Growth (length, biomass and mean growth rate) and reproduction (total duration, clitellum appearance, clitellum completion, cocoon commencement, rate of cocoon production, incubation period, hatching success and mean number of hatching per cocoon) of indigenous Lampito mauritii (Kinberg) in comparison with exotic Eudrilus eugeniae (Kinberg) cultured on three feed substrates-clay loam soil, cowdung and pressmud (filter cake) have been studied over a period of 360 days under laboratory conditions (30 +/- 2 degrees C, 60-65% moisture). There is a positive relationship between length and biomass of both worms cultured on three feed substrates throughout the period of study The decrease of worm length and biomass observed slightly on 63-70th days in Lampito mauritii and 42-49th days in Eudrilus eugeniae cultured on three fed substrates are the results of the onset of cocoon production. After 270 days both worms in all these fed substrates show decreasing trends of length and biomass which are due to continued reproduction and aging. Among the three fed substrates, pressmud supports significantly maximum worm length and biomass (between 90-130 days in Eudrilus eugeniae and 110-170 days in Lampito mauritii), earlier attainment of sexual maturity (between 51-76 days in Limpito mauritii and 27-37 days in Eudrilus eugeniae), earlier commencement of cocoon production (37.7 +/- 0.0 days in Eudrilus eugeniae and 76.4 +/- 0.10 days in Limpitomauritii), shorter incubation periods (16.3 +/- 0.28 days in Eudrilus eugeniae and 26.7 +/- 0.81 days in Limpito mauritii), more hatching success (98% in Limpito mauritii and 86% in Eudrilus eugeniae), more mean number of hatchling percocoon (3.2 + 0.03 in Limpito mauritii and 2.6 +/- 0.06 in Eudrilus eugeniae) and shorter duration of life cycle (108.8 +/- 0.07 days in Limpito mauritii and 60.2 +/- 0.09 days in Eudrilus eugeniae) than cowdung and clay loam soil.  相似文献

The present study was carried out to determine the physico-chemical characteristics and heavy metals in water and sediments in Uppanar Estuary, Nagapattinam, Southeast coast of India during January to December 2007. The minimum and maximum values of atmospheric and surface water temperatures (degrees C), salinity (per thousand), pH and dissolved oxygen (ml l(-1)) were: 26.0-35.0; 25.0-33.5; 8.0-35.0; 7.2-8.2 and 2.8-5.5 respectively. The ranges of nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate were: 7.05-24.23; 0.82-3.15; 0.31-2.18 and 40.0-198.0 (microM) respectively. The ranges of heavy metals in water (microg 1(-1)) and sediment (microg g(-1)) copper zinc, cadmium and mercury were: 2.45-18.25; 26.43-101.24; 1.23-24.35 and 0.01-0.22 and 5.02-81.27; 22.47-75.42; 2.25-10.06 and 0.01-0.16 respectively.  相似文献

The diversity of fungi, bacteria, yeast, actinomycetes and protozoa were analysed in the gut and casts of Eudrilus eugeniae, Lampito mauritii, Eisenia fetida and Perionyx excavatus, both qualitatively and quantitatively as influenced by different feed substrates like clay loam soil, cowdung and pressmud. While actinomycetes (Streptomyces albus, S. somaliensis, Nocardia asteroides, N. caviae and Saccharomonosporia) were not digested by any of these species of worms, protozoa (Amoeba proteus, A. terricola, Paramecium trichium, Euglena viridis, E. orientalis, Vorticella picta and Trichomonas hominis) and yeast (Candida tropicalis, C. krusei C. albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans) were totally digested. Certain species of fungi (Saksenae vasiformis, Mucor plumbeus, Cladosporium carrionii, C. herbacium, Alternaria sp., Cunninghamella echinulata, Mycetia sterila, Syncephalostrum racemosum, Curvalaria lunata, C. geniculata and Geotrichum candidum) and bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacterium antitratum, Mima polymorpha, Enterobacter aerogenes, E. cloacae, Proteus vulgaris, P. mirabilis, P. rettgeri, Escherichia coli, Staphylococus citreus, Bacillus subtilis, B. cereus, Enterococci and Micrococci) were completely digested. Certain other species were not digested fungi like Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavus, A. ochraceous, Trichoderma koningii (except by Eeugeniae), Fusarium moniliforme (except by E. eugeniae) and Rhizopus sp., and bacteria like Klebsiella pneumoniae and Morganella morganii) and these were multiplied during the transit of the organic residues through the gut of worms. The microbial proliferation was more in the casts, due to the environment prevailing--rich in nutrient supply and large surface area available for growth and reproduction of the microbes that lead to enhanced microbial activity and humic acid contents in the casts.  相似文献

