The dielectric lifetime and corresponding damage morphology of polycarbonate/poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) (PC/P(VDF‐HFP)) layered systems are studied under constant direct current (DC) field. Melt blends of the two polymers are also considered for comparison. The dielectric lifetimes of the latter are systematically much shorter than the layered systems. The interfaces between the polymers act as flaws that induce up to two orders of magnitude difference between the layered and blend systems. The capacitance values versus time during breakdown progression exhibit an inversed S‐shape pattern. The three regimes in the S‐shape pattern are consecutively attributed to randomly isolated breakdowns, interconnecting breakdowns, and wearing‐out of the capacitor film. The film breakdown images during dielectric lifetime test confirmed the transition from randomly isolated breakdowns to interconnecting breakdowns. This transition was further evidenced by a bimodal distribution in the Weibull analysis. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2012  相似文献

Random copolymers of 65% vinylidene fluoride and 35% trifluoroethylene were reacted with an organic peroxide, in combination with a free‐radical trap, to yield networks of high crosslink density. Crystallization subsequent to the crosslinking yielded ferroelectric materials exhibiting large electrostrictive strains. The magnitude of the electromechanical response increased with an increasing degree of crosslinking, even though this reduced the crystallinity. For the most crosslinked sample, longitudinal (thickness) strains as high as 12% were induced at an electric field of 9 MV/m. This electrostrictive performance exceeded that obtained to date with any poly(vinylidene fluoride) material. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Upon crystalline solidification of one component in a homogeneously molten polymer blend, composition profiles develop outside (i.e., in the rest melt) and behind (i.e., within the spherulites) the crystal growth front. The present article is devoted to the detailed verification and the interpretation of these distributions and their temporal development inside growing spherulites. To this end, the energy dispersive X‐ray emission (EDX) of suitable elements has been recorded locally resolved in a scanning electron microscope and evaluated correspondingly. The investigations were performed at the melt homogeneous blend of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) as crystallizing and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) as steadily amorphous component. If the spherulites are not volume filling, the mean PMMA content 〈?PMMA〉 inside the PVDF spherulites is for all blends about 0.2 below the starting composition. ?PMMA increases however slightly from the center of a spherulite to its border. That increase reflects the PMMA concentration in front of the spherulite surface, which increases likewise with time, and is clearly above the initial composition. There is at the spherulite surface, consequently, a remarkable jump in composition from the spherulite internal to its amorphous surroundings. It may amount up to 0.5. With volume filling spherulites, a slight variation of the composition from the center of a spherulite to its border is observed, too. This proves that also at these conditions composition profiles develop in the spherulite's surroundings. They remain however so weak that they do not inhibit crystallization even in its later stages. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 338–346, 2006  相似文献

