The calorigenic effect of feeding and its potential benefit in defraying thermoregulatory costs and attenuating immersion hypothermia of adult muskrats were investigated. A single session of feeding on aquatic vegetation was sufficient to raise the metabolic rate of muskrats for a period of at least 5 h. The peak postprandial rate of oxygen consumption averaged 1.42 times the level established for fasted animals, and the heat increment of feeding accounted for about 40% of the metabolizable energy intake of muskrats. There was no evidence of a postprandial rise in oxygen consumption of muskrats that entered water at 18–19°C after feeding. In aquatic trials, average and minimum steady-state oxygen consumption rates of fed muskrats were similar to, or even lower than values recorded from fasted animals, implying substitution of heat increment of feeding for thermoregulatory heat production. Our data did not support the hypothesis that heat increment of feeding retards body cooling in water. Net body temperature decline in water was actually higher in fed animals than in fasted controls. However, since previously fed muskrats also entered water at an elevated body temperature, the final body temperature (at 30 min immersion) was similar in all groups. These findings suggest that metabolic heat generated incidental to preimmersion feeding could provide a thermoregulatory benefit to muskrats by reducing the need for active thermogenesis in water.  相似文献

Intraspecific variability in body oxygen reserves, muscle buffering capacity, diving metabolic rate, and diving behavior were examined in recently captured juvenile and adult muskrats. Allometric scaling exponents for lung (b=1.04), blood (b=0.91), and total body oxygen storage capacity (b=1.09) did not differ from unity. The concentration of skeletal muscle myoglobin scaled positively with mass in 254-600-g juveniles (b=1.63) but was mass-independent in larger individuals. Scaling exponents for diving metabolic rate and calculated aerobic dive limit (ADL) were 0.74 and 0.37, respectively. Contrary to allometric predictions, we found no evidence that the diving abilities of muskrats increased with age or body size. Juveniles aged 1-2 mo exhibited similar dive times but dove more frequently than summer-caught adults. Average and cumulative dive times and dive&rcolon;surface ratios were highest for fall- and winter-caught muskrats. Total body oxygen reserves were greatest in winter, mainly due to an increase in blood oxygen storage capacity. The buffering capacity of the hind limb swimming muscles also was highest in winter-caught animals. Several behavioral indicators of dive performance, including average and maximum duration of voluntary dives, varied positively with blood hemoglobin and muscle myoglobin concentration of muskrats. However, none of the behavioral measures were strongly correlated with the total body oxygen reserves or ADLs derived for these same individuals.  相似文献

We investigated the diving behaviour, the time allocation of the dive cycle and the behavioural aerobic dive limit (ADL) of platypuses (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) living at a sub-alpine Tasmanian lake. Individual platypuses were equipped with combined data logger-transmitter packages measuring dive depth. Mean dive duration was 31.3 s with 72% of all dives lasting between 18 and 40 s. Mean surface duration was 10.1 s. Mean dive depth was 1.28 m with a maximum of 8.77 m. Platypuses performed up to 1600 dives per foraging trip with a mean of 75 dives per hour. ADL was estimated by consideration of post-dive surface intervals vs. dive durations. Only 15% of all dives were found to exceed the estimated ADL of 40 s, indicating mainly aerobic diving in the species. Foraging platypuses followed a model of optimised recovery time, the optimal breathing theory. Total bottom duration or total foraging duration per day is proposed as a useful indicator of foraging efficiency and hence habitat quality in the species.  相似文献

Summary Groups of Arctic charr,Salvelinus alpinus, which had been acclimated to water with a salinity of 7 g·l–1 and natural temperature and photoperiod, were exposed to water with different salinities and temperatures in June, September and February. At a salinity of 15 g·l–1, plasma osmolality, plasma Na+, Cl, Mg2+ concentrations and the activity of gill Na-K-ATPase were stable, irrespective of temperature and season. In June, the charr were able to regulate blood plasma ionic levels within narrow limits when exposed to a salinity of 34 g·l–1 (sea water) and a temperature of 8°C. The hypo-osmoregulatory capacity was less, but sufficient if the temperature was only 1°C during the seawater exposure. At the start of the experiment, the gill Na-K-ATPase activity was significantly higher in June than corresponding enzyme activities in September and February. Furthermore, an increase in gill Na-K-ATPase activity during the seawater exposure (8°C) was seen in June. Irrespective of ambient temperature and salinity, no fish died during the June experiments. In September and February, exposure to sea water produced marked increases in plasma osmolality and plasma ion concentrations. There were no changes in gill Na-K-ATPase activity. Consequently, the fish became dehydrated and were moribund after a short period of seawater exposure. Highest mortality was recorded when charr were exposed to winter sea conditions (34 g·l–1 and 1°C) in February. The results indicate that an increase in daylength induce a hypo-osmoregulatory capacity in the Arctic charr during summer. In fall and winter, however, reduced daylength are accompanied by poor hypo-osmoregulatory capacity. This leads to high mortality as a result of increased electrolyte levels and dehydration.  相似文献

