The thermal degradation of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) [P(HB‐HV)] was studied using thermogravimetry (TG). In the thermal degradation of PHB, the temperature at the onset of weight loss (To) was derived by To = 0.97B + 259, where B represents the heating rate (°C/min). The temperature at which the weight loss rate was maximum (Tp) was Tp = 1.07B + 273, and the final temperature (Tf) at which degradation was completed was Tf = 1.10B + 280. The percentage of the weight loss at temperature Tp (Cp) was 69 ± 1% whereas the percentage of the weight loss at temperature Tf (Cf) was 96 ± 1%. In the thermal degradation of P(HB‐HV) (7:3), To = 0.98B + 262, Tp = 1.00B + 278, and Tf = 1.12B + 285. The values of Cp and Cf were 62 ± 7 and 93 ± 1%, respectively. The derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) curves of PHB confirmed only one weight loss step change because the polymer mainly consisted of the HB monomer only. The DTG curves of P(HB‐HV), however, suggested multiple weight loss step changes; this was probably due to the different evaporation rates of the two monomers. The incorporation of 10 and 30 mol % of the HV component into the polyester increased the various thermal temperatures (To, Tp, andTf) by 7–12°C (measured at B = 20°C/min). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The thermal degradation kinetics of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) [poly(HB–HV)] under nitrogen was studied by thermogravimetry (TG). The results show that the thermal degradation temperatures (To, Tp, and Tf) increased with an increasing heating rate (B). Poly(HB–HV) was thermally more stable than PHB because its thermal degradation temperatures, To(0), Tp(0), and Tf(0)—determined by extrapolation to B = 0°C/min—increased by 13°C–15°C over those of PHB. The thermal degradation mechanism of PHB and poly(HB–HV) under nitrogen were investigated with TG–FTIR and Py–GC/MS. The results show that the degradation products of PHB are mainly propene, 2‐butenoic acid, propenyl‐2‐butenoate and butyric‐2‐butenoate; whereas, those of poly(HB–HV) are mainly propene, 2‐butenoic acid, 2‐pentenoic acid, propenyl‐2‐butenoate, propenyl‐2‐pentenoate, butyric‐2‐butenoate, pentanoic‐2‐pentenoate, and CO2. The degradation is probably initiated from the chain scission of the ester linkage. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 89: 1530–1536, 2003  相似文献

Microbial synthesis of copolymers of [R]-3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) and 4-hydroxybutyrate (4HB), P(3HB-co-4HB), by Alcaligenes eutrophus, Alcaligenes latus, and Comamonas acidovorans from various carbon sources has been studied. The copolyester compositions varied from 0 to 100 mol% 4HB, depending on the microorganism and the combination of carbon substrates supplied. The thermal and physical properties of compositions with 0–100 mol% 4HB were investigated. The copolyesters represented a wide variety of polymeric materials, from hard crystalline plastic to very elastic rubbers, depending on composition. The copolyester films with high 4HB fractions (64–100 mol% 4HB) exhibited the characteristics of a thermoplastic elastomer, and the tensile strength increased from 17 to 104 MPa as the 4HB fraction increased. The enzymatic degradation of P(3HB-co-4HB) films was studied in an aqueous solution of extracellular polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) depolymerase from Alcaligenes faecalis or lipase from Rhizopus delemer. The erosion rate of P(3HB-co-4HB) films was strongly dependent on the copolymer composition. In addition, environmental degradation of P(3HB-co-4HB) films in sea water was investigated.  相似文献

The miscibility and crystallization kinetics of the blends of random poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) [P(HB‐co‐HV)] copolymer and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). It was found that P(HB‐co‐HV)/PMMA blends were miscible in the melt. Thus the single glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the blends within the whole composition range suggests that P(HB‐co‐HV) and PMMA were totally miscible for the miscible blends. The equilibrium melting point (T°m) of P(HB‐co‐HV) in the P(HB‐co‐HV)/PMMA blends decreased with increasing PMMA. The T°m depression supports the miscibility of the blends. With respect to the results of crystallization kinetics, it was found that both the spherulitic growth rate and the overall crystallization rate decreased with the addition of PMMA. The kinetics retardation was attributed to the decrease in P(HB‐co‐HV) molecular mobility and dilution of P(HB‐co‐HV) concentration resulting from the addition of PMMA, which has a higher Tg. According to secondary nucleation theory, the kinetics of spherulitic crystallization of P(HB‐co‐HV) in the blends was analyzed in the studied temperature range. The crystallizations of P(HB‐co‐HV) in P(HB‐co‐HV)/PMMA blends were assigned to n = 4, regime III growth process. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 3595–3603, 2004  相似文献

