Heat transfer enhancement in horizontal annuli using nanofluids is investigated. Water-based nanofluid containing various volume fractions of Cu, Ag, Al2O3 and TiO2 nanoparticles is used. The addition of the different types and different volume fractions of nanoparticles were found to have adverse effects on heat transfer characteristics. For high values of Rayleigh number and high L/D ratio, nanoparticles with high thermal conductivity cause significant enhancement of heat transfer characteristics. On the other hand, for intermediate values of Rayleigh number, nanoparticles with low thermal conductivity cause a reduction in heat transfer. For Ra = 103 and Ra = 105 the addition of Al2O3 nanoparticles improves heat transfer. However, for Ra = 104, the addition of nanoparticles has a very minor effect on heat transfer characteristics.  相似文献

In this paper, laminar convective heat transfer in a two-dimensional microtube (MT) with 50 μm diameter and 250 μm length with constant heat flux is numerically investigated. The governing (continuity, momentum and energy) equations were solved using the finite volume method (FVM) with the aid of SIMPLE algorithm. Different types of nanofluids Al2O3, CuO, SiO2 and ZnO, with different nanoparticle size 25, 45, 65 and 80 nm, and different volume fractions ranged from 1% to 4% using ethylene glycol as a base fluid were used. This investigation covers Reynolds number in the range of 10 to 1500. The results have shown that SiO2–EG nanofluid has the highest Nusselt number, followed by ZnO–EG, CuO–EG, Al2O3–EG, and lastly pure EG. The Nusselt number for all cases increases with the volume fraction but it decreases with the rise in the diameter of nanoparticles. In all configurations, the Nusselt number increases with Reynolds number.  相似文献

In this paper the natural convection boundary layer on a horizontal elliptical cylinder with constant heat flux and temperature dependent internal heat generation is investigated. The mathematical problem is reduced to a pair of coupled partial differential equations for the temperature and the stream function, and the resulting nonlinear equations are solved numerically by cubic spline collocation method. Results for the local Nusselt number and the local skin-friction coefficient are presented as functions of eccentric angle for various values of heat generation parameters, Prandtl numbers and aspect ratios. An increase in the aspect ratio of the elliptical cylinder decreases the average surface temperature of the elliptical cylinder with blunt orientation, while it increases the average surface temperature of the elliptical cylinder with slender orientation. Moreover, an increase in the heat generation parameter for natural convection flow over a horizontal elliptic cylinder with constant heat flux leads to an increase in the average surface temperature of the elliptical cylinder.  相似文献

Transient natural convection heat transfer of aqueous nanofluids in a differentially heated square cavity is investigated numerically. The effective thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity of nanofluids are predicted by using the proposed models that take the contribution of Brownian motion of nanoparticles into account. Three different Rayleigh numbers and five different volume fractions of nanoparticles are considered. The development of natural convection is presented through the evolutions of the average Nusselt number along the cold side wall. The predicted flow development times and time-averaged Nusselt numbers are scaled with Rayleigh number. In addition, the time-averaged Nusselt numbers are presented in terms of volume fraction of nanoparticles. It is shown that at constant Rayleigh numbers, the time-averaged Nusselt number is lowered with increasing volume fraction of nanoparticles.  相似文献

This work examines the natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal isothermal cylinder of elliptic cross section in a Newtonian fluid with temperature dependent internal heat generation. The governing boundary layer equations are transformed into a non-dimensional form and the resulting nonlinear systems of partial differential equations are solved numerically applying cubic spline collocation method. Results for the local Nusselt number and the local skin-friction coefficient are presented as functions of eccentric angle for various values of heat generation parameters, Prandtl numbers and aspect ratios. Results show that both the heat transfer rate and skin friction of the elliptical cylinder with slender orientation are higher than the elliptical cylinder with blunt orientation. Moreover, an increase in the heat generation parameter for natural convection flow over an isothermal horizontal elliptic cylinder leads to a decrease in the heat transfer rate from the elliptical cylinder and an increase in the skin friction of the elliptical cylinder.  相似文献

Two simple semiempirical correlations for an estimate of heat transfer in horizontal layers of superposed immiscible fluids with internal heat sources are suggested. Different boundary conditions are considered. The predicted results are compared with the known experimental correlations. The results are of interest to post-accident heat removal in fast and light water reactors.  相似文献

This work examines the natural convection heat and mass transfer near a sphere with constant wall temperature and concentration in a micropolar fluid. A coordinate transformation is used to transform the governing equations into nondimensional nonsimilar boundary layer equations and the obtained boundary layer equations are then solved by the cubic spline collocation method. Results for the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number are presented as functions of the vortex viscosity parameter, Schmidt number, buoyancy ratio, and Prandtl number. For micropolar fluids, higher viscosity tends to retard the flow and thus decreases the natural convection heat and mass transfer rates from the sphere with constant wall temperature and concentration. Moreover, the natural convection heat and mass transfer rates from a sphere in Newtonian fluids are higher than those in micropolar fluids.  相似文献

