The objective of this study was to investigate the immediate and carryover effects of imposing two post-grazing sward heights (PGSH) for varying duration during early lactation on sward characteristics and dairy cow production. The experiment was a randomised block design with a 2×2 factorial arrangement of treatments. A total of 80 spring-calving (mean calving date – 6 February) dairy cows were randomly assigned, pre-calving, to one of the two (n=40) PGSH treatments – S (2.7 cm) and M (3.5 cm) – from 13 February to 18 March, 2012 (P1). For the subsequent 5-week period (P2: 19 March to 22 April, 2012), half the animals from each P1 treatment remained on their treatment, whereas the other half of the animals switched to the opposing treatment. Following P2, all cows were managed similarly for the remainder of the lactation (P3: 23 April to 4 November, 2012) to measure the carryover effect. Milk production, BW and body condition score were measured weekly, and grass dry matter intake (GDMI) was measured on four occasions – approximately weeks 5, 10, 15 and 20 of lactation. Sward utilisation (above 2.7 cm; P1 and P2) was significantly improved by reducing the PGSH from 3.5 (0.83) to 2.7 cm (0.96). There was no effect of PGSH on cumulative annual grass dry matter (DM) production (15.3 t DM/ha). Grazing to 2.7 cm reduced GDMI by 1.7 and 0.8 kg DM/cow in P1 and P2, respectively, when compared with 3.5 cm (13.3 and 14.0 kg/cow per day, respectively). Cows grazing to 2.7 cm for both P1 and P2 (SS) tended to have reduced cumulative 10-week milk yield (−105 kg) and milk solids yield (−9 kg) when compared with cows grazing to 3.5 cm for both periods (MM; 1608 and 128 kg/cow, respectively). Treatments that alternated PGSH at the end of P1, SM and MS had intermediate results. There was no interaction between P1 and P2 treatments. There was also no carryover effect of early lactation grazing regime on milk and milk solids production in P3, given the reduction in early lactation milk yield. The results indicate that the diet of dairy cows should not be restricted by imposing a severe PGSH for all of the first 10 weeks of lactation, cows should graze to 3.5 cm for at least 5 of these weeks.  相似文献

The aim of this study was of establishing a correlation between endogenous LH secretion and the magnitude of the LH response to challenges with GnRH and the opioid antagonist naloxone during lactation, and between these characteristics and LH secretion and follicular development after weaning. Sows (n = 9) were sampled for 6 h at day 2 post-partum, for 12 h on day 26 of lactation and for 6 h immediately after weaning at day 27 of lactation. Four hours after the beginning of sampling at day 26 of lactation all sows were injected with 2 mg/kg i.v. of naloxone hydrochloride and 5 h later with 100 microg/sow of GnRH. Follicular development was studied in all sows at slaughter the day after weaning. There was an effect of time (sampling period; P < 0.001) on mean plasma LH, with an increase (P < 0.05) in LH the day after weaning compared to mean LH concentrations during lactation. Naloxone and GnRH treatment both increased (P < 0.05) mean LH concentrations. A positive relationship (r = 0.58, P < 0.01) between mean plasma LH after GnRH and after weaning was established. Although there were differences (P < 0.001) between sows in follicular fluid volume, there were no correlations between mean follicular fluid volume and mean LH concentrations after GnRH or after weaning. These data indicate that the LH response to GnRH during late lactation could be useful predictor of LH activity after weaning. However, none of the measures of endogenous or induced LH secretion were associated with differences in ovarian follicular size after weaning. Direct evidence is therefore still needed for a functional link between differences in LH in lactation and differences in fertility after weaning.  相似文献

Background

In sheep dairy production, total lactation performance, and length of lactation of lactation are of economic significance. A more persistent lactation has been associated with improved udder health. An extended lactation is defined by a longer period of milkability. This study is the first investigation to examine the presence of quantitative trait loci (QTL) for extended lactation and lactation persistency in sheep.

