Hemingway’s Political Views in His First Period of Creation

Based on the influence of different relationship between general ideology and authorial ideology on Hemingway＇s works in the first period of his creation, the thesis aims to study the different reflection of his political interest from the perspective of ideology.     

On Ernest Hemingway＇s Views about Women

Emest Hermngway is famous for his ＂masculinity＂ style in his writing. Meanwhile, he also describes female characters and their strengths and reveals his own sensitivity to gender issues. His early exposure to women is from his upbringing dominatrix. His failure on marriage plays an important role on his works. In his mind, women are the combination of angel and evil. They act elegantly and attract men＇s heart, but sometimes they are changeable. Catherine Barkley is a typical angel except her suspect. Catherine Bourne is an evil though she is charming. Brett Ashley is attractive, but she can＇t love whom she loves. That is a society without choice. Women＇s feelings attach to men. They show their right to love, to change. Even to escape the cruel reality. At the same time they know they can＇ t cast the society. Hemingway pays more attention on women＇s feelings in his writing. On the one hand, he respects women＇s elegance, beauty and view on love. He wants to get love and care from them. On the other hand, he holds in awe on women. He assumes women are changeable, and is afraid of being hurt. Hemingway＇ s mind is full of conflicts, and his love, hatred, sympathy belong to not merely male, but also female. No matter she is angel or evil, he can＇t help himself and his readers falling in love with these women of extraordinary beauty.

Hemingway＇s inner world is not balanced. He had a strong will, and on the other hand, he is hurt severely. ＂Soldier＇s Home,＂ Hemingway employs a third person narrator which narrates the short story in a seemingly detached and indifferent narrative voice. However,further exploration of the narrator and narrative voice in the story demonstrates that,instead of being thoroughly detached,the narrator constantly penetrates into the protagonist＇s consciousness,merges with character＇s voice,and even betrays Hemingway＇s sympathies with his protagonist. This paper attempts to explore narrator and narrative voice used in this story which contribute a lot to the alienation theme of the story as well as the successful depiction and characterization of a young soldier who finds himself desperate,disillusioned and alienated after returning home from the First World.War.

Each character brings out a different side of the forest,however the forest also brings out a different side in each character.The forest reflects multi-dimension. The image of ＂woods＂ or ＂forest＂ in The Scarlet Letter manifests Horthorne＇s understanding and exploring of the human nature. The forest may stand for individual freedom,innocence,truth,danger and evil as well.
