Ultrasonic fatigue tests of TC4 titanium alloy equiaxed I, II and bimodal I, II obtained by different forging processes were carried out in the range from 105 to 109 cycles using 20 kHz three-point bending. The results showed that the S-N curves had different shapes, there was no traditional fatigue limit, and the bimodal I had the best comprehensive fatigue performance. The fracture morphology was analyzed by SEM, and it was found that the fatigue cracks originated from the surface or subsurface facets, showing a transgranular quasi-cleavage fracture mechanism. EDS analysis showed that the facets were formed by the cleavage of primary α grains, and the fatigue cracks originated from the primary α grain preferred textures, rather than the primary α grain clusters. From the microstructure perspective, the reasons for better equiaxed high-cycle-fatigue properties and better bimodal ultra-high-cycle-fatigue properties were analyzed. The bimodal I fatigue life prediction based on energy was also completed, and the prediction curve was basically consistent with the experimental data.  相似文献

The effects of stress ratio (R), loading condition, and MnS inclusion on the fatigue behavior of a medium-carbon pearlitic wheel-steel were investigated by a combination of rotating (frequency of 52.5 Hz, 103–108) bending and ultrasonic (frequency of 20 kHz, 5 × 104–109) axial cycling tests in high-cycle and very-high-cycle regimes. All the S-N curves present horizontal asymptotic shapes and have clear fatigue limits. The fatigue limits (260–270 MPa) for R = −1 obtained by ultrasonic test are almost 140–150 MPa lower than that (400–410 MPa) obtained by rotating bending, and the limit values of R = 0.3 are almost in the range of 195–205 MPa. For rotating bending, the fatigue fractures were originated from the surface matrix of the specimen. Whereas for ultrasonic fatigue, both surface and interior crack initiation occurred, and cracks were all initiated from MnS inclusions regardless of stress ratios. The finite element method was employed to study the influence of MnS inclusions on crack initiation and propagation. The results show that high stress concentrates on the sides of the elliptical MnS inclusion rather than the tip of the inclusion.  相似文献

In this study, the high temperature erosion mechanisms and damage characteristics of a boronized coating have been systematically studied by employing an improved high-temperature accelerated erosion test bench and impact contact theory analyses. Within the scope of the experimental parameters, the erosion rate of the boronized coating under the same erosion conditions was observed to be only one half to one-twelfth of the erosion rate of the substrate. Furthermore, the boronized coating was noted to be less sensitive to the speed of the erosion particles than the plastic substrate, thus, indicating superior and more stable erosion resistance than the base material. The boronized coating exhibited typical brittle fracture characteristics under impact by the high-speed particles. When the particle impact normal stress exceeded the critical stress for crack propagation owing to the coating defects, the surface and subsurface layers of the coating initially formed horizontal and vertical micro-cracks, followed by their gradual expansion and intersection. After destabilization, the brittle coating material was peeled layer-by-layer from the surface of the test piece. At the same incident speed, as the particle size was increased from 65 μm to 226 μm and 336 μm, the size (width) of the erosion cracks on the coating surface increased from 1 μm to 30 μm and 100 μm respectively. Correspondingly, the erosion damage thickness of the coating was enhanced from 15 μm to 50 μm and 100 μm. In the case of the quartz sand particle size exceeding 300 μm, the dual-phase boronized coating did not provide effective protection to the substrate. Furthermore, based on the elastoplastic fracture theory, a prediction model for the erosion weight loss of the boronized coatings within the effective thickness range has been proposed in this study.  相似文献

The use of joints fabricated from dissimilar titanium alloys allows the design of structures with local properties tailored to different service requirements. To develop welded structures for aerospace applications, particularly under critical loading, an understanding of the fatigue behavior is crucial, but remains limited, especially for solid-state technologies such as linear friction welding (LFW). This paper presents the fatigue behavior of dissimilar titanium alloys, Ti–6Al–4V (Ti64) and Ti–6Al–2Sn–4Zr–2Mo–0.1Si (Ti6242), joined by LFW with the aim of characterizing the stress versus number of cycles to failure (S-N) curves in both the low- and high-cycle fatigue regimes. Prior to fatigue testing, metallurgical characterization of the dissimilar alloy welds indicated softening in the heat-affected zone due to the retention of metastable β, and the typical practice of stress relief annealing (SRA) for alleviating the residual stresses was effective also in transforming the metastable β to equilibrated levels of α + β phases and recovering the hardness. Thus, the dissimilar alloy joints were fatigue-tested in the SRA (750 °C for 2 h) condition and their low- and high-cycle fatigue behaviors were compared to those of the Ti64 and Ti6242 base metals (BMs). The low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior of the dissimilar Ti6242–Ti64 linear friction welds was characterized by relatively high maximum stress values (~ 900 to 1100 MPa) and, in the high-cycle fatigue (HCF) regime, the fatigue limit of 450 MPa at 107 cycles was just slightly higher than that of the Ti6242 BM (434 MPa) and the Ti64 BM (445 MPa). Fatigue failure of the dissimilar titanium alloy welds in the low-cycle and high-cycle regimes occurred, respectively, on the Ti64 and Ti6242 sides, roughly 3 ± 1 mm away from the weld center, and the transitioning was reasoned based on the microstructural characteristics of the BMs.  相似文献