The present study investigated the effect of increasing temperature stress on the thermotolerance of B. mori cross-breed PM x CSR2 and tissue specific differential expression of heat shock proteins at IVth and Vth instars. The larvae reared at 25 +/-1 degrees C and 70 +/- 5% relative humidity were treated as control. Larvae were subjected to heat shock temperatures of 34, 38 and 42 degrees C for 3 hr followed by 3 hr recovery. Expression of Heat shock protein 72 were analyzed by SDS-PAGE and confirmed by western blotting analysis. The impact of heat shock on commercial traits of cocoons was analyzed by following different strategies in terms of acquired thermotolerance over control. Resistance to heat shock was increased as larval development proceeds and increased thermotolerance is achieved with the induction of Heat shock protein 72 in the Vth instar larval haemolymph. Relative influence of heat shock temperatures on commercial traits corresponding to the generation of heat shock protein 72 was significantly improved over control. In PM x CSR2, cocoon and shell weight significantly increased to 9.90 and 11.90% over control respectively.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of natural biowaste substrates such as banana peel powder and coir powder at varying environmental parameters of pH (4-9) and temperature (20-50 degrees C) on the cellulase enzyme production by Aspergillus niger. The cellulase enzyme production was analyzed by measuring the amount of glucose liberated in IU ml(-1) by using the dinitrosalicylic acid assay method. The substrates were pretreated with 1% NaOH (alkaline treatment) and autoclaved. The maximum activity of the enzyme was assayed at varying pH with temperatures being constant and varying temperatures with pH being constant. The highest activity of the enzyme at varying pH was recorded at pH 6 for banana peel powder (0.068 +/- 0.002 IU ml) and coir powder (0.049 +/- 0.002 IU ml(-1)) and the maximum activity of the enzyme at varying temperature was recorded at 35 degrees C for both banana peel powder (0.072 +/- 0.001 IU ml(-1)) and coir powder (0.046 +/- 0.003 IU ml(-1)). At varying temperatures and pH the high level of enzyme production was obtained at 35 degrees C and pH 6 by using both the substrates, respectively. However among the two substrates used for the production of cellulases by Aspergillus niger banana peel powder showed maximum enzymatic activity than coir powder as substrate.  相似文献

Subcritical water hydrolysis was carried out to produce valued materials from squid viscera, the waste product of fish processing industries. The reaction temperatures for hydrolysis of rawand deoiled squid viscera were maintained from 180 to 280 degrees C for5 min. The ratio of material to water forhydrolysis was 1:50. Most of the proteins from deoiled squid viscera were recovered at high temperature. The protein yield in raw squid viscera hydrolyzate decreased with the rise of temperature. The reducing sugar yield was higher at high temperature in subcritical water hydrolysis of both raw and deoiled squid viscera. The highest yield of amino acids in raw and deoiled squid viscera hydrolyzates were 233.25 +/- 3.25 and 533.78 +/- 4.13 mg g(-1) at 180 and 280 degrees C, respectively. Most amino acids attained highest yield at the reaction temperature range of 180-220 degrees C and 260-280 degrees C for raw and deoiled samples, respectively. The recovery of amino acids from deoiled squid viscera was about 1.5 times higher than that of raw squid viscera.  相似文献

