Cozumel Island in the Mexican Caribbean is inhabited by four carnivores, of which two, the Cozumel coati Nasua nelsoni and pygmy raccoon Procyon pygmaeus, are endemic species. The taxonomic status of a third carnivore, a dwarf gray fox Urocyon cinereoargenteus, is undetermined, but may deserve subspecific or species-level recognition. The fourth species, the kinkajou (Potos flavus), may be a recent introduction. We review the status of these carnivores, report our field observations and results of line transect and trapping efforts, discuss current threats to these taxa, and make recommendations for their conservation. A population density of 0.43 ± 0.27 coatis/km2, and a total island population size of 150 ± 95 individuals, was estimated from 386 km of line transects in 1994–1995. Intensive trapping efforts (1479 trap-nights) in 2001 at multiple localities were unsuccessful. Pygmy raccoons were observed in the mangrove and coastal wetland areas of the island and in 2001 we captured 11 individuals with the same sampling efforts as for coatis (8.8 raccoons/1000 trap-nights). The gray fox is also apparently very rare on the island. While a few observations of the animals have been made (1984, 1994 and 2001), no animals were seen along transects and none were trapped. The primary threats to the persistence of these taxa include introduced congeners, introduced predators, parasite and disease spill-over from exotic animals, habitat fragmentation, hunting and collection as pets, and hurricanes. We suggest that the Cozumel coati, pygmy raccoon, and the Cozumel population of the gray fox be considered as Critically Endangered according to the IUCN classification system. Current conservation actions focusing on Cozumel carnivores are extremely limited. We recommend eradication of introduced species, maintenance of habitat connectivity, ex situ conservation programs, explicit public policies on land-use and sustainable development, public awareness campaigns, and continuous scientific research and monitoring.  相似文献

Insular carnivores represent some of the most critically threatened species, but also the least known. To evaluate the conservation status of these species, thorough abundance estimates are urgently required. To better understand the population biology and conservation status of the endemic and threatened pygmy raccoon (Procyon pygmaeus) and dwarf coati (Nasua nelsoni) on Cozumel Island, Mexico, we worked island-wide to identify the presence of these species, and for the pygmy raccoon we studied several populations in depth during 2001–2003. On Cozumel, trapping was conducted for >6,600 trap nights in 19 locations of varying habitat types. A total of 96 pygmy raccoons (47 males and 49 females) and a single adult, male dwarf coati (N. nelsoni) were captured. Estimated total annual pygmy raccoon population size ± SE was 80 ± 26.1, resulting in an average density of 22 ± 5.1 raccoons/km2 for the three small sites where the animals persist. Based in part on the findings of this study that indicate these species have a restricted range and small population numbers, the IUCN recently changed the listing of the pygmy raccoon to Critically Endangered from Endangered. In contrast, the status of the dwarf coati (Endangered) has not been changed, although the taxon is in eminent danger of extinction and in need of immediate conservation action.  相似文献

Earlier studies yielded conflicting conclusions on the types of photoreceptors and photopigments found in the eyes of nocturnal prosimians. In this investigation a noninvasive electrophysiological procedure, electroretinogram flicker photometry, was employed to measure scotopic and photopic spectral sensitivity in the thick-tailed bushbaby (Otolemur crassicaudatus). The scotopic spectral sensitivity function of the bushbaby has a peak of about 507 nm. Under photopic test conditions, spectral sensitivity shifts toward the longer wavelengths. The results from a series of adaptation experiments indicate that the cones of the bushbaby retina contain only a single type of cone photopigment (peak sensitivity at about 545 nm). One implication from this result is that these animals do not have color vision. The photopigment arrangement of the bushbaby is different from that earlier found in diurnal and crepuscular prosimians but is similar to that of the owl monkey, the only nocturnal simian. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Much is known regarding the evolution of colour vision in nearly every vertebrate class, with the notable exception of the elasmobranchs. While multiple spectrally distinct cone types are found in some rays, sharks appear to possess only a single class of cone and, therefore, may be colour blind. In this study, the visual opsin genes of two wobbegong species, Orectolobus maculatus and Orectolobus ornatus, were isolated to verify the molecular basis of their monochromacy. In both species, only two opsin genes are present, RH1 (rod) and LWS (cone), which provide further evidence to support the concept that sharks possess only a single cone type. Examination of the coding sequences revealed substitutions that account for interspecific variation in the photopigment absorbance spectra, which may reflect the difference in visual ecology between these species.  相似文献