Methods

An (Awassi × Merino) × Merino single-sire backcross family with 172 ewes was used to map QTL for lactation persistency and extended lactation traits on a framework map of 189 loci across all autosomes. The Wood model was fitted to data from multiple lactations to estimate parameters of ovine lactation curves, and these estimates were used to derive measures of lactation persistency and extended lactation traits of milk, protein, fat, lactose, useful yield, and somatic cell score. These derived traits were subjected to QTL analyses using maximum likelihood estimation and regression analysis.

Results

Overall, one highly significant (LOD > 3.0), four significant (2.0 < LOD < 3.0) and five suggestive (1.7 < LOD < 2.0) QTL were detected across all traits in common by both mapping methods. One additional suggestive QTL was identified using maximum likelihood estimation, and four suggestive (0.01 < P < 0.05) and two significant (P < 0.01) QTL using the regression approach only. All detected QTL had effect sizes in the range of 0.48 to 0.64 SD, corresponding to QTL heritabilities of 3.1 to 8.9%. The comparison of the detected QTL with results in cattle showed conserved linkage regions. Most of the QTL identified for lactation persistency and extended lactation did not coincide. This suggests that persistency and extended lactation for the same as well as different milk yield and component traits are not controlled by the same genes.

Conclusion

This study identified ten novel QTL for lactation persistency and extended lactation in sheep, but results suggest that lactation persistency and extended lactation do not have a major gene in common. These results provide a basis for further validation in extended families and other breeds as well as targeting regions for genome-wide association mapping using high-density SNP arrays.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to describe the progesterone profile, physiological response, milk composition, and blood chemistry at the early stage (DIM 30-90 days) of lactation (E1:30-50; E2:50-70; E3:70-90 days) in Baladi goats under Egyptian conditions. The serum progesterone level was significantly reduced with the progress of the early lactation period to reach the least concentration (0.24 ng/ml) at the E3 stage of lactation (P=0.001). The daily milk yield was significantly increased with the progress of the lactation to reach the peak at the E2 stage of lactation (P=0.015). The percentage of milk fat was significantly decreased with the progress of the early lactation period (P=0.032). However, the percentages of total solids and SNF were significantly increased in E2 and E3 stages when compared with the E1 stage (P=0.001 and 0.018, respectively). The serum glucose and total antioxidant capacity were considerably reduced with the progress of the lactation period (P=0.047 and 0.039, respectively). In conclusion, Baladi goats showed a decreased serum progesterone level with the progress of the early lactation period and produce milk with a relatively stable protein and lactose contents. Furthermore, Baladi does able to maintain the stability of most blood biochemical parameters during such period.  相似文献

Poor detection of estrus, still a major problem in the dairy industry, has prompted the development of electronic estrous detection technologies. One of the features of estrous behavior is a marked increase in walking activity. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the effects of various management factors on walking activity increase at estrus, and the relationship between this trait and fertility. Data from 5883 artificial inseminations (AI) conducted in two high-producing dairy herds were analyzed. Detection of estrus was performed using a pedometer system. Of the total AI investigated, 2072 (35.2%) resulted in pregnancy. The following data were recorded for each animal at AI: herd, lactation number, milk production (average for the 3 days prior to AI), lactation stage (early, mid, and late lactation), previous estrous synchronization (cloprostenol or progesterone releasing intravaginal device [PRID] for animals showing estrus within 7 days of treatment), season (warm versus cool period), insemination number following parturition, inseminating bull, inseminator, and pedometer measurements. Variables were screened for associations with walking activity by analysis of variance (ANOVA) through generalized linear model procedures (PROC GLM). Increased parity and milk production, and insemination during the warm period were associated with lower pedometer measurements. No significant effects of the herd, estrous synchronization, and lactation stage were observed. The link between walking activity and fertility was determined by applying logistic regression models. We detected no significant effects of herd, milk production, estrous synchronization, lactation stage, and inseminator on pregnancy rate. A higher lactation and insemination number, and insemination during the warm period were negatively correlated with the pregnancy rate. The likelihood of pregnancy was greater when semen from one of the bulls was used and when physical activity at estrus was increased. Our findings indicate that cow and management factors contribute intensely to walking activity at estrus, and also reveal a close link between increased walking activity and fertility.  相似文献