The comparative studies on the miscibility and phase behavior between the blends of linear and star‐shaped poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) were carried out in this work. The linear poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) was synthesized by the ring opening polymerization of 2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline in the presence of methyl p‐toluenesulfonate (MeOTs) whereas the star‐shaped poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) was synthesized with octa(3‐iodopropyl) polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane [(IC3H6)8Si8O12, OipPOSS] as an octafunctional initiator. The polymers with different topological structures were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It is found that the star‐shaped poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) was miscible with poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), which was evidenced by single glass‐transition temperature behavior and the equilibrium melting‐point depression. Nonetheless, the blends of linear poly(2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline) with PVDF were phase‐separated. The difference in miscibility was ascribed to the topological effect of PMOx macromolecules on the miscibility. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Methacrylate‐functionalized poly(ethylene oxide‐co‐ethylene carbonate) macromonomers were prepared in two steps by the anionic ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene carbonate at 180 °C, with potassium methoxide as the initiator, followed by the reaction of the terminal hydroxyl groups of the polymers with methacryloyl chloride. The molecular weight of the polymer went through a maximum after approximately 45 min of polymerization, and the content of ethylene carbonate units in the polymer decreased with the reaction time. A polymer having a number‐average molecular weight of 2650 g mol?1 and an ethylene carbonate content of 28 mol % was selected and used to prepare a macromonomer, which was subsequently polymerized by UV irradiation in the presence of different concentrations of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide salt. The resulting self‐supportive crosslinked polymer electrolyte membranes reached ionic conductivities of 6.3 × 10?6 S cm?1 at 20 °C. The coordination of the lithium ions by both the ether and carbonate oxygens in the polymer structure was indicated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The blend system containing a poly(vinylidene fluoride/trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF/TrFE)] copolymer (68/32 mol %) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was miscible from the results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies that exhibit the presence of a single, composition‐dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) and a strong melting point depression for the semicrystalline P(VDF/TrFE) component. However, differences between the DSC and dielectric measurements, which showed a separate P(VDF/TrFE) Tg peak, suggests that the P(VDF/TrFE)/PVAc blends are actually partially miscible. Because of the lower dielectric constant of PVAc and the reduced sample crystallinity caused by the addition of PVAc, both the dielectric constant and the remanent polarization of the copolymer blends decrease with increasing PVAc content. The presence of a small amount of PVAc stabilized the anomalous ferroelectric behavior of ice–water‐quenched P(VDF/TrFE), and the blend portrayed normal polarization reversal behavior after adding only 1 wt % PVAc. The piezoelectric response suggests small changes with an increasing number of poling cycles. It is believed that PVAc affects the DE hysteresis behavior at the interface between crystalline and amorphous phases, although much work remains to be done to confirm this hypothesis. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were prepared by the isothermal immersion and precipitation of PVDF/N‐methyl‐2‐pyrollidone dope solutions in either harsh or soft nonsolvent baths. Low‐voltage field emission scanning electron microscopy imaging of the formed membranes at high magnifications (e.g., 300,000×) revealed their nanoscale fine structures, particularly dendrites observed on the surfaces of the macrovoids, cellular pores, and the membrane skin, which have never been successfully presented in the literature. Evidence of crystallization was also demonstrated by X‐ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The phase diagram at 25 °C, including a binodal, tie lines, and a crystallization‐induced gelation line, was determined both experimentally and theoretically. These results were further used in mass‐transfer calculations to obtain diffusion trajectories and concentration profiles for the membrane region, which were useful for elucidating the relationship between the membrane preparation conditions and the obtained membrane morphologies. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐ethylene naphthalate) (PETN)/organoclay was synthesized with the solution intercalation method. Hexadecylamine was used as an organophilic alkylamine in organoclay. Our aim was to clarify the intercalation of PETN chains to hexadecylamine–montmorillonite (C16–MMT) and to improve both the thermal stability and tensile property. We found that the addition of only a small amount of organoclay was enough to improve the thermal stabilities and mechanical properties of PETN/C16–MMT hybrid films. Maximum enhancement in both the ultimate tensile strength and initial modulus for the hybrids was observed in blends containing 4 wt % C16–MMT. Below a 4 wt % clay loading, the clay particles could be highly dispersed in the polymer matrix without a large agglomeration of particles. However, an agglomerated structure did form in the polymer matrix at a 6 wt % clay content. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 39: 2581–2588, 2001  相似文献

The development of the poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) morphology in the presence of already existent poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) spherulites was studied by two‐stage solidification with two separate crystallization temperatures. PVDF formed irregular dendrites at lower temperatures and regular, banded spherulites at elevated temperatures. The transition temperature of the spherulitic morphology from dendrites to regular, banded spherulites increased with increasing PVDF content. A remarkable amount of PHB was included in the PVDF dendrites, whereas PHB was rejected into the remaining melt from the banded spherulites. When PVDF crystallized as banded spherulites, PHB could consequently crystallize only around them, if at all. In contrast, PHB crystallized with a common growth front, starting from a defined site in the interfibrillar regions of volume‐filling PVDF dendrites. It formed by itself dendritic spherulites that included a large number of PVDF spherulites. For blends with a PHB content of more than 80 wt %, for which the PVDF dendrites were not volume‐filling, PHB first formed regular spherulites. Their growth started from outside the PVDF dendrites but could later interpenetrate them, and this made their own morphology dendritic. These PHB spherulites melted stepwise because the lamellae inside the PVDF dendrites melted at a lower temperature than those from outside. This reflected the regularity of the two fractions of the lamellae because that of those inside the dendrites of PVDF was controlled by the intraspherulitic order of PVDF, whereas that from outside was only controlled by the temperature and the melt composition. The described morphologies developed without mutual nucleating efficiency of the components. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 873–882, 2003  相似文献