The knowledge of population effects of food on tropical, filter-feeding cladocerans is scarce because a reduced number of species has been extensively studied. Ceriodaphnia rigaudi Richard 1894, a small-sized cladoceran distributed mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, was studied. The aim of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of the reproductive biology of a poor-known Cladoceran; for this we assessed the effect of feeding and temperature on the reproduction and life cycle of this species. Three microalga species (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Ankistrodesmus falcatus, and Chlorella vulgaris) were supplied as food each at a concentration of 12 mg l(-1) (dry weight, equivalent to 1.3 x 10(6), 0.4 x 10(6) and 1.35 x 10(6) cell m1(-1), respectively, and equivalent to 7.8 microg C ml(-1), at two temperatures (20 and 25 degrees C). We evaluated, among other responses, longevity, total progeny, survival, life expectancy at birth and fecundity. Organisms fed with the microalgae A. falcatus and P subcapitata presented both higher longevity (30.7 +/- 5.91, 26.6 +/- 3.59 days, respectively) and total progeny (45 +/- 13.80, 40.7 +/- 0.66 neonates female (-1) values than those organisms fed C. vulgaris (13.5 +/- 4.63 days and 17.6 +/- 6.19 neonates female (-1), respectively). On the other hand, temperature affected significantly the population parameters of C. rigaudi, recording maximal longevity values (56.1 +/- 9.41 days) at 20 degrees C in organisms fed A. falcatus; however, age at first reproduction and total progeny were negatively affected by this temperature: sexual maturation of the females was delayed until the age of 16 days and the number of neonates produced was smaller (9.8 +/- 3.45 with C. vulgaris; 24.7 +/- 6.01 with P subcapitata, and 35.5 +/- 8.59 neonates female(-1) with A. falcatus). The best reproductive responses for C. rigaudi in this study were obtained with A. falcatus at degrees 25 degrees C.  相似文献

For understanding the potential utility in field scale production of vermicompost and vermiprotein economically, Eisenia fetida was cultured to establish the influence of (i) prevailing tropical semiarid (North-East region of Karnataka, India) environmental factors and (ii) different animal manures (cattle, horse and 1:1 mixture of cattle and horse) (on its growth, reproduction and life span. In three forms of diet, growth (mg/d/g live weight of worm) was almost similar, but the biomass in cattle manure (565.7 +/- 15.3) was significantly more than horse manure (494.9 +/- 22.8) and 1:1 mixture (470.3 +/- 22.0). Mean cocoon production (per worm/week) in horse manure (0.16) was significantly (P<0.001) lower than that in cattle manure (1.6) and in 1:1 mixed manure (1.4). Cattle favoured biomass, growth and cocoon production. Horse manure inhibited cocoon production and the conserved energy in this process might have been added to the body weight almost equal to that in cattle manure. In 1:1 mixed manure, the biomass was less due to moderate cocoon production (presumably due to the stimulatory influence of 50% cattle manure) under semifavorable nutrients and environmental conditions. Fecundity of the worms declined with aging, despite favourable nutrients and environmental conditions. Worms survived up to 92, 68 and 66 weeks in cattle manure, 1:1 mixed manure and horse manure respectively.  相似文献

Paper mills have severe problem in disposing effluent or semisolid sludge despite repeated recycling. It requires treatment prior to disposal of sludge. In recent years biological treatment methods received much attention and considered as efficient low-cost treatment. One such method is vermiculture treatment. The present study was carried out to dispose the paper mill sludge biologically using 2 exotic species (Eudrilus eugineae and Eiseniafoetida) and an indigenous species (Lampito mauritii) of earthworm. The paper mill sludge in various concentration 25%,50% and 75% were subjected to vermitub treatment for a period of 60 days. During the period of study data were collected on reproductive strategies of earthworm and chemical analysis of wastes before and after treatment. Results obtained indicate that 25% concentration of sludge was ideal and of the three worms used Eiseniafoetida proved to be the best worm for biomanagement.  相似文献

