Six ruminally and duodenally cannulated Holstein cows were used in a 6 x 6 Latin square design. The objective was to evaluate any potential interactions in site of nutrient digestion when neutral detergent fiber (NDF) from cottonseed was incrementally substituted for forage NDF (FNDF) from alfalfa silage and when starch availability was varied by feeding ground (G) or steam-flaked (SF) corn. Iso-NDF diets were forage control with G corn (21% FNDF), 5% whole cottonseed (WCS) with G or SF corn (18% FNDF), 10% WCS with G or SF corn (15% FNDF), and 15% WCS with G corn (12% FNDF). Ruminal or total tract digestibilities of organic matter (OM) or nonstructural carbohydrate (NSC) were unaffected, but efficiency of microbial protein synthesis decreased as WCS increased. Ruminal NDF digestibility was not affected despite a linear decrease in pH, but postruminal NDF digestibility decreased with increasing WCS. Ruminal digestibilities of OM and NSC were higher for SF than G corn but did not affect efficiency of microbial N synthesis. Dry matter intake increased quadratically with increasing level of WCS but decreased when SF replaced G corn. Milk yield did not differ across treatments. Milk fat percentage was affected quadratically and milk protein increased linearly with increasing WCS. Milk fat percentage decreased but milk protein was not affected when SF replaced G corn. Lack of an interaction between corn source and level of WCS substitution suggests that WCS was equally effective in maintaining ruminal fermentation and digestibility in diets varying in ruminal starch availability.  相似文献

The effects of increasing concentrations of dried, pelleted beet pulp substituted for high-moisture corn on digestion and ruminal digestion kinetics were evaluated using eight ruminally and duodenally cannulated multiparous Holstein cows in a duplicated 4 x 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Cows were 79 +/- 17 (mean +/- SD) d in milk at the beginning of the experiment. Experimental diets with 40% forage (corn silage and alfalfa silage) and 60% concentrate contained 0, 6.1, 12.1, or 24.3% beet pulp substituted for high-moisture corn on a dry matter basis. Diet concentrations of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and starch were 24.3 and 34.6% (0% beet pulp), 26.2 and 30.5% (6% beet pulp), 28.0 and 26.5% (12% beet pulp), and 31.6 and 18.4% (24% beet pulp), respectively. Ruminal dry matter pool decreased and NDF turnover rate increased as dietary beet pulp content increased. Potentially digestible NDF was digested more extensively and at a faster rate in the rumen with increasing beet pulp, resulting in increased total tract NDF digestibility. Passage rates of potentially digestible NDF and of indigestible NDF were not affected by treatment. True ruminal digestibility of starch decreased with increasing beet pulp substitution. This was caused by a linear increase in starch passage rate, possibly because of increasing ruminal fill, and a linear decrease in digestion rate of starch in the rumen, possibly because of reduced amylolytic enzyme activity for lower-starch diets. Although true ruminal starch digestibility decreased when more beet pulp was fed, whole tract starch digestibility was not affected because of compensatory digestion of starch in the intestines. Due to more thorough digestion of fiber in diets containing more beet pulp, whole-tract digestibility of organic matter increased linearly, and intake of digestible organic matter was not affected. Partially replacing high-moisture corn with beet pulp in low-forage diets increased fiber digestibility without reducing whole-tract starch digestibility.  相似文献

The effects of digestibility of corn silage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and dietary NDF content on ruminal digestion kinetics, site of nutrient digestion, and microbial N production efficiency were evaluated with eight multiparous high producing dairy cows in a duplicated 4 x 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Experimental diets contained corn silage from a brown midrib (bm3) hybrid or its isogenic normal control at two concentrations of dietary NDF (29 and 38%). The NDF digestibility estimated by a 30-h in vitro fermentation was higher for bm3 corn silage by 9.4 units (55.9 vs. 46.5%). Neither ruminal nor total tract NDF digestibility was affected by corn silage treatment. The bm3 corn silage diet decreased starch digestibility in the rumen and in the total tract, but increased postruminal starch digestibility compared with control diet. The bm3 corn silage diets increased microbial N flow to the duodenum and tended to decrease ruminal ammonia concentration. Microbial efficiency was greater for cows fed bm3 corn silage in spite of lower ruminal pH. Higher efficiency of microbial nitrogen production might be attributed to faster passage rate of NDF for cows fed bm3 corn silage compared with those fed control corn silage. Higher in vitro NDF digestibility might predict enhanced NDF fragility and ease of NDF hydrolysis in vivo. Enhanced in vitro NDF digestibility does not necessarily result in increased NDF digestibility either in the rumen or in the total tract, but possibly increases rate of passage and DMI, improving efficiency of microbial N production.  相似文献

