At luminosities below a few percent of Eddington, accreting black holes switch to a hard spectral state which is very different from the soft blackbody-like spectral state that is found at higher luminosities. The hard state is well-described by a two-temperature, optically thin, geometrically thick, advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) in which the ions are extremely hot (up to 1012 K near the black hole), the electrons are also hot (∼109−10.5 K), and thermal Comptonization dominates the X-ray emission. The radiative efficiency of an ADAF decreases rapidly with decreasing mass accretion rate, becoming extremely low when a source reaches quiescence. ADAFs are expected to have strong outflows, which may explain why relativistic jets are often inferred from the radio emission of these sources. It has been suggested that most of the X-ray emission also comes from a jet, but this is less well established.  相似文献

The variability of the optical and X-ray fluxes from the binary GS 1826-238 is investigated. An epoch-folding analysis of the optical data obtained with the RTT-150 telescope in 2003–2004 has revealed periodic brightness variations in the source with a period P orb = 2.24940 ± 0.00015 h with a high statistical significance. When estimating the detection significance of the periodic signal, we have specially taken into account the presence of a powerful aperiodic component (“red noise”) in the source’s brightness variability. The source’s power density spectra in the frequency range ∼10−5–0.01 Hz have been obtained. We have detected a statistically significant break in the power density spectrum of GS 1826-238 at a frequency ν br ≈ (8.48 ± 0.14) × 10−5 Hz in both optical and X-ray energy bands. We have estimated the orbital period of the binary GS 1826-238 using the correlation between the break frequency in the power density spectrum and the orbital period of binaries, P orb ∝ 1/ν br, found by Gilfanov and Arefiev (2005): P orb = 3.7 ± 0.8 h and P orb = 11.3 ± 5.9 h when using Sco X-1 and 1H 16267-273, respectively, as reference sources. It seems to us that the method for estimating the orbital periods of low-mass X-ray binaries using the correlation P orb ∝ 1/ν br may turn out to be very promising, especially for persistent low-luminosity X-ray binaries.  相似文献

We present analysis of flare process as "phase transition" phenomena caused by frustration of current percolation in turbulent current sheet. We show that numerous plasma instabilities in the sheet will form random resistors network with "bad resistors"-turbulent domains and "good resistors"-normal plasma domains. We show that current percolation in random inhomogeneous turbulent current sheet like to another percolated systems is able to produce phase transition with drastic change of global properties of system as whole (conductivity, heat-conductivity, elasticity,) on the threshold value of critical density of "bad" elements (p= p c ). Another property of solar flares, what may be understood on the base of percolation approach is observed universal power dependence of frequency of flares and microflares (elementary events-spikes) on their amplitude: N W W k . It may be explained as natural sequence of universal power dependence of clusters' masses in percolated systems on their sizes. The slope of resulted spectra is determined by the fractal dimension of clusters and depends on feedback between current propagation and turbulence generation. We show that percolation approach allow to explain phenomena of preflare bursts-precursors observed in radio and hard X-ray. It may be understood as results of pre-catastrophic lose of elasticity of system to small disturbance on the percolation threshold, with formation of short life nuclear of "new phase". This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Recent VLBA observation indicates the existence of an elongated (jet) structure in the compact radio source Sgr A*. This is hard to explain in the context of advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) model for this source. On the other hand, the mass accretion rate favoured by ADAF is 10–20 times smaller than that favoured by the hydrodynamical simulation based on Bondi capture. If the latter were adopted, the predicted radio flux would significantly exceed the observation. A similar situation exists in the case of nearby giant ellipticals, where the canonical ADAF model – the widely assumed standard model for these sources – also significantly overpredicts the radio flux. Based on these facts, in this paper we propose a truncated ADAF model for Sgr A* and three ellipticals M87, NGC 4649 and NGC 4636. We assume that the accretion disc is truncated at a certain radius R tr within which the jet forms by extracting the energy of the disc. The radio flux is greatly suppressed owing to the radiative truncation of the disc and the fits to the observational data are excellent. For example, for Sgr A*, the model fits the observational spectrum very well from radio including the 'excess' below the break frequency to hard X-ray under a high accretion rate near the simulation value, and the predicted size-frequency relationship is also in excellent agreement with the observation; for M87, the predicted upper limit of the jet location is 24 R g, in excellent agreement with the observational result that the jet is formed on scales smaller than 30 R g, and the ≈20 per cent variability at ∼1 keV – which is hard to explain in another model that succeeded in explaining the low radio flux of M87 – is also marginally interpreted. The success of the model supplies possible evidence for the disc rather than the hole origin for the powering of jets.  相似文献

The spectral energy distribution of the Seyfert type-2 galaxy Mk 348 is analyzed based on IUE observations and published data. It is found that most of the optical and near-IR flux comes from the underlying galaxy bulge population. The rest of the emission can be fitted by a power law of the formF v v with =0.6. In order to explain the X-ray emission this power law requires either a change of slope or a cutoff before 2 keV. The possibility that the emission originates in a young star cluster is discussed and a simple population synthesis model for the continuum of the galaxy is presented.