A recent examination of color vision in the ringtail lemur produced evidence that these prosimians could make color discriminations consistent with a diagnosis of trichromatic color vision. However, it was unclear if this behavior reflected the presence of three classes of cone or whether lemurs might be able to utilize signals from rods in conjunction with those from only two classes of cone. To resolve that issue, spectral sensitivity functions were obtained from ringtail lemurs (Lemur catta) and brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus) using a noninvasive electrophysiological procedure, electroretinographic flicker photometry. Results from experiments involving chromatic adaptation indicate that these lemurs routinely have only a single class of cone photopigment in the middle to long wavelengths (peak sensitivity of about 545 nm); they also have a short-wavelengthsensitive cone pigment with peak of about 437 nm. The earlier behavioral results are suggested to have resulted from the ability of lemurs to jointly utilize signals from rods and cones. The cone pigment complements of these lemurs differ distinctly from those seen among the anthropoids. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Summary Spectral sensitivity of the cichlid fishHaplochromis burtoni was measured under both scotopic and photopic conditions using a two-choice, food reward, operant conditioning paradigm. The highest absolute sensitivity (scotopic) is one quantum for every 5 to 50 rods measured at 475 nm (equivalent to a corneal irradiance of 3.8×106 Q s–1 cm–2). A P5001 photopigment apparently mediates spectral sensitivity over most of the visible spectrum; microspectrophotometric studies of rods had previously shown them to contain this photopigment. However, the scotopic behavioral action spectrum shows a sensitivity to short wavelength light higher than is consistent with a P5001 photopigment alone mediating the scotopic visual process. Determinations made under photopic conditions reveal a behavioral action spectrum broader than that found under scotopic conditions and consistent with mediation by interaction of the three known cone types in an opponent processing manner. The calculated photopic threshold value of approximately 104 Q s–1 (receptor)–1 is in agreement with results from other species and corresponds to a corneal irradiance of about 7×1010Q s–1cm–2.  相似文献

The visual receptors in the retina of the passeriform bird Leiothrix lutea were examined microspectro-photometrically. The rods had a maximum absorbance close to 500 nm. Four spectrally different classes of single cone were identified with typical combinations of photopigments and oil droplets: a long-wave sensitive cone with a photopigment P568 and a droplet with a cut-off wavelength at 564 nm, a middle-wave sensitive cone with a P499 and a droplet with a cut-off at 506 nm, a short-wave sensitive cone with a P454 and a droplet with maximum absorbance below 410nm and an ultraviolet sensitive cone with a P355 and a transparent droplet. Double cones possessed a P568 in both the principal and accessory members. A pale droplet with variable absorbance (maximal at about 420 nm) was associated with the principal member whereas the ellipsoid region of the accessory member contained only low concentrations of carotenoid. The effective spectral sensitivities of the different cone classes were calculated from the characteristic combinations of oil droplets and photopigments and corrected for the absorbance of the ocular media. Comparison of these results with the behavioural spectral sensitivity function of Leiothrix lutea suggests that the increment threshold photopic spectral sensitivity of this avian species is mediated by the 4 single cone classes modified by neural opponent mechanisms.Abbreviations LWS long wave sensitive - MWS middle wave sensitive - SWS short wave sensitive (cones)  相似文献

Summary The interrelationship between the diurnal cycle of membrane loss and synthesis of new rhabdom components remains a key element in forming a complete picture of the turnover of photopigment-containing membrane in the crayfish photoreceptor cell. In order to examine this aspect of the turnover process, the diurnal pattern of photopigment synthesis was examined using an in vitro incubation system for incorporation of3H-leucine into photoreceptor protein. The incorporation of3H-leucine into total protein and photopigment specifically was measured in photoreceptors isolated from incubated retinas. The results indicate that for both total protein and photopigment there is no significant variation in the rate of synthesis during the 12-12 light-dark cycle. These data combined with earlier data on diurnal membrane loss from the rhabdom suggest that light-stimulated rhabdom membrane loss is superimposed on a diurnally constant level of synthesis and assembly of new rhabdom constituents.Abbreviations dpm disintegration per minute - LRB lysosome related body - TCA trichloroacetic acid  相似文献