Summary Two predictions of the ideal free distribution model, a null hypothesis of habitat selection, were examined using free-ranging muskrats. We rejected the prediction that the proportion of the animals found in each of five habitats was independent of population size. Data on over-winter occupancy of muskrat dwellings tend also to refute the prediction of equal fitness reward among habitats. Habitat type and water-level had a profound effect on the suitability of a site for settlement. We concluded that the observed pattern of muskrat distribution followed more closely an ideal despotic distribution where some individuals benefited from a higher fitness because of resource monopolization. Current theories of density-dependent habitat selection, which assume an ideal free distribution, would not apply to muskrats and possibly to many other mammal species.  相似文献

Muskrat invaded Valaam Island (Northern part of European Russia) in the 1970s. Aquatic plant communities of 1962 and 1993 were compared on the same plots. Quantitative changes were tested with the help of jack-knifing estimates of most known inventory (-) diversity indicators. Qualitative transformations were assessed using -diversity values. The results demonstrated substantially more discriminant ability of diversity measures than classical methods of mathematical statistics. All of the -diversity values declined synchronously without exception. Species composition also changed greatly and those species which turn out to be more resistant to muskrat grazing became the main dominant plants. The activity of Ondatra became the over-riding ecological factor connecting the littoral plant communities of the Valaam. It is concluded that the sustainability of this ecosystem was damaged by muskrat's invasion and that the role of muskrat should not be underestimated when studying the ecology of freshwater littoral communities.  相似文献

Metabolic rates, VO2, were studied in four muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) swimming in a water channel at velocities of 0.2 to 0.75 m/s in water at temperatures of 25 and 30 degrees C. At both water temperatures, VO2 increased linearly with increasing swimming velocity. The VO2 was higher for muskrats swimming in water at 25 than 30 degrees C. The metabolic performance of swimming appears to be influenced by the interaction of swimming velocity and water temperature.  相似文献

Sexual selection is a powerful force that influences the evolution of a variety of traits associated with female mate choice and male–male competition. Although other factors have been implicated, sexual selection may be particularly important in the evolution of the genitalia. Traits under sexual selection typically have high phenotypic variance and positive allometry relative to non-sexual traits. Here, we test the hypothesis that the baculum (os penis) of the muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) is under sexual selection by examining phenotypic variance and allometry relative to non-sexual traits. Muskrats were sampled from Ontario, Canada, and a variety of traits measured. Measurements included baculum length and width, and three non-sexual traits (skull length, skull width, hind foot length). We used coefficient of variation (CV) and allometric slopes calculated using reduced major axis regression to test our hypotheses. Baculum traits had significantly higher CV’s relative to non-sexual traits. Baculum traits also showed positive allometry, whereas all non-sexual traits had negative allometric relationships. In addition, baculum width had higher CV’s and steeper allometric slopes than baculum length, indicating that, in muskrat, baculum width may be more influenced by sexual selection than baculum length. Positive allometry of the baculum is consistent with other examples of mammalian genitalia, but contrasts with negative allometry found in many insects. Other examples of positive allometry and high phenotypic variance of the baculum have suggested that females may use the baculum as an indicator of male quality. “Good genes” indicator traits may be particularly important in species that mate in an environmental context that prohibits female assessment of male quality. Muskrats mate aquatically, and thus females may be unable to properly assess males prior to copulation.  相似文献

