Anilogel-E, a cross-linked starch, can be used with distinct advantages where native starch or soluble starch are conventionally used, e.g. in scoring for amylolytic organisms, as an ingredient of fermentation media, and in enhancing protoplast regeneration. It is particularly useful for the direct visualization of amylase producing micro-organisms on solid media, making prior replication of colonies unnecessary.  相似文献

Nonperiodical sustained fluctuations of electrical potential are characteristic of the rhythms of cortical electric activities. A nonperiodical negatively or positively damped oscillation would be a general solution of any first order linear system of differential equations. Attention is called to a somewhat specialized type of a system of ordinary linear differential equations, which are used by Vito Volterra (Leçons Sur la Théorie Mathématique de la Lutte Pour la Vie, Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1931) in his theory of interdevouring species. This system of linear equations leads to nonperiodicalundamped oscillations and admits several plausible interpretations in terms of possible biophysical reactions in the brain. The reproductive biology of wind-pollinated species in terms of pollen and ovule production is rarely studied compared with zoophilous species, despite available hypotheses on the effect of growth form and life-history traits on reproductive investment. Here, we use published data and new data for species of Juncus and Luzula (Juncaceae) to test the hypotheses that, in wind-pollinated species, woody perennials should exhibit larger pollen–ovule (P/O) ratios than herbaceous species and that species with separate sexes have larger P/O ratios than homoecious species. In total, we report pollen and ovule production for 291 wind-pollinated species, including 19 Juncus and 5 Luzula species. Compared with other wind-pollinated species, Juncus exhibits unusually low P/O ratios (log P/O = 2.06 ± 0.46) because of high ovule production. We argue that the high ovule and seed production in Juncus, associated with frequent self-fertilization, may be beneficial in habitats preferred by the genus. In general, we found higher P/O ratios in woody perennials (log P/O = 4.37 ± 1.18) or in species with separate sexes (log P/O = 4.28 ± 1.12) than in herbaceous (log P/O = 3.51 ± 0.77) or homoecious (log P/O = 3.52 ± 0.80) species, respectively. However, when we analyzed woody perennials separately, we found no significant difference in P/O ratios between homoecious and nonhomoecious species. We argue that woody perennials, independent of dicliny, may be preferentially outcrossed and therefore exhibit decreased variation in mating systems compared with herbs. Because the degree of outcrossing correlates with P/O ratios, differences between homoecious and nonhomoecious woody perennials could be less pronounced.  相似文献

The somatic chromosomes, obtained from short term leukocyte cultures, were studied of four species of the Hylobatidae: Hylobates lar, H. agilis, H. (Nomascus) concolor and Symphalangus syndactylus. In accordance with earlier observations by others, the diploid chromosome numbers were found to be 44 in both Hylobates lar and H. agilis, 52 in H. concolor and 50 in Symphalangus syndactylus. The chromosome associations observed in metaphase spreads are clearly different in the three types of chromosome complements. In Hylobates lar and H. agilis associations are found between both members of the marked chromosome pair. In Symphalangus syndactylus the only two acrocentric elements of the karyo-type, which are of medium size, associate frequently. In H. concolor finally, the members of three pairs of small acrocentrics are involved in chromosome associations. G-banding patterns (obtained by trypsin treatment) showed that in a male individual of this species also the small acrocentric Y chromosome sometimes participates in these associations. The evolutionary aspects of these observations are briefly discussed.  相似文献

By adopting a single-spore isolation technique, 113 isolates of Gibberella zeae, the perfect stage of Fusarium graminearum, were isolated from rice stubbles in barley and wheat fields and tested for production of trichothecenes and zearalenone on rice grains. Of the isolates, 93% produced the trichothecenes, and they could be subdivided into two chemotaxonomic groups: nivalenol and fusarenon-X producers and deoxynivalenol and 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol producers. No cross production of these two types of trichothecenes was observed in these isolates. Zearalenone was detected in 68% of the isolates, but no clear relationship could be observed regarding its position with respect to the two chemotaxonomic groups.  相似文献

Although operation frequently is carried out in cases of excessive uterine bleeding of benign origin, particularly if fibrous tumor is present, in many cases major surgical intervention could be averted by adequate conservative therapy. The authors have given Ergotrate(R) over long periods with good results in many cases and have noted no severe side effects. If this therapy fails, diagnostic dilatation and curettement sometimes reveals and removes the cause of bleeding. If infection is a factor, use of sulfonamides or antibiotics sometimes has dramatic effect.  相似文献