A new method to estimate residual feed intake (RFI) was recently developed based on a multi-trait random regression model. This approach deals with the dynamic nature of the lactation, which is in contrast with classical linear approaches. However, an issue remains: pooling data across sites and years, which implies dealing with different (and sometimes unknown) diet energy contents. This will be needed for genomic evaluation. In this study, we tested whether merging two individual datasets into a larger one can lead to valuable results in comparison to analysing them on their own with the multi-trait random regression model. Three datasets were defined: the first one with 1 063 lactations, the second one with 205 lactations from a second farm and the third one combining the data of the two first datasets (1 268 lactations). The model was applied to the three datasets to estimate individual RFI as well as variance components and correlations between the four traits included in the model (fat and protein corrected milk production, BW, feed intake and body condition score), and a fixed month-year-farm effect was used to define the contemporary group. The variance components and correlations between animal effects of the four traits were very similar irrespective of the dataset used with correlations higher than 0.94 between the different datasets. The RFI estimates for animals from their single farm only were also very similar (r > 0.95) to the ones computed from the merged dataset (Dataset 3). This highlights that the contemporary group correction in the model adequately accounts for differences between the two feeding environments. The dynamic model can thus be used to produce RFI estimates from merged datasets, at least when animals are raised in similar systems. In addition, the 205 lactations from the second farm were also used to estimate the RFI with a linear approach. The RFI estimated by the two approaches were similar when the considered period was rather short (r = 0.85 for RFI for the first 84 days of lactation) but this correlation weakened as the period length grew (r = 0.77 for RFI for the first 168 days of lactation). This weakening in correlations between the two approaches when increasing the used time-period reflects that only the dynamic model permits the regression coefficients to evolve in line with the physiological changes through the lactation. The results of this study enlarge the possibilities of use for the dynamic RFI model.  相似文献

Test day milk yields of three lactations in Sfakia sheep were analyzed fitting a random regression (RR) model, regressing on orthogonal polynomials of the stage of the lactation period, i.e. days in milk. Univariate (UV) and multivariate (MV) analyses were also performed for four stages of the lactation period, represented by average days in milk, i.e. 15, 45, 70 and 105 days, to compare estimates obtained from RR models with estimates from UV and MV analyses. The total number of test day records were 790, 1314 and 1041 obtained from 214, 342 and 303 ewes in the first, second and third lactation, respectively. Error variances and covariances between regression coefficients were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood. Models were compared using likelihood ratio tests (LRTs). Log likelihoods were not significantly reduced when the rank of the orthogonal Legendre polynomials (LPs) of lactation stage was reduced from 4 to 2 and homogenous variances for lactation stages within lactations were considered. Mean weighted heritability estimates with RR models were 0.19, 0.09 and 0.08 for first, second and third lactation, respectively. The respective estimates obtained from UV analyses were 0.14, 0.12 and 0.08, respectively. Mean permanent environmental variance, as a proportion of the total, was high at all stages and lactations ranging from 0.54 to 0.71. Within lactations, genetic and permanent environmental correlations between lactation stages were in the range from 0.36 to 0.99 and 0.76 to 0.99, respectively. Genetic parameters for additive genetic and permanent environmental effects obtained from RR models were different from those obtained from UV and MV analyses.  相似文献