Spectral sensitivity functions of a passeriform bird, the Red-billed Leiothrix Leiothrix lutea (Timalidae) were determined in a behavioural test under different background illuminations.
1.  With photopic illumination the spectral sensitivity of Leiothrix lutea covered the measured range from 320 nm to 680 nm. Four peaks of spectral sensitivity were found: a UV (370 nm), a blue (460 nm), a green (530 nm) and a red (620 nm) sensitivity peak. The spectral sensitivity was highest in the UV and decreased (over the blue and the green peak) towards the red sensitivity peak. The 4 peaks of spectral sensitivity point to 4 underlying cone mechanisms under photopic illumination and thus to a probably tetrachromatic colour vision of Leiothrix lutea.
2.  With mesopic illumination the bird's spectral sensitivity covered the measured range from 320 nm to 680 nm. Neural interactions between cone and rod sensitivities are likely to determine this function. The increased overall sensitivity and a dominant sensitivity peak at 500 nm point to a typical rhodopsin as the likely rod photopigment.
3.  Different aspects of the biological significance of the high UV sensitivity are discussed.

Genetic diversity is crucial for conservation biology and for understanding evolutionary processes. Oceanic islands harbor a unique biota and high endemism, with populations frequently facing detrimental genetic processes (e.g. drift, bottlenecks). Human activities like habitat transformation further increase extinction risk of insular biota. Mammals comprise the most endangered group among insular fauna. Our aim was to evaluate the genetic and evolutionary patterns of two critically endangered dwarf carnivores from Cozumel Island, the pygmy raccoon (Procyon pygmaeus) and the dwarf coati (Nasua nelsoni), at both historical and contemporary evolutionary scales. We also reviewed their genetic relationships with their mainland counterparts (P. lotor, N. narica), not intended to describe their phylogeny but to ascertain their endemism. Our mitochondrial results support that both Cozumel carnivores are divergent from continental populations, strengthening their endemic status. Both species showed moderate levels of nuclear genetic diversity that were, as expected for island populations, lower in comparison with their mainland congeneric species; they also exhibited significantly low population sizes. We documented historical and contemporary bottleneck signals for P. pygmaeus, whereas N. nelsoni may be suffering the initial stages of a bottleneck not yet fully manifested. The pygmy raccoon is structured into two isolated genetic clusters likely due to interactions with humans on the north of the island, where most potential for disease transmission and health problems exist. We also add evidence about the introduction of the mainland species into the island, risking genetic introgression and hybridization. We discuss specific conservation measures that should include our genetic information, directed to the long-term viability of these endemic carnivores.

Ecology of wildlife rabies in Europe   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
  • 1 The number of wildlife rabies cases has increased in Europe in recent years. We review the epizootiology of wildlife rabies in Europe, paying special attention to recent changes to the situation of two important vector species: the red fox and the raccoon dog. Red fox Vulpes vulpes has been the main vector of rabies since 1945, but the number and proportion of raccoon dog Nyctereutes procyonoides cases has rapidly increased during the past few years, particularly in north‐eastern Europe.
  • 2 The transmission rate (average number of susceptible animals infected by each rabid animal) is critical for rabies spread and is partly determined by population density. Both raccoon dogs and foxes live in pairs. Foxes also live in family groups. Pairs and groups share their territories. Home range size usually correlates negatively with population density. Fox home ranges are 50–1500 ha, those of raccoon dogs 150–700 ha. The threshold value for rabies spread among foxes is estimated to be 0.63 individuals/km2. Although fox density in eastern and northern Europe may be lower than this, the pooled density of foxes and raccoon dogs exceeds the threshold density.
  • 3 Animal movements, especially dispersal of young, pose a risk for rabies spread. Although the likelihood of an epizootic is highest where fox and raccoon dog densities are highest, rabies may spread fastest where population densities are lower, because dispersal distances tend to correlate negatively with population density.
  • 4 Oral vaccinations have been more effective in rabies control than culling foxes. Where two vector species exist, vaccination should be conducted twice a year, because most raccoon dogs disperse in autumn but some foxes do not disperse before mid‐ or late winter.
  • 5 New rabies models, based on two vector species and their interaction, and which take into account the hibernation period of raccoon dogs, are needed for north‐eastern Europe.

