This study describes the facile preparation of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/polyethersulfone (PES) composite membranes by interfacial reaction technique, aiming at acquiring the improved structural and operational stability of the resulting membranes. The effect of interfacial crosslinking agent and hydrophilicity of support layer on the interfacial adhesive strength and pervaporation performance of composite membranes were investigated. The optimal recipe for PVA/PES composite membrane preparation was as follows: PES support layer was treated with 0.1 wt.% borax aqueous solution, fully dried and then immersed into 2 wt.% PVA aqueous solution. The resulting PVA active layer was 1–1.5 μm thick after twice dip-coating. The as-prepared PVA/PES composite membrane exhibited high separation factor of over 438, high permeation flux of 427 g m−2 h−1 for 80 wt.% EG in the feed at 70 °C and desirable structural stability. It could be derived that adoption of interfacial reaction would be an effective method for preparing the composite membranes suitable for large-scale dehydration of ethylene glycol/water mixture.  相似文献

Chitosan/PTFE composite membranes were prepared from casting a γ-(glycidyloxypropyl)trimethoxysilane (GPTMS)-containing chitosan solution on poly(styrene sulfuric acid) grafted expended poly(tetrafluoroethylene) film surface. The adhesion between the chitosan skin layer and the PTFE substrate was pretty good to warrant the high performance of chitosan/PTFE composite membranes using in pervaporation dehydration processes on isopropanol. The chitosan/PTFE membrane exhibited a permeation flux of 1730 g/m2 h and a separation factor of 775 at 70 °C on pervaporation dehydration of a 70 wt% isopropanol aqueous solution. The membrane also survived after a long-term operation test in 45 days.  相似文献

Cardo polyetherketone (PEK-C) composite membranes were prepared by casting glutaraldehyde (GA) cross-linked sulfonated cardo polyetherketone (SPEK-C) or silicotungstic acid (STA) filled SPEK-C and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blending onto a PEK-C substrate. The compatibility between the active layer and PEK-C substrate is improved by immersing the PEK-C substrate in a GA cross-linked sodium alginate (NaAlg) solution and using water–dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a co-solvent for preparing the STA-PVA-SPEK-C/GA active layer. The pervaporation (PV) dehydration of acetic acid shows that permeation flux decreased and separation factor increased with increasing GA content in the homogeneous membranes. The permeation flux achieved a minimum and the separation factor a maximum when the GA content increased to a certain amount. Thereafter the permeation flux increased and the separation factor decreased with further increasing the GA content. The PV performance of the composite membranes is superior to that of the homogeneous membranes when the feed water content is below 25 wt%. The permeation activation energy of the composite membranes is lower than that of the homogeneous membranes in the PV dehydration of 10 wt% water in acetic acid. The STA-PVA-SPEK-C-GA/PEK-C composite membrane using water–DMSO as co-solvent has an excellent separation performance with a flux of 592 g m−2 h−1 and a separation factor of 91.2 at a feed water content of 10 wt% at 50 °C.  相似文献

Sulfonated cardo polyetherketone (SPEK-C) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend membranes were prepared by solution casting method and used in pervaporation (PV) dehydration of acetic acid. The membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle meter. The results show that thermal crosslinking occurred to the membrane under high temperature annealing. The effective d-spacing (inter-segmental spacing) decreased with PVA content decreasing. The hydrophilicity of the blend membrane increased with SPEK-C content increasing. Swelling and sorption experiments show that the swelling degree of the blend membrane increased, however both the sorption and diffusion selectivities decreased with increasing PVA content. The diffusion selectivity is higher than the sorption selectivity. This suggests that PV dehydration of acetic acid is dominated by the diffusion process. The pervaporation separation index (PSI) of the membrane increases with increasing PVA content and arrives at a maximum when the SPEK-C/PVA ratio is 3/2, then decreases with further addition of PVA. The membrane has an encouraging separation performance with a flux of 492 g m−2 h−1 and separation factor of 59.3 at 50 °C at the feed water content 10 wt%.  相似文献

