In this note, we first investigate the degrees of irreducible π-Brauer characters of a finite π-separable group G. Then we relate degrees of irreducible π-Brauer characters to class lengths of π-regular elements of G. Received: 4 April 2008  相似文献

If a finite group acts freely on a homology 3-sphere, then it has periodic cohomology. To say that a finite group F has periodic cohomology is equivalent to say that any Sylow subgroup of F of odd order is cyclic and a Sylow 2-subgroup of F is either cyclic or a quaternion group. In this paper we consider more generally smooth actions of finite groups G on homology 3-spheres which may have fixed points. We prove that any Sylow subgroup of G of odd order is either cyclic or the direct sum of two cyclic groups. Moreover, we show that if G has odd order, then it splits as a semidirect product of a subgroup A and a normal subgroup B such that B acts freely and there exist some simple closed curves in the homology 3-sphere which are fixed pointwise by some non-trivial element of A. We discuss the relation between these algebraic results and some classical constructions of the theory of 3-manifolds. Received 25 September 1997; in revised form 2 June 1998  相似文献

Let π be a set of prime numbers andG a finite π-separable group. Let θ be an irreducible π′-partial character of a normal subgroupN ofG and denote by Iπ′ (G‖θ), the set of all irreducible π′-partial characters Φ ofG such that θ is a constituent of ΦN. In this paper, we obtain some information about the vertices of the elements in Iπ′ (G‖θ). As a consequence, we establish an analogue of Fong's theorem on defect groups of covering blocks, for the vertices of the simple modules (in characteristicsp) of a finitep-solvable group lying over a fixed simple module of a normal subgroup.  相似文献

Let B be a block of the group algebra KG of a finite Group G over an algebraically closed field K. We prove that every degeneration of finite dimensional B-modules is given by short exact sequences if and only if B is of finite representation type. Received: 7 July 1997  相似文献

Let p be a prime divisor of the order of a finite group G. Thompson (1970, J. Algebra14, 129–134) has proved the following remarkable result: a finite group G is p-nilpotent if the degrees of all its nonlinear irreducible characters are divisible by p (in fact, in that case G is solvable). In this note, we prove that a group G, having only one nonlinear irreducible character of p′-degree is a cyclic extension of Thompson's group. This result is a consequence of the following theorem: A nonabelian simple group possesses two nonlinear irreducible characters χ1 and χ2 of distinct degrees such that p does not divide χ1(1)χ2(1) (here p is arbitrary but fixed). Our proof depends on the classification of finite simple groups. Some properties of solvable groups possessing exactly two nonlinear irreducible characters of p′-degree are proved. Some open questions are posed.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to prove the following theorem: If G is a finite group, then every G-module is isomorphic to the homology of a G-Moore space if and only if all Sylow subgroups of G are cyclic.  相似文献

In this paper we shall deal with a weak version of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem for G-isovariant maps, which we call the weak isovariant Borsuk-Ulam theorem. One of the results is that the weak isovariant Borsuk-Ulam theorem in linear G-spheres holds for an arbitrary compact Lie group G. On the contrary the weak isovariant Borsuk-Ulam theorem in semilinear G-(homology) spheres holds if and only if G is solvable. Received: 2 April 2002  相似文献

In representation theory of finite groups, there is a well-known and important conjecture due to M. Broué. He conjectures that, for any prime p, if a p-block A of a finite group G has an abelian defect group D, then A and its Brauer correspondent p-block B of NG(D) are derived equivalent. We demonstrate in this paper that Broué's conjecture holds for two non-principal 3-blocks A with elementary abelian defect group D of order 9 of the O'Nan simple group and the Higman-Sims simple group. Moreover, we determine these two non-principal block algebras over a splitting field of characteristic 3 up to Morita equivalence.  相似文献

Let M be an irreducible, orientable, closed 3-manifold with fundamental group G. We show that if the pro-p completion of G is infinite then G is either soluble-by-finite or contains a free subgroup of rank 2. Finite-sheeted covering mappings onto compact connected groups are studied. We show that for a covering mapping from a connected Hausdorff topological space onto a compact (in general, non-abelian) group there exists a topological group structure on the covering space such that the mapping becomes a homomorphism of groups. To prove this fact we construct an inverse system of covering mappings onto Lie groups which approximates the given covering mapping. As an application, it is shown that a covering mapping onto a compact connected abelian group G must be a homeomorphism provided that the character group of G admits division by degree of the mapping. We also get a criterion for triviality of coverings in terms of means and prove that each finite covering of G is equivalent to a polynomial covering.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a tower {A n G: n} ≥ 1 of finite-dimensional algebras; here, G represents an arbitrary finite group,d denotes a complex parameter, and the algebraA n G(d) has a basis indexed by ‘G-stable equivalence relations’ on a set whereG acts freely and has 2n orbits. We show that the algebraA n G(d) is semi-simple for all but a finite set of values ofd, and determine the representation theory (or, equivalently, the decomposition into simple summands) of this algebra in the ‘generic case’. Finally we determine the Bratteli diagram of the tower {A n G(d): n} ≥ 1 (in the generic case).  相似文献

We first review some invariant theoretic results about the finite subgroups of SU(2) in a quick algebraic way by using the McKay correspondence and quantum affine Cartan matrices. By the way it turns out that some parameters (a, b, h; p, q, r) that one usually associates with such a group and hence with a simply-laced Coxeter–Dynkin diagram have a meaningful definition for the non-simply-laced diagrams, too, and as a byproduct we extend Saito’s formula for the determinant of the Cartan matrix to all cases. Returning to invariant theory we show that for each irreducible representation i of a binary tetrahedral, octahedral, or icosahedral group one can find a homomorphism into a finite complex reflection group whose defining reflection representation restricts to i.  相似文献

Let G be a finite group, χ an irreducible complex character of G and A(χ) the block ideal of the group algebra ℚG relatedℴ χ. The aim of this paper is to study the group Aut (A(χ)) of all ring (or ℚ-algebra) automorphisms of A(χ). Especially we are interested in the existence of subgroups of Aut (A(χ)), which are isomorphic to a given subgroup Γ of the Galois group of the field of character values ℚ(χ) over the rationals. In this context we prove some results related to character values.  相似文献

On Hua-Tuan’s conjecture   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Let G be a finite group and |G| = pn, p be a prime. For 0 m n, sm(G) denotes the number of subgroups of of order pm of G. Loo-Keng Hua and Hsio-Fu Tuan have ever conjectured: for an arbitrary finite p-group G, if p > 2, then sm(G) ≡ 1, 1 + p, 1 + p + p2 or 1 + p + 2p2 (mod p3). In this paper, we investigate the conjecture, and give some p-groups in which the conjecture holds and some examples in which the conjecture does not hold.  相似文献

We give a generalisation of Deligne–Lusztig varieties for general and special linear groups over finite quotients of the ring of integers in a non-archimedean local field. Previously, a generalisation was given by Lusztig by attaching certain varieties to unramified maximal tori inside Borel subgroups. In this paper we associate a family of so-called extended Deligne–Lusztig varieties to all tamely ramified maximal tori of the group. Moreover, we analyse the structure of various generalised Deligne–Lusztig varieties, and show that the “unramified” varieties, including a certain natural generalisation, do not produce all the irreducible representations in general. On the other hand, we prove results which together with some computations of Lusztig show that for SL2(Fq???/(?2)), with odd q, the extended Deligne–Lusztig varieties do indeed afford all the irreducible representations.  相似文献