The coati (Nasua nasua, Carnivora) is a medium‐sized mammal common in the Pantanal of Brazil. Unlike most mammals, coatis construct arboreal nests used for resting and reproduction. In this region, the coati is an important host of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. There are two possible routes through coatis can be infected by T. cruzi: the oral route or the vectorial route. However, the relative importance of each of these routes in the infection of coatis and its role in the sylvatic cycle of the parasite are unknown. Our objectives were to investigate: (i) whether coati nests were infested by triatomine bugs, (ii) what species were frequent in the nests, (iii) whether the triatomines in nests were infected by T. cruzi, and (iv) what were the food resources of these triatomines. Eight of the 24 nests sampled were infested with triatomines, a total of 37 specimens of at least two species (Rhodnius stali and Triatoma sordida). In one nest, R. stali and T. sordida co‐occurred and both fed on multiple resources, including coatis. This is the first report of triatomines occurring in arboreal nests of coatis. The co‐occurrence of two different genera of triatomine vectors and coatis within the limited space of the coati nests provide multiple opportunities for the exchange of the protozoan parasite through both the vectorial and oral transmission routes.  相似文献

Summary The amino acid compositions of the tryptic peptides of the following carnivore hemoglobin chains have been determined: gray fox (Urocyon cineroargenteus); raccoon (Procyon lotor); polar bear (Thalarctos maritimus); coati mundi (Nasua nasua) chain; coati mundi (Nasua narica) two chains; cat (Felis catus) chain; and lion (Panthera leo) chain. These provide a basis for future sequencing of these hemoglobins and construction of an evolutionary tree. The specific results are summarized in the following article (Stenzel and Brimhall, 1977).  相似文献

A PUZZLING characteristic of fundus reflectometry data is that cone photopigment regeneration occurs more rapidly after a brief full bleach than after a prolonged full bleach1,2. The hypothesis that the relative slowness of recovery from extended photolysis results from a reduction in the store of 11-cis retinal available for photopigment synthesis1 has been found unsatisfactory2. We present here an alternative explanation which allows physical interpretation and quantitative characterization of the observed dependence of recovery rate on illuminance history.  相似文献

Thermogenically elevated cone temperatures were measured in two Macrozamia cycad species that differ in their daily heating time. Mathematical models of the cones‘ thermo-physics were tested for their accuracy in predicting these cone temperatures and for comparison of the energetics of both species and the sexes within species. These models accurately predicted temperatures over ~8-h periods with average errors of: 0.46°C for Macrozamia lucida, pollinated by the thrips, Cycadothrips chadwicki, that moves during mid-day concurrent with cone heating; and 0.38°C for Macrozamia machinii, pollinated by the weevil, Tranes sp., that moves after sunset during cone heating. The combination of models and experiments revealed a thermogenic sexual dimorphism in both species. For M. lucida, the estimated female mass specific metabolisms, and their theoretically possible and actual temperature increases due to thermogenic metabolism were only 57, 67, and 76% of males. In addition, female thermogenic metabolisms began and peaked much earlier and lasted significantly longer than males (all differences >1 h), and female metabolic peaks preceded their temperature peaks by 65 vs. 46 min for males. The timing of almost all male cone metabolic peaks was optimized with respect to the diurnal ambient heating cycle so that cone temperatures achieved a maximum temperature gain, whereas most female metabolic peaks occurred much earlier than optimal. In M. machinii, thermogenic sexual dimorphism is much larger since its male peak metabolisms are larger, and its females’ peaks are much smaller compared to those of M. lucida. This study provides new information regarding the energetics of cycad cones that is relevant to understanding the interactions of the plant traits with their obligate pollinators’ behavior.  相似文献

The introduction of species outside their natural range is one of the major threats to biodiversity and has often been identified as a menace to agricultural production and human health. The raccoon is recognized as a globally invasive species. However, several populations in the Caribbean were long considered native and endemic species. Although previous genetic studies have shown that raccoons from the islands of the West Indies belong to the northern raccoon Procyon lotor, the history and origin of these introductions remain poorly known. In this study, we investigated the geographical origin of Caribbean raccoon populations using newly available molecular genetic data. We used haplotype network analyses of two mitochondrial markers, Cytochrome b and Control Region, with new sequences and those from GenBank. We also specifically investigated the origin of the endangered endemic Cozumel raccoon, Procyon pygmaeus, by re-analyzing data. Our results confirmed that all Caribbean raccoon populations belong to the northern raccoon. Bahamian populations originated from two different sources in Florida, and the Lesser Antilles raccoons seem to originate from northern regions of the native range. In addition, our results question the taxonomic status of the Cozumel raccoon, as currently available genetic data support a conspecific status with the northern raccoon. These results have important implications in the context of conservation and ecosystem management. Identifying origins of introduced populations and understanding the history of their introductions will facilitate studies on the impact of the raccoon on insular ecosystems.  相似文献

