The operation of solid oxide fuel cells on various fuels, such as natural gas, biogas and gases derived from biomass or coal gasification and distillate fuel reforming has been an active area of SOFC research in recent years. In this study, we develop a theoretical understanding and thermodynamic simulation capability for investigation of an integrated SOFC reformer system operating on various fuels. The theoretical understanding and simulation results suggest that significant thermal management challenges may result from the use of different types of fuels in the same integrated fuel cell reformer system. Syngas derived from coal is simulated according to specifications from high-temperature entrained bed coal gasifiers. Diesel syngas is approximated from data obtained in a previous NFCRC study of JP-8 and diesel operation of the integrated 25 kW SOFC reformer system. The syngas streams consist of mixtures of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen. Although the SOFC can tolerate a wide variety in fuel composition, the current analyses suggest that performance of integrated SOFC reformer systems may require significant operating condition changes and/or system design changes in order to operate well on this variety of fuels.  相似文献

The energy transition can also be promoted by the sustainable use of biomass. Residual biomass in the Mediterranean areas can be exploited to a greater extent through highly efficient fuel cell systems. The Direct Biomass-SOFC project is based on a direct coupling between biomass power supply and SOFC tubular cells. This research project stems from the need to cover the electricity demand, avoiding the use of non-renewable sources. It will be investigated the unused or little-used biomass sources that can be exploited from the Mediterranean area.To this purpose, analyses were conducted to model a SOFC tubular cell stack by investigating the optimal configuration. The basic objective is to design a SOFC tubular cell stack, fed by syngas to produce at least 200 W. Two configurations were chosen: a square and a circular arrangement. Another objective of the study is to choose the best temperature control system. It have been selected a pressurised water system and an air system. The results show that the best performance is guaranteed by a square arrangement with an air temperature control system. The circular configuration provides less power than the square configuration, being limited by the multiple series connection to the lowest current value. The maximum electrical power produced with the square configuration is 225 W.  相似文献

A thermodynamic evaluation of different energy conversion chains based on centralized biomass gasification and decentralized heat and power production by a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has been performed. Three different chains have been evaluated, the main difference between the chains is the secondary fuel produced via biomass gasification. The secondary fuels considered are hydrogen, synthetic natural gas (SNG) and syngas. These fuels are assumed to be distributed through a transport and distribution grid to the micro-combined heat and power (μ-CHP) systems based on a SOFC and a heat pump.  相似文献

A new concept for soot removal from inside a syngas environment has been studied. Particulate emissions are retained in a soot trap downstream from a thermal partial oxidation (TPOX) reformer, while the syngas atmosphere itself is utilized as a gasification agent to achieve continuous and passive trap regeneration. This work analyses the performances of the loading and the regenerating phases of a wall flow soot trap in a syngas environment in an ad hoc developed test rig. A balance point between filtered and removed soot was actually reached at trap temperatures in the 800-1000 °C range with soot abatement efficiencies above 95 wt%. The particulate is obtained from a TPOX reactor operating in very rich fuel conditions, using methane as fuel. The final application of the reactor and trap assembly is a micro CHP system, based on an SOFC fed by a TPOX reformer. However, application to larger contexts (e.g. biomass gasification plants) can be envisaged.  相似文献

Anode recirculation, which is generally driven by an ejector, is commonly used in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems that operate with natural gas. Alternative fuels such as gasification syngas from biomass have been proposed for potential use in the SOFC systems because of the fuel flexibility of SOFCs and the sustainability of biomass resources. Because the ejector was initially designed to use natural gas, its recirculation behavior when using alternative fuels is not well understood. The aim of this research work is to study anode recirculation behavior and analyze its effect on safety issues regarding carbon deposition and nickel oxidation and the performance of an SOFC system fed with gasification syngas under steady state operation. We developed a detailed model including a recirculation model and an SOFC stack model for this study, which was well validated by experimental data. The results show that the entrainment ratio with the gasification syngas is much smaller than that with the natural gas, and the gasification syngas does not have the tendency toward carbon deposition or nickel oxidation under the operating conditions studied. In addition, the recirculation affects the performance of the SOFC, especially the net electrical efficiency, which could be promoted by 160%.  相似文献

