings scores partially mediated the relationship between preterm birth and inattention (additional 5% of variance explained), hyperactivity/impulsivity (13%) and emotional problems (9%). Snoring partially mediated the relationship between preterm birth, hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention (additional 1–5% of variance).ConclusionChildren born extremely preterm are at increased risk of disturbed sleep compared to term-born children. As night wakings partially mediated the relationship between preterm birth and ADHD symptoms and emotional problems, reducing sleep disturbance may improve sleep and reduce attention and emotional problems in this population.  相似文献

ObjectiveParents are often the first to report children's sleep difficulties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of parent reports by examining the correspondence of maternal and paternal reports of children's sleep with in-home electroencephalography (EEG) sleep assessment and sleep diary reports.MethodsA total of 143 children (57 formerly very preterm born children) aged 7–12 years underwent one night of in-home sleep-EEG; mothers and fathers reported children's sleep-related behavior by using the German version of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, and children and parents together completed a sleep diary of children's sleep.ResultsLess EEG-derived total sleep time (TST) was associated with increased mother questionnaire reports of sleep duration problems, while less sleep efficiency (SE) and longer sleep onset latency (SOL) were associated with increased mother questionnaire reports of sleep onset delay. For fathers, only longer SOL was related to increased father questionnaire reports of sleep onset delay. The abovementioned associations did not change with children's increasing age and did not differ for boys and girls. More parent questionnaire reports of sleep duration problems, sleep onset delay, and night wakings were related to shorter diary reports of sleep duration, increased sleep latency, and more nocturnal awakenings, respectively.ConclusionsMother questionnaire reports of children's sleep corresponded moderately with objective measures of TST, SE, and SOL assessed with in-home sleep-EEG. Both mother and father questionnaire reports of children's sleep duration problems, sleep onset delay, and night wakings were related to diary reports of children's sleep.  相似文献

Unhealthy sleep duration, either short or long, is associated with worse health and central subjective dimensions of sleep and health such as fatigue. It has been argued that the link between sleep duration and health may depend on the quality of the slept hours, and on its functional impact (ie, fatigue). The present study therefore assessed whether the relationship between last night's sleep duration and general self-rated health (SRH) differs as a function of sleep quality, and secondly, whether current fatigue and sleep quality are factors linking sleep duration and SRH.The present cross-sectional dataset involved 1304 individuals (57% female, Mage = 28.8, range 18–79). Participants completed surveys for general SRH, previous night's sleep duration and sleep quality, and current fatigue.Results showed the expected inverted U-shaped (ie, quadratic) relation between last night's sleep duration and SRH and a linear relation between last night's sleep quality and SRH. However, long sleep duration was only associated with poorer SRH in individuals who also reported poor sleep quality. Further, the quadratic relationship between sleep duration and SRH was partially mediated by fatigue and sleep quality.The results of this multi-study analysis suggest that SRH is particularly poor in those who slept both long and with poor quality the night before, while good sleep quality may protect those with a long sleep duration from poor SRH. Thus, last night's long sleep does not seem to be associated with poor subjective health unless it is coupled with poor sleep quality. Furthermore, fatigue and sleep quality are potential pathways linking short and long sleep duration with SRH. Different dimensions of sleep interact in their association with health, and future research will benefit from an integrative approach.  相似文献

BackgroundSleep problems are common in individuals with ASD. This study examined the relationships between bedtime consistency, cognitive functioning, comorbid diagnoses, intervention, demographics and sleep duration in children with ASD.MethodCross-sectional data from 1683 children with ASD in the 2016 and 2017 National Survey of Children's Health were analyzed. The sample was 80 % male, 46 % non-Hispanic white, and mean age was 10.5 (SD 4.1) years. All data were parent report. Multiple linear regression was performed.ResultsASD severity was associated with shorter sleep duration, and bedtime consistency was associated with longer sleep duration. Age moderated the effects of both bedtime consistency and ADD/ADHD on sleep duration. Both the positive effect of bedtime consistency and the negative effect of ADD/ADHD on sleep duration became less pronounced with age.ConclusionAlthough the challenges related to sleep and behavior may differ by age of the child, bedtime consistency could be a good target to improve sleep duration for all children with ASD. Future studies, especially longitudinal studies, on sleep habits and sleep hygiene, in conjunction with other measures of sleep patterns (e.g., night wakings) and correlates of sleep problems, may provide further evidence for the importance of good sleep practices and guide sleep treatment in children with ASD.  相似文献