The effects of digestibility of corn silage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and dietary NDF content on feeding behavior, dry matter intake (DMI), and energy utilization were evaluated with eight multiparous high producing dairy cows in a duplicated 4 x 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Experimental diets contained corn silage from a brown midrib (bm3) hybrid or its isogenic normal control at two concentrations of dietary NDF (29 and 38%). Both low NDF diets and bm3 corn silage treatments increased DMI and milk yield. However, an interaction between corn silage treatment and dietary NDF content was observed for meal size and for interval between meals, implying that different mechanisms regulating DMI dominate depending on the fermentation characteristics of diets. The bm3 treatment depressed milk fat concentration when fed in a low NDF diet. The bm3 corn silage increased solids-corrected milk yield, but did not affect daily body weight gain compared with control, whereas low NDF diets increased daily body weight gain, but did not affect solids-corrected milk yield compared to high NDF diets. Both bm3 treatments and low NDF diets reduced ruminal pH, but low NDF treatments increased fluctuation of ruminal pH and bm3 treatments did not. Feeding bm3 corn silage increased the energy utilized for milk production, possibly because of a consistent supply of metabolic fuels from the rumen. The beneficial effects of bm3 corn silage on productivity of lactating cows were greater for the cows fed a high NDF diet.  相似文献

Twenty Holstein cows were used in an 8-wk randomized block design study to determine the effects of replacing corn silage with ryegrass silage on nutrient intake, apparent digestion, milk yield, and milk composition. The 8-wk trial consisted of a 2-wk preliminary period followed by a 6-wk collection period. Experimental diets were formulated to provide 55.5% of the total dry matter (DM) as forage. Ryegrass silage was substituted for 0, 35, 65, and 100% of DM provided by corn silage. Dietary concentrations of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) increased as ryegrass silage replaced corn silage. Intake of DM and crude protein (CP) was similar for all treatments, but intake of NDF and ADF increased linearly as ryegrass silage replaced corn silage. Apparent digestibility of DM declined linearly, whereas digestibility of CP increased linearly as ryegrass silage replaced corn silage. Apparent digestibility of NDF and ADF was highest for the diets in which ryegrass or corn silages provided all of the forage, resulting in a quadratic response. Dry matter intake was not different among treatments. Yield of milk, fat, and protein increased as ryegrass silage replaced corn silage. No differences were observed for body weight change, body condition score, and serum urea nitrogen concentration, but serum glucose concentration increased with increasing dietary proportion of ryegrass silage. These results indicate that substituting ryegrass silage for a portion or all of the corn silage in diets fed to lactating dairy cows can improve yield of milk and components.  相似文献

Effects of physically effective (pe) neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of dairy cow diets on nutrient intakes, site and extent of digestion, microbial protein synthesis and milk production were evaluated in a double 3 x 3 Latin square design using 6 lactating dairy cows with ruminal and duodenal cannulas. During each of 3 periods, cows were offered 1 of 3 diets that were chemically similar but varied in peNDF content (high, medium, and low) by altering corn silage particle length. The peNDF contents were determined using the Penn State Particle Separator and were 11.5, 10.3, and 8.9%, for the high, medium, and low diets, respectively, and the physical effectiveness factors for the long, medium, and fine silages were 84.1, 72.6, and 67.2%, respectively. Increased forage particle length increased intake of peNDF but did not affect intakes of nutrients including dry matter, NDF, starch, and nitrogen. Except for starch, apparent digestibilities of nutrients in the total tract were linearly increased with increasing dietary peNDF. Fiber digestion was affected by dietary peNDF to a greater extent than were the other nutrients. However, increased digestibility due to increased dietary peNDF did not significantly improve milk production or milk composition. Increased dietary peNDF also increased numerically rumen microbial protein synthesis due to increased amount of organic matter fermented in the rumen. These results indicate that increasing the peNDF content of a corn silage based diet improves digestibility, especially digestibility of fiber, in the total tract. Dietary particle size, expressed as peNDF, is positively associated with nutrient digestibility when level of peNDF in the diet is low.  相似文献