Heat transfer by natural convection in triangular enclosures is an area of significant importance in applications such as the design of greenhouses, attics and solar water heaters. However, given its significance to these areas it has not been widely examined. In this study, the natural convection heat transfer coefficients for air in an attic shaped enclosure were determined for Grashof Numbers over the range of 107 to 109. It was found that the measured heat transfer coefficients could be predicted to within 5% by Ridouane and Campo's [E.H. Ridouane, A. Campo, Experimental-based correlations for the characterization of free convection of air inside isosceles triangular cavities with variable apex angles, Experimental Heat Transfer 18 (2) (2005) 81–86] equation (Eq. (1)) for natural convection in a triangular enclosure previously developed for Grashof Numbers in the range of 105 to 106.

Using the background field variational method, bounds on natural convective heat transfer in a porous layer heated from below with fixed heat flux are derived from the primitive equations. The enhancement of heat transfer beyond the minimal conduction value (the Nusselt number Nu) is bounded in terms of the non-dimensional forcing scale set by the ‘effective’ Rayleigh number () according to Nu ≤ 0.3541/2 and in terms of the conventional Rayleigh number (Ra) defined by the temperature drop across the layer according to Nu ≤ 0.125Ra. It is presented that fixing the heat flux at the boundaries does not change the linear dependence between Nusselt number and Rayleigh number at high Rayleigh number region.  相似文献

This work presents a boundary-layer analysis about the natural convection heat and mass transfer near a vertical truncated cone with variable wall temperature and concentration in a porous medium saturated with non-Newtonian power-law fluids. A coordinate transform is used to obtain the nonsimilar governing equations, and the transformed boundary-layer equations are solved by the cubic spline collocation method. Results for local Nusselt numbers are presented as functions of power-law indexes, surface temperature and concentration exponents, buoyancy ratios, and Lewis numbers. The heat and mass transfer rates of the truncated cones with higher surface temperature and concentration exponents are higher than those with lower exponents. Moreover, an increase in the power-law index of fluids tends to decrease the heat and mass transfer from a vertical truncated cone in a porous medium saturated with non-Newtonian power-law fluids.  相似文献

An analytical study is performed to examine the thermal diffusion characteristics of free convection and mass transfer flow in a non-Newtonian fluid (Walters, 1962: liquid B') past a uniformly accelerated infinite vertical plate in the presence of thermal diffusion. The expression for the velocity field is obtained by the Laplace transform technique. The influence of the Soret number (a thermal diffusion parameter) on the velocity field is extensively discussed with the help of graphs.  相似文献

If the hydrodynamic diameter of a channel is comparable with the mean free path of the gas molecules moving inside the channel, the fluid can no longer be considered to be in thermodynamic equilibrium and a variety of non-continuum or rarefaction effects can occur. To avoid enormous complexity and extensive numerical cost encountered in modeling of nonlinear Boltzmann equations, the Navier–Stokes equations can be solved considering the concepts of slip flow regime and applying slip velocity boundary conditions at the solid walls.  相似文献

In this paper, convective heat transfer effect on the non-Newtonian nanofluid flow in the horizontal tube with constant heat flux was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). For this purpose, non-Newtonian nanofluid containing Al2O3 and Xanthan aqueous solution as a liquid single phase with two average particle sizes of 45 and 150 nm and four particle concentrations of 1, 2, 4 and 6 wt.% and two concentrations of Xanthan aqueous solutions (0.6,1.0 wt.%) were used. Effect of particle size and concentration of Xanthan solution on convective heat transfer coefficient was investigated in different Reynolds numbers (500 < Re < 2500) for various axial locations of tube. The results showed that heat transfer coefficient and Nu number of non-Newtonian nanofluid increased with increasing concentration of Xanthan solution. By applying the modeling results, an equation was obtained for Nusselt number prediction using the dimensionless numbers. The results showed that the correlated data were in very good agreement with predicted data. The maximum error was around 5%.  相似文献

This paper analyzes heat transfer and fluid flow of natural convection in inclined cavity filled with CuO-water nanofluid heated from one side and cooled from the ceiling. The transport equations for the flow are solved numerically by the finite volume element method using the SIMPLER algorithm Based on numerical predictions. The effects of Rayleigh number and aspect ratio on flow pattern and energy transport are investigated for Rayleigh numbers ranging from 104 to 107 volume fraction of solid varied to 0%–4% and for five different aspect ratios of 0.08, 0.1, 0.125, 0.25 and 0.5. It is found that the effect of Rayleigh number on heat transfer is less significant when the enclosure is shallow (AR = 0.5) and the influence of aspect ratio is stronger when the enclosure is tall and the Rayleigh number is high.  相似文献