Accurate knowledge of the plastic zone of fatigue cracks is a very direct and effective way to quantify the damage of components subjected to cyclic loads. In this work, we propose an ultra-fine experimental characterisation of the plastic zone based on Vickers micro-indentations. The methodology is applied to different compact tension (CT) specimens made of aluminium alloy 2024-T351 subjected to increasing stress intensity factors. The experimental work and sensitivity analysis showed that polishing the surface to #3 μm surface finish and applying a 25 g-force load for 15 s produced the best results in terms of resolution and quality of the data. The methodology allowed the size and shape of both the cyclic and the monotonic plastic zones to be visualised through 2D contour maps. Comparison with Westergaard’s analytical model indicates that the methodology, in general, overestimates the plastic zone. Comparison with S355 low carbon steel suggests that the methodology works best for alloys exhibiting a high strain hardening ratio.  相似文献

This study investigates the very-high-cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior at elevated temperature (650 °C) of the Inconel 718 alloy fabricated by selective laser melting (SLM). The results are compared with those of the wrought alloy. Large columnar grain with a cellular structure in the grain interior and Laves/δ phases precipitated along the grain boundaries were exhibited in the SLM alloy, while fine equiaxed grains were present in the wrought alloy. The elevated temperature had a minor effect on the fatigue resistance in the regime below 108 cycles for the SLM alloy but significantly reduced the fatigue strength in the VHCF regime above 108 cycles. Both the SLM and wrought specimens exhibited similar fatigue resistance in the fatigue life regime of fewer than 107–108 cycles at elevated temperature, and the surface initiation mechanism was dominant in both alloys. In a VHCF regime above 107–108 cycles at elevated temperature, the wrought material exhibited slightly better fatigue resistance than the SLM alloy. All fatigue cracks are initiated from the internal defects or the microstructure discontinuities. The precipitation of Laves and δ phases is examined after fatigue tests at high temperatures, and the effect of microstructure on the formation and the propagation of the microstructural small cracks is also discussed.  相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of cyclic loading on zirconia bar-shaped specimens after being subjected to three different surface treatments: particle abrasion with either 50 μm or 110 μm alumina and grinding with diamond points, while polished specimens served as a control. Statistical analysis revealed significant reduction (38-67%) in flexure strength (P < 0.001) after three million cycles of dynamic loading for all surface treatments. Scanning electron imaging revealed grain boundary thickening, grain pull-out, and micro-cracking as the main structural defects. The results suggest that various surface treatments of zirconia based dental ceramics may significantly influence their long term fatigue resistance in the oral environment.  相似文献

To study the effect of the surface properties on the bending fatigue performance of heavy-duty gear steel, the authors of this paper used the ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) to strengthen 20Cr2Ni4A carburized gear steel. USRP is a novel technique in which the ultrasonic technology is incorporated into the concept of conventional deep rolling. In this study, we illustrated how the surface properties and cross-section mechanical property influence the three-point bending fatigue life of the samples before and after USRP treatment. At the same time, the predicted failure probability-stress-number of cycles (P-S-N) curve was drawn, and the fatigue fracture was analysed. The results show that the fatigue limit increased from 651.36 MPa to 918.88 MPa after USRP treatment. The fatigue source is mainly from the sample interior or surface scratches, and the fatigue performance is positively correlated with the results of the material surface roughness, surface residual stress and surface hardness. At the same time, combined with the change in the phase structure, dislocation structure, residual stress and hardness of the cross section of the material, it is found that the USRP process turns the steel into a gradient material with five layers. Finally, the coupling mechanism between the ultrasonic surface strengthening deformation layer and the carburized layer of 20Cr2Ni4A carburized gear steel is presented, and the grain structure distribution diagram of the section of the 20Cr2Ni4A model after surface strengthening treatment was simulated. The mechanism that influenced the fatigue performance after USRP treatment is explained from the perspectives of the surface and cross section of the samples.  相似文献