Interactions of endosperm type of corn grain and the brown midrib 3 (bm3) mutation in corn silage on ruminal kinetics and site of nutrient digestion of lactating dairy cows were evaluated. Eight ruminally and duodenally cannulated cows (72 +/- 8 d in milk; mean +/- SD) were used in a duplicated 4 x 4 Latin square design experiment with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. Treatments were corn grain endosperm type (floury or vitreous) and corn silage type (bm3 or isogenic normal). Diets contained 26% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and 30% starch. Interactions of treatments were not observed for any measure of digestibility, but digestion kinetics of starch and fiber did interact to affect digestible organic matter intake by affecting dry matter intake. Rate of ruminal starch digestion was faster and rate of ruminal starch passage tended to be slower in diets containing corn grain with floury vs. vitreous endosperm, resulting in a mean increase of 22 units for ruminal starch digestibility. Although compensatory postruminal starch digestion decreased differences among treatments for total tract starch digestibility, starch entering the duodenum was more digestible for grain with floury endosperm compared with vitreous grain, resulting in greater total tract starch digestibility for floury compared with vitreous corn grain. Fermentation rate of potentially digestible NDF was not affected by either bm3 corn silage or greater ruminal starch digestion of floury grain. Brown midrib corn silage increased total tract NDF digestibility vs. control silage by numerically increasing ruminal and postruminal digestibility of NDF. Endosperm type of corn grain greatly influences site of starch digestion and should be considered when formulating diets.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine how feeding diets that differed in dietary neutral detergent fiber (NDF) concentration and in vitro NDF digestibility affects dry matter (DM) intake, ruminal fermentation, and milk production in early lactation dairy cows. Twelve rumen-cannulated, multiparous Holstein cows averaging 38 ± 15 d (±standard deviation) in milk, and producing 40 ± 9 kg of milk daily, were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 28-d periods. Treatment diets were arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial with 28 or 32% dietary NDF (DM basis) and 2 levels of straw NDF digestibility: 1) LD, untreated wheat straw (77% NDF, 41% NDF digestibility) or 2) HD, anhydrous NH3-treated wheat straw (76% NDF, 62% NDF digestibility). All 4 diets consisted of wheat straw, alfalfa silage, corn silage, and a concentrate mix of cracked corn grain, corn gluten meal, 48% soybean meal, and vitamins and minerals. Wheat straw comprised 8.5% DM of the 28% NDF diets and 16% DM of the 32% NDF diets. Cows fed 28% NDF and HD diets produced more milk, fat, and protein than those consuming 32% NDF or LD diets. Dry matter intake was greater for cows consuming 28% NDF diets, but intakes of DM and total NDF were not affected by in vitro NDF digestibility. Intake of digestible NDF was greater for cows consuming HD diets. Ruminal fermentation was not affected by feeding diets that differed in NDF digestibility. Ruminal NDF passage rate was slower for cows fed HD than LD. No interactions of dietary NDF concentration and in vitro NDF digestibility were observed for any parameter measured. Regardless of dietary NDF concentration, increased in vitro NDF digestibility improved intake and production in early lactation dairy cows.  相似文献

