The hydrogen bonding and miscibility behaviors of poly(styrene‐co‐methacrylic acid) (PSMA20) containing 20% of methacrylic acid with copolymers of poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylpyridine) (PS4VP) containing 5, 15, 30, 40, and 50%, respectively, of 4‐vinylpyridine were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It was shown that all the blends have a single glass transition over the entire composition range. The obtained Tgs of PSMA20/PS4VP blends containing an excess amount of PS4VP, above 15% of 4VP in the copolymer, were found to be significantly higher than those observed for each individual component of the mixture, indicating that these blends are able to form interpolymer complexes. The FTIR study reveals presence of intermolecular hydrogen‐bonding interaction between vinylpyridine nitrogen atom and the hydroxyl of MMA group and intensifies when the amount of 4VP is increased in PS4VP copolymers. A new band characterizing these interactions at 1724 cm−1 was observed. In addition, the quantitative FTIR study carried out for PSMA20/PS4VP blends was also performed for the methacrylic acid and 4‐vinylpyridine functional groups. The TGA study confirmed that the thermal stability of these blends was clearly improved. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2011  相似文献

The objective of this work was to study the miscibility and phase‐separation temperatures of poly(styrene‐co‐maleic anhydride) (SMA)/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) and SMA/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends with differential scanning calorimetry and small‐angle light scattering techniques. We focused on the effect of SMA partial imidization with aniline on the miscibility and phase‐separation temperatures of these blends. The SMA imidization reaction led to a partially imidized styrene N‐phenyl succinimide copolymer (SMI) with a degree of conversion of 49% and a decomposition temperature higher than that of SMA by about 20°C. We observed that both SMI/PVME and SMI/PMMA blends had lower critical solution temperature behavior. The imidization of SMA increased the phase‐separation temperature of the SMA/PVME blend and decreased that of the SMA/PMMA blend. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

A high‐performance difunctional epoxy resin, 4‐(4‐hydroxyphenoxy)phenol diglycidyl ether (DHPOP), was synthesized by a two‐step method. The curing behavior of DHPOP was investigated by nonisothermal differential scanning calorimetry method and the curing kinetics results revealed that the introduction of ether linkage could improve the activity of epoxy groups, leading to a lower curing temperature and apparent activation energy compared with that of the commercial bisphenol‐A diglycidyl ether (DGEBA). A series of copolymers were then prepared by varying the mass ratio of DHPOP and DGEBA, which were cured with 4,4′‐diaminodiphenyl methane. The effect of DHPOP contents on thermal and mechanical properties and fracture morphology was studied. As expected, with the increase of DHPOP in the network, the impact strength and char yield were significantly enhanced, while the glass transition temperature (Tg) remained unchanged because of the increase of crosslink density. The excellent toughness endows the DHPOP with the promising potential for the application as high‐performance resin matrix. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The miscibility of poly(n‐butyl methacrylate‐co‐methacrylic acid) containing 18 mol % methacrylic acid (BMAM‐18) and poly(styrene‐coN,N‐dimethyl acrylamide) containing 17 mol % N,N‐dimethyl acrylamide (SAD‐17) was investigated with viscometry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The DSC analysis showed a single glass‐transition temperature for all the blends, indicating that these copolymers were miscible over the entire composition range. The glass‐transition temperatures of these blends were higher than those calculated with the additivity rule. This was characteristic of the presence of specific interactions. The interactions between BMAM‐18 and the tertiary amide of SAD‐17 were studied with FTIR spectroscopy, which revealed that hydrogen‐bonding interactions occurred between the hydroxyl groups of BMAM‐18 and the carbonyl amide of SAD‐17. A new band characterizing these interactions appeared around 1613 cm?1. The quantitative results showed that the fraction of the associated amide increased with an increase in the amount of the acidic BMAM‐18 copolymer. Although BMAM‐18 and SAD‐17 led to homogeneous solutions in butan‐2‐one, as the concentration of N,N‐dimethyl acrylamide increased to 32 mol % [as within the poly(styrene‐coN,N‐dimethyl acrylamide) containing 32 mol % N,N‐dimethyl acrylamide], complexation occurred when this latter compound was mixed with BMAM‐18 in butan‐2‐one. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The influence of functional end groups on the thermal stability of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in nitrogen‐ and oxygen‐enriched atmospheres has been investigated in this article using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). Functional end groups of PLA were modified by succinic anhydride and l ‐cysteine by the addition–elimination reaction. PLA was synthesized by azeotropic condensation of l ‐lactic acid in xylene and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance. The values of the activation energies determined by TGA in nitrogen and oxygen atmospheres revealed that the character of functional end groups has remarkable influence on the thermal stability of PLA. Moreover, DMA confirmed the strong influence of functional end groups of PLA on polymer chains motion. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2014 , 131, 41105.  相似文献

1,6‐hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were copolymerized in different weight ratios using UV light induced photo‐polymerization to give poly(HDDA‐co‐MMA). Differential scanning calorimetry shows that copolymer was formed. The thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric studies with different heating rates were carried out on these copolymers to understand the nature of degradation and to determine its kinetics. Different kinetic models were adopted to evaluate various parameters like the activation energy, the order, and the frequency factor. These analyses are important to study the binder removal from 3D‐shaped ceramic objects made by techniques like Solid free form fabrication. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An important strategy used in the polymer industry in recent years is blending two bio‐based polymers to attain desirable properties similar to traditional thermoplastics, thus increasing the application potential for bio‐based and bio‐degradable polymers. Miscibility of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co‐3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) with poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLA) were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Three different grades of commercially available PLAs and one type of PHBV were blended in different ratios of 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, and 80/20 (PHBV/PLA) using a micro‐compounder at 175°C. The DSC and TGA analysis showed the blends were immiscible due to different stereo configuration of PLA polymer and two distinct melting temperatures. However, some compatibility between PHBV and PLA polymers was observed due to decreases in PLA's glass transition temperatures. Additionally, the blends do not show clear separation by SEM analysis, as observed in the thermal analysis. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2012  相似文献

Poly(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene oxide) (PPO) is a chemically resistant polymer and, therefore, an attractive material for the formation of membranes. However, membranes of unmodified PPO prepared by an immersion precipitation possess very low hydraulic permeabilities at the filtration processes. The membranes with higher hydraulic permeabilities can be prepared from sulfonated PPO and/or from blends of unsulfonated PPO and sulfonated PPO. In conclusion, the mechanism of the formation of membranes from blends of unsulfonated PPO and sulfonated PPO is suggested. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 73: 161–167, 1999  相似文献

The complexation behavior between poly(styrene‐co‐methacrylic acid) of different compositions (SMA‐12 or SMA‐29) and poly(styrene‐co‐4‐vinylpyridine) (S4VP‐6 or S4VP‐15) was studied by viscometry and differential scanning calorimetry using tetrahydrofuran (THF) and butan‐2‐one as solvents. This complexation is attributed to the presence of strong intermolecular interactions between the different polymer chains by hydrogen bonding. A single glass‐transition temperature, intermediate between those of the two pure copolymers SMA‐29 and S4VP‐15, was obtained with each composition of the mixture when THF or butan‐2‐one is used as a common solvent. The obtained results showed that the formation of such complexes depends strongly on the nature of the solvent and the contents of the interacting species. The complex formation is inhibited in THF because of the important ability of this latter to interact with the SMA. A quantitative analysis of the interactions between the constituents of these blends was carried out by FTIR spectroscopy. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 806–811, 2005  相似文献