Chemical looping gasification (CLG) can achieve the utilization of solid fuels for syngas production. The CLG system integrated with solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a promising energy conversion way. In this work, an integration system of CLG and SOFC is evaluated via the implementation of a multi-field coupling modelling, where the products from the CLG are directly transported into the SOFC as the fuel and the coke deposition effect on the cell performance is evaluated. The results reveal that SOFC temperature using pure hydrogen as fuel has an increase of around 4 K compared to that with gas mixture as fuel owing to the inhibition of carbon deposition. It is found that the arrangement of anode and cathode in the countercurrent mode can promote the overall uniformity of current density compared to that in the cocurrent flow. Moreover, the impact of operating parameter of the CLG system on the SOFC performance is also examined. The results demonstrate that the increase of fuel reactor (FR) temperature and H2O/C molar ratio in the CLG system is beneficial to the inhibition of carbon deposition and the enhancement of the SOFC performance.  相似文献

The integration of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) with gasification systems have theoretically been shown to have a great potential to provide highly efficient distributed generation energy systems that can be fuelled by biomass including municipal solid waste. The syngas produced from the gasification of carbonaceous material is rich in hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane that can fuel SOFCs. However, other constituents such as tar can cause catalyst deactivation, and blockage of the diffusion pathways. This work examines the impact of increasing concentrations of toluene as a model tar in a typical syngas composition fed to a NiO-GDC/TZ3Y/8YSZ/LSM–LSM SOFC membrane electrode assembly operating at 850°C and atmospheric pressure. Results suggest that up to 20 g/Nm3 of toluene and a low fuel utilisation factor (c.a. 17%) does not negatively impact cell performance and rather acts to increase the available hydrogen by undergoing reformation. At these conditions carbon deposition does occur, detected through EDS analysis, but serves to decrease the ASR rather than degrade the cell.  相似文献

In this paper, an integrated process of steam biomass gasification and a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is investigated energetically to evaluate both electrical and energy efficiencies. This system is conceptualized as a combined system, based on steam biomass gasification and with a high temperature, pressurized SOFC. The SOFC system uses hydrogen obtained from steam sawdust gasification. Due to the utilization of the hydrogen content of steam in the reforming and shift reaction stages, the system efficiencies reach appreciable levels. This study essentially investigates the utilization of steam biomass gasification derived hydrogen that was produced from an earlier work in a system combines gasifier and SOFC to perform multi-duties (power and heat). A thermodynamic model is developed to explore a combination of steam biomass gasification, which produces 70–75 g of hydrogen/kg of biomass to fuel a planar SOFC, and generate both heat and power. Furthermore, processes are emerged in the system to increase the hydrogen yield by further processing the rest of gasification products: carbon monoxide, methane, char and tar. The conceptualized scheme combines SOFC operates at 1000 K and 1.2 bar and gasifier scheme based on steam biomass gasification which operates close to the atmospheric pressure, a temperature range of 1023–1423 K and a steam-biomass ratio of 0.8 kmol/kmol. A parametric study is also performed to evaluate the effect of various parameters such as hydrogen yield, air flow rate etc. on the system performance. The results show that SOFC with an efficiency of 50.3% operates in a good fit with the steam biomass gasification module with an efficiency, based on hydrogen yield, of 55.3%, and the overall system then works efficiently with an electric efficiency of ∼82%.  相似文献

