The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow and heat transfer characteristics for the boundary layer flow over a permeable stretching sheet are considered. Velocity and thermal slip conditions are taken into account. Problem formulation is developed in the presence of thermal radiation. Governing non‐linear problem is solved by a homotopy analysis method. Convergence of the derived solutions is studied. Numerical values of skin‐friction coefficient and local Nusselt number are tabulated. Effects of pertinent parameters on the velocity and temperature profiles are discussed. Comparison between the present and previous limiting results is shown. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The effect of chemical reaction on free convective flow and mass transfer of a viscous, incompressible and electrically conducting fluid over a stretching surface is investigated in the presence of a constant transverse magnetic field. The non-linear boundary layer equations with the boundary conditions are transferred by a similarity transformation into a system of non-linear ordinary differential equations with the appropriate boundary conditions. Furthermore, the similarity equations are solved numerically by using a fourth order Runge-Kutta scheme with the shooting method. Numerical results of the skin friction coefficient, the local Nusselt number Nu, the local Sherwood number Sh, as will as the velocity, temperature and concentration profiles are presented for gases with a Prandtl number of 0.71 for various values of chemical reaction parameter, order of reaction, magnetic parameter and Schmidt number.

In this paper, the problem of steady magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a viscous and electrically conducting fluid over a stretching sheet is studied. The effect of the induced magnetic field is taken into account. The transformed ordinary differential equations are solved numerically using the finite-difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. Numerical results are obtained for various values of the magnetic parameter, the reciprocal magnetic Prandtl number and the Prandtl number. The effects of these parameters on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are determined and discussed in detail. When the magnetic field is absent, the closed analytical results for the skin friction are compared with the exact numerical results. Also the numerical results for the heat flux from the stretching surface are compared with the results reported by other authors when the magnetic field is absent. It is found that very good agreement exists.

In the present work, the effect of MHD flow and heat transfer within a boundary layer flow on an upper-convected Maxwell (UCM) fluid over a stretching sheet is examined. The governing boundary layer equations of motion and heat transfer are non-dimensionalized using suitable similarity variables and the resulting transformed, ordinary differential equations are then solved numerically by shooting technique with fourth order Runge–Kutta method. For a UCM fluid, a thinning of the boundary layer and a drop in wall skin friction coefficient is predicted to occur for higher the elastic number. The objective of the present work is to investigate the effect of Maxwell parameter β, magnetic parameter Mn and Prandtl number Pr on the temperature field above the sheet.

We study the MHD flow and also heat transfer in a viscoelastic liquid over a stretching sheet in the presence of radiation. The stretching of the sheet is assumed to be proportional to the distance from the slit. Two different temperature conditions are studied, namely (i) the sheet with prescribed surface temperature (PST) and (ii) the sheet with prescribed wall heat flux (PHF). The basic boundary layer equations for momentum and heat transfer, which are non-linear partial differential equations, are converted into non-linear ordinary differential equations by means of similarity transformation. The resulting non-linear momentum differential equation is solved exactly. The energy equation in the presence of viscous dissipation (or frictional heating), internal heat generation or absorption, and radiation is a differential equation with variable coefficients, which is transformed to a confluent hypergeometric differential equation using a new variable and using the Rosseland approximation for the radiation. The governing differential equations are solved analytically and the effects of various parameters on velocity profiles, skin friction coefficient, temperature profile and wall heat transfer are presented graphically. The results have possible technological applications in liquid-based systems involving stretchable materials.

The time evolution in the temperature field resulting from the sudden introduction of a heat source into the already fully established steady MHD flow of an electrically conducting fluid past a linearly stretching isothermal surface is considered. The problem is shown to be fully described by two dimensionless parameters, a modified magnetic field strength ?? and a heat source strength Q. Numerical solutions of the initial-value problem show that there is a critical value Q c of the parameter Q, dependent on ??, such that, for Q<Q c , the solution approaches a steady state at large times and, for Q>Q c , the solutions grows exponentially large as time increases. This growth rate is determined through an eigenvalue problem which also determines the critical value Q c . The limits of Q c for both small and large values of ?? are discussed.

The flow and heat transfer over a stretching sheet with a magnetic field in an electrically conducting ambient fluid have been studied. The effects of the induced magnetic field and sources or sinks have been included in the analysis. Both non-isothermal wall and constant heat flux conditions have been considered. The governing equations have been solved numerically using a shooting method. It is observed that for the prescribed wall temperature the skin friction, induced magnetic field at the wall and heat transfer are enhanced due to the magnetic field, but in general, they reduce as the reciprocal of the magnetic Prandtl number increases. For constant heat flux case, the temperature at the wall reduces as the magnetic field increases, but it increases with the reciprocal of the magnetic Prandtl number. The heat transfer is strongly affected by the Prandtl number, wall temperature and sink. Whenm<–2 andPr>2.5 the unrealistic temperature distributions are encountered. The present analysis is more general than any previous investigation.

An analysis is carried out to study the momentum, mass and heat transfer characteristics on the flow of visco-elastic fluid (Walter's liquid-B model) past a stretching sheet in the presence of a transverse magnetic field. In heat transfer, two cases are considered:
1.
The sheet with prescribed surface temperature (PST case); and
2.
The sheet with prescribed wall heat flux (PHF case).
The solution of equations of momentum, mass and heat transfer are obtained analytically. Emphasis has been laid to study the effects of various parameters like magnetic parameter Mn, visco-elastic parameter k1, Schmidt number Sc, and Prandtl number Pr on flow, heat and mass transfer characteristics.