Ductile-to-brittle transition (DBT) temperature and brittle fracture stress, σF, are important toughness criteria for structural materials. In this paper, low-carbon steels with an ultrafine elongated grain (UFEG) structure (transverse grain size 1.2 μm) and with two ferrite (α)-pearlite structure with grain sizes 10 µm and 18 µm were prepared. The UFEG steel was fabricated using multipass warm biaxial rolling. The tensile tests with a cylindrical specimen and three-point bending tests with a single-edge-notched specimen were performed at −196 °C. The local stress near the notch was quantitatively calculated via finite element analysis (FEA). The σF for each sample was quantified based on the experimental results and FEA. The relationship between σF and dα in the wide range of 1.0 μm to 138 μm was plotted, including data from past literature. Finally, the conditions of grain size and temperature that cause DBT fracture in low-carbon steel were shown via the stress−d−1/2 map. The results quantitatively showed the superiority of α grain size for brittle fracture.  相似文献

Excitation of the acoustic field, leading to the Blaha effect, significantly affects the plasticity of a material. In the micro-forming field, the so-called impact effect is found to generate a larger amount of dislocation and produce greater plastic deformation than acoustic softening. In this study, the mechanism of deformation in the surface of the material with ultrasonic vibration assistance was investigated and compared with that in the bulk. Forging tests using a newly developed ultrasonic vibrator were carried out on pure Cu foils with various process conditions. The longitudinal vibration frequency of the ultrasonic transducer was 60 ± 2 kHz, and the vibration amplitude was in an adjustable range of 0~6 μm. Forging tests were carried out at different amplitudes. The result shows that acoustic softening and the impact effect could be separated by an oscilloscope in the micro-forging system. The difference in deformation on the surface asperity caused by acoustic softening and the impact effect is discussed. Compared to acoustic softening, which has a limited effect on the deformation of the surface asperity, the impact effect could create more plastic deformation on the surface asperity. Therefore, the reduction in the surface roughness would increase after the impact effect occurs. In addition, to confirm the mechanism of acoustic softening and the impact effect, the microstructural evolution of specimens, at the surface scale and inner scale, was investigated by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). It was found that acoustic softening could create more grain refinement, and with the amplitude increasing, the impact effect would oppositely cause the surface grains to grow. In this study, the mechanism of how the impact effect and acoustic softening affect the deformation behavior of the surface asperity was investigated.  相似文献

High-temperature components in power plants may fail due to creep and fatigue. Creep damage is usually accompanied by the nucleation, growth, and coalescence of grain boundary cavities, while fatigue damage is caused by excessive accumulated plastic deformation due to the local stress concentration. This paper proposes a multiscale numerical framework combining the crystal plastic frame with the meso-damage mechanisms. Not only can it better describe the deformation mechanism dominated by creep from a microscopic viewpoint, but also reflects the local damage of materials caused by irreversible microstructure changes in the process of creep-fatigue deformation to some extent. In this paper, the creep-fatigue crack initiation analysis of a modified 12%Cr steel (X12CrMoWvNBN10-1-1) is carried out for a given notch specimen. It is found that creep cracks usually initiate at the triple grain boundary junctions or at the grain boundaries approximately perpendicular to the loading direction, while fatigue cracks always initiate from the notch surface where stress is concentrated. In addition to this, the crack initiation life can be quantitatively described, which is affected by the average grain size, initial notch size, stress range and holding time.  相似文献

In the present work, the localized features of adiabatic shear bands (ASBs) of our recently designed damage tolerance α+β dual-phase Ti alloy are investigated by the integration of electron backscattering diffraction and experimental and theoretical Schmid factor analysis. At the strain rate of 1.8 × 104 s−1 induced by a split Hopkinson pressure bar, the shear stress reaches a maximum of 1951 MPa with the shear strain of 1.27. It is found that the α+β dual-phase colony structures mediate the extensive plastic deformations along α/β phase boundaries, contributing to the formations of ASBs, microvoids, and cracks, and resulting in stable and unstable softening behaviors. Moreover, the dynamic recrystallization yields the dispersion of a great amount of fine α grains along the shearing paths and in the ASBs, promoting the softening and shear localization. On the contrary, low-angle grain boundaries present good resistance to the formation of cracks and the thermal softening, while the non-basal slipping dramatically contributes to the strain hardening, supporting the promising approaches to fabricate the advanced damage tolerance dual-phase Ti alloy.  相似文献