IntroductionPrevious studies have revealed the significant influence of electronic devices, especially social media use, on sleep difficulties among adolescents. In this study, disturbed sleep due to social media use (DSSM) was defined as reduced or troubled sleep caused by nighttime-specific behaviors such as waking to check updates, being notified by incoming messages, or postponed bedtime because of social media activities. Inadequate and disturbed sleep during youth interferes with daytime academic efficiency and may be associated with school burnout, which were examined in this study.MethodsUsing two data waves collected from questionnaires on school burnout and DSSM and school test scores of 2462 Taiwanese middle school students (52.5% males) from various school types with average ages of 13.9 (SD = 0.72) and 14.3 (SD = 0.66) at Time 1 and Time 2, we investigated the relationship between the variables across time.ResultsDSSM, academic performance, and school burnout were significantly correlated. Cross-lagged analyses to the group of adolescents with higher than the average DSSM scores revealed that burnout predicted lower academic achievements through DSSM as a mediator. Burnout did not have a direct effect on school performance but influenced the latter through disturbed sleep. Poor academic achievement in its turn showed a feedback effect on higher levels of burnout.ConclusionsThis research reveals a vicious cycle of burnout, disturbed sleep, and academic achievement. During adolescence, school burnout through DSSM increase can lead to a lower academic performance that may later cause even higher burnout.  相似文献

BackgroundSleep problems are frequent and well documented in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and children with internalizing problems, however limited work has examined sleep problems in children presenting with comorbid ASD/ADHD. In healthy children, sleep problems negatively impact social, emotional, and academic functioning. The current study sought to examine diagnostic severity as predictors of sleep problems in children with comorbid ASD/ADHD. Additionally, the association between sleep and “real-life” functional domains (i.e., intellectual functioning, academic achievement, and executive functioning) were assessed.MethodSleep, internalizing difficulties, intellectual functioning, academic achievement and executive functioning were assessed in 85 children with who carried the dual diagnoses of ASD and ADHD.ResultsInternalizing difficulties, rather than ASD or ADHD symptom severity, was the most consistent predictor of problematic sleep behaviors (i.e., nightmares overtiredness, sleeping less than other children, trouble sleeping, and Total Problematic Sleep Behaviors) in this sample. Further, parent report of problematic sleep behaviors was significantly associated with functional domains after controlling for ASD, ADHD, and internalizing symptoms.ConclusionsResults suggest that internalizing symptoms are associated with problematic sleep behaviors in children with comorbid ASD/ADHD and may have implications for the “real-life” functioning among children with comorbid ASD/ADHD.  相似文献