The lipid content and composition of Nereis (Hediste) diversicolor O. F. Müller (Annelida, Polychaeta, Nereidae) a mud-dwelling, intertidal errant polychaete in the Tagus estuary (Portugal), were examined on the monthly basis by lipid extraction, TLC and capillary GC. In this estuary, N. diversicolor is by far the dominant species among polychaeta and the main food item in the natural diet of several flatfishes. The biochemical elucidation of its lipid structure and distribution throughout the year, described in this study, provides information not only about the physiological role of lipids in the animal under consideration but also about dietary fatty acid requirements of some flatfishes in the wild and under laboratory conditions. The total lipid content varied between a maximum of 19.3% lyophilized dry weight in February (4.4% fresh weight) and a minimum of 6.6% in August (1.9% fresh weight). The major lipid classes were triacylglycerol, phospholipid, free sterol, free fatty acid, sterol ester/wax ester and alkyldiacylglycerol. The fatty acid composition was rather unsaturated with a 1:2 mean ratio of n-3: n-6. The major fatty acids were C160:0, C18:1n-9, C18:2n-6, and C20:5n-3; there were smaller amounts of C180:0, C18:1n-11, C18:1n-7, C18:3n-3, C20:1, C20:2n-6, C20:4n-6, C22:2, C22:5n-3, and many other fatty acids were detected at trace levels. The unsaturation ranged from 36.9 mg/g dry weight in summer to 107.4 mg/g in winter. An accumulation of fatty acids from plant origin was evident, in particular linoleic acid (C18:2n-6), which was quantitatively one of the major fatty acids throughout the year.  相似文献

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) plays an important role in the steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis in the testis through its receptors PAC1, VPAC1 and VPAC2. In this study, we investigated the seasonal expressions of PACAP, PAC1, VPAC1, VPAC2, luteinizing hormone receptor (LHR), follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR), steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR), 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3β-HSD) and CYP17A1 in the testis of male muskrat during the breeding season and non-breeding season, respectively. Histologically, we observed the presence of Leydig cells, Sertoli cells and various types of germ cells in the testis during the breeding season, yet only Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, spermatogonia and primary spermatocyte during the non-breeding season. In addition, the immunohistochemical localizations of PACAP and VPAC1 were identified in the Leydig cells, spermatogonia and spermatozoa during the breeding season, while only in the Leydig cells and spermatogonia during the non-breeding season, and PAC1 and VPAC2 were localized in the Leydig cells in both seasons, among which LHR, StAR, 3β-HSD and CYP17A1 were also expressed. Meanwhile, the protein and mRNA expression levels of PACAP, PAC1, VPAC1, VPAC2, LHR, FSHR, StAR, 3β-HSD and CYP17A1 in the testis during the breeding season were significantly higher than those during the non-breeding season. These results suggested that PACAP is involved in the regulation of steroidogenesis and spermatogenesis via an endocrine, autocrine or paracrine manner in the testis of muskrat.Key words: Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP), PACAP receptors, steroidogenesis, testis, Ondatra zibethicus.  相似文献

A histological study was undertaken to clarify seasonal changes in the spermatogenic epithelium of Japanese macaques. Testicular tissue samples were excised by biopsies from five adult laboratory-maintained males in mating and non-mating seasons. The samples were fixed with Bouin's solution, embedded in paraffin, and stained with PAS and hematoxylin. Microscopic observations on cross-sections of seminiferous tubules revealed that the seminiferous epithelium in the mating season was thicker than in the non-mating season. PAS-stained granules were found in some of the dark A-type spermatogonia, which significantly increased in the non-mating season. Spermatids of the steps preceding the appearance of the acrosomic cap in stages I to III were observed significantly more often than those in the step coinciding with the formation of the acrosomic cap in stage IV. In stage I, the ratio of mature spermatids or spermatozoa to immature spermatids in the mating season was higher than that in the non-mating season. These findings suggest that spermiogenesis, as well as spermatocytogenesis, is inhibited in the non-mating season.  相似文献

Summary In the pars tuberalis of the hypophysis of Rana temporaria, which shows the ultrastructural characteristics of a polypeptide hormone secreting endocrine gland, seasonal changes of the ultrastructure are described. In accordance with the literature, these seasonal changes of ultrastructure are interpreted as the morphological expression of seasonal changes of endocrine activity of the pars tuberalis.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in abundance and distribution pattern of soil micro-arthropods were studied in connection with a few environmental factors in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) plantation. The soil arthropods were sampled from three different depths at intervals of two months for two years. Of the collected animals (total 51000–155000 m−2), Collembola (20000–76000 m−2), oribatid mites (19000–55000 m−2) and carnivorous mites (6200–21000 m−2) were the numerically dominant animal groups. Low seasonal variations in abundance indicated their seasonal stability in population levels. The trends in seasonal fluctuation were similar among these groups and between the two years, showing bimodal pattern with little peaks in early summer and winter. The pattern of seasonal fluctuation in abundance of carnivorous mites (P d) was significantly synchronized with that in the total abundance of Collembola and oribatid mites (P τ). Thus, the number-ratios (P d/P τ) were fairly constant, ranging from 0.10 to 0.25. Seasonal changes in vertical distribution of the three animal groups showed a similar pattern for both years. The downward migrations were shown to be more affected by low temperatures in winter accompanied by snow coverage rather than by the desiccation of the surface soil in summer. All the three groups demonstrated as a whole slightly aggregated patterns of horizontal distribution throughout the two years. Temporal increases in the patchiness indices were observed from summer to autumn when the moisture content of the surface soil was low.