In this paper, a conceptual hybrid biomass gasification system is developed to produce hydrogen and is exergoeconomically analyzed. The system is based on steam biomass gasification with the lumped solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolyser cell (SOEC) subsystem as the core components. The gasifier gasifies sawdust in a steam medium and operates at a temperature range of 1023-1423 K and near atmospheric pressure. The analysis is conducted for a specific steam biomass ratio of 0.8 kmol-steam/kmol-biomass. The gasification process is assumed to be self-thermally standing. The pressurized SOFC and SOEC are of planar types and operate at 1000 K and 1.2 bar. The system can produce multi-outputs, such as hydrogen (with a production capacity range of 21.8-25.2 kgh−1), power and heat. The internal hydrogen consumption in the lumped SOFC-SOEC subsystem increases from 8.1 to 8.6 kg/h. The SOFC performs an efficiency of 50.3% and utilizes the hydrogen produced from the steam that decomposes in the SOEC. The exergoeconomic analysis is performed to investigate and describe the exergetic and economic interactions between the system components through calculations of the unit exergy cost of the process streams. It obtains a set of cost balance equations belonging to an exergy flow with material streams to and from the components which constitute the system. Solving the developed cost balance equations provides the cost values of the exergy streams. For the gasification temperature range and the electricity cost of 0.1046 $/kWh considered, the unit exergy cost of hydrogen ranges from 0.258 to 0.211 $/kWh.  相似文献

Underground coal gasification (UCG) is a promising clean coal technology. Typically, the syngas obtained from UCG is used for power generation via the steam turbine route. In the present paper, we consider UCG as a hydrogen generator and investigate the possibility of coupling it with a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) to generate electrical power directly. We show, through analysis, that integration with SOFC gives two specific advantages. Firstly, because of the high operating temperature of the SOFC, its anode exhaust can be used to produce steam required for the operation of UCG as well as for the reforming of the syngas for the SOFC. Secondly, the SOFC serves as a selective absorber of oxygen from air which paves the way for an efficient system of a carbon-neutral electrical power generation from underground coal. Thermodynamic analysis of the integrated system shows considerable improvement in the net thermal efficiency over that of a conventional combined cycle plant.  相似文献

Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is a promising technology for electricity generation. Sulfur-free syngas from a gas-cleaning unit serves as fuel for SOFC in integrated gasification fuel cell (IGFC) power plants. It converts the chemical energy of fuel gas directly into electric energy, thus high efficiencies can be achieved. The outputs from SOFC can be utilized by heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), which drives the steam turbine for electricity production. The SOFC stack model was developed using the process flow sheet simulator Aspen Plus, which is of the equilibrium type. Various ranges of syngas properties gathered from different literature were used for the simulation. The results indicate a trade-off efficiency and power with respect to a variety of SOFC inputs. The HRSG located after SOFC was included in the current simulation study with various operating parameters. This paper describes IGFC power plants, particularly the optimization of HRSG to improve the efficiency of the heat recovery from the SOFC exhaust gas and to maximize the power production in the steam cycle in the IGFC system. HRSG output from different pressure levels varies depending on the SOFC output. The steam turbine efficiency was calculated for measuring the total power plant output. The aim of this paper is to provide a simulation model for the optimal selection of the operative parameters of HRSG and SOFC for the IGFC system by comparing it with other models. The simulation model should be flexible enough for use in future development and capable of predicting system performance under various operating conditions.  相似文献

The production of electrolytic hydrogen is considered among the best solution to mitigate the grid instability problems which arise from the widespread distribution of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. However, hydrogen is not easy to stock and distribute. Possible solutions are represented by its direct injection into the existing pipeline for natural gas distribution or its utilisation for the production of a substitute of natural gas. In this last case, which follows the so called approach of “power to gas”, a source of carbon is required. Preferably the carbon should come from biomass, since it can be considered “renewable carbon”.Starting from this idea, this study analyses two different approaches, depending on the grid power demand. In a first layout, biomass is gasified with electrolytic hydrogen to generate directly a methane rich syngas. After water condensation, the syngas is fed to a methanation process to convert almost completely carbon in methane. In the second layouts the biomass is gasified with electrolytic oxygen and the syngas is fed, together with other electrolytic oxygen, to a power unit, such as an internal combustion engine, a gas turbine or a high temperature fuel cells (SOFC). The exhaust gas from these power units is composed almost exclusively by carbon dioxide and water vapour. After water condensation, the carbon dioxide is fed together electrolytic hydrogen to a methanation process to obtain the substitute of natural gas.An overall best efficiency of roughly 74% is obtained when the plant is not connected to the grid. On the contrary, when electricity can be absorbed by the grid, best efficiency of 59.4% is reached utilising, as power unit, a SOFC fed at 6 bars.In all cases the input is low value energy (biomass and unstable electric power) and the output is high value energy constituted by a substitute of natural gas and stable electric power.  相似文献