Abstract

Objectives. Evidence suggests the involvement of the dopamine D4 receptor gene (DRD4) in the pathogenesis of ADHD, but the exact mechanism is not well understood. Earlier reports on the effects of DRD4 polymorphisms on neurocognitive and neuroimaging measures are inconsistent. This study investigated the functional consequences of the 7-repeat allele of DRD4 on neurocognitive endophenotypes of ADHD in the Dutch subsample of the International Multicenter ADHD Genetics study. Methods. Participants were 350 children (5–11.5 years) and adolescents (11.6–19 years) with ADHD and their 195 non-affected siblings. An overall measure of neuropsychological functioning was derived by principal component analysis from five neurocognitive and five motor tasks. The effects of DRD4 and age were examined using Linear Mixed Model analyses. Results. The analyses were stratified for affected and non-affected participants after finding a significant three-way interaction between ADHD status, age and the 7-repeat allele. Apart from a main effect of age, a significant interaction effect of age and DRD4 was found in non-affected but not in affected participants, with non-affected adolescent carriers of the 7-repeat allele showing worse neuropsychological performance. In addition, carrying the 7-repeat allele of DRD4 was related to a significantly worse performance on verbal working memory in non-affected siblings, independent of age. Conclusions. These results might indicate that the effect of the DRD4 7-repeat allele on neuropsychological functioning is dependent on age and ADHD status.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo examine the associations between sleep hygiene and sleep patterns in children ages newborn to 10 years. The relationships between key features of good sleep hygiene in childhood and recognizable outcomes have not been studied in large, nationally representative samples.Participants and methodsA national poll of 1473 parents/caregivers of children ages newborn to 10 years was conducted in 2004. The poll included questions on sleep hygiene (poor sleep hygiene operationally defined as not having a consistent bedtime routine, bedtime after 9:00 PM, having a parent present when falling asleep at bedtime, having a television in the bedroom, and consuming caffeinated beverages daily) and sleep patterns (sleep onset latency, frequency of night wakings, and total sleep time).ResultsAcross all ages, a late bedtime and having a parent present when the child falls asleep had the strongest negative association with reported sleep patterns. A late bedtime was associated with longer sleep onset latency and shorter total sleep time, whereas parental presence was associated with more night wakings. Those children (ages 3+) without a consistent bedtime routine also were reported to obtain less sleep. Furthermore, a television in the bedroom (ages 3+) and regular caffeine consumption (ages 5+) were associated with shorter total sleep time.ConclusionsOverall, this study found that good sleep hygiene practices are associated with better sleep across several age ranges. These findings support the importance of common US based recommendations that children of all ages should fall asleep independently, go to bed before 9:00 PM, have an established bedtime routine, include reading as part of their bedtime routine, refrain from caffeine, and sleep in bedrooms without televisions.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo outline specific sleep disturbances in different clinical subsets of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and to confirm, by means of nocturnal video-polysomnography (video-PSG), a variety of sleep disorders in ADHD besides the classically described periodic leg movement disorder (PLMD), restless legs syndrome (RLS) and sleep related breathing disorder (SRBD).MethodsFifty-five ADHD children (47 M, 8F; mean age = 8.9y) were included: 16 had Inattentive and 39 Hyperactive/Impulsive or Combined ADHD subtype. Behavior assessment by Conners and SNAP-IV Scales, a structured sleep interview and a nocturnal video-PSG were administered.ResultsMost children/parents reported disturbed, fragmentary sleep at night; complaints were motor restlessness (50%), sleep walking (47.6%), night terrors (38%), confusional arousals (28.5%), snoring (21.4%), and leg discomfort at night associated with RLS (11.9%). There is a significant difference (p value <0.05 or <0.001) in almost all the studied sleep variables between ADHD children and controls. International RLS Rating Scale scoring, Periodic Limb Movements during Sleep (PLMS) and Wake (PLMW) indexes, hyperactivity and opposition scores and ADHD subtype appear related. Different sleep disorders seem to address specific ADHD phenotypes and correlate with severity of symptoms as in sleep related movement disorders occurring in Hyperactive/Impulsive and Combined ADHD subtypes. Besides, an abnormality of the arousal process in slow wave sleep with consequent abnormal prevalence of disorders of arousal possibly enhanced by SRBD has also been detected in 52% of our sample.ConclusionsThis study underlines the opportunity to propose and promote the inclusion of sleep studies, possibly by video-PSG, as part of the diagnostic screening for ADHD. This strategy could address the diagnosis and treatment of different specific ADHD phenotypic expressions that might be relevant to children’s symptoms and contribute to ADHD severity.  相似文献