The crustaceans Gammarus salinus Spooner and Idotea balthica Pallas live in brackish waters and are capable of tolerating a variety of temperature and salinity conditions. Thus far, the capacity for non-genetic adaptation of such euryplastic animals has only been tested at different levels of constant temperatures. If exposed to both constant (8°, 14° or 20°C) and fluctuating (daily fluctuation: 8°?20°C) temperatures, the tested individuals reveal significant differences in heat resistance which become apparent within 12 h. G. salinus and I. balthica exhibit reasonable (meaningful) heat resistance, i.e., a positive correlation between the degree of heat resistance and the level of adaptation temperature (AT). Following a shift in AT (8° → 20°C or 20° → 8°C) the degree of resistance changes rather fast. This leads, under fluctuating temperature conditions, to diurnal changes in the degree of heat resistance. I. balthica also shows an endogenous diurnal periodicity of its heat resistance. In G. salinus, long-term exposure (2 to 4 weeks) to fluctuating temperatures [duration of temperature change: 2 h (Δ/2 h)] produces, during the day, a mean resistance value which coincides with the value obtained for AT 14°C-controls. This fact results from temperature-independent adaptation speeds (same after decrease and increase of AT). However, fast temperature change (ΔT/1 h) during exposure to fluctuating temperatures leads to a significant augmentation of heat resistance, presumably due to additional stress; such fast temperature changes are less well tolerated than slow fluctuations (ΔT/2 h). In I. balthica, low ATs are less efficient in terms of heat resistance than high ATs (great difference between AT=14° and 20 °C; small difference between AT=8° and 14 °C). In males, lowering of AT from 20° to 8 °C results, within the first 12 h, to faster loss of heat resistance than is the case for gain in heat resistance after AT increase from 8° to 20 °C. However, after prolonged exposure to the new ATs, completion of readaptation is temperature-independent. Under conditions of fluctuating temperatures (ΔT/2 h) resistance increases beyond the mean value (AT=14 °C). Further increase in resistance can be obtained through fast temperature changes (ΔT/1 h). In G. salinus, which occupies habitats with more extensive temperature fluctuations, the responses studied are less pronounced than in I. balthica.  相似文献

Seeds from three provenances of Pinus brutia were stratified for 0 or 45 d (days) at 4 +/- 1 degrees C and then germinated at 15 degrees C or 20 degrees C on filter paper saturated with polyethylene glycol solutions to provide water potentials of 0, -0.2 and -0.4 MPa (mega Pascal). Regardless of stratification, germination was lower at 15 degrees C than 20 degrees C for seeds of all provenances. Stratification significantly increased germination percentage at all water potentials regardless of the germination temperatures. Lowering the water potential to -0.4 MPa reduced germination for all three provenances in unstratified and stratified seeds when averaged for two temperatures, but reaction to the increased water stress was different among the provenances. Combined over two temperatures, stratified or unstratified seeds from the highest elevation (Cehennemdere) had the lowest germination performance at all water potentials, and stratified and nonstratified seeds from a coastal elevation (Silifke) had the highest germination parameters at the lowest water potential (-0.4 MPa). It might be concluded that seed germination and resistance to water stress vary according to provenance and stratification.  相似文献

Juvenile blue crabs, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, were grown in the laboratory at different temperatures, and metabolic-rate determinations were made. Growth is shown to be dependent upon temperature. Crabs kept at high temperatures (34° and 27°C) grow faster than those kept at lower temperatures (13°, 15°, and 20°C). Increase in size per molt is less at higher temperatures than at lower ones. Mortality is directly proportional to temperature between 13° and 34°C and is very high during ecdysis at elevated temperatures. Metabolic rate increases with temperature, but various degrees of acclimation are seen after 4 weeks exposure. No acclimation of general activity to temperature was found. The findings are applied theoretically to crabs living in the region of heated discharge canals of electrical generators: the motile blue crab could extend its growing season without decreasing size at maturity by active selection of thermal surroundings.In part based on a thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science at the University of Florida, USA.  相似文献