The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB‐co‐HV))/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) blends have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). It was found that P(HB‐co‐HV)/PVAc blends were miscible in the melt over the whole compositions. Thus the blend exhibited a single glass transition temperature (Tg), which increased with increasing PVAc composition. The spherulitic morphologies of P(HB‐co‐HV)/PVAc blends indicated that the PVAc was predominantly segregated into P(HB‐co‐HV) interlamellar or interfibrillar regions during P(HB‐co‐HV) crystallization because of the volume‐filled spherulites. As to the crystallization kinetics study, it was found that the overall crystallization and crystal growth rates decreased with the addition of PVAc. The kinetics retardation was primarily attributed to the reduction of chain mobility and dilution of P(HB‐co‐HV) upon mixing with higher Tg PVAc. The overall crystallization rate was predominantly governed by the spherulitic growth rate and promoted by the samples treated with the quenched state because of the higher nucleation density. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Isothermal and non‐isothermal crystallization kinetics of microbial poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate) [P(3HB‐3HHx)] was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and 13C solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Avrami analysis was performed to obtain the kinetic parameters of primary crystallization. The results showed that the Avrami equation was suitable for describing the isothermal and non‐isothermal crystallization processes of P(3HB‐3HHx). The equilibrium melting temperature of P(3HB‐3HHx) and its nucleation constant of crystal growth kinetics, which were obtained by using the Hoffman–Weeks equation and the Lauritzen–Hoffmann model, were, respectively, 121.8 °C and 2.87 × 105 K2 when using the empirical ‘universal’ values of U* = 1500 cal mol?1. During the heating process, the melting behaviour of P(3HB‐3HHx) for both isothermal and non‐isothermal crystallization showed multiple melting peaks, which was the result of melting recrystallization. The lower melting peak resulted from the melting of crystals formed during the corresponding crystallization process, while the higher melting peak resulted from the recrystallization that took place during the heating process. Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (P(3HB-co-3HHx)) was produced by Aeromonas sp. KC014 strain isolated from Taiwan in soil environment in the flask and fermentor cultures. The medium optimization, such as carbon source and nitrogen source, carbon-nitrogen ratio was conducted to obtain the optimum 3-hydroxyhexanoate content. The defined medium with dodecanoic acid as the carbon source and (NH4)2SO4 as the nitrogen source was obtained as the main medium. When cells grown in medium containing 30 g/L dodecanoic acid, 15 g/L sodium gluconate and 1 g/L soytone (C/N was 30/1) as final PHA concentration, the cell dry weight and HB content of 5.16 g/L, 14.0 g/L and 36.0%, respectively, were obtained. The maximum HHx/PHA content increased from 0.1% to 1.3% nearly 12-fold when the dissolved oxygen was decreased from 40% to 20%. P(3HB-co-3HHx) biosynthesis was triggered by the addition of limited nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium to get a maximum HHx/PHA content of 14% in 95 hours. This work was presented at 13 th YABEC symposium held at Seoul, Korea, October 20–22, 2007.  相似文献

Atactic poly(methylmethacrylate), aPMMA, was blended with poly(3‐D(−)hydroxybutyrate), PHB, up to a maximum composition of 25% of polyester, at 190°C in a Brabender‐like apparatus. The resulting blends quenched from the melt to room temperature were completely amorphous, and exhibited a single glass transition using DSC and DMTA, indicating miscibility of the components for this time–temperature history. Tensile experiments showed that at room temperature the 10/90 and 20/80 PHB/aPMMA blends exhibited higher values of strain at break, and slight decreases of the modulus and stress at break compared to neat aPMMA. The tensile energy at break was almost twice that of neat aPMMA. Tensile tests were also performed at 80°C, at which point the 25/75 and 20/80 PHB/aPMMA blends are above Tg, while the 10/90 and neat aPMMA are below Tg. The stress–strain curves obtained were functions of the physical state of the amorphous phase, and also depended on the difference between the test temperatures and Tg. In particular, comparing the neat aPMMA and the blends, decreases of the modulus and stress at break and a respectable increase in the strain at break were observed in the latter. Finally, the results were commented considering the thermal degradation of PHB in the melt during the blend preparation. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 75: 746–753, 2000  相似文献