ObjectiveSleep plays an essential role for children's well-being. Because children's sleep is associated with parental sleep patterns, it must be considered in the family context. As a first aim of the present study, we test whether parental insomnia symptoms are related to children's in-home sleep-electroencephalography (EEG). Second, we examine the association between parental insomnia symptoms and maternal and paternal perception of children's sleep using actor–partner interdependence models.MethodsA total of 191 healthy children enrolled in public school and aged 7–12 years took part in the study. Ninety-six were formerly very preterm born children. Children underwent in-home sleep-EEG, and parents reported children's sleep-related behavior by using the German version of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire. Further, parents completed the Insomnia Severity Index to report their own insomnia symptoms.ResultsMaternal but not paternal insomnia symptoms were related to less children's EEG-derived total sleep time, more stage 2 sleep, less slow wave sleep, later sleep onset time, and later awakening time. Mothers' and fathers' own insomnia symptoms were related to their reports of children's bedtime resistance, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, night wakings, and/or daytime sleepiness. Moreover, maternal insomnia symptoms were associated with paternal reports of children's bedtime resistance, sleep anxiety, and sleep-disordered breathing. The associations between parental insomnia symptoms and parents' perception of children's sleep could not be explained by children's objectively measured sleep.ConclusionsMothers' insomnia symptoms and children's objective sleep patterns are associated. Moreover, the parents' own insomnia symptoms might bias their perception of children's sleep-related behavior problems.  相似文献

ObjectiveClinical observation and structural MRI studies suggest that delayed brain maturation is a major cause of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) which exhibits major changes across adolescence provides an opportunity to investigate brain electrophysiology evidence for maturational delay. We present data from an ongoing longitudinal study of sleep EEG in medication-free ADHD and typically developing adolescents to investigate brain electrophysiological evidence for this maturational delay.MethodsNine adolescents diagnosed with ADHD (combined presentation, DSM-V criteria, mean age 12.39 ± 0.61 years, 2 females), and nine typically developing controls (12.08 ± 0.35 years, 4 females) were recruited. Subjects underwent an adaptation night and all night polysomnography twice yearly at the Laboratory.ResultsBasic sleep structure did not differ between the ADHD and control groups. In addition, we found no group differences on delta power (p = 0.77), but found a possible trend toward higher theta power (p = 0.057) for the ADHD group. The decline of standardized delta power across the 4 non-rapid eye movement (NREM) periods differed by group (p < 0.05) with the percent delta power in the first NREM period being lower in the ADHD group.ConclusionsOur data support the preponderant evidence that basic sleep structure is unaltered with ADHD. Our data do suggest altered sleep homeostatic recuperative processes in ADHD. The theta findings from the first two recordings are suggestive of a maturational delay associated with ADHD, but follow-up data-points are needed.  相似文献

ObjectiveSeveral child-report measures of sleep functioning have been developed but very few studies have examined the external validity of child self-reported sleep in relation to daytime functioning. This study examined child-reported sleep in relation to teacher-rated psychopathology symptoms and also tested the hypothesis that child-reported sleep would be associated with poorer child- and teacher-reported functioning after controlling for demographics and psychopathology symptoms that are known to be associated with adjustment.MethodsParticipants were 175 children (81 boys, 94 girls) in 1st–6th grades (ages 6–13) and their teachers. Children completed the Sleep Self-Report. Teachers completed a measure of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional/conduct, and anxiety/depression symptoms. Children and teachers completed multiple measures of academic, behavioral, and social/peer functioning.ResultsChild-reported sleep was significantly associated with teacher-rated inattentive and internalizing symptoms, even after controlling for child demographics, hyperactivity-impulsivity, and conduct problems. Multilevel modeling analyses further indicated that, after controlling for child demographics and psychopathology symptoms, child-reported sleep problems were significantly associated with poorer child- and teacher-reported academic, behavioral, and social functioning (including increased reactive aggression, peer rejection, loneliness, and lower friendship satisfaction and self-worth).ConclusionsFindings provide initial support for the external validity of children's self-reported sleep functioning. Results of this study suggest that it may be clinically useful to screen for sleep problems by assessing for children's own perceptions of their sleep. Future studies should include both child- and parent-reported sleep functioning to further examine the utility of children's ratings of sleep functioning.  相似文献