Incubation period, hatching success, and emergence percentage in loggerhead (Caretta caretta) nests were quantified during the 1993 and 1995 nesting seasons and following incubation seasons in Minabe, Wakayama, Japan. Sand and nest temperatures were also monitored. Over the seasons, daily mean sand temperature at nest depth fluctuated between 18.0°C and 33.3°C, with a steep increase in the second week of July and a peak in late August. Temperatures inside the nest chambers were a few degrees above those of the surrounding sand at the end of incubation. The incubation period ranged from 46 to 82 days. A significant negative correlation was found between mean sand temperature and incubation period. The relationship conformed to the day-degree concept. There was no significant seasonal trend in hatching success, but many pre-emergent hatchlings were found dead in most of the clutches during the warmest part of the season. Emergence percentage was correlated with mean sand temperature calculated for 4 days before emergence, suggesting that mortality may be due to heat. This heat-related mortality is considered to be a common phenomenon at our study site, because the peak in emergences coincides with the peak in high temperatures. These temperature effects on hatchling mortality must be taken into account in estimates of hatchling sex ratios. Because sand temperatures already exceed the optimal thermal range for incubation, this population is vulnerable to even small temperature increases resulting from global warming.  相似文献

This paper investigates the combined effects of temperature and salinity on resistance-adaptation to temperature in the oligochaete Enchytraeus albidus Henle. This worm shows reasonable resistance-adaptation to both cold (-13.2°C) and heat (35.8 °C). Acclimation to high salinity increases the degree of resistance to temperature extremes. The effect of salinity on heat-resistance, and especially on cold-resistance, decreases with rising adaptation-temperature. While a general effect of cations (Na, K, Ca, Mg) on temperature resistance does not exist, the influence of special ions depends upon ion concentration and adaptation-temperature; addition of Na, K, Ca and Mg reduces cold-resistance in cold-acclimated (5 °C) individuals, while, in warm-acclimated (23 °C) specimens, cold tolerance increases after addition of K and Ca. Heat-resistance decreases in warm-acclimated worms after addition of Mg and Ca. Higher proportions of cations reduce thermal resistance in all cases. Over the salinity range which allows homeo-osmotic conditions (2 to 15‰), E. albidus does not exhibit a constant resistance level (at least not to heat). The cryoprotective agent dimethylsulphoxide is highly effective both in cold and warm acclimated worms.  相似文献

Sediment reworking rates of Axiothella rubrocincta (Johnson, 1901) (Polychaeta: Maldanidae) were measured in situ in Tomales Bay, California (USA), from August, 1969 through July, 1970. On the average, each adult worm (approximate fresh weight=1 g) reworks about 5 g dry sediment d-1 at a mean temperature of 13.4°C and a mean salinity of 31.8.Reworking rates are positively correlated with temperature and salinity, and negatively with sediment organic carbon, sedimentation rates and grain size. An inverse correlation exists between sediment reworking rates (g dry sediment g-1 wet wt of worm d-1) and g wet weight of worm. Sediment parameters deseribing unworked sediments are not significantly different from those for fecal sediments. Although these data suggest this species to be a non-selective deposit-feeder, it is more likely that it is faculatively selective.  相似文献

Moderation of stream temperatures by riparian shading and groundwater are known to promote growth and survival of salmonid fishes, but effects of riparian shade and groundwater on to be growth of warmwater stream fishes are poorly understood or assumed to be negligible. We used stream temperature models to relate shading from riparian vegetation and groundwater inflow to summer water temperatures in Missouri Ozark streams and evaluated effects of summer water temperatures on smallmouth bass, Micropterus dolomieu, growth using a bioenergetics model. Bioenergetics model simulations revealed that adult smallmouth bass in non-spring-fed streams have lower growth potential during summer than fish in spring-fed streams, are subject to mass loss when stream temperatures exceed 27 degrees C, and will likely exhibit greater interannual variation in growth during summer if all growth-influencing factors, other than temperature, are identical between the two stream types. Temperature models indicated that increased riparian shading will expand the longitudinal extent of thermal habitat capable of supporting adult smallmouth bass growth in spring-fed stream reaches when mean daily air temperatures exceed 27 degrees C. Optimum growth temperature (22 degrees C) will be present only in spring-fed streams under these conditions. Potential for increasing shade through riparian restoration is greatest for streams <5 m wide and along north-south reaches of larger streams. However, temperature models also indicated that restoring riparian shading to maximum levels throughout a watershed would increase the total stream mileage capable of supporting positive growth of adult smallmouth bass by only 1-6% when air temperatures are at or near average summer maxima; increases in suitable thermal habitat would be greatest in watersheds with higher spring densities. Riparian management for maintenance or restoration of the thermal habitat of adult smallmouth bass during summer should be focused in areas strongly influenced by groundwater. Restoring riparian shading along spring-fed warmwater streams will likely benefit adult smallmouth bass growth and may ultimately influence population sizes.  相似文献