Asynchronous concurrent lactation (ACL) is an extreme lactation strategy in macropod marsupials including the tammar wallaby, that may hold the key to understanding local control of mammary epithelial cell function. Marsupials have a short gestation and a long lactation consisting of three phases; P2A, P2B and P3, representing early, mid and late lactation respectively and characterised by profound changes in milk composition. A lactating tammar is able to concurrently produce phase 2A and 3 milk from adjacent glands in order to feed a young newborn and an older sibling at heel. Physiological effectors of ACL remain unknown and in this study the extracellular matrix (ECM) is investigated for its role in switching mammary phenotypes between phases of tammar wallaby lactation. Using the level of expression of the genes for the phase specific markers tELP, tWAP, and tLLP-B representing phases 2A, 2B and 3 respectively we show for the first time that tammar wallaby mammary epithelial cells (WallMECs) extracted from P2B acquire P3 phenotype when cultured on P3 ECM. Similarly P2A cells acquire P2B phenotype when cultured on P2B ECM. We further demonstrate that changes in phase phenotype correlate with phase-specific changes in ECM composition. This study shows that progressive changes in ECM composition in individual mammary glands provide a local regulatory mechanism for milk protein gene expression thereby enabling the mammary glands to lactate independently.  相似文献

Grazing pastures to low post-grazing sward heights (PGSH) is a strategy to maximise the quantity of grazed grass in the diet of dairy cows within temperate grass-based systems. Within Irish spring-calving systems, it was hypothesised that grazing swards to very low PGSH would increase herbage availability during early lactation but would reduce dairy cow performance, the effect of which would persist in subsequent lactation performance when compared with cows grazing to a higher PGSH. Seventy-two Holstein–Friesian dairy cows (mean calving date, 12 February) were randomly assigned post-calving across two PGSH treatments (n = 36): 2.7 cm (severe; S1) and 3.5 cm (moderate; M1), which were applied from 10 February to 18 April (period 1; P1). This was followed by a carryover period (period 2; P2) during which cows were randomly reassigned within their P1 treatment across two further PGSH (n = 18): 3.5 cm (severe, SS and MS) and 4.5 cm (moderate, SM and MM) until 30 October. Decreasing PGSH from 3.5 to 2.7 cm significantly decreased milk (−2.3 kg/cow per day), protein (−95 g/day), fat (−143 g/day) and lactose (−109 g/day) yields, milk protein (−1.2 g/kg) and fat (−2.2 g/kg) concentrations and grass dry matter intake (GDMI; −1.7 kg dry matter/cow per day). The severe PGSH was associated with a lower bodyweight (BW) at the end of P1. There was no carryover effect of P1 PGSH on subsequent milk or milk solids yields in P2, but PGSH had a significant carryover effect on milk fat and lactose concentrations. Animals severely restricted at pasture in early spring had a higher BW and slightly higher body condition score in later lactation when compared with M1 animals. During P2, increasing PGSH from 3.5 to 4.5 cm increased milk and milk solids yield as a result of greater GDMI and resulted in higher mean BW and end BW. This study indicates that following a 10-week period of feed restriction, subsequent dairy cow cumulative milk production is unaffected. However, the substantial loss in milk solid yield that occurred during the period of restriction is not recovered.  相似文献

The metabolism and action of insulin and glucagon were investigated in goats during mid lactating (50 days postpartum) and during the dry period. The animals were fed hay and concentrate during lactation (1:1) and only hay during dry period. Pulse doses of unlabelled insulin and glucagon were injected intravenously. The disappearance of insulin from the circulation was faster during lactation than during dry period; the metabolic clearance rate of insulin was significantly increased during lactation. In contrast, the kinetic parameters of glucagon disappearance were very similar during the two periods. Basal plasma hormones (i.e. before hormone injection) were higher during lactation than during dry period; the molar ratio insulin:glucagon was left unchanged. The increase in plasma insulin following glucagon-stimulated hyperglycaemia was similar during the two periods. The ability of insulin to elicit a decrease in blood glucose was markedly impaired during lactation when compared to dry period. In contrast the ability of glucagon to increase blood glucose was slightly improved during lactation. Those endocrine changes could be related to the effect of both lactation and diet.  相似文献