Water sorption and diffusion have been investigated in poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and three poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) copolymers [P(HB‐HV)] by means of a Cahn electromicrobalance. Permeability of these samples have been determined using a gravimetric permeation cell. Two experimental setups were used for the gravimetric sorption measurements, under dynamic and static conditions, respectively. The differences observed in the results obtained using these techniques are discussed. The sorption measurements have evidenced the tendency of water molecules to form aggregates or clusters in the polymer. In addition, the static sorption method revealed the potential of PHB and P(HB‐HV) to undergo molecular relaxations, eventually leading to a partial desorption of the previously sorbed water after an induction period. The clustering effect was adequately described by the polycondensation model. On the other hand, the interpretation of the diffusivity in terms of mobility coefficients has revealed a competition between a plasticization effect and clustering. As a whole, water transport properties in PHB and its copolymers can be considered to be very close in magnitude to those of common thermoplastics such as PVC and PET. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Segregation morphology of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-10% 3-hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB-co-10% HV)/PVAc blends crystallized at 70 °C have been investigated by means of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Morphological parameters including the crystal thickness (lc) and the amorphous layer thickness (la) were deduced from the one-dimensional correlation function (γ(z)). Blending with PVAc thickened the PHB crystals but not the P(HB-co-10% HV) crystals. On the basis of the composition variation of la, and the volume fraction of lamellar stacks (?s) revealed that PHB/PVAc blends created the interlamellar segregation morphology when the weight fraction of PVAc (wPVAc)≤0.2 and the interlamellar and interfibrillar segregation coexisted when wPVAc>0.2, while P(HB-co-10% HV)/PVAc blends yielded the interfibrillar segregation morphology at all blend compositions. For both PHB/PVAc and P(HB-co-10% HV)/PVAc blends, the distance of PVAc segregation was promoted by increasing PVAc composition and the distance of PVAc segregation in P(HB-co-10% HV)/PVAc blends was greater than in PHB/PVAc at a given PVAc composition. The crystal growth rate played a key role in controlling the segregation of PVAc.  相似文献

The lamellar morphology of a melt-miscible blend consisting of random poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB-co-HV)) copolymer containing 10 mol% HV units and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) prepared by solution casting films have been investigated by means of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). The composition dependence of the amorphous layer thickness (la), and the volume fraction of the P(HB-co-HV) lamellar stack (φs) revealed that the interfibrillar segregation morphology was generated, where the extent of interfibrillar segregation of PMMA increased with increasing PMMA content. The Lorentz-corrected SAXS profiles of the blends crystallized at Tc=40 C has observed “zero-angle scattering”, attributed to the electron density contrast between the lamellar stack domains consisting of alternating crystalline/amorphous layers and the PMMA-rich domains located outside the lamellar stack domains.