The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) spends more than 12 h a day in the water. Hippos are often submitted to water temperatures that vary with the seasons. We hypothesize that this difference between cool and warm water temperatures leads to variations in behavioural thermoregulation. We recorded the exposure of hippos to sunshine at the beginning and at the end of the dry season. Our results show that (1) sunshine exposure lasted much longer in cool water and (2) sun-bathing occurred during the hottest hours. It is therefore likely that in cool water hippos were cold and expressed an original behaviour of search for heat.  相似文献

Seasonal variations in the ex vivo phagocytic function of blood cells from tench, including ingestion capacity of inert particles and its destruction (microbicide capacity) assessed by measurement of superoxide anion production, were studied. Tench were maintained under natural conditions throughout the year, and the different assays of samples taken during each season were initially performed in vitro at 22°C and the results compared. Subsequently, assays were performed at the same temperature as that of the water ponds in which the fish were kept (“seasonal temperature”: 12°C in winter, 22°C in spring and autumn and 30°C in summer) and the results compared seasonally. The results at 22°C showed that phagocytic capacity was greatest in spring and summer and lowest in winter. However, when phagocytic capacity was measured at seasonal temperature, highest values appeared in winter and lowest in summer and autumn. Nitroblue tetrazolium reduction by tench phagocytes after phagocytosing latex beads demonstrated a similar seasonal behaviour at both 22°C in each season and at seasonal temperature. The highest values appeared in summer, which suggests a better microbicide capacity in this season. The results obtained in this study suggest that for a correct interpretation of ex vivo phagocytic capacity of fish through the year it is necessary to use the same assay temperature as that of the water in which the fish is kept.  相似文献

We examined the thermoregulatory behaviour (TRB) of roosting Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) in north central Chile during summer and winter, when ambient temperatures (Ta) are most extreme. Each body posture was considered to represent a particular TRB, which was ranked in a sequence that reflected different degrees of thermal load and was assigned an arbitrary thermoregulatory score. During summer, birds exhibited eight different TRBs, mainly oriented to heat dissipation, and experienced a wide range of Ta (from 14 to 31°C), occasionally above their thermoneutral zone (TNZ, from 2 to 30°C), this being evident by observations of extreme thermoregulatory responses such as panting. In winter, birds exhibited only three TRBs, mainly oriented to heat retention, and experienced a smaller range of Ta (from 11 to 18°C), always within the TNZ, even at night. The components of behavioural responses increased directly with the heat load which explains the broader behavioural repertoire observed in summer. Since penguins are primarily adapted in morphology and physiology to cope with low water temperatures, our results suggest that behavioural thermoregulation may be important in the maintenance of the thermal balance in Humboldt penguins while on land.  相似文献

Summary Seasonal changes in photosynthesis were examined in the desiccation-tolerant fern Polypodium virginianum growing in a forest understory along cliff edges of the Niagara Escarpment in southern Ontario, Canada. For plants growing in situ, the photosynthetic response to irradiance was examined on a seasonal basis, to determine the degree to which the utilization of light changed over the growing season. Experiments were executed on control plants, on previously desiccated then rehydrated plants, and on continuously hydrated plants to determine if prior desiccation influenced the response to light. Soil and xylem water potential and temperature were monitored and used as covariates in analyses. The results showed that carbon gain in the spring greatly exceeded that of any other season. Despite this, there was little change in the photosynthetic response to light on a seasonal basis even though plants were exposed to highly variable and highly limited light most of the time. Prior desiccation had a slight influence on photosynthetic rate but not on other photosynthetic parameters such as the light compensation point and Lhalf. Temperature was a significant seasonal covariate and additional experiments conducted in the laboratory showed that the response of photosynthesis to temperature was broad. Xylem water potential was correlated with seasonal changes in relative humidity. The results suggest that P. virginanum persists in hostile cliff-edge habitats by being able to exploit high-light periods in the spring and by thereafter maintaining a low but relatively constant rate of carbon despite prior exposure to fluctuating supplies of light and water.  相似文献