Data from a randomized controlled field study of selective dry cow therapy were used in which 686 cows had been allocated to 2 control groups (sampling only or placebo) or 2 therapy groups. Possible factors from previous lactation were assessed in determining their association with the probability of ‘failure’, designated as a cow milk somatic cell count (CMSCC) of greater than 399000 per ml in geometric mean of several measurements during subsequent lactation. Success cows were those with a CMSCC of less than 200000 per ml. For our analyses, this targeted 187 success cows and 186 failure cows. Therapy was given as a total dose of 400000 IU penicillin and 100 mg neomycin per infected quarter as dry cow preparation once, or as a lactation formula with a total dose of 1.2 million IU penicillin and 1200 mg dihydrostreptomycin per infected quarter during a 1-week period. Significant factors in the predictive model for success included therapy, low level of CMSCC (geometric mean of the 3 last tests) in previous lactation, low level of CMSCC (weighted by daily milk yield mean) in the herd, young cows, and not having had a case of treatment for chronic clinical mastitis. Additional information on the probability of failure in treated and untreated cows can be predicted by number of quarters infected with Staphylococcus aureus approximately 1.5 months before drying off. The models derived are considered for use as tools in selective treatment and culling decisions.  相似文献

1. Mammary blood flow was measured during the lactation period in two low- and two high-yielding dairy goats (peak milk yields approx. 1.5 and 3.6 kg/day respectively), using the ultrasound Doppler principle for determination of blood velocity in both milk veins (subcutaneous abdominal veins) of the animals, and ultrasound scanning for measurement of cross-sectional area of the veins. 2. Milk vein cross-sectional area ranged from 0.11 to 0.38 cm2 in the four goats, with a close to significant (P = 0.06) difference between the veins in the two sides of the animals. Cross-sectional area remained constant during the lactation period. Changes in mammary blood flow was therefore caused by changes in blood velocity. 3. Milk vein blood velocities ranged from 4.4 to 34.7 cm/sec independently of the time of the day, and were of the same magnitude in the two sides of the animals. Except in one goat (P = 0.1), blood velocity decreased significantly (P less than 0.01) with progressing lactation, during which period also milk yield was declining. 4. In the two low-yielding goats, a positive linear relationship (R2 = 0.20) was found between milk yield and milk vein blood velocity, whereas a diminishing exponential relationship (R2 = 0.97) was found in the two high-yielding goats. At a given milk vein blood velocity, high-yielding goats obtained a higher milk yield and also responded to changes in blood velocity (up to approx. 15 cm/sec) with greater increases in milk yield than low-yielding goats.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Differences between production systems based on grazing and browsing vs. use of harvested feedstuffs in confinement largely depend on specific feedstuffs and plants available and being consumed. Low forage nutrient ingestion should have relatively greater impact on tissue mobilization than milk production in early than later periods of lactation, with a transition to proportionally greater change in milk production in late lactation. However, low body condition at kidding would limit tissue energy mobilization and restrict impact of level of nutrient intake to milk yield and, likewise, tissue mobilization would be less with one vs. two or three milkings per day. As lactation advances after freshening, fat and protein levels decrease with increasing milk yield, and when production declines in mid- to late lactation, fat and protein concentrations increase. Milk production generally peaks at a parity of 3 or 4, thereafter declining slowly. Elevated somatic cell count alone in dairy goats is not a valid indication of mammary infection. Extended lactations offer opportunities to minimize or avoid seasonal fluctuations in milk production and lessen production costs. If differences in performance between suckled and machine-milked dairy goats occur, they may be restricted to or of greater magnitude during the suckling period compared with post-weaning, and differences in milk yield will either be absent or less with one kid compared with greater litter sizes. The magnitude of effects of milking frequency on milk yield is less for goats of low vs. high production potential and with low vs. high diet quality. Likewise, the effect of milking frequency is greater in early and mid-lactation when yield is higher than in late lactation, along with a shorter period of peak production with one vs. two daily milkings. Physical form of the diet can affect production and composition of goat milk, although effects appear of smaller magnitude than in dairy cattle. When tissue is mobilized to support milk production in early lactation, levels of C18:0 and C18:1 cis in milk increase and levels of medium-chain fatty acids decline. Effects of elevated levels of dietary fatty acids on specific long-chain fatty acids in milk and milk products vary with the fatty acid profile of fat sources used.  相似文献

