The dissemination of knowledge is currently being improved by e-learning, which consists of a combination of teaching methodologies and computer-based tools. Recently e-learning environments have started to exploit web technology to provide a simple, flexible, distributed and open platform. In this paper we propose a model for an e-learning system, aiming at sharing both course contents and teaching materials, in order to provide students with a single and uniform set of concepts to be learned, and promoting active learning by allowing the construction of courses which are personalized in terms of both contents and teaching materials, selected according to each student’s needs and capabilities. A first, open-source prototype based on the proposed model has been implemented to validate the model.  相似文献

Abstract This paper describes a study which explored students' responses and reactions to a web-based environment supporting problem-based learning. The study was undertaken among undergraduate students in an Australian university. The findings revealed that while the majority of the students saw value to be gained from learning in a student-centred and collaborative setting, many expressed a preference for learning in the more conventional teacher-directed forms. The study also sought to explore the potential of the environment to develop problem-solving skills and to determine factors which impeded students' success and achievement. The results did not demonstrate any discernible development of problem-solving skills despite students' extensive experience and participation in problem-solving activities. The findings have suggested a number of important factors missing in the implemented setting including an organising strategy to aid students in the problem-solving process and adequate feedback to ensure reflection among the learners on the quality of the solutions they were developing.  相似文献

Effective performance measurement is an important task in the discipline of engineering management. With the support of City University of Hong Kong, a research project was initiated to develop a knowledge-based expert self-assessment (KES) training toolkit on measuring and assessing organisational performance based on the evaluation criteria of a renowned Business Excellence Model—the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA). This paper explains the development of and elaborates the system framework, requirements, design and validation of the toolkit. The project results shows that the toolkit could facilitate the teaching of students of engineering management courses by providing a stimulating learning environment and practical experiences in measuring and assessing enterprise performance. Incorporating the KES model and toolkit into the engineering management curriculum can provide students and industrial users with hands-on experience and insights of organisational PM.  相似文献

Engineering changes (ECs) are changes and/or modifications in forms, fits, functions, materials, dimensions, etc., of products and constituent components. ECs usually induce a series of downstream changes. Multiple disciplines and responsibilities are therefore involved in managing ECs. Previous investigations conducted by the authors and other researchers have shown that paper-based and standalone computerised EC management (ECM) systems have limited support for such intensive teamwork and close communication. This paper proposes to establish a web-based framework that supports ECM procedures and activities. A web-based ECM system is able to provide better information sharing, simultaneous data access and processing and more prompt communication and feedback. The amount of paperwork and the throughput time of managing ECs are significantly reduced while the effectiveness and the efficiency are substantially improved. This paper focuses on discussing the issues of design, development, and implementation of this prototype web-based ECM system.  相似文献

The concept of affective satisfaction is used to measure subjective feelings or impressions toward a product and to provide designers with knowledge about how well users are affectively satisfied. Numerous studies of affective satisfaction toward mobile devices have been conducted in laboratory environments. However, evaluating affective satisfaction whenever a new product is designed can be expensive. Therefore, this study proposes a method to develop a web-based survey system for evaluating affective satisfaction. A case study evaluating the affective satisfaction of thirty mobile phones was conducted by more than three hundred participants. The multiple linear regression technique was applied to build the relationship models between affective satisfaction and design features of the mobile phones. The proposed method can be used for a guideline to evaluate the affective satisfaction over the internet. Moreover, designers can use this method in product families other than mobile phones.

Relevance to industry

The results of this study can be used to evaluate affective satisfaction of consumer electronic products efficiently. Moreover, designers can get feedback on their prototypes of products through analyzing the evaluation results.  相似文献

Web-based image classification systems aim to provide users with an easy access to image classification function. The existing work mainly focuses on web-based unsupervised classification systems. This paper proposes a web-based supervised classification system framework which includes three modules: client, servlet and service. It comprehensively describes how to combine the procedures of supervised classification into the development of a web system. A series of methods are presented to realize the modules respectively. A prototype system of the framework is also implemented and a number of remote sensing (RS) images are tested on it. Experiment results show that the prototype is capable of accomplishing supervised classification of RS images on the Web. If appropriate algorithms and parameter values are used, the results of the web-based solution could be as accurate as the results of traditional desktop-based systems. This paper lays the foundation on both theoretical and practical aspects for the future development of operational web-based supervised classification systems.  相似文献

A great advantage of oriental clinic is its ability to dispense with high-tech medical appliances and identify symptoms of diseases by simply analyzing pulse waves of patients. If the technology of remote controlled electronic needle can be utilized, it can be applied anywhere anytime by a web-based system and the data of pulse and tongue diagnosis can be sent to doctors and patients, for example, wounded soldiers in a remote place can get treatment. As with the growing degree of office automation and diffuse use of electronic media, such as e-mails, written business communication is becoming a key element to promote synergies, relationships and disseminating information about products and services. Task recognition and the definition of strategies and suitable vocabularies are some of the activities that office workers deal with each time a communicative intent has to be effectively transferred and understood by a given addressee. This paper introduces a web-based intelligent training system based on the constructivism theory and self-directed learning paradigms for assisting company workers in the drafting business letters-writing task. A case-based engine suggests ad hoc rhetorical letters that users have the chance to adapt to their particular contexts and save them into user-defined case libraries.  相似文献