Fruits of Aisandra butyracea (Roxb.) Lamb. were collected from two sites located at different altitudes in Kumaun Himalaya for analyzing the seed maturity in relation to various fruit and seed characters. The mean seed size (length x width) across the collection dates varied between 186.44 +/- 0.05 and 238.17 +/- 0.5 mm2 across both the elevations. The fruit colour changed from dark green in the beginning to pale yellow on the maturity. The range of seed moisture content (62.83 +/- 1.33 to 63.46 +/- 0.89%) coincided with maximum germination. The colour change and seed moisture content appear to be the major indicators of seed maturation in A. butyracea.  相似文献

In the present study short-term (96 hr) toxicity of mercury in relation to water hardness (270 and 560 mg/l) and temperature (16 degrees C and 35 degrees C) to the fingerlings of Indian major carps, i.e. catla, rohu and mrigal has been evaluated using static bioassay. The LC5o indicates that both water hardness and temperature played significant role in mercury toxicity. The test fishes were found most resistant with water hardness of 560 mg/l at 16 degrees C as compared to that of water hardness of 560 mg/l at 35 degrees C and water hardness of 270 mg/l at both the temperatures, i.e. 35 and 16 degrees C. Whereas the order of relative sensitivities of these fishes for mercury ions were recorded as catla>rohu>mrigal. The safe concentrations of mercury were ranged in between 12.133 to 19.689 microg/l for catla; 64.039 to 82.555 microg/l for rohu and 73.510 to 89.585 microg/l for mrigal for both the water hardness and temperature.  相似文献

Sago, the tapioca starch is manufactured by over 800 small-scale units located in the Salem district, Tamil Nadu, India. During the processing of sago it generates huge quantities of biodegradable solid waste, as crushed tubers. In present study an attempt was made to convert these biodegradable solid sago tubers into value added compost using an exotic earthworm, Eudrilus eugeniae. The experiments were carried out in a plastic tray at various concentrations of sago-sludge (50% 75% and 100%) for a period of 90 days. During the vermicomposting, data were collected on life form (cocoon, non clitellates, clitellates) of earthworm and it was found to be high in 50% followed by 75% and 100% concentrations. Chemical analysis of worked substrates showed a step wise increase of nitrogen and phosphorus. The fold increase of phosphorus and nitrogen were found to be high for sago-sludge undergoing vermicomposting than the control. During the composting period the organic carbon decreased from its initial value of 58, 76 and 107 mg/kg to 21, 24 and 65 mg/kg for 50, 70 and 100%, respectively The microbial analysis showed that after 75 days of composting, their population stabilized and further increase in composting period did not increase their population size. The results indicate that 50% and 75% concentration of sludge mixed with bedding material was ideal for the vermicomposting.  相似文献

The survival of Orchestia chiliensis (Milne Edwards, 1840) was investigated at salinities between 0.3 and 68 and constant or 10 C° cyclic temperatures between 5° and 25° C. Mortality increased with age, temperature and at salinity extremes. Small individuals show little seasonal acclimatisation apart from increased thermal tolerance at the highest exposure temperature. Larger individuals show a lateral shift in the mortality curve to the right in summer, giving increased survival at most salinities. Salinity had less effect on amphipods in cyclic regimes and survival was similar in 5° to 15° C and 10° to 20° C cycles. Mortality of larger individuals was higher in the 15° to 25° C cycle, but seasonal acclimatisation gave increased resistance at all fluctuating temperatures during the summer. Mortality in cyclic temperatures was higher than at similar constant temperatures. O. chiliensis does not actively evade immersion and diel temperature changes of 10 C° represent an important stress factor. This would affect all life stages and influence field populations both in the winter and the summer.  相似文献