ADHD is a neural developmental disorder expressed in various life settings. Yet, previous studies have focused mainly on children's function in school and academic achievement. The purpose of the present study was, therefore, to examine participation patterns in outside formal school activities among boys with ADHD compared to typical boys. Participants included 25 boys aged 8–11 years with ADHD and 25 age-matched typical boys. All participants completed the Children's Assessment of Participation and Enjoyment (CAPE). Several aspects of participation were examined: diversity, intensity, enjoyment, place, and partners in 49 extra curricular activities. The findings indicate that boys with ADHD reported significant lower intensity rates of participation in most activity domains. Furthermore, boys with ADHD also reported higher diversity scores and lower enjoyment in ‘formal’ activities. Yet, no significant differences were found with regard to activity place and partners. These findings enhance the importance of providing therapy that refers to after school activities. Accordingly, CAPE can be useful for assessing boys with ADHD and planning appropriate intervention programs.  相似文献

BackgroundEvidence regarding the associations between sleep duration and quality, and neurocognitive function in adolescents remains scanty. This study examined the associations in early adolescence between: sleep duration; efficiency; fragmentation; wake-after-sleep-onset (WASO); catch-up sleep; intelligence; memory; and executive function, including attention.MethodsThis study included 354 girls and boys with a mean age 12.3 years (SD = 0.5) from a birth cohort born in 1998. Sleep was measured with accelerometers for an average of eight nights. Cognitive function was evaluated with subtests from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III (WISC-III), the Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment 2 (NEPSY-2), the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST), Conners' Continuous Performance Task (CPT), and the Trail Making Test (TMT).ResultsIn girls, a higher WASO and fragmentation index were associated with poorer executive functioning (higher number of perseverative errors in the WCST), and longer catch-up sleep was associated with longer reaction times and better performance in one verbal intelligence test (Similarities subtest of the WISC-III). In boys, shorter sleep duration, lower efficiency, higher WASO, higher sleep fragmentation and shorter catch-up sleep were associated with lower executive functioning (more commission errors, shorter reaction times, and had lower D Prime scores in CPT).ConclusionsIn adolescent girls, poorer sleep quality was only weakly associated with poorer executive functioning, while in boys, poorer sleep quantity and quality were associated with an inattentive pattern of executive functioning. The amount of catch-up sleep during weekends showed mixed patterns in relation to neurocognitive function.  相似文献

ObjectivesChildren with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are at high risk for sleep problems. Previous research suggests that sensory problems and anxiety may be related to the development and maintenance of sleep problems in children with ASD. However, the relationships among these co-occurring conditions have not been previously studied. The current study examined the interrelations of these symptoms in a large well-characterized sample of children and adolescents with ASD.MethodsThe current study examined the relationships among sleep problems, sensory over-responsivity, and anxiety in 1347 children enrolled in the Autism Speaks Autism Treatment Network. The primary measures included the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire, the Child Behavior Checklist, and the Short Sensory Profile.ResultsIn bivariate correlations and multivariate path analyses, anxiety was associated with all types of sleep problems (ie, bedtime resistance, sleep-onset delay, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, and night wakings; p <0.01 to p <0.001; small to medium effect sizes). Sensory over-responsivity (SOR) was correlated with all sleep problems in bivariate analyses (p <0.01 to p <0.001; small effect sizes). In multivariate path models, SOR remained significantly associated with all sleep problems except night awakenings for older children, while SOR was no longer significantly associated with bedtime resistance or sleep anxiety for younger children.ConclusionsChildren with ASD who have anxiety and SOR may be particularly predisposed to sleep problems. These findings suggest that some children with ASD and sleep disturbance may have difficulties with hyperarousal. Future research using physiological measures of arousal and objective measures of sleep are needed.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to examine the effects of sleep timing, quality and duration on school achievement in adolescents.MethodsThirty-six Italian students (mean age: 18.14 ± 0.49 years) attending their last year of high school participated in the study. They completed the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (MEQ-CA). This was used to determine their ideal sleep timing by computing the total score, with higher scores corresponding to a greater tendency toward morningness. In addition, students underwent two non-consecutive weeks of actigraphy in one-month period to objectively assess: habitual sleep timing through the midpoint of sleep (MS); habitual sleep quality through the parameter of sleep efficiency (SE); and habitual sleep duration through the parameter of total sleep time (TST). Participants also completed the Mini Sleep Questionnaire, which allowed us to assess perceived sleep quality, at the end of each actigraphic-recording week. School performance was assessed using the grades obtained by students in their school leaving exams taken at the end of the school year.ResultsA significant positive correlation was observed between SE and exam grades, as well as MEQ-CA scores and grades. Multiple regression analysis showed that only SE was significantly and positively related to the final grade.ConclusionsExamining objective and ecological measures, SE (indicator of sleep quality) had the strongest effect on school achievement in adolescents.  相似文献