A dual-purpose hybrid and a hybrid selected for high neutral detergent fiber (NDF) concentration were harvested as corn silage. The dual-purpose silage (DPCS) had 42% NDF and 35.4% in vitro (30 h) NDF digestibility and the high fiber silage (HFCS) had 49% NDF and 40.1% in vitro NDF digestibility. Two diets (dry matter basis) had 45% DPCS or HFCS and 46% corn grain-based concentrate (dietary NDF was 29 and 32%, respectively), a third diet had 33% HFCS and 58% corn-based concentrate (27% dietary NDF), and a fourth diet had 33% DPCS and 58% concentrate that contained soybean hulls (32% dietary NDF). All diets contained 9% alfalfa silage. Diets were fed to eight midlactation Holstein cows in a 4 x 4 Latin square with 28 d periods. No differences among treatments were observed for milk yield (34.1 kg/d), dry matter intake (23.7 kg/d), and yield and concentration of milk protein. Cows fed the diet with 33% HFCS tended to have lower milk fat percentage than cows fed the 45% DPCS diet. Total digestible nutrients (measured using total collection) tended to be lower for the 33% DPCS diet than for the 45% DPCS diet. In vivo digestibility of NDF tended to be lower for the 33% HFCS diet than the 45% DPCS diet, but digestibility of starch in the two diets with HFCS was higher than the 45% DPCS diet. The lack of any substantial differences in responses suggest that the HFCS was equal to the DPCS when fed at 45% of the diet dry matter (53.5% total forage). When HFCS replaced DPCS so that NDF was similar between diets, milk fat percentage was reduced and ruminal propionate was increased. Increasing dietary NDF by adding soybean hulls to a diet based on DPCS reduced digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, and protein, and resulted in lower energy balance than the 45% DPCS diet.  相似文献

Five Holstein cows with ruminal cannulas were used in a 5 x 5 Latin square design to determine the effect of replacing forage NDF with soyhull NDF and varying concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates on nutrient digestion and milk production. Diets in which NDF percentage from forage (corn silage: alfalfa hay, 1:1) was 80 (control), 70, or 60 were formulated by substituting soyhulls for forage; total forage was 43.2, 36.7, and 31.1% of the diets, respectively, but total NDF was 31%. Nonstructural carbohydrates were formulated to be 47 (control), 35, or 25% by substituting soyhulls, roasted soybeans, and Ca soaps for concentrate. Ruminal acetate: propionate ratio decreased linearly when diets lower in forage NDF were fed, but it increased quadratically when dietary nonstructural carbohydrates were reduced. Apparent digestibility of OM increased quadratically, but NDF digestibility and lactation performance were unaffected when diets lower in forage NDF were fed. Digestibility of NDF increased linearly when nonstructural carbohydrates were reduced, perhaps because of greater digestibility of soyhull NDF and smaller negative associative effects. Fat from soybeans and Ca soaps was increased as nonstructural carbohydrates decreased. Added fat probably increased fatty acid digestibility and decreased milk protein percentage. Greater FCM production without correspondingly greater feed intake or BW loss increased feed efficiency as nonstructural carbohydrates decreased. In dairy rations containing soyhulls, 60% of dietary NDF from forage should maintain lactation performance, and decreasing nonstructural carbohydrates to 25 to 35% of feed DM, coupled with adding dietary fat, may decrease negative associative effects and improve efficiency of milk production.  相似文献

Our study investigated the effect of a linear increase in level of ruminally fermentable carbohydrate, at a constant level of dietary starch and fiber, on performance, microbial N yield, chewing activity, and ruminal pH of midlactation dairy cows. Eight cows (53 DIM) were assigned to four treatments in a double 4 x 4 Latin square. Diets consisted of increasing levels of refined cornstarch (0, 5.9, 11.9, and 17.9% of diet dry matter) replacing dry cracked, shelled corn so that increasing amounts of dietary starch originated from refined cornstarch. Corn gluten feed was used to balance diets for similar NDF content. The four diets averaged 17.9% CP, 27.2% NDF, 18.7% ADF, and 31.1% starch (dry matter basis). Diets were fed for ad libitum intake and had a forage to concentrate ratio of 40:60. Forage was coarsely chopped (13.7 mm mean particle size) alfalfa silage. Daily dry matter intake averaged 26.0 kg and tended (P = 0.08) to increase quadratically with increasing level of refined cornstarch. Milk production averaged 38.9 kg/d and milk fat percentage tended (P = 0.08) to decrease linearly, whereas percentage of protein increased quadratically, with increasing level of refined cornstarch. Yield of components and energy corrected milk was similar across diets. Total tract digestibility of starch increased linearly from 85.1% to 92.4% with increasing level of refined cornstarch. Microbial yield was unaffected by diet and averaged 371.1 g N/d. Time spent eating decreased linearly from 329 to 308 min/d when level of refined cornstarch was increased, but rumination time was unaffected. Ruminal concentration and proportion of acetate decreased linearly while concentration and proportion of propionate increased linearly with increasing level of refined cornstarch. Mean ruminal pH, time spent below pH 5.8 (h), and area below pH 5.8 (h x pH units/d) were unaffected by level of refined cornstarch and averaged 5.97, 8.4, and 2.9, respectively. Increasing the level of carbohydrates fermented in the rumen by replacing dry cracked corn with refined cornstarch (up to 57% of dietary starch) did not compromise rumen fermentation or affect performance of midlactation dairy cows.  相似文献