Electroretinographic recordings were made from hatchling loggerhead and leatherback sea turtle eyecup preparations to generate dark-adapted spectral sensitivity curves. Both species were maximally sensitive to wavelengths between 500 and 540 nm, with a secondary peak near 380 nm. The spectral sensitivity curve for leatherbacks was attenuated at the long wavelength end of the spectrum relative to that of the loggerheads. This difference may reflect adaptations to lighting available at the relatively shallow (loggerhead) versus deeper (leatherback) sites where each species forages. The broad spectrum of wavelengths detected by both species (near UV to yellow–orange) indicates that vision is likely mediated by more than one photopigment, potentially rendering these turtles capable of color vision.  相似文献

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is an East Asian Canid that has been introduced in Europe. Introduction of alien species is an increasing conservation issue. We examined the diet of a recently established raccoon dog population in Denmark by analysing stomach content in 249 carcasses collected in 2008–2016. Raccoon dog diet was compared to the diet of native badger (Meles meles) and red fox (Vulpes vulpes) in Denmark. The most common food for raccoon dogs were invertebrates (frequency of occurrence, FO 69%), small mammals (FO 68%), birds (FO 41%), fruits (FO 38%), amphibians (FO 36%) and carrions (FO 34%). The occurrence of invertebrates was highest during spring and summer, while fruits, cereals and carrions were eaten most often during autumn and winter. As expected, raccoon dog shared the major food categories with badger and red fox, but generally, it had a wider dietary niche. Overall, dietary overlap between raccoon dog and badger was 0.74 (Pianka index, Ojk). The dietary overlap with red fox was relatively high in all seasons, peaking in summer (Ojk 0.87) and dropping in winter (Ojk 0.79). Despite the dietary overlap between the alien racoon dog and native red fox and badger, the species may coexist due to partitioning of feeding habitats and/or because the red fox is limited by other factors, e.g. diseases and anthropogenic activities. The introduced raccoon dog seems to fit a dietary niche between badger and red foxes in human-dominated landscapes in north-western Europe.  相似文献

Morphological characteristics reflect geographical variation resulting from adaptation to varying environmental conditions. Carnivore species distributed over a wide geographical range generally have highly polymorphic morphological variation. The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) has a longitudinal distribution restricted to East Asia and the northern Indochina Peninsula. Its unique geographical range makes it an appropriate model to examine how morphological differences are influenced by geography. To demonstrate morphological evolution of Russian, Chinese, Korean and Japanese raccoon dogs predicted by geographical differences, we tested the island rule and Bergmann's rule. We compared craniodental variation among populations and examined morphological implications for intraspecific taxonomic status. Insular raccoon dogs possessed substantially smaller body size than those from the mainland. Moreover, different island effects among Japanese islands were demonstrated by markedly larger occipital condyle breath in the Hokkaido population. Larger skull size in Russian and Hokkaido raccoon dogs could be explained by Bergmann's rule. Based on previous chromosomal and molecular studies and results of our morphological analyses, we suggest Japanese raccoon dogs are a distinct species from the mainland N. procyonoides.  相似文献

To investigate whether the sensitivity to environmental temperature varies between nocturnal and diurnal species of tenebrionid beetle, the metabolic rates of three diurnal species (Onymacris plana Peringuey, Onymacris rugatipennis Haag and Physadesmia globosa Haag) and three nocturnal species (Epiphysa arenicola Penrith, Gonopus sp. and Stips sp.) of beetles from the Namib Desert are measured over a range of temperatures (15–40 °C) that are experienced by these beetles in their natural habitat. The diurnal species O. plana, O. rugatipennis and P. globosa exhibit temperature‐independent metabolic rates (mean Q10 = 1.2) within temperature ranges that are ecologically relevant for diurnal desert beetles (30–40 °C). Onymacris plana, in particular, has a 20–40 °C rate–temperature slope (0.007 log10 mL O2 h?1 g?1 °C?1; Q10 = 1.1) that is less than half that of the other five beetle species (0.022–0.063 log10 mL O2 h?1 g?1 °C?1; Q10 ranges from 1.3–1.9), suggesting that O. plana is more metabolically independent of temperature than the other nocturnal and diurnal tenebrionids being investigated. Animals with metabolic rates that are decoupled from body temperature (or ambient temperature) may have an ecological advantage that allows them to exploit thermal and spatial niches during extreme temperature conditions.  相似文献