This study aimed to compare three woodchip out-wintering pad (OWP) designs, and indoor cubicle housing with regard to cow dirtiness scores during the winter housing period, and udder health during both the winter period and the following lactation, for spring-calving dairy cows. The treatments were: an uncovered (UP) and covered (CP) OWP with a concrete feed apron; an uncovered OWP with self-feed silage pit provided directly on the woodchips (SP); and indoor cubicle housing (IC). Data were compared during 2 years: year 1 was a case study while year 2 was an experimental study. In year 1, treatments were UP (space allowance = 12 m2/cow), CP (6 m2/cow) and IC. In year 2, all three OWP designs (12 m2/cow) were compared with IC. Animals were assigned to treatments at the end of lactation in the autumn, and remained there while dry until calving the following spring. Subsequently, all cows were at pasture during lactation. Outcome measures for analysis were cow dirtiness score, somatic cell score (SCS) and incidence of clinical mastitis during the dry period and during lactation. Quarter milk samples were also taken at drying off, calving and 3 weeks post partum both years, and at approximately 113 days in milk in year 2. Samples were analysed for presence of mastitis-causing agents and SCS was determined. Sub-clinical mastitis was diagnosed when cows had an SCS greater than 200 000, or California mastitis test greater than 1 in at least one quarter. In year 1, cows in CP were dirtier than cows in the other two treatments. These animals also had the highest SCS during lactation and tended to have more mastitis-causing agents isolated from quarter milk samples. In year 2, when all cows were stocked at the same density, cows in the sheltered OWP (i.e. CP) had similar dirtiness scores to cows in cubicles and significantly lower dirtiness scores than cows in the unsheltered OWP designs, i.e. UP and SP. However, there were no effects on SCS or quarter sample results. Cleaning of OWP's stocked at 12 m2/cow reduced cow dirtiness scores. However, cleaning of CP in year 1 when cows were stocked at 6 m2/cow had no effect on dirtiness scores. We conclude that dry cows stocked at 12 m2/cow on OWP's are unlikely to have udder health problems in the subsequent lactation. Furthermore, provision of shelter and cleaning of the woodchips are management factors that help to keep cows clean on OWP's.  相似文献

We investigated milk nutrient composition from three Asian elephant cows over the first 3 years of lactation, including two consecutive lactations in one cow. Body mass gain is presented for three calves during the first year. Milk samples (n = 74) were analyzed for dry matter (DM), fat, crude protein (CP), sugar, ash, calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K); gross energy (GE) was calculated. Concentrations of most nutrients changed over lactation: DM, fat, CP, Ca, P, and GE were positively correlated to calf age; sugar was negatively correlated to calf age. GE doubled between birth (1 kcal/g) and 2 years of age (2 kcal/g). After accounting for calf age, GE, fat, Ca, and P concentrations differed among the cows. Milk composition also differed between two lactations from the same cow. When milk nutrients were expressed on a mg per kcal basis, the pattern changes: CP, Ca, and P remained relatively constant over lactation on a per energy basis. Calf mass quadrupled over the first year of life; mass gain was linear at 0.9 kg/day. Asian elephant milk composition is variable, both across lactations and between cows, complicating efforts to determine representative values for comparative studies and for the formulation of elephant milk formulas. The fact that CP, Ca, and P were all relatively constant when expressed on a per energy basis may be of biological significance. The increase in nutrient density over lactation undoubtedly limits maternal water loss, reducing the volume of milk necessary to support the calf. Effects of a dietary lipid supplement containing calcium salts of fatty acids and methionine hydroxy analogue on plasma prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha) metabolite (PGFM) and milk fatty acid profiles were examined in 40 late lactation, nonpregnant, Holstein-Friesian cows for a period of 70 days. Effects on milk production, milk composition, and blood metabolites were also examined. Cows were paired on the basis of lactation number (first lactation, n = 8; second lactation, n = 32) and randomly assigned from within pairs to one of two dietary treatments: unsupplemented control (C) or 400 g per cow per day of the lipid supplement (S). Cows receiving the supplement had higher (P < 0.05) total milk production, total fat production (kg), and total lactose production (kg). Plasma cholesterol was significantly higher (P < 0.01) after 30 days of treatment in cows receiving the supplement. Cows receiving the supplement had lower (P < 0.01) concentrations of short chain milk fatty acids (C4:0 to C14:1) and higher concentrations of long chain fatty acids (C18:1 and C18:2; P < 0.01) than control animals. Oxytocin-induced prostaglandin release on Day 16 postovulation was increased (P < 0.01) in cows receiving the supplement. In conclusion, supplementation with calcium salts of fatty acids and methionine hydroxy analogue significantly increased milk yield and plasma PGFM.  相似文献