A general analysis has been developed to study the combined effect of the free convective heat and mass transfer on the steady three-dimensional laminar boundary layer flow over a stretching surface. The flow is subject to a transverse magnetic field normal to the plate. The governing three-dimensional partial differential equations for the present case are transformed into ordinary differential equation using three-dimensional similarity variables. The resulting equations, are solved numerically by applying a fifth order Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg scheme with the shooting technique. The effects of the Magnetic field Parameter M, buoyancy parameter N, Prandtl number Pr and Schmidt number Sc are examined on the velocity, temperature and concentration distributions. Numerical data for the skin-friction coefficients, Nusselt and Sherwood numbers have been tabulated for various parametric conditions. The results are compared with known from the literature.

The present paper examines the hydromagnetic three-dimensional flow induced by a stretched surface. An incompressible material saturates the porous medium. Velocity and thermal slip boundary conditions are considered. Suitable transformations are used to obtain the nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Series solutions of the resulting systems are constructed. The effects of various pertinent parameters on the axial velocity and temperature distributions are analyzed graphically. The skin friction and the Nusselt number are computed numerically and graphically.

In this paper, we study the unsteady coupled heat and mass transfer of two-dimensional MHD fluid over a moving oscillatory stretching surface with Soret and Dufour effects. Viscous dissipation effects are adopted in the energy equation. A uniform magnetic field is applied vertically to the flow direction. The governing equations are reduced to non-linear coupled partial differential equations and solved by means of homotopy analysis method (HAM). The effects of some physical parameters such as magnetic parameter, Dufour number, Soret number, the Prandtl num- ber and the ratio of the oscillation frequency of the sheet to its stretching rate on the flow and heat transfer characteristics are illustrated and analyzed.

This paper deals with the study of boundary layer flow and heat transfer of a visco-elastic fluid immersed in a porous medium over a non-isothermal stretching sheet. The fluid viscosity is assumed to vary as a function of temperature. The presence of variable viscosity of the fluid leads to the coupling and the non-linearity in the boundary value problem. A numerical shooting algorithm for two unknown initial conditions with fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration scheme has been used to solve the coupled non-linear boundary value problem. An analysis has been carried out for two different cases namely (1) prescribed surface temperature (PST), and (2) prescribed heat flux (PHF), to get the effect of fluid viscosity, permeability parameter and visco-elastic parameter for various situations. The important finding of our study is that the effect of fluid viscosity parameter is to decrease the wall temperature profile significantly when flow is through a porous medium. Further, the effect of permeability parameter is to decrease the skin friction on the sheet.

An investigation has been conducted on the MHD Casson fluid and heat transfer over an unsteady stretching sheet with viscous dissipation effects. With suitable dimensionless variables, partial differential equations are reduced to ordinary differential equations, which are then solved by the homotopy analysis method. Dependences of flow characteristics on various parameters involved into the equations are obtained.

In this paper we analyze the flow and heat transfer of an MHD fluid over an impermeable stretching surface with variable thermal conductivity and non-uniform heat source/sink in the presence of partial slip. The governing partial differential equations of the problem are reduced to nonlinear ordinary differential equations by using a similarity transformation. The temperature boundary conditions are assumed to be linear functions of the distance from the origin. Analytical solutions of the energy equations for Prescribed Surface Temperature (PST) and Prescribed Heat Flux (PHF) cases are obtained in terms of a hypergeometric function, without applying the boundary-layer approximation. The effects of the governing parameters on the flow and heat transfer fields are presented through tables and graphs, and they are discussed. Furthermore, the obtained numerical results for the skin friction, wall-temperature gradient and wall temperature are analyzed and compared with the available results in the literature for special cases.

This paper investigates the effects of thermal radiation on the magnetohy-drodynamic (MHD) flow and heat transfer over a nonlinear shrinking porous sheet. The surface velocity of the shrinking sheet and the transverse magnetic field are assumed to vary as a power function of the distance from the origin. The temperature dependent viscosity and the thermal conductivity are also assumed to vary as an inverse function and a linear function of the temperature, respectively. A generalized similarity transformarion is used to reduce the governing partial differential equations to their nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations, and is solved numerically by using a finite difference scheme. The numerical results concern with the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the local skin-friction coefficient and the rate of the heat transfer at the porous sheet for different values of several physical parameters of interest.

In this paper we investigate the effects of temperature-dependent viscosity, thermal conductivity and internal heat generation/absorption on the MHD flow and heat transfer of a non-Newtonian UCM fluid over a stretching sheet. The governing partial differential equations are first transformed into coupled non-linear ordinary differential equation using a similarity transformation. The resulting intricate coupled non-linear boundary value problem is solved numerically by a second order finite difference scheme known as Keller-Box method for various values of the pertinent parameters. Numerical computations are performed for two different cases namely, zero and non-zero values of the fluid viscosity parameter. That is, 1/?? r ??0 and 1/?? r ??0 to get the effects of the magnetic field and the Maxwell parameter on the velocity and temperature fields, for several physical situations. Comparisons with previously published works are presented as special cases. Numerical results for the skin-friction co-efficient and the Nusselt number with changes in the Maxwell parameter and the fluid viscosity parameter are tabulated for different values of the pertinent parameters. The results obtained for the flow characteristics reveal many interesting behaviors that warrant further study on the non-Newtonian fluid phenomena, especially the UCM fluid phenomena. Maxwell fluid reduces the wall-shear stress.