The use of convection suppression devices has been widely discussed in the literature as a means of reducing natural convection heat loss from enclosed spaces. In this study the use of a single baffle was examined as a possible low cost means of suppressing heat loss by natural convection in an attic shaped enclosure.  相似文献

In this study convective heat transfer of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-based nanofluids in a straight tube under constant wall heat flux condition is numerically investigated. To achieve this goal Navier–Stokes equations are solved using the finite volume technique with considering CNT-based nanofluids as non-Newtonian fluids of shear-thinning character using the non-Newtonian power law model. The objectives of this research are to provide detailed information of non-Newtonian behavior of CNT nanofluids, comparison of the numerical simulation predictions to the experimental measurements and investigation of non-Newtonian effects on the local heat transfer of the CNT nanofluid and compare the thermal performance of the CNT nanofluids and conventional fluids. As a result the heat transfer coefficient is dominated by the wall region due to non-Newtonian behavior of CNT nanofluid. The results reported in this paper illustrate that the numerical simulation can be one of the most powerful and beneficial tools for the CNT nanofluids optimization and performance analysis.  相似文献

The effect of using nanofluids on heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics in rectangular shaped microchannel heat sink (MCHS) is numerically investigated for Reynolds number range of 100–1000. In this study, the MCHS performance using alumina–water (Al2O3-H2O) nanofluid with volume fraction ranged from 1% to 5% was used as a coolant is examined. The three-dimensional steady, laminar flow and heat transfer governing equations are solved using finite volume method. The MCHS performance is evaluated in terms of temperature profile, heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop, friction factor, wall shear stress and thermal resistance. The results reveal that when the volume fraction of nanoparticles is increased under the extreme heat flux, both the heat transfer coefficient and wall shear stress are increased while the thermal resistance of the MCHS is decreased. However, nanofluid with volume fraction of 5% could not be able to enhance the heat transfer or performing almost the same result as pure water. Therefore, the presence of nanoparticles could enhance the cooling of MCHS under the extreme heat flux conditions with the optimum value of nanoparticles. Only a slight increase in the pressure drop across the MCHS is found compared with the pure water-cooled MCHS.  相似文献

In this article, forced convection heat transfer with laminar and developed flow for water-Al2O3 nanofluid inside a circular tube under constant heat flux from the wall was numerically investigated using computational fluid dynamics method. Both single and two-phase models are accomplished for either constant or temperature dependent properties. For this study nanofluids with size particles equal to 100 nm and particle concentrations of 1 and 4 wt% were used. It is observed that the nanoparticles when dispersed in base fluid such as water enhance the convective heat transfer coefficient. The Nusselt number and heat transfer coefficient of nanofluids were obtained for different nanoparticle concentrations and various Reynolds numbers. Heat transfer was enhanced by increasing the concentration of nanoparticles in nanofluid and Reynolds number. Also, a correlation based on the dimensionless numbers was obtained for the prediction the Nusselt number. The modeling results showed that the predicted values were in very good agreement with reference experimental data.  相似文献

Four samples of 1 wt% multi-walled carbon nanotube-based (MWCNT) aqueous nanofluids prepared via ultrasonication were thermally characterized. Direct imaging was done using a newly developed wet-TEM technique to assess the dispersion state of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in suspension. The effect of dispersing energy (ultrasonication) on viscosity, thermal conductivity, and the laminar convective heat transfer was studied. Results indicate that thermal conductivity and heat transfer enhancement increased until an optimum ultrasonication time was reached, and decreased on further ultrasonication. The suspensions exhibited a shear thinning behavior, which followed the Power Law viscosity model. The maximum enhancements in thermal conductivity and convective heat transfer were found to be 20% and 32%, respectively. The thermal conductivity enhancement increased considerably at temperatures greater than 24 °C. The enhancement in convective heat transfer was found to increase with axial distance. A number of mechanisms related to boundary layer thickness, micro-convective effect, particle rearrangement, possible induced convective effects due to temperature and viscosity variations in the radial direction, and the non-Newtonian nature of the samples are discussed.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the thermal behaviour of an assembly of consecutive cylinders in a counter-rotating configuration cooled by natural convection with the objective of maximizing the heat transfer density rate (heat transfer rate per unit volume). A numerical model is used to solve the governing equations that describe the temperature and flow fields. The spacing between the consecutive cylinders is optimised for each flow regime (Rayleigh number) and cylinder rotation speed. It was found that the optimized spacing decreases as the Rayleigh number increases and the heat transfer density rate increases, for the optimized structure, as the cylinder rotation speed is increased. Results further shows that there is an increase in the heat transfer density rate of the rotating cylinders over stationary cylinders.  相似文献