The present study examined age-related changes in the sleep of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) compared to age-related changes in the sleep of typically developing (TD) children. Participants were 108 mothers of children with ASD and 108 mothers of TD children. Participants completed a questionnaire on children's overall sleep quality that also tapped specific sleep-domains (i.e., bedtime resistance, sleep onset delay, sleep duration, sleep anxiety, night wakings, parasomnias, disordered breathing, daytime sleepiness). Results confirm significantly poorer sleep quantity and quality in children with ASD, particularly children age 6–9 years. Unlike TD children, the sleep problems of children with ASD were unlikely to diminish with age. Our findings suggest that it is important to exam specific domains of sleep as well as overall sleep patterns. Finding of significant age-related interactions suggests that the practice of combining children from wide age-ranges into a single category obfuscates potentially important developmental differences.  相似文献

Based on previous findings of frequent sleep problems in children with Down syndrome (DS) and Williams syndrome (WS), the present study aimed to expand our knowledge by using parent report and actigraphy to define sleep problems more precisely in these groups. Twenty-two school-aged children with DS, 24 with WS and 52 typically developing (TD) children took part in the study. Each child wore an actiwatch for a minimum of four nights and parents completed the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Sleep problems were common in both developmental disorders. Children with DS had the greatest sleep disruption, with frequent and longer night wakings as well as restlessness. Parents reported symptoms of sleep-disordered breathing and a range of other problems including grinding teeth, bedtime resistance and sleep anxiety. Children with WS had problems initiating sleep and parents also reported bed-wetting and body pain. Despite these problems, the mean actual sleep time, as measured by actigraphy, did not differ between the three groups. CSHQ reports were in agreement with actigraphy for children's sleep duration, but this was not the case for sleep latency, restlessness and the night wakings variables. Sleep problems in DS and WS are common and appear to be syndrome-specific. Due to the inaccuracy of parent report, it is recommended that children at risk undergo objective measures of sleep assessment.  相似文献

ObjectivesOur study aimed to assess the impact of one night of slow-wave sleep (SWS) suppression on glucose tolerance, and explore whether melatonin plays a role in glucose tolerance impairment after SWS suppression.MethodsIn sum, 20 volunteers participated in two experimental sessions: a session with SWS suppression during one night's sleep and a session with a regular night's sleep (control). Each session included collecting seven salivary samples. The following morning, an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed.ResultsSWS suppression effects depended on the individual blood glucose response to the OGTT. During the control session, ‘responders’ (N = 11), already presented with low glucose tolerance, which further declined after SWS suppression. ‘Non-responders’ (N = 9) experienced high glucose tolerance in both conditions. Among the responders, SWS suppression led to an increase in melatonin at the moment of awakening, while in non-responders melatonin increased during the first half of the night. In both conditions, responders were characterized by a shorter total sleep time (TST) and less rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During SWS suppression, they had more non-rapid eye movement (NREM) stage 1 and longer nocturnal wakefulness. Responders and non-responders showed a comparable amount of SWS.ConclusionsThis study highlights three key findings: first, SWS suppression leads to an increase in salivary melatonin; second, melatonin's effect on glucose tolerance depends on its secretion timing; and third, durations of REM sleep and nocturnal awakenings, appear to play an important role in melatonin secretion and glucose tolerance, indicating the potential clinical relevance of these findings for type 2 diabetes risk assessment.  相似文献