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine whether the surface modifications of the various poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐4‐hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB‐co‐4HB)] copolymer scaffolds fabricated would enhance mouse fibroblast cells (L929) attachment and proliferation. The P(3HB‐co‐4HB) copolymer with a wide range of 4HB monomer composition (16–91 mol %) was synthesized by a local isolate Cupriavidus sp. USMAA1020 by employing the modified two‐stage cultivation and by varying the concentrations of 4HB precursors, namely γ‐butyrolactone and 1,4‐butanediol. Five different processing techniques were used in fabricating the P(3HB‐co‐4HB) copolymer scaffolds such as solvent casting, salt‐leaching, enzyme degradation, combining salt‐leaching with enzyme degradation, and electrospinning. The increase in 4HB composition lowered melting temperatures (Tm) but increased elongation to break. P(3HB‐co‐91 mol % 4HB) exhibited a melting point of 46°C and elongation to break of 380%. The atomic force analysis showed an increase in the average surface roughness as the 4HB monomer composition increased. The mouse fibroblasts (L929) cell attachment was found to increase with high 4HB monomer composition in copolymer scaffolds. These results illustrate the importance of a detailed characterization of surface architecture of scaffolds to provoke specific cellular responses. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The premelting behavior of bacterially synthesized polyester poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate), abbreviated as P(HB-co-HHx), was investigated by two-dimensional Fourier-transform infrared (2D FTIR) correlation spectroscopy. The temperature-dependent dynamic spectra were measured over a temperature range of 25–300°C. We focused our study on the thermally induced intensity fluctuations of bands for CO (1700–1760 cm−1), C H (2910–3010 cm−1) and C O C groups (1220–1310 cm−1) stretching vibrations. Changes of crystalline conformation due to the thermal perturbation could be detected by the intensity and location variations of those characteristic bands responding to the variations of dipole moments. 2D correlation analysis indicated that the appearance of fully amorphous component did not happen simultaneously with the disappearance of crystalline component, suggesting that there was an intermediate state between ordered crystalline and amorphous states in P(HB-co-HHx). © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The phase structure of poly‐(R)‐(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/chitosan and poly‐(R)‐(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (P(HB‐co‐HV))/chitosan blends were studied with 1H CRAMPS (combined rotation and multiple pulse spectroscopy). 1H T1 was measured with a modified BR24 sequence that yielded an intensity decay to zero mode rather than the traditional inversion‐recovery mode. 1H T was measured with a 40‐kHz spin‐lock pulse inserted between the initial 90° pulse and the BR24 pulse train. The chemical shift scale is referenced to the methyl group of PHB as 1.27 ppm relative to tetramethylsilane (TMS) based on 1H liquid NMR of PHB. Single exponential T1 decay is observed for the β‐hydrogen of PHB or P(HB‐co‐HV) at 5.4 ppm and for the chitosan at 3.7 ppm. T1 values of the blends are either faster than or intermediate to those of the plain polymers. The T decay of β‐hydrogen is bi‐exponential. The slow T decay component is interpreted as the crystalline phase of PHB or P(HB‐co‐HV). The degree of crystallinity decreases with increasing wt % of chitosan in the blend. The fast T of β‐hydrogen and the T of chitosan in the blends either follow the same trend as or faster than the weight‐averaged values based on the T of the plain polymers. Together with the observation by differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) of a melting point depression and one effective glass transition temperature in the blends, the experimental evidence strongly suggests that chitosan is miscible with either PHB or P(HB‐co‐HV) at all compositions. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) [P(3HB‐co‐3HV)] co‐polymer has immense potential in the field of environmental and biomedical sciences as biodegradable and biocompatible material. The present study examines a filamentous N2‐fixing cyanobacterium, Nostoc muscorum Agardh as a potent feedstock for P(3HB‐co‐3HV) co‐polymer production and characterization of co‐polymer film for commercial applications. RESULTS: Under photoautotrophic growth conditions, N. muscorum Agardh accumulated the homopolymer of poly‐β‐hydroxybutyrate (PHB), whereas synthesis of P(3HB‐co‐3HV) co‐polymer was detected under propionate‐ and valerate‐supplemented conditions. Exogenous carbons such as acetate, fructose and glucose supplementation with propionate/valerate was found highly stimulatory for the co‐polymer accumulation; the content reached 58–60% of dry cell weight (dcw) under P‐/N‐deficiencies with 0.4% acetate + 0.4% valerate supplementation, the highest value reported so far for P(3HB‐co‐3HV) co‐polymer‐producing cyanobacterial species. The material properties of the films were studied by mechanical tests, surface analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). CONCLUSION: N. muscorum Agardh, a photoautotrophic N2‐fixing cyanobacterium, emerged as a potent host for production of