Past analyses of flare hard X-ray (HXR) spectra have largely ignored the effect of nonuniform ionization along the electron paths in the thick-target model, though it is very significant for well-resolved spectra. The inverse problem (photon spectrum to electron injection spectrum F 0(E 0)) is disturbingly non-unique. However, we show that it is relatively simple to allow for the effect in forward fitting of parametric models of F 0(E 0)) and provide an expression to evaluate it for the usual single power-law form of F 0(E 0)).The expression involves the column depth N * of the transition region in the flare loop as one of the parameters so data fitting can enable derivation of N * (and its evaporative evolution) as part of the fitting procedure. The fit to RHESSI data on four flares for a single power law F 0(E 0)) is much improved when ionization structure is included compared to when the usual fully ionized approximation is used. This removes the need, in these events at least, to invoke broken power laws, or other forms, of the acceleration spectrum F 0(E 0)) to explain the observed photon spectrum  相似文献

Claims continue to be made that detector selection effects can explain the deviation of the gamma-ray burst brightness distributions from the -3/2 power law expected for homogeneous burst sources. However, these effects are insufficient to explain the BATSE observations. The BATSE sensitivity threshold does vary with time, independent of the burst brightness; however, a homogeneous distribution of standard candle sources would still produce a -3/2 power law. The variation in the threshold does affect inhomogeneous source models. As an example, the effect of a time-varyingC min on theC max/C min distribution of an extended Galactic halo model is shown here. To fit the BATSEC max/C min distribution including a varyingC min requires a larger observing distance (relative to the scale-height of the halo) than for a constantC min; however, the observations can still be fit using the halo models.  相似文献

We propose a simplified model of outflow/jet driven by the Blandford–Payne (BP) process from advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAF) and derive the expressions of the BP power and disk luminosity based on the conservation laws of mass, angular momentum and energy. We fit the 2–10 keV luminosity and kinetic power of 15 active galactic nucleus (AGNs) of sub-Eddington luminosity. It is found that there exists an anti-correlation between the accretion rate and the advection parameter, which could be used to explain the correlation between Eddington-scaled kinetic power and bolometric luminosity of the 15 samples. In addition, the Ledlow–Owen relation for FR I/II dichotomy is re-expressed in a parameter space consisting of logarithm of dimensionless accretion rate versus that of the BH mass. It turns out that the FR I/II dichotomy is determined mainly by the dimensionless accretion rate, being insensitive to the BH mass. And the dividing accretion rate is less than the critical accretion rate for ADAFs, suggesting that FR I sources are all in the ADAF state.  相似文献

We present the results of a detailed analysis of RXTE observations of classω (Klein-Woltet al. 2002) which show an unusual state transition between high-soft and low-soft states in the Galactic microquasar GRS 1915 + 105. Out of about 600 pointed RXTE observations, the source was found to exhibit such state transition only on 16 occasions. An examination of the RXTE/ASM data in conjunction with the pointed observations reveals that these events appeared as a series of quasi-regular dips in two stretches of long duration (about 20 days during each occasion) when hard X-ray and radio flux were very low. The X-ray light curve and colour-colour diagram of the source during these observations are found to be different from any reported so far. The duration of these dips is found to be of the order of a few tens of seconds with a repetition time of a few hundred seconds. The transition between these dips and non-dips which differ in intensity by a factor of ∼ 3.5, is observed to be very fast (∼ a few seconds). It is observed that the low-frequency narrow QPOs are absent in the power density spectrum (PDS) of the dip and non-dip regions of classω and the PDS is a power law in the 0.1–10 Hz frequency range. There is a remarkable similarity in the spectral and timing properties of the source during the dip and non-dip regions in this set of observations. These properties of the source are distinctly different from those seen in the observations of other classes. This indicates that the basic accretion disk structure during both dip and non-dip regions of classω is similar, but differ only in intensity. To explain these observations, we invoke a model in which the viscosity is very close to critical viscosity and the shock wave is weak or absent.  相似文献

