The bis(beta-diketone) ligands 1,3-bis(3-phenyl-3-oxopropanoyl)benzene, H(2)L(1) and 1,3-bis(3-phenyl-3-oxopropanoyl) 5-ethoxy-benzene, H(2)L(2), have been prepared for the examination of dinuclear lanthanide complex formation and investigation of their properties as sensitizers for lanthanide luminescence. The ligands bear two conjugated diketonate binding sites linked by a 1,3-phenylene spacer. The ligands bind to lanthanide(III) or yttrium(III) ions to form neutral homodimetallic triple stranded complexes [M(2)L(1)(3)] where M = Eu, Nd, Sm, Y, Gd and [M(2)L(2)(3)], where M = Eu, Nd or anionic quadruple-stranded dinuclear lanthanide units, [Eu(2)L(1)(4)](2-). The crystal structure of the free ligand H(2)L(1) has been determined and shows a twisted arrangement of the two binding sites around the 1,3-phenylene spacer. The dinuclear complexes have been isolated and fully characterized. Detailed NMR investigations of the complexes confirm the formation of a single complex species, with high symmetry; the complexes show clear proton patterns with chemical shifts of a wide range due to the lanthanide paramagnetism. Addition of Pirkle's reagent to solutions of the complexes leads to splitting of the peaks, confirming the chiral nature of the complexes. Electrospray and MALDI mass spectrometry have been used to identify complex formulation and characteristic isotope patterns for the different lanthanide complexes have been obtained. The complexes have high molar absorption coefficients (around 13 x 10(4) M(-1)cm(-1)) and display strong visible (red or pink) or NIR luminescence upon irradiation at the ligand band around 350 nm, depending on the choice of the lanthanide. Emission quantum yield experiments have been performed and the luminescence signals of the dinuclear complexes have been found to be up to 11 times more intense than the luminescence signals of the mononuclear analogues. The emission quantum yields and the luminescence lifetimes are determined to be 5% and 220 micros for [Eu(2)L(1)(3)], 0.16% and 13 micros for [Sm(2)L(1)(3)], and 0.6% and 1.5 micros for [Nd(2)L(1)(3)]. The energy level of the ligand triplet state was determined from the 77 K spectrum of [Gd(2)L(1)(3)]. The bis-diketonate ligand is shown to be an efficient sensitizer, particularly for Sm and Nd. Photophysical studies of the europium complexes at room temperature and 77 K show the presence of a thermally activated deactivation pathway, which we attribute to ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). Quenching of the luminescence from this level seems to be operational for the Eu(III) complex but not for complexes of Sm(III) and Nd(III), which exhibit long lifetimes. The quadruple-stranded europium complex has been isolated and characterized as the piperidinium salt of [Eu(2)L(1)(4)](2-). Compared with the triple-stranded Eu(III) complex in the solid state, the quadruple-stranded complex displays a more intense emission signal with a distinct emission pattern indicating the higher symmetry of the quadruple-stranded complex.  相似文献

The 2,2′-bipyrimidine (bpm) adducts of the β-diketonate complexes of Eu(III), Sm(III), or Yb(III) with 2,2′,6,6′-tetramethyl-2,4-heptanedione (tmhd) resulted in the formation of dinuclear species. The synthesis and X-ray structure of these three new dinuclear lanthanide complexes are found to be similar. Each lanthanide ion is eight coordinate, bound to six O-atoms from the β-diketonates and 2N atoms from the bridging bpm ligand. They exhibit Ln–Ln distances (Sm(III): 6.935 Å, Eu(III): 6.901 Å, Yb(III): 6.679 Å) and Ln–ligand distances that are consistent with the decrease in radii across the lanthanide series. Absorption spectra of the complexes are dominated by ligand absorptions. Both the solution and solid state emission spectra of the complexes resemble ordinary monomeric lanthanide species, indicating independent ions in the dinuclear species. Cyclic voltammetry of all the complexes appear almost identical with discernable ligand centered redox reactions. The complex with Eu(III) ions, having the lowest possible lanthanide redox potential, was not found to display a signal corresponding to metal reduction.  相似文献

The template condensation of (R)-2,2′-diamino-1,1′-binaphthyl and 2,6-diformylpyridine in the presence of lanthanide(III) nitrates was used to obtain new Pr(III), Nd(III), Sm(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III) and Yb(III) complexes of the chiral hexaaza Schiff base macrocycle L. The complexes have been characterised on the basis of ESI MS spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy and elemental analyses. The X-ray crystal structure of Eu(III) complex reveals highly twisted helical conformation of the macrocycle L. The 10-coordinate Eu(III) ion is coordinated by all six nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle and two additional bidentate nitrate anions. Emission and excitation spectra as well as luminescence decay time measurements (at 295 and 77 K) were used to characterize the photophysical properties of the Eu(III), Gd(III) and Yb(III) complexes in the solid-state. Energy transfer from ligand to the Eu(III) and Yb(III) ions has been demonstrated and thermally activated back energy transfer processes have been analyzed.  相似文献

Three new dinuclear lanthanide(III) complexes {Eu(hfac)(3)(H(2)O)}(2)(μ-HPhMq)(2) (2) and {Ln(hfac)(3)(H(2)O)}(2)(μ-HMe(2)NC(6)H(4)Mq)(2) (Ln = Eu, 3; Nd, 4) with 8-hydroxylquinoline derivatives in μ-phenol mode were synthesized and characterized, where hfac(-) = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, HPhMq = 2-methyl-5-phenylquinolin-8-ol, and HMe(2)C(6)H(4)Mq = 5-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-2-methylquinolin-8-ol. Compared with that (400 nm) for {Eu(hfac)(3)}(2)(μ-HMq)(2) (1, HMq = 2-methy-8-hydroxylquinoline), the excitation wavelength for sensitized lanthanide luminescence is extended to ca. 420 nm for 2, and 500 nm for 4 by introducing a phenyl or 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl to 8-hydroxylquinoline. These dinuclear lanthanide(III) complexes exhibit distinctly fluoride-induced lanthanide(III) emission enhancement in both intensity and lifetime due to replacing coordination water molecules or formation of strong O-H···F hydrogen bonds with coordinated H(2)O and μ-phenol, thus suppressing significantly the non-radiative O-H oscillators.  相似文献