In two consecutive summers, 21 and 18 cows, respectively, were monitored for blood parameters and milk yield, to assess their variation according to the level of heat stress at different stages of lactation. During both years, the cows were monitored according to their lactation phase (early, mid-, and late) at the beginning of the summer. Climatic conditions were described through the temperature humidity index. Cows were monitored for breathing rate, rectal temperature, blood metabolites and enzymes, and milk yield. In the first year, two hotter periods were identified, with more severe conditions in the second one, when cows had rectal temperatures higher than 40°C. In the second year, only one hotter period was identified, with a heat stress comparable to that of the first period of the first year. Milk yield declined during the hotter period; in both years, a higher reduction in milk yield was recorded for cows in the mid-stage of lactation. The decrease in plasma glucose during the hotter period was evident in both years. Plasma cholesterol also decreased in those periods. The reduction in plasma ALP activity in the hotter period of both years confirmed the role of this enzyme as a quick and reliable heat-stress blood marker.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of supplemental chromium as chromium-L-methionine (Cr-Met) on productive and reproductive performances and some metabolic parameters in late gestation and early lactation of dairy cows. Sixty multiparous Holstein dairy cows according to prior lactation, parity, body mass (682?±?33?kg), and expected calving date were divided equally (30 cows/treatment) and were randomly allocated to one of the two groups. One group received basal diet without Cr (control group) and another group received Cr-Met supplement added at manufacturer's recommended level (8?mg of "Cr"/head per day) from 21?days before expected calving date until 21?days of lactation. Supplemental Cr tended to increase milk yield (P?=?0.08) while percentage of lactose and lactose yield increased (P??0.05). Percentage of cyclic cows at 36?days postpartum and estrous behavior before AI was higher in the supplemented group.  相似文献

In a retrospective study, based on data from the national litter recording system, farrowing rate and litter size of sows served (inseminated or mated) during the lactation period (n = 574) or after a lactation period shorter than 28 days (n = 14,219) were analysed. The results were compared with the corresponding figures for sows with lactation length between 28 and 35 days and weaning to first service interval of 4 or 5 days (reference group; n = 41,741). The farrowing rate of the reference group was 80.9% and subsequent litter size was 13.7 total piglets born. Among sows served prior to weaning, the farrowing rates and litter sizes were significantly lower for those served earlier than 22 days post-farrowing compared to those served later (P < 0.05). Shorter lactations than 28 days and service within 10 days post-weaning led to lower farrowing rates than in the reference group (P < 0.01). Significant differences were seen after different lactation lengths. After correction for weaning to service interval, preceding litter size weaned, parity, breed and the interaction between parity and breed, litter size was significantly and positively associated with the preceding lactation length. The study shows that service within the first 3 weeks post-farrowing results in reduced reproductive performance.  相似文献