Poly(ethylene oxide) (MW 600,000)/poly(2vinylpyridine) (MW 200,000)/LiClO4 blends have been prepared by the solution blending process. The ionic conductivities of the blends containing lower weight fractions (15, 17.5, 20 and 22.5%) of poly (2vinylpyridine) initially increases as the salt content is increased, reaches a maximum at an ethylene oxide/Li+ mole ratio of 10 and decreases as the salt content is further increased. Blends, which have higher weight fractions of poly(2vinylpyridine) (25 and 35%) display different electric behavior, i.e., the ionic conductivity continously increased as the salt content is increased to an ethylene oxide/Li+ mole ratio of 2. Thermal, 7Li solidstate NMR and semiempirical MNDO molecular orbital studies indicate that this contrasting behavior may be explained by the structure and ratios of the solvates (mixed solvate or homosolvate) of LiClO4 present in the blends. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A miscible homopolymer–copolymer pair viz., poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA)–poly(styrene‐co‐butyl acrylate) (SBA) is reported. The miscibility has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry. While 1 : 1 (w/w) blends with SBA containing 23 and 34 wt % styrene (ST) become miscible only above 225 and 185 °C respectively indicating existence of UCST, those with SBA containing 63 wt % ST is miscible at the lowest mixing temperature (i.e., Tg's) but become immiscible when heated at ca 250 °C indicating the existence of LCST. Miscibility for blends with SBA of still higher ST content could not be determined by this method because of the closeness of the Tg's of the components. The miscibility window at 230 °C refers to the two copolymer compositions of which one with the lower ST content is near the UCST, while the other with the higher ST content is near the LCST. Using these compositions and the mean field theory binary interaction parameters between the monomer residues have been calculated. The values are χST‐BA = 0.087 and χEMA‐BA = 0.013 at 230 °C. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 369–375, 2000  相似文献

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes were hydrophilic modified with hydroxyl group terminated hyperbranched poly(amine‐ester) (HPAE). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR) was used to study the chemical change of PVDF membranes. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that some HPAE molecules were retained in PVDF membrane through polymer chain coiling. The presence of HPAE would improve the hydrophilicity of PVDF membrane. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to characterize the morphology of different membranes. The thermodynamic stability for PVDF/DMAc/HPAE/Water system was characterized by the determination of the gelation values. Precipitation kinetics for PVDF/DMAc/HPAE/Water system was studied by precipitation time measurement. The water contact angle indicated that the hydrophilicity and the biocompatibility corresponding to protein adsorption of PVDF membrane were improved significantly after blending with hydrophilic HPAE molecules. Various PVDF/PMMA (poly(vinylidene fluoride)/poly(methyl methacrylate)) blends were selected for mechanical testing in compression. At low PVDF content (less than 50/50 w/w), the blends remain amorphous and PVDF and PMMA are fully miscible. In PVDF-richer blends, PVDF crystallizes in part, leading to a PMMA-enriched homogeneous amorphous phase. In this study, the degree of crystallinity was set at equilibrium by appropriate annealing of the samples before testing. Mechanical analysis was focused on the low deformation range, and especially on the yield region. Depending on the test temperature and blend composition, three types of response were identified, depending on whether plastic deformation is influenced: 1) by the PMMA secondary relaxation motions, 2) by the PVDF/PMMA glass transition motions, or 3) by the crystallite-constrained PVDF chains.  相似文献