The effect of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) degradability of corn silage in diets containing lower and higher NDF concentrations on lactational performance, nutrient digestibility, and ruminal characteristics in lactating Holstein cows was measured. Eight ruminally cannulated Holstein cows averaging 91 ± 4 (standard error) days in milk were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design with 21-d periods (7-d collection periods). Dietary treatments were formulated to contain either conventional (CON; 48.6% 24-h NDF degradability; NDFD) or brown midrib-3 (BM3; 61.1% 24-h NDFD) corn silage and either lower NDF (LNDF) or higher NDF (HNDF) concentration (32.0 and 35.8% of ration dry matter, DM) by adjusting the dietary forage content (52 and 67% forage, DM basis). The dietary treatments were (1) CON-LNDF, (2) CON-HNDF, (3) BM3-LNDF, and (4) BM3-HNDF. Data were analyzed as a factorial arrangement of diets within a replicated Latin square design with the MIXED procedure of SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC) with fixed effects of NDFD, NDF, NDFD × NDF, period(square), and square. Cow within square was the random effect. Time and its interactions with NDFD and NDF were included in the model when appropriate. An interaction between NDFD and NDF content resulted in the HNDF diet decreasing dry matter intake (DMI) with CON corn silage but not with BM3 silage. Cows fed the BM3 corn silage had higher DMI than cows fed the CON corn silage, whereas cows fed the HNDF diet consumed less DM than cows fed the LNDF diet. Cows fed the BM3 diets had greater energy-corrected milk yield, higher milk true protein content, and lower milk urea nitrogen concentration than cows fed CON diets. Additionally, cows fed the BM3 diets had greater total-tract digestibility of organic matter and NDF than cows fed the CON diets. Compared with CON diets, the BMR diets accelerated ruminal NDF turnover. When incorporated into higher NDF diets, corn silage with greater in vitro 24-h NDFD and lower undegradable NDF at 240 h of in vitro fermentation (uNDF240) allowed for greater DMI intake than CON. In contrast, for lower NDF diets, NDFD of corn silage did not affect DMI, which suggests that a threshold level of inclusion of higher NDFD corn silage is necessary to observe enhanced lactational performance. Results suggest that there is a maximum gut fill of dietary uNDF240 and that higher NDFD corn silage can be fed at greater dietary concentrations.  相似文献

Various diet formulation strategies were evaluated to alleviate milk fat depression using a corn milling product (CMP) that contained approximately 28% crude protein, 34% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and 12% starch (dry basis). The control diet comprised mostly corn silage, alfalfa silage, corn grain, and soybean meal and contained approximately 22% forage NDF (fNDF), 28% total NDF, and 33% starch. Another diet included 25% CMP that replaced corn grain and soybean meal and contained 27% starch and 33% NDF. Two other diets included 25 or 40% CMP that replaced forage and concentrate and contained 19 and 17% fNDF, 31 and 32% total NDF, and 30 and 28% starch, respectively. Diets were fed to 16 mid-lactation Holstein cows in 4 replicated 4 × 4 Latin squares. Milk fat percentage was low for the control diet (2.9%) but increased to 3.5% when cows were fed the diet with 25% CMP that replaced concentrate. Cows fed diets with 25 or 40% CMP that replaced forage and concentrate also had low milk fat percentages (3.0 and 2.9%, respectively). Intake was lowest for cows fed the control diet. Milk yield was reduced when CMP replaced only concentrate but because of the substantial increase in milk fat, the yield of energy-corrected milk was greater. Calculated energy use (maintenance+milk+body weight change) divided by dry matter intake was similar for the control and for the diet in which CMP replaced only concentrate, but it decreased linearly as increasing amounts of CMP replaced both forage and concentrate. A quadratic equation using the ratio of dietary starch to fNDF was the best predictor of milk fat percentage (ratios >1.4 were associated with reduced milk fat). Overall, CMP was effective at alleviating milk fat depression when it replaced corn grain but not when it replaced forage and concentrate.  相似文献