Novel nanocomposite polymeric membranes containing nanosized (30–100 nm) polyaniline (PANI) particles dispersed in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were prepared and used in the pervaporation separation of water–isopropanol feed mixtures ranging from 10 to 50 mass% of water at 30 °C. Of the three nanocomposite membranes prepared, the membrane containing 40:60 surface atomic concentration ratio of PANI:PVA produced the highest selectivity of 564 compared to a value of 77 observed for the plain PVA membrane. Flux of the nanocomposite membranes was lower than those observed for the plain PVA membrane, but selectivity improved considerably. Membranes were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The highest selectivity with the lowest flux was observed for 10 mass% water containing feed mixture. Flux increased with increasing amount of water in the feed, but selectivity decreased considerably. These results were attributed to the acid-doped PANI particles in the PVA membrane as a result of change in the micromorphology of the nanocomposite membranes. In addition, molar mass between cross-links and fractional free volume of the membranes are responsible for the varying membrane performance. Temperature effect on permeability was investigated for 10 mass% water containing feed with the membrane containing higher concentration of PANI particles, the presence of which could be responsible for varied effect of water permeation through the membrane. Membranes of this study could remove as much as 98% of water from the feed.  相似文献

High ionic conducting solid polymer electrolyte membranes (SPEM) had been successfully prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The solution casting method yielded highly hydrophilic membranes with uniform structure that were suitable for electrochemical applications. The room temperature ionic conductivity of the alkaline PVA/PAA polymer electrolyte membranes was in the range of 0.142–0.301 S cm−1 depending on the composition. The cyclic voltammetry analysis was carried out using Zn|SPEM|Zn and Al|SPEM|Al cells. The analysis results revealed the excellent electrochemical stability of these newly developed alkaline solid PVA/PAA polymer electrolyte membranes. Metal-air fuel cells were also prepared from the alkaline solid PVA/PAA polymer electrolyte membranes. The electrochemical cell performance was evaluated based on Zn-air and Al-air cells at C/10 and C/5 discharge rates. The experimental results exhibited high percent of utilization for metal powders at room temperature. It was up to 90% for Zn-air cell when assembled with PVA:PAA = 10:7.5 polymer electrolyte membrane and discharged at C/10 rate. The power density could be as high as 50 mW cm−2 at room temperature. However, the cell percent utilization was reduced to 73% with the same composition electrolyte membrane when C/5 discharge rate was tested.  相似文献

Novel temperature-sensitive membranes have been synthesized by grafting poly(N-isopropyacrylamide) (poly(NIPAAm)) onto a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) backbone using hydrogen peroxide-ferrous ion as initiator. Due to the grafting of poly(NIPAAm), the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance and the polarity of the pendent groups within the membranes are modified. Significant temperature sensitivity of the grafted membranes is observed close to the LCST of linear poly(NIPAAm) in the pervaporation processes for ethanol-water separation. Both the pervaporation and sorption selectivities for water show a maximum value in the vicinity of 30–32°C for an ethanol content of 75 and 80%. The temperature sensitivity of the grafted membranes also depends on the ethanol concentration. The maxima of pervaporation and sorption selectivities disappear when the ethanol content is lower than 75% because the much larger degree of swelling reduces the size screening effect of the membranes.  相似文献

Immobilization of cellulase in nanofibrous PVA membranes by electrospinning   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Electrospinning is a nanofiber-forming process by which either polymer solution or melt is charged to high voltages. With high specific surface area and porous structure, electrospun fibrous membranes are excellent candidates for immobilization of enzymes. In this paper, immobilization of cellulase in nanofibrous poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes was studied by electrospinning. PVA and cellulase were dissolved together in an acetic acid buffer (pH 4.6) and electrospun into nanofibers with diameter of around 200 nm. The nanofibrous membranes were crosslinked by glutaraldehyde vapor and examined catalytic efficiency for biotransformations. The activity of immobilized cellulase in PVA nanofibers was over 65% of that of the free enzyme. Nanofibers were superior to casting films from the same solution for immobilization of cellulase. The activity of immobilized cellulase descended with ascending in enzyme loading efficiency and crosslinking time, which retained 36% its initial activity after six cycles of reuse.  相似文献

