Well‐defined mixed‐metal [CoMn3O4] and [NiMn3O4] cubane complexes were synthesized and used as precursors for heterogeneous oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts. The discrete clusters were dropcasted onto glassy carbon (GC) and indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes, and the OER activities of the resulting films were evaluated. The catalytic surfaces were analyzed by various techniques to gain insight into the structure‐function relationships of the electrocatalysts’ heterometallic composition. Depending on preparation conditions, the Co‐Mn oxide was found to change metal composition during catalysis, while the Ni–Mn oxides maintained the NiMn3 ratio. XAS studies provided structural insights indicating that the electrocatalysts are different from the molecular precursors, but that the original NiMn3O4 cubane‐like geometry was maintained in the absence of thermal treatment ( 2‐Ni ). In contrast, the thermally generated 3‐Ni develops an oxide‐like extended structure. Both 2‐Ni and 3‐Ni undergo structural changes upon electrolysis, but they do not convert into the same material. The observed structural motifs in these heterogeneous electrocatalysts are reminiscent of the biological oxygen‐evolving complex in Photosystem II, including the MMn3O4 cubane moiety. The reported studies demonstrate the use of discrete heterometallic oxide clusters as precursors for heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts of novel composition and the distinct behavior of two sets of mixed metal oxides.  相似文献

The hydroxide‐exchange membrane fuel cell (HEMFC) is a promising energy conversion device. However, the development of HEMFC is hampered by the lack of platinum‐group‐metal‐free (PGM‐free) electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Now, a Ni catalyst is reported that exhibits the highest mass activity in HOR for a PGM‐free catalyst as well as excellent activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This catalyst, Ni‐H2‐2 %, was optimized through pyrolysis of a Ni‐containing metal‐organic framework precursor under a mixed N2/H2 atmosphere, which yielded carbon‐supported Ni nanoparticles with different levels of strains. The Ni‐H2‐2 % catalyst has an optimal level of strain, which leads to an optimal hydrogen binding energy and a high number of active sites.  相似文献

Iron‐based (oxy)hydroxides are especially attractive electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to their earth abundance, low cost, and nontoxicity. However, poor OER kinetics on the surface restricts the performance of the FeOOH electrocatalyst. Herein, a highly efficient and stable Ni(OH)2/β‐like FeOOH electrocatalyst is obtained by facile electroactivation treatment. The activated Ni(OH)2/β‐like FeOOH sample indicates an overpotential of 300 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for the OER, and no clear current decay after 50 h of testing; this is comparable to the most efficient nickel‐ and cobalt‐based electrocatalysts on planar substrates. Furthermore, studies suggest that β‐like FeOOH plays a key role in remarkably enhancing the performance during the electroactivation process owing to its metastable tunnel structure with a lower barrier for interface diffusion of Ni2+ ions between the bilayer electrocatalyst. This study develops a new strategy to explore efficient and low‐cost electrocatalysts and deepens understanding of bilayer electrocatalysts for the OER.  相似文献

Ultrathin nanostructures are attractive for diverse applications owing to their unique properties compared to their bulk materials. Transition‐metal chalcogenides are promising electrocatalysts, yet it remains difficult to make ultrathin structures (sub‐2 nm), and the realization of their chemical doping is even more challenging. Herein we describe a soft‐template mediated colloidal synthesis of Fe‐doped NiSe2 ultrathin nanowires (UNWs) with diameter down to 1.7 nm. The synergistic interplay between oleylamine and 1‐dodecanethiol is crucial to yield these UNWs. The in situ formed amorphous hydroxide layers that is confined to the surface of the ultrathin scaffolds enable efficient oxygen evolution electrocatalysis. The UNWs exhibit a very low overpotential of 268 mV at 10 mA cm?2 in 0.1 m KOH, as well as remarkable long‐term stability, representing one of the most efficient noble‐metal‐free catalysts.  相似文献

Developing noble‐metal‐free bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is of great significance for energy conversion and storage systems. Herein, we have developed a transformation method for growing NiMn‐based bimetal–organic framework (NiMn‐MOF) nanosheets on multi‐channel carbon fibers (MCCF) as a bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst. Owing to the desired components and architecture, the MCCF/NiMn‐MOFs manifest comparable electrocatalytic performance towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with the commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst and superior performance towards oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to the benchmark RuO2 electrocatalyst. X‐ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the strong synergetic effect of adjacent Ni and Mn nodes within MCCF/NiMn‐MOFs effectively promotes the thermodynamic formation of key *O and *OOH intermediates over active NiO6 centers towards fast ORR and OER kinetics.  相似文献