The free‐radical copolymerization of water‐soluble poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) was carried out with a feed monomer ratio of 75:25 mol %, and the total monomer concentration was 2.67M. The synthesis of the copolymer was carried out in dioxane at 70°C with benzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The copolymer composition was obtained with elemental analysis and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The water‐soluble polymer was characterized with elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, 1H‐ and 13C‐NMR spectroscopy, and thermal analysis. Additionally, viscosimetric measurements of the copolymer were performed. The thermal behavior of the copolymer and its complexes were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry techniques under a nitrogen atmosphere. The copolymer showed high thermal stability and a glass transition in the DSC curves. The separation of various metal ions by the water‐soluble poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) reagent in the aqueous phase with liquid‐phase polymer‐based retention was investigated. The method was based on the retention of inorganic ions by this polymer in a membrane filtration cell and subsequent separation of low‐molar‐mass species from the polymer/metal‐ion complex formed. Poly(1‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone‐co‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate) could bind metal ions such as Cr(III), Co(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Cd(II), and Fe(III) in aqueous solutions at pHs 3, 5, and 7. The retention percentage for all the metal ions in the polymer was increased at pH 7, at which the maximum retention capacity could be observed. The interaction of inorganic ions with the hydrophilic polymer was determined as a function of the pH and filtration factor. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(ethylene‐co‐vinyl acetate) (EVA)/magnetite (Fe3O4) nanocomposite was prepared with different loading of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The mixing and compounding were carried out on a two‐roll mixing mill and the sheets were prepared in a compression‐molding machine. The effect of loading of nanoparticles in EVA was investigated thoroughly by different characterization technique such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), limiting oxygen index (LOI), and technological properties. TEM analysis showed the uniform dispersion of filler in the polymer matrix and the dispersion of filler decreased with increase in filler content. XRD of the nanocomposite revealed the more ordered structure of the polymer chain. An appreciable increase in glass transition temperature was observed owing to the restricted mobility of Fe3O4‐filled EVA nanocomposite. TGA and flame resistance studies indicated that the composites attain better thermal and flame resistance than EVA owing to the interaction of filler and polymer segments. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tear resistance, and modulus were increased for composites up to 7 phr of filler, which is presumably owing to aggregation of Fe3O4 nanoparticle at higher loading. The presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the polymer matrix reduced the elongation at break and impact strength while improved hardness of the composite than unfilled EVA. The change in technological properties had been correlated with the variation of polymer–filler interaction estimated from the swelling behavior. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. To determine the degree of compatibility between poly(lactic acid) and different biomaterials (fibers), poly(lactic acid) was compounded with sugar beet pulp and apple fibers. The fibers were added in 85 : 15 and 70 : 30 poly(lactic acid)/fiber ratios. The composites were blended by extrusion followed by injection molding. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis were used to analyze the extruded and extruded/injection‐molded composites. After melting in sealed differential scanning calorimetry pans, the composites were cooled through immersion in liquid nitrogen and aged (stored) at room temperature for 0, 7, 15, and 30 days. After storage, the samples were heated from 25 to 180°C at 10°C/min. The neat poly(lactic acid) showed a glass‐transition transition at 59°C with a change in heat capacity (ΔCp) value of 0.464. The glass transition was followed by crystallization and melting transitions. The enthalpic relaxation of the poly(lactic acid) and composites steadily increased as a function of the storage time. Although the presence of fibers had little effect on the enthalpic relaxation, injection molding reduced the enthalpic relaxation. The crystallinity percentage of the unprocessed neat poly(lactic acid) dropped by 95% after extrusion and by 80% for the extruded/injection‐molded composites. The degradation was performed in air and nitrogen environments. The degradation activation energy of neat poly(lactic acid) exhibited a significant drop in the nitrogen environment, although it increased in air. This meant that the poly(lactic acid) was more resistant to degradation in the presence of oxygen. Overall, injection molding appeared to reduce the activation energy for all the composites. Sugar beet pulp significantly reduced the activation energy in a nitrogen environment. In an air environment, both sugar beet pulp and apple fibers increased the activation energy. The enzymatic degradation of the composites showed a higher degradation rate for the extruded samples versus the extruded/injection‐molded composites, whereas the apple composites exhibited higher weight loss. The thermogravimetric analysis data showed that the degradation of unprocessed and extruded neat poly(lactic acid) followed a one‐step mechanism, whereas extruded/injection‐molded composites showed two‐step degradation. A higher fiber content resulted in up to three‐step degradation mechanisms. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2008  相似文献