High temperature plasma gasification of wood is evaluated for the production of a fuel gas (syngas) for combined heat and power production. The advantages of plasma by comparison with existing thermochemical processes are in the high heating value gases, process control and the lower energy consumption per unit of output. From one kilogram of 20% moisture wood it is possible to obtain 4.6-4.8 MJ of electricity (net of electricity input) and 9.1-9.3 MJ of thermal energy when using wood with average elemental composition and with a LHV energy content of 13.9 MJ, when using a combined Brayton and Steam cycle generating plant. Experimental data from an air plasma gasification plant using alternating current (AC) plasma torches was integrated with a thermodynamic model showing that the chemical energy in the produced syngas was 13.8-14.3 MJ kg−1 with a power input of 2.2-3.3 MJ kg−1.  相似文献

Methanol production process configurations based on renewable energy sources have been designed. The processes were analyzed in the thermodynamic process simulation tool DNA. The syngas used for the catalytic methanol production was produced by gasification of biomass, electrolysis of water, CO2 from post-combustion capture and autothermal reforming of natural gas or biogas. Underground gas storage of hydrogen and oxygen was used in connection with the electrolysis to enable the electrolyser to follow the variations in the power produced by renewables. Six plant configurations, each with a different syngas production method, were compared. The plants achieve methanol exergy efficiencies of 59–72%, the best from a configuration incorporating autothermal reforming of biogas and electrolysis of water for syngas production. The different processes in the plants are highly heat integrated, and the low-temperature waste heat is used for district heat production. This results in high total energy efficiencies (∼90%) for the plants. The specific methanol costs for the six plants are in the range 11.8–25.3 €/GJexergy. The lowest cost is obtained by a plant using electrolysis of water, gasification of biomass and autothermal reforming of natural gas for syngas production.  相似文献

The technologies and the processes for the use of biomass as an energy source are not always environmental friendly. It is worth to develop approaches aimed at a more sustainable exploitation of biomass, avoiding whenever possible direct combustion and rather pursuing fuel upgrade paths, also considering direct conversion to electricity through fuel cells. In this context, it is of particular interest the development of the biomass gasification technology for synthesis gas (i.e., syngas) production, and the utilization of the obtained gas in fuel cells systems, in order to generate energy from renewable resources. Among the different kind of fuel cells, SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells), which can be fed with different type of fuels, seem to be also suitable for this type of gaseous fuel. In this work, the syngas composition produced by means of a continuous biomass steam gasifier (fixed bed) has been characterized. The hydrogen concentration in the syngas is around 60%. The system is equipped with a catalytic filter for syngas purification and some preliminary tests coupling the system with a SOFCs stack are shown. The data on the syngas composition and temperature profile measured during the experimental activity have been used to calibrate a 2-dimensional thermodynamic equilibrium model.  相似文献