In this paper, rotating bending fatigue tests of 2024-T4 Al alloy with different oxide coatings were carried out. Compared to the uncoated and previously reported oxide coatings of aluminum alloys, the fatigue strength is able to be enhanced by using a novel oxide coating with sealing pore technology. These results indicate that the better the coating surface quality is, the more excellent the fatigue performance under rotating bending fatigue loading is. The improvement on the fatigue performance is mainly because the fatigue crack initiation and the early stage of fatigue crack growth at the coating layer can be delayed after PEO coating with pore sealing. Therefore, it is a so-called synergistic coating technology for various uses, including welding thermal cracks and filling micro-pores. The effects of different oxide coatings on surface hardness, compressive residual stress, morphology and fatigue fracture morphology are discussed. A critical compressive residual stress of about 95–100 MPa is proposed.  相似文献

Additively manufactured (AM) materials and hot rolled materials are typically orthotropic, and exhibit anisotropic elastic properties. This paper elucidates the anisotropic elastic properties (Young’s modulus, shear modulus, and Poisson’s ratio) of Ti6Al4V alloy in four different conditions: three AM (by selective laser melting, SLM, electron beam melting, EBM, and directed energy deposition, DED, processes) and one wrought alloy (for comparison). A specially designed polygon sample allowed measurement of 12 sound wave velocities (SWVs), employing the dynamic pulse-echo ultrasonic technique. In conjunction with the measured density values, these SWVs enabled deriving of the tensor of elastic constants (Cij) and the three-dimensional (3D) Young’s moduli maps. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and micro-computed tomography (μCT) were employed to characterize the grain size and orientation as well as porosity and other defects which could explain the difference in the measured elastic constants of the four materials. All three types of AM materials showed only minor anisotropy. The wrought (hot rolled) alloy exhibited the highest density, virtually pore-free μCT images, and the highest ultrasonic anisotropy and polarity behavior. EBSD analysis revealed that a thin β-phase layer that formed along the elongated grain boundaries caused the ultrasonic polarity behavior. The finding that the elastic properties depend on the manufacturing process and on the angle relative to either the rolling direction or the AM build direction should be taken into account in the design of products. The data reported herein is valuable for materials selection and finite element analyses in mechanical design. The pulse-echo measurement procedure employed in this study may be further adapted and used for quality control of AM materials and parts.  相似文献

The effects of CeO2 size on the microstructure and synthesis mechanism of Al-Ti-C alloy were investigated using a quenching experiment method. A scanning calorimetry experiment was used to investigate the synthesis mechanism of TiC, the aluminum melt in situ reaction was carried out to synthesize master alloys and its refining performance was estimated. The results show that the Al-Ti-C-Ce system is mainly composed of α-Al, Al3Ti, TiC and Ti2Al20Ce. The addition of CeO2 obviously speeds up the progress of the reaction, reduces the size of Al3Ti and TiC and lowers the formation temperature of second-phase particles. When the size of CeO2 is 2–4 μm, the promotion effect on the system is most obvious. The smaller the size of CeO2, the smaller the size of Al3Ti and TiC and the lower the formation temperature. Al-Ti-C-Ce master alloy has a significant refinement effect on commercial pure aluminum. When the CeO2 size is 2–4 μm, the grain size of commercial pure aluminum is refined to 227 μm by Al-Ti-C-Ce master alloy.  相似文献

As the fatigue strength of metallic components may be affected by residual stress variation at small length scales, an evaluation method for studying residual stress at sub-mm scale is needed. The sin2ψ method using X-ray diffraction (XRD) is a common method to measure residual stress. However, this method has a lower limit on length scale. In the present study, a method using at a 2D XRD detector with ω-oscillation is proposed, and the measured residual stress obtained by the 2D method is compared to results obtained from the sin2ψ method and the slitting method. The results show that the 2D method can evaluate residual stress in areas with a diameter of 0.2 mm or less in a stainless steel with average grain size of 7 μm. The 2D method was further applied to assess residual stress in the stainless steel after treatment by laser cavitation peening (LCP). The diameter of the laser spot used for LCP was about 0.5 mm, and the stainless steel was treated with evenly spaced laser spots at 4 pulses/mm2. The 2D method revealed fluctuations of LCP-induced residual stress at sub-mm scale that are consistent with fluctuations in the height of the peened surface.  相似文献