P(3HB‐co‐3HV) co‐polymer with polymer content 60% of dry cell weight. The material properties of the films were found to be comparable with that of the commercial polymer, thus advocating its potential applications in various fields. The miscibility, melting and crystallization behaviour of poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate], PHB, and oligo[(R,S)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate]‐diol, oligo‐HB, blends have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry: thermograms of blends containing up to 60 wt% oligo‐HB showed behaviour characteristic of single‐phase amorphous glasses with a composition dependent glass transition, Tg, and a depression in the equilibrium melting temperature of PHB. The negative value of the interaction parameter, determined from the equilibrium melting depression, confirms miscibility between blend components. In parallel studies, glass transition relaxations of different melt‐crystallized polymer blends containing 0–20 wt% oligo‐HB were dielectrically investigated between ?70 °C and 120 °C in the 100 Hz to 50 kHz range. The results revealed the existence of a single α‐relaxation process for blends, indicating the miscibility between amorphous fractions of PHB and oligo‐HB. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of poly(R‐3‐hydroxybutyrate)/poly(ε‐caprolactone)/1,6‐hexamethylene diisocyanate‐segmented poly(ester‐urethanes), having different compositions and different block lengths, were synthesized by one‐step solution polymerization. The molecular weight of poly(R‐3‐hydroxybutyrate)‐diol, PHB‐diol, hard segments was in the range of 2100–4400 and poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐diol, PCL‐diol, soft segments in the range of 1080–5800. The materials obtained were investigated by using differential scanning calorimetry, wide angle X‐ray diffraction and mechanical measurements. All poly(ester‐urethanes) investigated were semicrystalline with Tm varying within 126–148°C. DSC results showed that Tg are shifted to higher temperature with increasing content of PHB hard segments and decreasing molecular weight of PCL soft segments. This indicates partial compatibility of the two phases. In poly(ester‐urethanes) made from PCL soft segments of molecular weight (Mn ≥ 2200), a PCL crystalline phase, in addition to the PHB crystalline phase, was observed. As for the mechanical tensile properties of poly(ester‐urethane) cast films, it was found that the ultimate strength and the elongation at the breakpoint decrease with increasing PHB hard segment content. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The kinetics of crystallization induced by orotic acid (OA) and boron nitride (BN) as nucleating agents were investigated for bacterial poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyhexanoate)s (P(HB‐co‐HH)s) containing from 0 to 18% HH monomer units. The nucleation efficiency of these two chemicals was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). It was found that both orotic acid and boron nitride are able to nucleate the crystallization of PHB. In the case of P(HB‐co‐HH) copolymers, orotic acid showed an outstanding nucleating effect. The comparison of half‐crystallization times shows that for P(HB‐co‐10% HH), the crystallization initiated by orotic acid is more than three time faster than the one induced by boron nitride (t1/2BN/t1/2OA(60°C) = 3.7 and t1/2BN/t1/2OA(90°C) = 4.5). According to the fact that orotic acid is a biodegradable, biocompatible and a nontoxic chemical, this nucleating agent is a promising solution for PHAs used in medical applications such as implants. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal properties of poly(phenylene sulfide amide) (PPSA) prepared using sodium sulfide, sulfur, and thiourea as sulfur sources which reacted with dichlorobenzamide (DCBA) and alkali in polar organic solvent at the atmospheric pressure, were studied. The glass transition temperature (Tg), melting point temperature (Tm), and melting enthalpy (ΔHm) of the related polymers were obtained by use of differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The results are: Tg = 103.4–104.5°C, Tm = 291.5–304.7°C, and ΔHm = 104.4–115.4 J/g. Thermal properties such as thermal decomposition temperature and decomposition kinetics were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis under nitrogen. The initial and maximum rate temperatures of degradation were found to be 401.5–411.7°C and 437–477°C, respectively. The parameters of thermal decomposition kinetics of PPSAs were worked out to be: activation energy of degradation was 135 to 148 kJ/mol and the 60-s half-life temperature was 360 to 371°C. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