The search for highly efficient platinum group metal (PGM)‐free electrocatalysts for the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) in alkaline electrolytes remains a great challenge in the development of alkaline exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). Here we report the synthesis of an oxygen‐vacancy‐rich CeO2/Ni heterostructure and its remarkable HOR performance in alkaline media. Experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate the electron transfer between CeO2 and Ni could lead to thermoneutral adsorption free energies of H* (ΔGH*). This, together with the promoted OH* adsorption strength derived from the abundance of oxygen vacancies in the CeO2 species, contributes to the excellent HOR performance with the exchange current density and mass activity of 0.038 mA cmNi?2 and 12.28 mA mgNi?1, respectively. This presents a new benchmark for PGM‐free alkaline HOR and opens a new avenue toward the rational design of high‐performance PGM‐free electrocatalysts for alkaline HOR.  相似文献

The replacement of platinum with non‐precious‐metal electrocatalysts with high efficiency and superior stability for the hydrogen‐evolution reaction (HER) remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the one‐step synthesis of uniform, ultrafine molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) nanoparticles (NPs) within a carbon matrix from inexpensive starting materials (dicyanamide and ammonium molybdate). The optimized catalyst consisting of Mo2C NPs with sizes lower than 3 nm encapsulated by ultrathin graphene shells (ca. 1–3 layers) showed superior HER activity in acidic media, with a very low onset potential of ?6 mV, a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec?1, and a large exchange current density of 0.179 mA cm?2, as well as good stability during operation for 12 h. These excellent properties are similar to those of state‐of‐the‐art 20 % Pt/C and make the catalyst one of the most active acid‐stable electrocatalysts ever reported for HER.  相似文献

Two‐dimensional nanosheets with high specific surface areas and fascinating physical and chemical properties have attracted tremendous interests because of their promising potentials in both fundamental research and practical applications. However, the problem of developing a universal strategy with a facile and cost‐effective synthesis process for multi‐type ultrathin 2 D nanostructures remains unresolved. Herein, we report a generalized low‐temperature fabrication of scalable multi‐type 2 D nanosheets including metal hydroxides (such as Ni(OH)2, Co(OH)2, Cd(OH)2, and Mg(OH)2), metal oxides (such as ZnO and Mn3O4), and layered mixed transition‐metal hydroxides (Ni‐Co LDH, Ni‐Fe LDH, Co‐Fe LDH, and Ni‐Co‐Fe layered ternary hydroxides) through the rational employment of a green soft‐template. The synthesized crystalline inorganic nanosheets possess confined thickness, resulting in ultrahigh surface atom ratios and chemically reactive facets. Upon evaluation as electrode materials for pseudocapacitors, the Ni‐Co LDH nanosheets exhibit a high specific capacitance of 1087 F g?1 at a current density of 1 A g?1, and excellent stability, with 103 % retention after 500 cycles. This strategy is facile and scalable for the production of high‐quality ultrathin crystalline inorganic nanosheets, with the possibility of extension to the preparation of other complex nanosheets.  相似文献

Low‐cost, non‐noble‐metal electrocatalysts are required for direct methanol fuel cells, but their development has been hindered by limited activity, high onset potential, low conductivity, and poor durability. A surface electronic structure tuning strategy is presented, which involves doping of a foreign oxophilic post‐transition metal onto transition metal aerogels to achieve a non‐noble‐metal aerogel Ni97Bi3 with unprecedented electrocatalytic activity and durability in methanol oxidation. Trace amounts of Bi are atomically dispersed on the surface of the Ni97Bi3 aerogel, which leads to an optimum shift of the d‐band center of Ni, large compressive strain of Bi, and greatly increased conductivity of the aerogel. The electrocatalyst is endowed with abundant active sites, efficient electron and mass transfer, resistance to CO poisoning, and outstanding performance in methanol oxidation. This work sheds light on the design of high‐performance non‐noble‐metal electrocatalysts.  相似文献

Two‐dimensional (2D) PtSe2 shows the most prominent layer‐dependent electrical properties among various 2D materials and high catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), and therefore, it is an ideal material for exploring the structure–activity correlations in 2D systems. Here, starting with the synthesis of single‐crystalline 2D PtSe2 with a controlled number of layers and probing the HER catalytic activity of individual flakes in micro electrochemical cells, we investigated the layer‐dependent HER catalytic activity of 2D PtSe2 from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. We clearly demonstrated how the number of layers affects the number of active sites, the electronic structures, and electrical properties of 2D PtSe2 flakes and thus alters their catalytic performance for HER. Our results also highlight the importance of efficient electron transfer in achieving optimum activity for ultrathin electrocatalysts. Our studies greatly enrich our understanding of the structure–activity correlations for 2D catalysts and provide new insight for the design and synthesis of ultrathin catalysts with high activity.  相似文献