The study focused on dissimilar brazing of metallized YSZ (Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia) and Crofer alloy using BAg-8 (72Ag-28Cu, wt%) filler foil. The YSZ substrate was metallized by sequentially sputtering Ti (0.5/1 μm), Cu (1/3 μm), and Ag (1.5/5 μm) layers, and the Crofer substrate was coated with Ag layers with a thickness of 1.5 and 5 μm, respectively. The BAg-8 filler demonstrated excellent wettability on both metallized YSZ and Crofer substrates. The brazed joint primarily consisted of Ag-Cu eutectic. The metallized Ti layer dissolved into the braze melt, and the Ti preferentially reacted with YSZ and Fe from the Crofer substrate. The globular Fe2Ti intermetallic compound was observed on the YSZ side of the joint. The interfacial reaction of Ti was increased when the thickness of the metallized Ti layer was increased from 0.5 to 1 μm. Both brazed joints were crack free, and no pressure drop was detected after testing at room temperature for 24 h. In the YSZ/Ti(0.5μ)/Cu(1μ)/Ag(1.5μ)/BAg-8(50μ)/Ag(1.5μ)/Crofer joint tested at 600 °C, the pressure of helium decreased from 2.01 to 1.91 psig. In contrast, the helium pressure of the YSZ/Ti(1μ)/Cu(3μ)/Ag(5μ)/BAg-8(50μ)/Ag(5μ)/Crofer joint slightly decreased from 2.02 to 1.98 psig during the cooling cycle of the test. The greater interfacial reaction between the metallized YSZ and BAg-8 filler due to the thicker metallized Ti layer on the YSZ substrate was responsible for the improved gas-tight performance of the joint.  相似文献

The agricultural and forestry waste walnut shell and copolyester hot-melt adhesives (Co-PES) powder were selected as feedstock. A kind of low-cost, low-power consumption, and environmentally friendly walnut shell/Co-PES powder composites (WSPC) was used for selective laser sintering (SLS). Though analyzing the size and morphology of walnut shell particle (≤550 μm) as well as performing an analysis of surface roughness, density, and mechanical test of WSPC parts with different particle sizes, results showed that the optimal mechanical performance (tensile strength of 2.011 MPa, bending strength of 3.5 MPa, impact strength of 0.718 KJ/m2) as walnut shell powder particle size was 80 to 120 μm. When walnut shell powder particle diameter was 120 to 180 μm, the minimum value of surface roughness of WSPC parts was 15.711 μm and density was approximately the maximum (0.926 g/cm3).  相似文献

In order to solve issues related to bridge girders, expansion devices and road surfaces, as well as other structures that are prone to fatigue failure, a kind of fatigue-resistant elastic polyurethane concrete (EPUC) was obtained by adding waste rubber particles (40 mesh with 10% fine aggregate volume replacement rate) to conventional engineering polyurethane concrete (PUC). Based on the preparation and properties of EPUC, its constitutive relation was proposed through compression and tensile tests; then, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), an atomic force microscope (AFM) and a 3D non-contact surface profilometer were used to study the failure morphology and micromechanisms of EPUC. On this basis, four-point bending fatigue tests of EPUC were carried out at different temperature levels (−20 °C, 0 °C, 20 °C) and different strain levels (400 με~1200 με). These were used to analyze the stiffness modulus, hysteresis angle and dissipated energy of EPUC, and our results outline the fatigue life prediction models of EPUC at different temperatures. The results show that the addition of rubber particles fills the interior of EPUC with tiny elastic structures and effectively optimizes the interface bonding between aggregate and polyurethane. In addition, EPUC has good mechanical properties and excellent fatigue resistance; the fatigue life of EPUC at a room temperature of 600 με can grow by more than two million times, and it also has a longer service life and reduced disease frequency, as well as fewer maintenance requirements. This paper will provide a theoretical and design basis for the fatigue resistance design and engineering application of building materials. Meanwhile, the new EPUC material has broad application potential in terms of roads, bridges and green buildings.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the element composition and grain size of commercial dental instruments used for ultrasonic scaler tips, which are composed of stainless-steel materials. The differences in mechanical properties and wear resistances were compared. The samples were classified into 4 groups in accordance with the manufacturer, Electro Medical Systems, 3A MEDES, DMETEC and OSUNG MND, and the element compositions of each stainless-steel ultrasonic scaler tip were analyzed with micro-X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (μXRF) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). One-way ANOVA showed that there were significant differences in shear strength and Vickers hardness among the stainless-steel ultrasonic scaler tips depending on the manufacturer (p < 0.05). The mass before and after wear were found to have no significant difference among groups (p > 0.05), but there was a significant difference in the wear volume loss (p < 0.05). The results were then correlated with μXRF results as well as observations of grain size with optical microscopy, which concluded that the Fe content and the grain size of the stainless steel have significant impacts on strength. Additionally, stainless-steel ultrasonic scaler tips with higher Vickers hardness values showed greater wear resistance, which would be an important wear characteristic for clinicians to check.  相似文献