This article discusses an effective route to prepare amphiphilic diblock copolymers containing a poly(ethylene oxide) block and a polyolefin block that includes semicrystalline thermoplastics, such as polyethylene and syndiotactic polystyrene (s‐PS), and elastomers, such as poly(ethylene‐co‐1‐octene) and poly(ethylene‐co‐styrene) random copolymers. The broad choice of polyolefin blocks provides the amphiphilic copolymers with a wide range of thermal properties from high melting temperature ~270 °C to low glass‐transition temperature ~?60 °C. The chemistry involves two reaction steps, including the preparation of a borane group‐terminated polyolefin by the combination of a metallocene catalyst and a borane chain‐transfer agent as well as the interconversion of a borane terminal group to an anionic (? O?K+) terminal group for the subsequent ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The overall reaction process resembles a transformation from the metallocene polymerization of α‐olefins to the ring‐opening polymerization of ethylene oxide. The well‐defined reaction mechanisms in both steps provide the diblock copolymer with controlled molecular structure in terms of composition, molecular weight, moderate molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn < 2.5), and absence of homopolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, novel biodegradable materials were successfully generated, which have excellent mechanical properties in air during usage and storage, but whose structure easily disintegrates when immersed in water. The materials were prepared by melt blending poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(butylene adipate‐co‐terephthalate) (PBAT) with a small amount of oligomeric poly(aspartic acid‐co‐lactide) (PAL) as a degradation accelerator. The degradation behavior of the blends was investigated by immersing the blend films in phosphate‐buffered saline (pH = 7.3) at 40 °C. It was shown that the PAL content and composition significantly affected morphology, mechanical properties, and hydrolysis rate of the blends. It was observed that the blends containing PAL with higher molar ratios of L ‐lactyl [LA]/[Asp] had smaller PBAT domain size, showing better mechanical properties when compared with those containing PAL with lower molar ratios of [LA]/[Asp]. The degradation rates of both PLLA and PBAT components in the ternary blends simultaneously became higher for the blends containing PAL with higher molar ratios of [LA]/[Asp]. It was confirmed that the PLLA component and its decomposed materials efficiently catalyze the hydrolytic degradation of the PBAT component, but by contrast that the PBAT component and its decomposed materials do not catalyze the hydrolytic degradation of the PLLA component in the blends. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal oxidation of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and its blends with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were studied using oxygen uptake measurements. The rates of oxidation and maximum oxygen uptake contents were reduced as the content of PMMA was increased in the blends. The results were indicative of a stabilizing effect by PMMA on the oxidation of PEO. The oxidation reaction at 140°C was stopped at various stages and PMMA was separated from PEO and its molecular weights were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The decrease in the number-average molecular weight of PMMA was larger as the content of PEO increased in the blends. The visual appearance of the films suggested that phase separation did not occur after thermal oxidation. The activation energy for the rates of oxidation in the blends was slightly increased compared to pure PEO. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In a first step of this contribution, the observed glass transition temperature‐composition behavior of miscible blends of poly(styrene‐coN,N‐dimethylacrylamide) (SAD17) containing 17 mol % of N,N‐dimethylacrylamide and poly(styrene‐co‐acrylic acid) (SAA18, SAA27, and SAA32) containing increasing acrylic acid content, are analyzed according to theoretical approaches. Both Kwei and Brostow equations describe well the experimental data though better fits were obtained with the Brostow's approach. The specific interactions involved in these systems are a combination of intra and interassociation hydrogen bonding. The positive deviation from the linear mixing rule of Tg‐composition observed within the SAA18+SAD17 blend system, indicates that interassociation interactions are prevailing. More pronounced intra‐association interactions within the SAA32+SAD17 blend system led to a large negative deviation while a fine balance is established between these two types of interactions within the SAA27+SAD17 blend. A thermodynamic analysis was carried out according to the Painter‐Coleman association model. The miscibility and phase behavior of SAD17+SAA18 and SAD17+SAA27 blends are well predicted. However, this model predicts a partial miscibility of SAD17+SAA32 system. Finally, the fitting parameter free method developed by Coleman to predict the Tg‐composition behavior is applied. This method predicts fairly well the evolution trend of experimental Tgs of the SAA18+SAD17 and SAA27+SAD17 blend systems. However, the compositional dependence of SAA32+SAD17 blend Tg was not predictable by this method. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 47:2074–2082, 2009  相似文献

The structure and formation mechanism of a microporous phase‐inversion poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane exhibiting a relatively loosely packed agglomerate of semicrystalline globules are explored. The membrane has been prepared by the coagulation of a solution of PVDF in dimethylformamide by the action of 1‐octanol, which is a soft nonsolvent. Experimental observations pertain to the globule surface, which is dominated by a grainy nanostructure; the globular interior, which exhibits a range of fine structures (e.g., twisted sheets and treelike branches); and the globule–globule connections, which exhibit a sheetlike or ropelike structure. On the basis of the observed structural details and phase diagram considerations, it is proposed that the membrane structure is the result of a unique combination of a polymer crystallization and a liquid–liquid phase‐separation process, with end‐result globular structural features of remarkable uniformity. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Segmented copolyesters, namely, poly(butylene terephthalate)–poly(ethylene terephthalate‐co‐isophthalate‐co‐sebacate) (PBT‐PETIS), were synthesized with the melting transesterification processing in vacuo condition involving bulk polyester produced on a large scale (PBT) and ternary amorphous random copolyester (PETIS). Investigations on the morphology of segmented copolyesters were undertaken. The two‐phase morphology model was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. One of the phases was composed of crystallizable PBT, and the other was a homogeneous mixture of PETIS and noncrystallizable PBT. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
