German nursing students' knowledge of and attitudes to HIV and AIDS: two decades after the first AIDS case This study describes German nursing students' (n=180) knowledge and attitudes relating to HIV/AIDS, their homophobia level, willingness to care for people with AIDS, and their approach to possible sexual risk behaviours. A questionnaire was used to collect the data (response rate 97.8%). The results indicated that the nursing students had a rather high knowledge level concerning AIDS. However, there were gaps of knowledge, such as regarding AIDS immunopathology or the symptoms of the disease. Single nursing students and those having cared for a person with AIDS had a more thorough knowledge about the disease. In general, the attitudes towards AIDS and people with AIDS were tolerant and positive, and homophobia was only found with a small minority. Students having positive attitudes towards people with HIV/AIDS had less homophobia compared to those having negative attitudes towards persons suffering from AIDS. Those with positive attitudes were more willing to care for patients with HIV/AIDS, while those with a high homophobia level were less willing to do so. In addition, students having a high AIDS knowledge level tended less towards negative attitudes and homophobia than those with a low level of knowledge. The implications of the research for nursing education will be discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to explore rural student nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about caring for people with HIV/AIDS. The results from this study were consistent with other past studies where judgmental attitudes toward patients with HIV/AIDS were demonstrated. Data indicate that nursing students' attitudes, beliefs, and knowledge about HIV/AIDS have not changed over the past decade. Based on these findings, many implications for nurse educators exist. Nurse educators need to examine approaches to teaching about HIV/AIDS that can increase knowledge and influence the actual treatment of individuals who have this disease. In addition, the focus for rural nursing programs should be on increasing the understanding of the impact of HIV/AIDS on rural communities and to help project future needs for HIV/AIDS-related services.  相似文献

Only limited pedagogical use has been made of information and communications technology (ICT) in nursing education in Norway. In this study the use of ICT was linked to assignments in the first year undergraduate nursing program and included four on-line discussions. There is evidence to suggest that on-line discussions can enhance the learning environment. The students' experiences of the on-line discussions are compared to those of the students participating in traditional group discussions. The results show little difference between the two groups' opinions of the discussions' fruitfulness and the ease in which they expressed their feelings, thoughts and ideas. However, there is a marked difference between the two groups regarding their experience of how the discussions affected the amount of contact between group members outside the discussions. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Although caring is a difficult entity to explain or define, many authors consider that caring is the central and unifying domain of nursing. It is important that nursing students understand what care is in order to be clear about what good nursing care is. This qualitative study was conducted to clarify Turkish nursing students' perception of caring. The sample was 19 last year undergraduate nursing students who volunteered to be involved in this study. Nursing students were asked to write incidents in which they observed nursing behaviours conducted in caring and noncaring ways. Then the students were interviewed to clarify why nursing behaviours that were addressed in their written incidents were considered as caring or noncaring. Data which obtain from students' reports and interviews were analyzed and themes of caring were formed into two groups: professional/helping relationship and technical competency.  相似文献

While more than 1,600 articles have been published in the nursing literature about HIV infection, only 54 (3%) have been research articles. The sparsity of nursing research related to HIV has partially resulted from methodological problems inherent in the implementation of research protocols with persons infected with HIV. The authors' focus is on methodological and ethical problems related to sampling patterns, informed consent, and protection of human subjects that have hindered the study of HIV infection. The underlying reasons for these problems as well as solutions and approaches to minimize or prevent the problems are presented.  相似文献

Since 1995, the Canadian Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (CANAC), the Canadian Nurses Association, the Victorian Order of Nurses of Canada, and the Ordre des Infirmières et Infirmiers du Québec have collaborated on several HIV/AIDS initiatives supported by the AIDS Care, Treatment, and Support Program, Health Canada (the national health organization). CANAC is the lead and sponsoring association in this collaboration. Phases I and II of the collaboration (December 1996 to March 1999) identified, promoted, and evaluated 17 nursing projects in HIV/AIDS care across Canada. This article describes the goals and outcomes of two of the collaboration's main projects: the identification of HIV/AIDS nursing research priorities and the mentorship program in HIV/AIDS care for Francophone nurses practicing in the province of Québec.  相似文献

BackgroundKnowledge provides a foundation for safe and effective nursing practice. However, most previous studies have focused on exploring nursing students' self-reported perceptions of, or confidence in, their level of patient safety knowledge, rather than examining their actual levels of knowledge.ObjectiveThe overarching objective of this study was to examine final year nursing students' levels of knowledge about key patient safety concepts.DesignA cross-sectional design was used for this study. Data collection was undertaken during 2018 using a web-based patient safety quiz with 45 multiple choice questions informed by the Patient Safety Competency Framework for Nursing Students. A Modified Angoff approach was used to establish a pass mark or ‘cut score’ for the quiz.Setting and participantsNursing students enrolled in the final year of a pre-registration nursing program in Australia or New Zealand were invited to participate in the study.ResultsIn total, 2011 final year nursing students from 23 educational institutions completed the quiz. Mean quiz scores were 29.35/45 or 65.23% (SD 5.63). Participants achieved highest scores in the domains of person-centred care and therapeutic communication, and lowest scores for infection prevention and control and medication safety.Based on the pass mark of 67.3% determined by the Modified Angoff procedure, 44.7% of students (n = 899) demonstrated passing performance on the quiz. For eight of the institutions, less than half of their students achieved a passing mark.ConclusionsGiven the pivotal role that nurses play in maintaining patient safety, the results from this quiz raise important questions about the preparation of nursing students for safe and effective clinical practice. The institutional results also suggest the need for increased curricula attention to patient safety.  相似文献

HIV/AIDS has had a profound impact on how care is provided to patients--raising both practice and ethical concerns. In this final installment in our series, we'll see how nurses are coping with these dilemmas, and how they feel about issues like mandatory HIV testing and practice restrictions on infected providers.  相似文献

Developing and establishing an advanced nursing practice is an essential step toward future-oriented nursing care. An action research process was initiated to establish advanced nursing practice at the HIV clinic of the outpatient department at the University Hospital Basel with the goal to offer advanced nursing care to patients. Participatory action research allows generating knowledge about a social system while at the same time tempts to promote social change. The most important goal is to constantly analyse, improve, and evaluate nursing care for patients and family caregivers. Advanced nursing practice in HIV/AIDS is based on solid knowledge regarding the illness and current therapies. Central concepts are caring, clinical experiences, evidence based practice, and patient preferences. Through a systematic step-by-step process, the nurses at the HIV clinic are being better educated and more experienced in these concepts. An essential aspect of advanced nursing practice is the specialization of each nurse in a self selected topic within HIV/AIDS care. These nurses now offer new services such as medication management and adherence support, health maintenance and prevention, and symptom management. This ongoing process of learning while establishing advanced nursing practice in HIV/AIDS, enables the nurses to face future changes in health care in a proactive way.  相似文献