We have used Yohkoh and GOES X-ray observations to investigate flares with a long rising phase. We have found that a characteristic feature of such flares is a long time interval, Δ t ≥ 20 min, between the temperature maximum and the maximum of the emission measure. We have carried out detailed analysis for 10 limb flares of this type. Time variation of the heating function, EH(t), has been determined for their loop-top X-ray kernels. The time variation of EH(t), together with the temperature–density diagnostic diagrams, have been used to explain the large value of the time interval, Δ t. The main point is that for these flares the heating function EH(t) decreases so slowly after the temperature maximum, that for the long time, Δ t, the energy flux reaching flare foot points is sufficient to maintain significant chromospheric evaporation. Investigation of the flare evolution in the temperature–density diagnostic diagrams allowed us to work out a new method of determination of the density for flare kernels. This method can be applied to all the kernels for which their altitudes can be estimated. The advantage of this method is that for the density determination it is not necessary to assume what is the extension of the emitting plasma along the line of sight.  相似文献

The multi-wavelength analysis is performed on a flare on September 9, 2002 with data of Owens Valley Solar Arrays (OVSA), Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO), Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI), and Extreme UV Imager Telescope (EIT), and The Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on board of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The radio sources at 4.8 and 6.2 GHz located in the intersection of two flaring loops at 195 of SOHO/EIT respectively with two dipole magnetic fields of SOHO/MDI, in which one EIT loop was coincident with an X-ray loop of RHESSI at 12–25 keV, and two Hαbright kernels a1 and a2 of BBSO, respectively at the two footpoints of this loop; the second EIT loop connected another two Hαkernels b1 and b2 and radio sources at 7.8 and 8.2 GHz of OVSA. The maximum phase of microwave bursts was evidently later than that of hard X-ray bursts and Hαkernels a1 and a2, but consistent with that of Hαkernels b1 and b2. Moreover, the flare may be triggered by the interaction of the two flaring loops, which is suggested by the cross-correlation of radio, optical, and X-ray light curves of a common quasi-periodic oscillation in the rising phase, as well as two peaks at about 7 and 9 GHz of the microwave spectra at the peak times of the oscillation, while the bi-directional time delays at two reversal frequencies respectively at 7.8 and 9.4 GHz (similar to the peak frequencies of the microwave spectra) may indicate two reconnection sites at different coronal levels. The microwave and hard X-ray footpoint sources located in different EUV and optical loops may be explained by different magnetic field strength and the pitch angle distribution of nonthermal electrons in these two loops.  相似文献

Since solar magnetic fields are inhomogeneous, the averaging of Stokes parameter I within the entrance slit of the magnetograph is different from averaging Stokes Q0 and V, because the former contains also light from non-magnetic, while the latter only contain light from magnetic regions. If the magnetographic calibration functions are calculated for homogeneous magnetic fields, errors arise, when they are used to reduce measurements of inhomogeneous fields. Therefore, we propose to use the line-ratio method to transform magnetographic measurements into the parameters of the magnetic vector field. The Q ratios and the V ratios of two carefully selected lines are free from errors of this kind. This is also the case for the Q ratios in line core and line wings in single-line magnetographs. An iterative method is presented to calculate the magnetic field parameters using the corresponding new calibration functions. An important advantage is, that the influence of scattered light in sunspots is also eliminated in a good approximation and the filling factor in plages can be estimated. This method is now used to determine magnetic vector fields in plages and sunspots of active regions with a new double-vector magnetograph.  相似文献

We study the magnetorotational instability in cylindrical Taylor‐Couette flow, with the (vertically unbounded) cylinders taken to be perfect conductors, and with externally imposed spiral magnetic fields. The azimuthal component of this field is generated by an axial current inside the inner cylinder, and may be slightly stronger than the axial field. We obtain an instability beyond the Rayleigh line, for Reynolds numbers of order 1000 and Hartmann numbers of order 10, and independent of the (small) magnetic Prandtl number. For experiments with Rout = 2Rin = 10 cm and Ωout = 0.27 Ωin, the instability appears for liquid sodium for axial fields of ∼20 Gauss and axial currents of ∼1200 A. For gallium the numbers are ∼50 Gauss and ∼3200 A. The vertical cell size is about twice the cell size known for nonmagnetic experiments. (© 2005 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