Pervaporation (PV) separation of water + isopropanol and water + 1,4-dioxane mixtures has been attempted using the blend membranes of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with 5 wt.% of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). These results have been compared with the plain PVA membrane. Both plain PVA and PVA/PMMA blend membranes have been crosslinked with glutaraldehyde in an acidic medium. The membranes were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry and universal testing machine. Pervaporation separation experiments have been performed at 30 °C for 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 wt.% of feed water mixtures containing isopropanol as well as 1,4-dioxane. PVA/PMMA blend membrane has shown a selectivity of 400 for 10 wt.% of water in water + isopropanol feed, while for water + 1,4-dioxane feed mixture, membrane selectivity to water was 104 at 30 °C. For both the feed mixtures, selectivity for the blend membrane was higher than that observed for plain PVA membrane, but flux of the blend membrane was lower than that observed for the plain PVA membrane. Membranes of this study are able to remove as much as 98 wt.% of water from the feed mixtures of water + isopropanol, while 92 wt.% of water was removed from water + 1,4-dioxane feed mixtures at 30 °C. Flux of water increased for both the feed mixtures, while the selectivity decreased at higher feed water concentrations. The same trends were observed at 40 and 50 °C for 10, 15 and 20 wt.% of water mixtures containing isopropanol as well as 1,4-dioxane feed mixtures, which also covered their azeotropic composition ranges. Membrane performance was studied by calculating flux (Jp), selectivity (), pervaporation separation index (PSI) and enrichment factor (β). Permeation flux followed the Arrhenius trend over the range of temperatures investigated. It was found that by introducing a hydrophobic PMMA polymer into a hydrophilic PVA, the selectivity increased dramatically, while flux decreased compared to plain PVA, due to a loss in PVA chain relaxation.  相似文献

A novel thin film composite membrane with superior propylene dehumidification performance was prepared by coating a high hydrophilic organophosphorus acid ethylene diamine tetra(methylene phosphonic acid) (EDTMPA) doped poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) on polysulfone (PS) hollow fiber membranes. Experimental studies and molecular dynamics simulations were combined to probe the existing states and the transport mechanism of water in the membranes. Water vapor sorption experiments revealed that the enhanced dehumidification performance was governed by the diffusion process. Water states and water distribution were investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. At low EDTMPA content (<10 wt.%), states of the water were not obviously changed and the increase of water diffusion coefficient was mainly attributed to enlarged free volume of the membrane. At high EDTMPA content (10–30 wt.%), the increase in the water diffusion coefficient mainly arose from the variations in the water states. Strong interaction between PVA and EDTMPA reduced the amount of water that bounded to the PVA and increased the proportion of free water. The diffusion coefficients of water increased with increasing proportion of free water, since the mobility of free water was higher than that of bound water. The permeance of water reached 997.7 GPU for the PVA–EDTMPA/PS membrane with a 20 wt.% EDTMPA content when the proportion of free water was the highest, and the separation factor increased to infinity.  相似文献

Composite membranes based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and graphene oxide (GO) were prepared by solution-casting method to be used as proton exchange membranes (PEMs) in fuel cell (FC) applications. Bisulfonation was employed as a strategy to enhance the proton conductivity of these membranes. First, a direct sulfonation of the polymer matrix was accomplished by intra-sulfonation of the polymer matrix with propane sultone, followed by the inter-sulfonation of the polymer chains using sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) as a crosslinking agent. Furthermore, the addition of graphene oxide (GO) as inorganic filler was also evaluated to enhance the proton-conducting of the composite membranes. These membranes were fully characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and tensile tests. Besides, the proton conductivity of these membranes in a fully hydrated state was also analyzed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The effect of the intra- and inter-sulfonation of the polymer matrix on the structural, morphological, thermal and mechanical properties of the membranes were determined. Increasing the density of sulfonic acid groups in the membranes resulted in a trade-off between a better proton conductivity (improving from 0.26 to 1.00 mS/cm) and a decreased thermal and mechanical stability. In contrast, the incorporation of GO nanoparticles into the polymer matrix improved the thermal and mechanical stability of both bisulfonated composite membranes. The proton conductivity appreciably increased by the combination of bisulfonation and introduction of GO nanoparticles into the polymer matrix. The sPVA/30SSA/GO composite membrane exhibited a proton conductivity of 1.95 mS/cm at 25 °C. The combination of the GO nanoparticles with the chemical bisulfonation approach of PVA allows thus assembling promising proton exchange membrane candidates for fuel cell applications.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) were prepared by a solution method for the pervaporation separation of acetic acid-water mixtures. In the solution method, dry PVA films were crosslinked by immersion for 2 days at 40°C in reaction solutions which contained different contents of GA, acetone and a catalyst, HCl. In order to fabricate the crosslinked PVA membranes which were stable in aqueous solutions, acetone was used as reaction medium in stead of aqueous inorganic salt solutions which have been commonly used in reaction solution for PVA crosslinking reaction. The crosslinking reaction between the hydroxyl group of PVA and the aldehyde group of GA was characterized by IR spectroscopy. Swelling measurements were carried out in both water and acetic acid to investigate the swelling behavior of the membranes. The swelling behaviour of a membrane fabricated at different GA content in a reaction solution was dependent on crosslinking density and chemical functional groups created as a result of the reaction between PVA and GA, such as the acetal group, ether linkage and unreacted pendent aldehydes in PVA. The pervaporation separation of acetic acid-water mixtures was performed over a range of 70–90 wt% acetic acid in the feed at temperatures varying from 35 to 50°C to examine the separation performances of the PVA membranes. Permeation behaviour through the membranes was analyzed by using pervaporation activation energies which had been calculated from the Arrhenius plots of permeation rates.  相似文献