Exploring non‐precious‐metal‐based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts featuring high efficiency, low cost, and environmental friendliness is of great importance for the broad applications of fuel cells and metal–air batteries. In this work, ultrathin NiCo2O4 nanosheets deposited on 1D SnO2 nanotubes (SNT) were successfully fabricated through a productive electrospinning technique followed by a sintering and low‐temperature coprecipitation strategy. This hierarchically engineered architecture has ultrathin NiCo2O4 nanosheets uniformly and fully erected on both walls of tubular SNTs, which results in improved electrochemical activity as an ORR catalyst, in terms of positive onset potential and high current density, as well as superior tolerance to crossover effects and long‐term durability with respect to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The excellent performance of SNT@NiCo2O4 composites may originate from their rationally designed hierarchical tubular nanostructure with completely exposed active sites and interconnected 1D networks for efficient electron and electrolyte transfer; this makes these composite nanotubes promising candidates to replace platinum‐based catalysts for practical fuel cell and metal–air battery applications.  相似文献

A universal technique has been proposed to sort two‐dimensional (2D) sub‐nanometer thin crystals (manganese dioxide MnO2 and molybdenum disulfide MoS2) according to their lateral dimensions. This technique is based on tuning the zeta potential of their aqueous dispersions which induces the selective sedimentation of large‐sized 2D crystals and leaves the small‐sized counterparts in suspension. The electrocatalytic properties of as‐obtained 2D ultrathin crystals are strongly dependent on their lateral size. As a proof‐of‐concept study, the small‐sized MnO2 nanocrystals were tested as the electrocatalysts for the urea‐oxidation reaction (UOR), which showed outstanding performance in both half reaction and full electrolytic cell. A mechanism study reveals the enhanced performance is associated with the remarkable structural properties of MnO2 including ultrathin (ca. 0.95 nm), laterally small‐sized (50–200 nm), and highly exposed active centers.  相似文献

Efficient reversible oxygen electrodes for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are vitally important for various energy conversion devices, such as regenerative fuel cells and metal–air batteries. However, realization of such electrodes is impeded by insufficient activity and instability of electrocatalysts for both water splitting and oxygen reduction. We report highly active bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen electrodes comprising core–shell Co@Co3O4 nanoparticles embedded in CNT‐grafted N‐doped carbon‐polyhedra obtained by the pyrolysis of cobalt metal–organic framework (ZIF‐67) in a reductive H2 atmosphere and subsequent controlled oxidative calcination. The catalysts afford 0.85 V reversible overvoltage in 0.1 m KOH, surpassing Pt/C, IrO2, and RuO2 and thus ranking them among one of the best non‐precious‐metal electrocatalysts for reversible oxygen electrodes.  相似文献

The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to yield synthesis gas (syngas, CO and H2) has been considered as a promising method to realize the net reduction in CO2 emission. However, it is challenging to balance the CO2RR activity and the CO/H2 ratio. To address this issue, nitrogen‐doped carbon supported single‐atom catalysts are designed as electrocatalysts to produce syngas from CO2RR. While Co and Ni single‐atom catalysts are selective in producing H2 and CO, respectively, electrocatalysts containing both Co and Ni show a high syngas evolution (total current >74 mA cm?2) with CO/H2 ratios (0.23–2.26) that are suitable for typical downstream thermochemical reactions. Density functional theory calculations provide insights into the key intermediates on Co and Ni single‐atom configurations for the H2 and CO evolution. The results present a useful case on how non‐precious transition metal species can maintain high CO2RR activity with tunable CO/H2 ratios.  相似文献

The high cost and low reserves of noble metals greatly hinder their practical applications in new energy production and conversion. The exploration of cost-effective alternative electrocatalysts with the ability to drive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is extremely significant to promote overall water splitting. Herein, ultrathin CoSe2/CNTs nanocomposites have been synthesized by a facile two-step method, where the ultrathin Co-MOF (metal organic-framework) decorated with cable-like carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (Co-MOF/CNTs) was initially fabricated, and followed a low-temperature selenization process. The ultrathin CoSe2 nanosheets as well as the superior conductivity of CNTs synergistically resulted in abundant active sites and enhanced conductivity to boost the electrocatalytic activity. The as-prepared CoSe2/CNTs electrocatalysts exhibited an overpotential of 190 mV and 300 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 for the HER and OER in alkaline solution, respectively, and demonstrated superior durability. Furthermore, the as-prepared bifunctional CoSe2/CNTs electrocatalysts can act as cathode and anode in an electrolyzer, showing a cell voltage of 1.75 V at 10 mA/cm2 for overall water splitting.  相似文献