SMART: Student modeling approach for responsive tutoring   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
This paper describes a new student modeling paradigm called SMART. The premise is that a single, principled approach to student modeling, involving both theoretical and empirical methods, can render automated instruction more efficacious across a broad array of instructional domains. After defining key terms and discussing limitations to previous student modeling paradigms, I describe the SMART approach, as embedded within a statistics tutor called Stat Lady (Shute and Gluck, 1994). SMART works in conjunction with a tutor design where low-level knowledge and skills (i.e., curricular elements) are identified and separated into three main outcome types. Throughout the tutor, curricular elements with values below a pre-set mastery criterion are instructed, evaluated, and remediated, if necessary. The diagnostic part of the student model is driven by a series of regression equations based on the level of assistance the computer gives each person, per curriculum element. Remediation on a given element occurs when a subject fails to achieve mastery during assessment, which follows instruction. Remediation is precise because each element knows its location within the tutor where it is instructed and assessed. I end with a summary of results from two controlled evaluations of SMART examining the following research issues: (a) diagnostic validity, (b) individual differences in learning from Stat Lady, (c) affective perceptions of the tutorial experience, and (d) contributions of mastery and remediation to learning outcome and efficiency. Abstract   Internet technology has offered opportunities to develop ongoing assessment systems for classroom-based evaluation – on a daily basis. In this study, the researcher developed a web-based, curriculum-based measurement system with dynamic features which could generate different types of mathematics probes, track students' progress and provide diagnosed information as well as instructional suggestions for teachers. This paper explores the effects of the system on students' mathematical achievements. A total of 134 third-grade students (9- to 10-year-olds) in four classes participated. The teachers in all groups used the web-based curriculum-based measurement system with different types of curriculum-based measurement probes and growth modeling. The results indicated that the use of class-wide dynamic-growth modeling combined with mixed-type probes enabled the students to perform better than those using single-type probes. This outcome was not seen with the linear-growth modeling groups. The positive findings suggested that applying class-wide dynamic-growth modeling as well as the assessment of integrated mathematics competency in the instructional processes facilitated students' mathematics learning. Therefore, the web-based, curriculum-based measurement system was not only an assessment system, but also a tool for teachers to integrate instructional strategies based on curriculum-based measurement.  相似文献

Mental health problems have always existed in human life. However, factors such as lifestyle changes and industrialization affect modern human mental health. A common mental illness is depressive disorder, and a large number of patients are not even aware they have it. Due to the harmful influences of depressive disorder on quality of life, timely and accurate diagnosis is a matter of extreme prominence. The aim of this study is to design a web-based expert system for diagnosing depression using the fuzzy Delphi method by estimating the weights and importance of depression symptoms. Fuzzy Logic is adopted to calculate the level of depression. Two thresholds are obtained, namely lack of depression and severe depression. Finally, the level of depression for each person is estimated by virtue of the calculated value’s proximity to these two opposing points. Java Expert System Shell is used to build the knowledge base. Sensitivity and specificity analysis are performed with 238 participants. The proposed system appears helpful for everyone, from ordinary persons to specialists in medical environments. It can also be useful to train psychology students in the area of diagnostic reasoning.  相似文献

Mobile tourist guides have attracted considerable research interest during the past decade, resulting in numerous standalone and web-based mobile applications. Particular emphasis has been given to personalization of services, typically based on travel recommender systems used to assist tourists in choosing places to visit; these systems address an important aspect of personalization and hence reduce the information burden for the user. However, existing systems fail to exploit information, behaviours, evaluations or ratings of other tourists with similar interests, which would potentially provide ground for the cooperative production of improved tourist content and travel recommendations. In this paper, we extend this notion of travel recommender systems utilizing collaborative filtering techniques while also taking into account contextual information (such as the current user’s location, time, weather conditions and places already visited by the user) for deriving improved recommendations in pervasive environments. We also propose the use of wireless sensor network (WSN) installations around tourist sites for enabling precise localization and also providing mobile users convenient and inexpensive means for uploading tourist information and ratings about points of interest (POI) via their mobile devices. We also introduce the concept of ‘context-aware rating’, whereby user ratings uploaded through WSN infrastructures are weighted higher to differentiate among users that rate POIs using the mobile tourist guide application while onsite and others using the Internet away from the POI.  相似文献

ELECTRE is a project to build an intelligent tutoring system for learning basic electricity. This paper describes a student model based on the student's cognitive processes. This model includes, for each student, his/her domain knowledge and the specific heuristics. Moreover, it uses meta-knowledge of problem solving. Developing interactive history learning materials to facilitate historical thinking is one of the challenges in history teaching and learning. This study developed a web-based history educational system, which has used the acronym HES-SPATO (history educational system based on SPATO), to increase the understandability of history learning materials. SPATO (spatial, person, action/attribute, and temporal object) was designed to integrate the indispensable elements of history events such as space, person, action/attribute, and time. HES-SPATO also applied temporal logic to reason the temporal relationships between history events. Furthermore, it employed the GIS concept of information layers to develop the student interface. The findings of the experiments indicated that the use of HES-SPATO was effective in enhancing students’ history learning. The participants also showed positive attitudes toward the HES-SPATO system in terms of the perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude to use, intention to use, recall of web sites, and perceived usefulness of assistant tools. Although many functionalities have been added to the HES-SPATO system, there was no significant difference in system efficiency between HES-SPATO and the comparative system. These experimental results also guide the direction of future research.  相似文献

This paper addresses the architecture and implementation of a medical drawing management system. The system enables physicians to draw directly on a patient picture or built-in anatomical templates of a body part. It contains modules for querying patient data and managing associated drawings including sketching, uploading, and sharing features. The system adapts to embed Windows-based applications into web pages; the web-based applications contain Windows-based graphical tools and enable seamlessly incorporating necessary drawing modules into the web-based healthcare information system at National Taiwan University Hospital. The system provides a web-based sketching capability that effectively support practitioners’ daily operations, as well as the use of paperless, digitizing patient records, and ultimately, will improve the overall quality of healthcare.  相似文献