Barley silages varying in theoretical chop length were used to evaluate the effects of physically effective (pe) neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of dairy cow diets on nutrient intakes, site and extent of digestion, microbial protein synthesis, and milk production. The experiment was designed as a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square using 6 lactating dairy cows with ruminal and duodenal cannulas. During each of 3 periods, cows were offered 1 of 3 diets (low, medium, and high peNDF) obtained using barley silage that varied in particle length: fine (theoretical chop length of 4.8 mm), medium (equal proportions of long and fine silages), and long (theoretical chop length of 9.5 mm). The peNDF contents were determined by multiplying the proportion (dry matter basis) of feed retained on the 2 screens (8 and 19 mm) of the Penn State Particle Separator by the NDF content of the diet, and were 10.5, 11.8, and 13.8% for the low, medium, and high diets, respectively. Increased forage particle length linearly increased intake of peNDF but intakes of dry matter, organic matter, starch, and N were highest for cows fed the medium peNDF diet. Digestibilities of organic matter, NDF, and acid detergent fiber in the total tract were linearly decreased with increasing dietary peNDF, although total digestibility of starch and N was not affected by the treatments. Nevertheless, decreased digestibility due to increased dietary peNDF did not reduce milk production or milk composition because the cows were in mid to late lactation. Ruminal microbial protein synthesis and microbial efficiency were numerically higher with the low peNDF than with the medium or high peNDF diets. These results indicate that increasing the peNDF content of a diet containing barley silage decreases fiber digestibility in the total tract and lowers microbial efficiency. Therefore, the benefits of increasing dietary particle size, expressed as peNDF, on reducing the risk of ruminal acidosis should be weighed against potentially negative effects on efficiency of feed use.  相似文献

Corn silage, an important forage fed to dairy cows in the United States, is energy rich but protein poor. The objectives of this experiment were to investigate the effects on production of milk and milk components of feeding corn silage-based diets with 4 levels of dietary crude protein (CP) plus rumen-protected methionine (RPM). Thirty-six cows were blocked by days in milk into 9 squares and randomly assigned to 9 balanced 4 × 4 Latin squares with four 4-wk periods. All diets were formulated to contain, as a percent of dry matter (DM), 50% corn silage, 10% alfalfa silage, 4% soyhulls, 2.4% mineral-vitamin supplement, and 30% neutral detergent fiber. Supplemental RPM (Mepron, Evonik Corp., Kennesaw, GA) was added to all diets to maintain a Lys:Met ratio of 3.1 in digested AA. Ground high-moisture corn was reduced and soybean meal (SBM) plus RPM increased to give diets containing, on average, 11% CP (28% corn, 31% starch, 6% SBM, 4 g of RPM/d), 13% CP (23% corn, 29% starch, 10% SBM, 8 g of RPM/d), 15% CP (19% corn, 26% starch, 15% SBM, 10 g of RPM/d), and 17% CP (14% corn, 24% starch, 19% SBM, 12 g of RPM/d). Data from the last 14 d of each period were analyzed using the mixed procedures in SAS (SAS Institute Inc., Cary, NC). With the exception of milk fat and milk lactose content, we found no significant effects of diet on all production traits. We did note linear responses to dietary CP concentration for intake, production of milk and milk components, and MUN. Cows fed the 11% CP diet had reduced DM intake, lost weight, and yielded less milk and milk components. Mean separation indicated that only true protein yield was lower on 13% CP than on 17% dietary CP, but not different between 15 and 17% CP. This indicated no improvement in production of milk and milk components above 15% CP. Quadratic trends for yield of milk, energy-corrected milk, and true protein suggested that a dietary CP concentration greater than 15% may be necessary to maximize production or, alternately, that a plateau was reached and no further CP was required. Although diet influenced apparent digestibility of DM, organic matter, and neutral detergent fiber, digestibility did not increase linearly with dietary CP. However, we observed linear and quadratic effects of dietary CP on acid detergent fiber digestibility. As expected, we found a linear effect of dietary CP on apparent N digestibility and on fecal and urinary N excretion, but no effect of diet on estimated true N digestibility. Ruminal concentrations of ammonia, total AA, peptides, and branched-chain volatile fatty acids also increased linearly with dietary CP. Quadratic responses indicated that 14.0 to 14.8% CP was necessary to optimize digestion and energy utilization. Overall results indicated that, when RPM was added to increase Lys:Met to 3.1, 15% CP was adequate for lactating dairy cows fed corn silage diets supplemented with SBM and secreting about 40 kg of milk/d; N excretion was lower than at 17% CP but with no reduction in yield of milk and milk components.  相似文献