A novel integrated drying and gasification of microalgae wet biomass process, involving a chemical-looping combustion (CLC) option to supply energy, is developed using Aspen Plus. The integrated gasification system consists of four primary units, including (i) a wet biomass drying unit, (ii) the gasification system, (iii) the CLC section, and (iv) the gas purification process. The model shows a good accuracy (relative error < 10%) in predicting the product compositions as compared to the experimental results under consistent operating conditions. The performance of the integrated gasification system is evaluated using Spirulina microalgae at various moisture contents (0–45 wt%). The effect of gasifying agents O2/steam and the fraction of the produced char used in the CLC section on the gasification performance is also evaluated. The tar is successfully reformed into syngas in the pyrolysis stage by adjusting the O2 flow rate. The C (char) to CLC provides to a positive effect on the syngas composition, particularly for gasification of wet biomass, but brings an adverse impact on the yield of the syngas product. The integration of the CLC process and CO2 absorber in the gasification system provides high-quality syngas by removing CO2. The separated pure CO2 can be used as a feedstock for other chemical industries.  相似文献

An integrated power system of biomass gasification with solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and micro gas turbine has been investigated by thermodynamic model. A zero-dimensional electrochemical model of SOFC and one-dimensional chemical kinetics model of downdraft biomass gasifier have been developed to analyze overall performance of the power system. Effects of various parameters such as moisture content in biomass, equivalence ratio and mass flow rate of dry biomass on the overall performance of system have been studied by energy analysis. It is found that char in the biomass tends to be converted with decreasing of moisture content and increasing of equivalence ratio due to higher temperature in reduction zone of gasifier. Electric and combined heat and power efficiencies of the power system increase with decreasing of moisture content and increasing of equivalence ratio, the electrical efficiency of this system could reach a level of approximately 56%.Regarding entire conversion of char in gasifier and acceptable electrical efficiency above 45%, operating condition in this study is suggested to be in the range of moisture content less than 0.2, equivalence ratio more than 0.46 and mass flow rate of biomass less than 20  kg h−1.  相似文献

Biomass can be used as fuel of fuel cells by conducting thermochemical process such as biomass gasification. In this study, the required fuel of a solid oxide fuel cell was supplied through pine gasification in a gasifier reactor. The purpose of this study was provided an appropriate configuration to a co-generation system produced heat and power and the state with maximum heat and power production and minimum carbon dioxide emission was obtained. The outputs were power, heat, and CO2 emission investigated with respect to steam to biomass ratio of gasification and current density and fuel utilization factor of solid oxide fuel cell. The results indicated that fuel utilization factor contributed the most on power and hot water with shares of 73.64% and 47.27%, respectively. However, current density had the highest influence on carbon dioxide emission with a share of 83.41%. Parametric analysis illustrated that increasing fuel utilization factor remarkably enhanced the power production and mitigated hot water production. A considerable reduction was observed in carbon dioxide emission by increasing current density. Single-objective and multi-objective optimizations revealed that steam to biomass ratio of 2, 4600 A/m2 of current density, 0.77 of utilization factor are the optimum states. Power production of 196.8 kW, hot water production of 1203 g/s, and carbon dioxide emission of 1261 kg/MW.h were the outputs of the optimum state.  相似文献

In this work, syngas was used directly as fuel source for the renewable CCHP system, which can be producted through biomass gasification process. The advantages and limitation of entrained flow gasifier are compared, followed by discussion on the key parameters that are critical for the optimum production of syngas. Gasification agent of 450 °C temperature and 30 atm pressure has been proposed as a optical solution to a entrained flow gasifier using air as gasification agent at 0.27 ER (oxygen equivalence ratio), in that it provides a syngas of 5.665 MJ/m3 LHV and up to 77% gasification efficiency. Depending on the key parameters of gasification process, the properties of syngas produced can be varied. It is thus essential to thoroughly understand the cogeneration system to identify the suitable methods for a renewable CCHP system. These process was simulated using Aspen Plus to perform the rigorous material and energy balances. The results obtained from simulation and experiment agreed well. This paper later focused on economic evaluation of the entire process, as well as the environmental benefits. The renewable CCHP system could able to attain lower CO2 and SO2 emission with total energy efficiency and gas yield of 75.43% and 2.476 m3/kg respectively.  相似文献