The inner regions of the circumstellar disk around Pictoris might be dust-free due to a possible planet which may have cleared up dust particles. We present a new observational technique based on the use of an anti-blooming CCD in order to directly image this zone. The structure of the disk is revealed down to 2 arcsec from the star (30 AU). We show that the Pic disk brightness is neutral inV, R, andI C , but drops down when going inward inB, possibly related to a change in the dust composition. Also, a slight disk asymmetry is present but inverted from the outer to the inner zones.Paper presented at the Conference onPlanetary Systems: Formation, Evolution, and Detection held 7–10 December, 1992 at CalTech, Pasadena, California, U.S.A.  相似文献

This paper presents a new Doppler spectral type of VHP (42 MHz) radio auroral backscatter. This spectrum, which has a double-peaked structure, was observed repeatedly during the morning sector of an exceptionally strong event (Ap = 48) and is due to irregularities moving northwards with quite different velocities. The stronger spectral component, which has a smaller Doppler shift, is centred in frequency at ~?130 Hz, corresponding to the ion-acoustic velocity range in the medium; the weak component, which has a greater frequency shift, usually is centred at about ?300 Hz (~ 1050 m s?1). Evidence based on spectral analysis of sequential short time sequences shows that the spectral power alternates in time between the two distinct frequency bands where the peaks are located, suggesting that the double-peaked spectrum may result from two competing processes which cannot operate simultaneously. The possibility exists that the theoretical model proposed by Sato (1977), which predicts two different quasi-linear stabilization mechanisms for the two-stream instability, could explain the observed double-peaked spectral type.  相似文献

Pulsation of the Sun with a period of P0 ≈ 160 min discovered about two decades ago, is still waiting explanation. In view of the hypothesis about its cosmological origin, and attempting to find signature of this P0 periodicity among other (short-period variable) stars, the pulsation frequencies of δ Sct stars are subjected to specific analysis. With a confidence level ≈ 3.8σ it is found that the frequency v0 = P0−1 ≈ 104 m̈Hz, within the error limits, appears indeed to be the most “resonant” one for the total sample of 318 pulsating stars of δ Sct type (the most commensurable, or “synchronizing”, period for all these stars occurs to be 162 ± 4 min). We conjecture that a) the P0 oscillation might be connected with periodic fluctuations of gravity field (metrics), and b) the primary excitation mechanism of pulsations of δ Sct stars, reffected by this “ubiquitous” P0 resonance, must be attributed perhaps to superfast rotation of their inner cores (their rates tend to be in near-resonance with the “universal” v0 frequency). The arguments are given favouring a cosmoogical nature of the P0 oscillation.  相似文献

Recent accelerator data based parameterization of the inclusive cross section (cs) forπ0 production in hadronic collisions and an explicit incorporation of the finiteness of the relevant projectile hadron spectrum suggest a significant steepening in the spectrum (by as much as 0.4 in the spectral index) of the secondaryγ-ray towards the end of the spectrum. We emphasize here that this spectral steepening in conjunction with the possibility that in the bright X-ray binaries the maximum energy to which theγ-ray producing progenitor protons may be accelerated is only ∼ l0 PeV, may imply an effective efficiency forγ-ray production,ε, as reckoned by the PeV arrays, one or two orders smaller than the previous estimates. To explain the genesis of a given PeV photon flux from an X-ray binary, one, therefore, has to. accordingly consider a much higher value of the progenitor proton beam luminosity,L p . This requirement may raise further questions regarding the actual genesis of PeVγ-rays in X-ray binaries, or alternatively, on the veracity of the high values of the PeV photon fluxes reported by earlier experiments.  相似文献

We investigate the relation between black hole mass, M bh, and jet power, Q jet, for a sample of BL Lacs and radio quasars. We find that BL Lacs are separated from radio quasars by the FR I/II dividing line in M bhQ jet plane, which strongly supports the unification scheme of FR I/BL Lac and FR II/radio quasar. The Eddington ratio distribution of BL Lacs and radio quasars exhibits a bimodal nature with a rough division at L bol/L Edd~0.01, which imply that they may have different accretion modes. We calculate the jet power extracted from advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), and find that it requires dimensionless angular momentum of black hole j???0.9???0.99 to reproduce the dividing line between FR I/II or BL Lac/radio quasar if dimensionless accretion rate $\dot{m}=0.01$ is adopted, which is required by the above bimodal distribution of Eddington ratios. Our results suggest that black holes in radio galaxies are rapidly spinning.  相似文献