Poly(styrene‐co‐methacrylic acid) containing 29 mol % of methacrylic acid (SMA‐29) and poly(isobutyl methacrylate‐co‐4‐vinylpyridine) containing 20 mol % of 4‐vinylpyridine (IBM4VP‐20) were synthesized, characterized, and used to elaborate binary and ternary nanocomposites of different ratios with a 3% by weight hexadecylammonium‐modified bentonite from Maghnia (Algeria) by casting method from tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions. The morphology and the thermal behavior of these binary and ternary elaborated nanocomposites were investigated by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, FTIR spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetry. Polymer nanocomposites and nanoblends of different morphologies were obtained. The effect of the organoclay and its dispersion within the blend matrix on the phase behavior of the miscible SMA29/IBM4VP20 blends is discussed. The obtained results showed that increasing the amount of SMA29 in the IBM4VP20/SMA29 blend leads to near exfoliated nanostructure with significantly improved thermal stability. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A modified clay was used to prepare poly(L ‐lactic acid)/clay nanocomposite dispersions. X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy experiments revealed that poly(L ‐lactic acid) was able to intercalate the clay galleries. IR spectra of the poly(L ‐lactic acid)/clay nanocomposites showed the presence of interactions between the exfoliated clay platelets and the poly(L ‐lactic acid). Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were performed to study the thermal behavior of the prepared composites. The properties of the poly(L ‐lactic acid)/clay nanocomposites were also examined as functions of the organoclay content. The exfoliated organoclay layers acted as nucleating agents, and as the organoclay content increased, the crystallization temperature increased. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The thermal properties and mechanical properties are the key factors of phase‐change microcapsules (microPCMs) in energy‐storage applications. In this study, microPCMs based on an n‐octadecane (C18) core and a melamine–urea–formaldehyde (MUF) shell supplemented with O2‐plasma‐modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized through in situ polymerization. Meanwhile, two different addition methods, the addition of modified CNTs into the emulsion system or into the polymer system, were compared and examined. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that the microPCMs were spherical and had a broadened size distribution. Fourier transform infrared testing demonstrated that the modified CNTs did not affect C18 coated by MUF resin. The results indicate that the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the microPCMs were remarkably improved by the addition of a moderate amount of modified CNTs, but the heat enthalpy and encapsulated efficiency decreased slightly. Moreover, the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of microPCMs modified with CNTs directly added to the polymer system were superior to those with CNTs added to emulsion system. In particular, when 0.2 g of modified CNTs were added to the polymer system, the thermal conductivity of the microPCMs was improved by 225%, and the breakage rates of the microPCMs at 4000 rpm for 5, 10, and 20 min decreased by 74, 72, and 60%, respectively, compared with that of the microPCMs without modified CNTs. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis of two low molecular weight linear unsaturated oligoester precursors, poly(propylene fumarate‐co‐sebacate) (PPFS) and poly(ethylene fumarate‐co‐sebacate) (PEFS), are described. PPFS, PEFS, and poly(ethylene glycol) are then used to prepare poly(propylene fumarate‐co‐sebacate)‐co‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PPFS‐co‐PEG) and poly(ethylene fumarate‐co‐sebacate)‐co‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PEFS‐co‐PEG) block copolymers. The products thus obtained are investigated in terms of the molecular weight, composition, structure, thermal properties, and solubility behavior. A number of design parameters including the molecular weights of PPFS, PEFS, and PEG, the reaction time in the polymer synthesis, and the weight ratio of PEG to PPFS or to PEFS are varied to assess their effects on the product yield and properties. The hydrolytic degradation of PPFS‐co‐PEG and PEFS‐co‐PEG in an isotonic buffer (pH 7.4, 37°C) is investigated, and it is found that the fumarate ester bond cleaves faster than does the sebacate ester bond. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystallization kinetics and spherulitic morphology of six‐armed poly(L‐lactic acid) (6a‐PLLA)/poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co?3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) crystalline/crystalline partially miscible blends were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy in this study. Avrami analysis was used to describe the isothermal crystallization process of the neat polymers and their blends. The results suggest that blending had a complex influence on the crystallization rate of the two components during the isothermal crystallization process. Also, the crystallization mechanism of these blends was different from that of the neat polymers. The melting behavior of these blends was also studied after crystallization at various crystallization temperatures. The crystallization of PHBV at 125°C was difficult, so no melting peaks were found. However, it was interesting to find a weak melting peak, which arose from the PHBV component for the 20/80 6a‐PLLA/PHBV blend after crystallization at 125°C, and it is discussed in detail. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To further improve the processability of water plasticized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), boric acid (BA), which can rapidly form reversible crosslinked structure with the hydroxyl groups of PVA, was adopted as a modifier, and the water states, thermal performance, and rheological properties of modified PVA were investigated. The results showed that ascribing to the formation of the crosslinked structure between PVA and BA, the content of nonfreezing water in system increased, indicating that the bondage of PVA matrix on water enhanced, thus retarding the tempestuous evaporation of water in system during melt process and making more water remained in system to play the role of plasticizer. Meanwhile, this crosslinked structure shielded part hydroxyl groups in PVA chains, leading to the further weakening of the self‐hydrogen bonding of PVA, and guaranteeing a lower melting point and higher decomposition temperature, thus obtaining a quite wide thermal processing window, i.e., ≥179°C. The melt viscosity of BA modified PVA slightly increased, but still satisfied the requirements for thermal processing, thus reinforcing the flow stability of the melt at high shearing rate. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The present investigation has been achieved in accordance with the Diels–Alder reaction (1,4 cycloaddition) to produce a new halogenated bicyclic adduct. ortho‐Bromoallylbenzoate is a new dienophile that was prepared in a pure form, and its structure was confirmed. The Diels–Alder syntheses of hexachlorocyclopentadiene and the new dienophile were studied to determine the optimum condensation reaction conditions under a temperature range of 90–160°C, reaction times of 1–8 h, and molar diene/dienophile ratios from 1:1 to 5:1 as a consequence. The optimum conditions reached were a temperature of 140°C, an initial diene/dienophile molar ratio of 3:1, and a duration time of 6 h. The maximum stoichometric yield under these optimum conditions (82.5%) was obtained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 89: 2331–2338, 2003  相似文献

Miscibility and morphology of poly(ethylene 2,6‐naphthalate)/poly(pentamethylene terephthalate)/poly(ether imide) (PEN/PPT/PEI) blends were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical microscopy (OM), proton nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (1H‐NMR), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). OM and DSC results from ternary blends revealed the immiscibility of PEN/PPT/PEI blends, but ternary blends of all compositions were phase‐homogeneous following heat treatment at 300°C for over 60 min. Annealing samples at 300°C yielded an amorphous blend with a clear and single Tg at the final state. Experimental data from 1H‐NMR revealed that PEN/PPT copolymers (ENPT) were formed by the so‐called transesterification. The effect of transesterification on glass transition and crystallization was discussed in detail. The sequence structures of the copolyester were identified by triad analysis, which showed that the mean sequence lengths became shorter and the randomness increased with heating time. The results reveal that a random copolymer improved the miscibility of the ternary blends, in which, the length of the homo segments in the polymer chain decreased and the crystal formation was disturbed because of the irregularity of the structure, as the exchange reaction proceeded. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