Developing noble‐metal‐free electrocatalysts is important to industrially viable ammonia synthesis through the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). However, the present transition‐metal electrocatalysts still suffer from low activity and Faradaic efficiency due to poor interfacial reaction kinetics. Herein, an interface‐engineered heterojunction, composed of CoS nanosheets anchored on a TiO2 nanofibrous membrane, is developed. The TiO2 nanofibrous membrane can uniformly confine the CoS nanosheets against agglomeration, and contribute substantially to the NRR performance. The intimate coupling between CoS and TiO2 enables easy charge transfer, resulting in fast reaction kinetics at the heterointerface. The conductivity and structural integrity of the heterojunction are further enhanced by carbon nanoplating. The resulting C@CoS@TiO2 electrocatalyst achieves a high ammonia yield (8.09×10?10 mol s?1 cm?2) and Faradaic efficiency (28.6 %), as well as long‐term durability.  相似文献

Herein, we demonstrate an easy way to improve the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Pt electrodes in alkaline media by introducing Ni–Fe clusters. As a result, the overpotential needed to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm?2 in H2‐saturated 0.1 m KOH is reduced for the model single‐crystal electrodes down to about 70 mV. To our knowledge, these modified electrodes outperform any other reported electrocatalysts tested under similar conditions. Moreover, the influence of 1) Ni to Fe ratio, 2) cluster coverage, and 3) the nature of the alkali‐metal cations present in the electrolyte on the HER activity has been investigated. The observed catalytic performance likely originates from both the improved water dissociation at the Ni–Fe clusters and the subsequent optimal hydrogen adsorption and recombination at Pt atoms present at the Ni–Fe/Pt boundary.  相似文献

Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into fuels using electricity generated from renewable sources helps to create an artificial carbon cycle. However, the low efficiency and poor stability hinder the practical use of most conventional electrocatalysts. In this work, a 2D hierarchical Pd/SnO2 structure, ultrathin Pd nanosheets partially capped by SnO2 nanoparticles, is designed to enable multi‐electron transfer for selective electroreduction of CO2 into CH3OH. Such a structure design not only enhances the adsorption of CO2 on SnO2, but also weakens the binding strength of CO on Pd due to the as‐built Pd–O–Sn interfaces, which is demonstrated to be critical to improve the electrocatalytic selectivity and stability of Pd catalysts. This work provides a new strategy to improve electrochemical performance of metal‐based catalysts by creating metal oxide interfaces for selective electroreduction of CO2.  相似文献

We report a straightforward strategy to design efficient N doped porous carbon (NPC) electrocatalyst that has a high concentration of easily accessible active sites for the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). The NPC with large amounts of active N (pyridinic and graphitic N) and highly porous structure is prepared by using an oxygen‐rich metal–organic framework (Zn‐MOF‐74) precursor. The amount of active N species can be tuned by optimizing the calcination temperature and time. Owing to the large pore sizes, the active sites are well exposed to electrolyte for CO2RR. The NPC exhibits superior CO2RR activity with a small onset potential of ?0.35 V and a high faradaic efficiency (FE) of 98.4 % towards CO at ?0.55 V vs. RHE, one of the highest values among NPC‐based CO2RR electrocatalysts. This work advances an effective and facile way towards highly active and cost‐effective alternatives to noble‐metal CO2RR electrocatalysts for practical applications.  相似文献

The rising H2 economy demands active and durable electrocatalysts based on low‐cost, earth‐abundant materials for water electrolysis/photolysis. Here we report nanoscale Ni metal cores over‐coated by a Cr2O3‐blended NiO layer synthesized on metallic foam substrates. The Ni@NiO/Cr2O3 triphase material exhibits superior activity and stability similar to Pt for the hydrogen‐evolution reaction in basic solutions. The chemically stable Cr2O3 is crucial for preventing oxidation of the Ni core, maintaining abundant NiO/Ni interfaces as catalytically active sites in the heterostructure and thus imparting high stability to the hydrogen‐evolution catalyst. The highly active and stable electrocatalyst enables an alkaline electrolyzer operating at 20 mA cm?2 at a voltage lower than 1.5 V, lasting longer than 3 weeks without decay. The non‐precious metal catalysts afford a high efficiency of about 15 % for light‐driven water splitting using GaAs solar cells.  相似文献