Effects offorage particle size measured as physically effective NDF and ratio of alfalfa silage to alfalfa hay of diets on feed intake, chewing activity, particle size reduction, salivary secretion, ruminal fermentation, and milk production of dairy cows were evaluated using a 4 x 4 Latin square design with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments. The diets consisted of 60% barley-based concentrate and 40% forage, comprised either of 50:50 or 25:75 of alfalfa silage:alfalfa hay, and alfalfa hay was either chopped or ground. Various methods were used to determine physically effective NDF content of the diets. Cows surgically fitted with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were offered ad libitum access to these total mixed diets. The physically effective NDF content of the diets was significantly lower when measured using the Penn State Particle Separator than when measured based on particles retained on 1.18-mm screen. Intake of DM was increased by increasing the ratio of silage to hay but was not affected by physically effective NDF content of diets. Eating time (hours per day) was not affected by the physically effective NDF content of diets, although cows spent more time eating per unit of DM or NDF when consuming high versus low alfalfa hay diets. Ruminating time (hours per day) was increased with increased physically effective NDF content of the diets. Rumen pH was affected more by changing dietary particle size than altering the ratio of silage to hay. Feeding chopped hay instead of ground hay improved ruminal pH status: time during which ruminal pH was above 6.2 increased and time during which ruminal pH was below 5.8 decreased. Milk production was increased by feeding higher concentrations of alfalfa silage due to increased DM intake, but was not affected by dietary particle size. Feed particle size, expressed as mean particle length or physically effective NDF was moderately correlated with ruminating time but not with eating time. Although physically effective NDF and chewing time were not correlated to mean rumen pH, they were negatively correlated to the area between the curve and pH 5.8, indicating a positive effect on reducing the risk of acidosis. Milk fat content was correlated to rumen pH but not to physically effective NDF or chewing activity. These results indicate that increasing physically effective NDF content of the diets increased chewing activity and improved rumen pH status but had limited effect on milk production and milk fat content.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of dietary replacement of corn silage (CS) with 2 cultivars of forage millet silages [i.e., regular millet (RM) and sweet millet (SM)] on milk production, apparent total-tract digestibility, and ruminal fermentation characteristics of dairy cows. Fifteen lactating Holstein cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square experiment and fed (ad libitum) a high-forage total mixed ration (68:32 forage:concentrate ratio). Dietary treatments included CS (control), RM, and SM diets. Experimental silages constituted 37% of each diet DM. Three ruminally fistulated cows were used to determine the effect of dietary treatments on ruminal fermentation and total-tract nutrient utilization. Relative to CS, RM and SM silages contained 36% more crude protein, 66% more neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and 88% more acid detergent fiber. Cows fed CS consumed more dry matter (DM; 24.4 vs. 22.7 kg/d) and starch (5.7 vs. 3.7 kg/d), but less NDF (7.9 vs. 8.7 kg/d) than cows fed RM or SM. However, DM, starch and NDF intakes were not different between forage millet silage types. Feeding RM relative to CS reduced milk yield (32.7 vs. 35.2 kg/d), energy-corrected milk (35.8 vs. 38.0 kg/d) and SCM (32.7 vs. 35.3 kg/d). However, cows fed SM had similar milk, energy-corrected milk, and solids-corrected milk yields than cows fed CS or RM. Milk efficiency was not affected by dietary treatments. Milk protein concentration was greatest for cows fed CS, intermediate for cows fed SM, and lowest for cows fed RM. Milk concentration of solids-not-fat was lesser, whereas milk urea nitrogen was greater for cows fed RM than for those fed CS. However, millet silage type had no effect on milk solids-not-fat and milk urea nitrogen levels. Concentrations of milk fat, lactose and total solids were not affected by silage type. Ruminal pH and ruminal NH3-N were greater for cows fed RM and SM than for cows fed CS. Total-tract digestibility of DM (average = 67.9%), NDF (average = 53.9%), crude protein (average = 63.3%), and gross energy (average = 67.9%) were not influenced by dietary treatments. It was concluded that cows fed CS performed better than those fed RM or SM likely due to the higher starch and lower NDF intakes. However, no major differences were noted between the 2 forage millet silage cultivars.  相似文献