Novel nanocomposite membranes (PVA–CNT(CS)) were prepared by incorporating chitosan-wrapped multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWNT) into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). To further explore the intrinsic correlation between pervaporation performance and free volume characteristics, molecular dynamics simulation was first introduced to qualitatively analyze the contribution of carbon nanotube incorporation on improving free volume characteristics of the nanocomposite membranes. Secondly, the pervaporation performance of PVA–CNT(CS) nanocomposite membranes was investigated using permeation flux and separation factor as evaluating parameters. For benzene/cyclohexane (50/50, w/w) mixtures at 323 K, permeation flux and separation factor of pure PVA membrane are only 20.3 g/(m2 h) and 9.6, respectively, while the corresponding values of PVA–CNT(CS) (CNT content: 1%) nanocomposite membrane are 65.9 g/(m2 h) and 53.4. In order to explain the simultaneous increase of permeation flux and separation factor, as well as to check the calculation reliability of molecular dynamics simulation, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) analysis was employed.  相似文献

Homogeneous membranes were prepared by blending poly(acrylic acid) with poly(vinyl alcohol). These blend membranes were evaluated for the selective separation of alcohols from toluene by pervaporation. The flux and selectivity of the membranes were determined both as a function of the blend composition and of the feed mixture composition. The results showed that a polymer blending method could be very useful to develop new membranes with improved permselectivity. The pervaporation properties could be optimized by adjusting the blend composition. All the blend membranes tested showed a decrease in flux with increasing poly(vinyl alcohol) content for both methanol—toluene and ethanol—toluene liquid mixtures. The alcohols permeated preferentially through all tested blend membranes, and the selectivity values increased with increasing poly(vinyl alcohol) content. The pervaporation characteristics of the blend membranes were also strongly influenced by the feed mixture composition. The fluxes increased exponentially with increasing alcohol concentration in the feed mixtures, whereas the selectivities decreased for both liquid mixtures.  相似文献

In this research, an innovative Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) reverse osmosis (RO) membrane with exceptional attributes was fabricated. Graphene Oxide (GO) nanosheets and Pluronic F-127 were infused within crosslinked PVA to fabricate thin film mixed matrix membranes. The newly synthesized membranes were evaluated in terms of several parameters like surface roughness, hydrophilicity, salt rejection, water permeability, Chlorine tolerance and anti-biofouling property, utilizing a dead-end RO filtration unit. Typical characterization techniques were used to assess the characteristics of the membranes. These include SEM, AFM, contact angle measurements and mechanical strength analysis. The conjugation of Pluronic F-127 and GO enhanced the overall performance of the membranes. The modified membranes surfaces had less roughness and higher hydrophilicity in comparison with the unmodified ones. This research showed that membranes that contained 0.08 wt% and 0.1 wt% GO exhibited superior selectivity, mechanical strength, Chlorine tolerance and anti-biofouling property. The truly significant outcome to evolve from this investigation is that improvements have been accomplished while PVA was used as a stand-alone RO layer without the use of any substrate. This study showed that crosslinking of PVA and modifying it with proper fillers overcame the common PVA downsides, primarily swelling and rupture under exceptionally high pressure.  相似文献

Dense membranes were prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol)–poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVA–PVP) blends of different compositions and studied in swelling and dehydration by pervaporation of three organic solvents contaminated by 5 wt% water. The swelling generally increases with the PVP content. No extraction occurs in water–tetrahydrofuran (THF) and water–methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) mixtures. In ethanol containing 10 wt% of water, there is no extraction for blends containing less than 40 wt% PVP and an increasing extraction beyond this PVP content. The pervaporation flux of the water–ethanol mixture increases drastically at the same threshold whereas the water permselectivity falls to a low level. The values of the diffusion and permeability coefficients determined from transient permeation of the test water–ethanol mixture exhibit a similar sudden increase at the same PVP content threshold. This singular behavior of the blend membranes is interpreted by a strong affinity of the PVP component to ethanol, combined with a disappearance of crystallites in the blend at this threshold. Consequently the amorphous membrane can swell freely according to the affinity of the PVP component, leading to the observed behavior.  相似文献