The effects of replacing chopped alfalfa hay with alfalfa silage in a fine barley grain and alfalfa-based total mixed ration (TMR) were evaluated. Diets contained (dry matter basis) 53.0% commercial energy supplement, 10.3% commercial protein supplement, and 9.7% corn silage. Diets varied in inclusion of chopped alfalfa hay and alfalfa silage, and contained either 20.0% chopped alfalfa hay and 7.0% alfalfa silage, 10.0% chopped alfalfa hay and 17.0% alfalfa silage, or 27.0% alfalfa silage. Contents of crude protein, neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber, and minerals did not differ among diets. Replacing chopped alfalfa hay with alfalfa silage decreased dietary dry matter, and increased dietary soluble protein and physical effective NDF calculated as the proportion of dietary NDF retained by the 8- and 19-mm screens of the Penn State Particle Separator (peNDF(NDF)) from 13.3 to 15.6% DM. Replacing chopped alfalfa hay with alfalfa silage did not affect dry matter intake, rumen pH, rumen volatile fatty acids, blood lactate, milk fat, and milk protein percentage, but did decrease blood glucose, tended to increase blood urea, and numerically decreased milk yield and milk protein yield. A wider range in peNDF(NDF) and a higher inclusion of corn silage might have resulted in greater differences in rumen fermentation and milk production among diets. The pH of rumen fluid samples collected 4 h after feeding varied from 5.90 to 5.98, and milk fat percentage varied from 2.50 to 2.60% among diets. These values suggest that mild subacute ruminal acidosis was induced by all diets.  相似文献

The effects of canola fat on digestion and metabolism were investigated by incorporating 0, 4.5, 9, 13.2, or 17.4% Jet-Sploded canola seed into a diet containing a 60:40 (DM) concentrate:forage ratio. The diets contained 16.5% CP, 30% alfalfa silage, and 10% whole-crop oat silage on a DM basis and were fed for ad libitum consumption as TMR to 10 ruminally cannulated Holstein cows in early lactation. Jet-Sploded canola seed supplementation did not change ruminal pH or NH3 N concentrations, but VFA concentrations declined with increasing level of inclusion. Apparent digestibilities of DM, OM, CP, NDF, and ADF were unaffected by level of inclusion of Jet-Sploded canola seed, but ether extract digestibility declined linearly, which resulted in similar ether extract absorption across the three diets supplemented with canola fat. Based on in sacco data, the percentages of ruminal digestion of OM and CP declined with increasing inclusion of Jet-Sploded canola seed. Plasma glucose and FFA concentrations tended to respond in a quadratic fashion, plasma insulin concentration declined linearly, and plasma glucagon and somatotropin concentrations were unaffected by dietary treatment. The results indicate that a positive productive response may be expected from dietary inclusion of about 5% Jet-Sploded canola seed, but the benefits of increased energy density associated with higher inclusion levels may be offset by reduced availability of energy in the rumen and decreased fat digestibility postruminally. The substantial effects of time postfeeding on ruminal fermentation and on concentrations of plasma hormone and metabolites in animals fed TMR demonstrate that infrequent sampling can result in misleading results and, thus, invalid interpretation of the influence of dietary fat on these parameters.  相似文献