A set of three potentially bridging ligands containing two tridentate chelating N,N',O-donor (pyrazole-pyridine-amide) donors separated by an o, m, or p-phenylene spacer has been prepared and their coordination chemistry with lanthanide(III) ions investigated. Ligand L(1) (p-phenylene spacer) forms complexes with a 2:3 M:L ratio according to the proportions used in the reaction mixture; the Ln(2)(L(1))(3) complexes contain two 9-coordinate Ln(III) centres with all three bridging ligands spanning both metal ions, and have a cylindrical (non-helical) 'mesocate' architecture. The 1:1 complexes display a range of structural types depending on the conditions used, including a cyclic Ln(4)(L(1))(4) tetranuclear helicate, a Ln(2)(L(1))(2) dinuclear mesocate, and an infinite one-dimensional coordination polymer in which metal ions and bridging ligands alternate along the sequence. ESMS studies indicate that the 1:1 complexes form a mixture of oligonuclear species {Ln(L(1))}(n) in solution (n up to 5) which are likely to be cyclic helicates. In contrast, ligands L(2) and L(3) (with o- and m-phenylene spacers, respectively) generally form dinuclear Ln(2)L(2) Ln(III) complexes in which the two ligands may be arranged in a helical or non-helical architecture about the two metal ions. These complexes also contain an additional exogenous bidentate bridging ligand, either acetate or formate, which has arisen from hydrolysis of solvent molecules promoted by the Lewis-acidity of the Ln(III) ions. Luminescence studies on some of the Nd(III) complexes showed that excitation into ligand-centred pi-pi* transitions result in the characteristic near-infrared luminescence from Nd(III) at 1060 nm.  相似文献

Inert and optically active pseudo-octahedral Cr(III)N6 and Ru(II)N6 chromophores have been incorporated by self-assembly into heterobimetallic triple-stranded helicates HHH-[CrLnL3]6+ and HHH-[RuLnL3]5+. The crystal structures of [CrLnL(3)](CF(3)SO(3))(6) (Ln=Nd, Eu, Yb, Lu) and [RuLnL3](CF3SO3)5 (Ln=Eu, Lu) demonstrate that the helical structure can accommodate metal ions of different sizes, without sizeable change in the intermetallic MLn distances. These systems are ideally suited for unravelling the molecular factors affecting the intermetallic nd-->4f communication. Visible irradiation of the Cr(III)N6 and Ru(II)N6 chromophores in HHH-[MLnL3]5/6+ (Ln=Nd, Yb, Er; M=Cr, Ru) eventually produces lanthanide-based near infrared (NIR) emission, after directional energy migration within the complexes. Depending on the kinetic regime associated with each specific d-f pair, the NIR luminescence decay times can be tuned from micro- to milliseconds. The origin of this effect, together with its rational control for programming optical functions in discrete heterobimetallic entities, are discussed.  相似文献

The design and synthesis of several bis-macrocyclic cyclen (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane) ligands and their corresponding lanthanum or europium complexes is described; these dinuclear lanthanide systems were made by connecting two macrocyclic cyclen moieties through a rigid, covalent, p-xylylenediamide bridge or a flexible aliphatic hexane bridge. These ligands were subsequently functionalised with six acetamide pendant arms (CONR1R2: R1 = R2 = H or CH3, or R1 = H, R2 = CH3). The corresponding lanthanide bis-complexes were then formed by reaction with La(III) and Eu(III) triflates, yielding overall cationic (+VI charged) complexes.  相似文献

The structure and stoichiometry of the lanthanide(III) (Ln) complexes with the ligand 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (Htta) formed in a biphasic aqueous room-temperature ionic liquid system have been studied by complementary physicochemical methods. Equilibrium thermodynamics, optical absorption and luminescence spectroscopies, high-energy X-ray scattering, EXAFS, and molecular dynamics simulations all support the formation of anionic Nd(tta)4(-) or Eu(tta)4(-) complexes with no water coordinated to the metal center in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (C4mim+Tf2N(-)), rather than the hydrated, neutral complexes, M(tta)(3)(H2O)n)(n = 2 or 3), that form in nonpolar molecular solvents, such as xylene or chloroform. The presence of anionic lanthanide complexes in C4mim+Tf2N(-) is made possible by the exchange of the ionic liquid anions into the aqueous phase for the lanthanide complex. The resulting complexes in the ionic liquid phase should be thought of as weak C4mim+Ln(tta)4(-) ion pairs which exert little influence on the structure of the ionic liquid phase.  相似文献

Reaction of Pt(dppm-P,P')Cl2 (dppm = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)methane) with HCCPhtpy (HCCPhtpy = 4'-(4-ethynylphenyl)-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) in the presence of copper(I) iodide and diisopropylamine induced isolation of mononuclear complex cis-Pt(dppm-P,P')(C[triple bond]CPhtpy)2 (1), which can be converted into face-to-face diplatinum(II) species Pt2(mu-dppm)2(C[triple bond]CPhtpy)4 (5) when equivalent dppm is added. Incorporating 1 or 5 to Ln(hfac)3(H2O)2 (Hhfac = hexafluoroacetylacetone) gave PtLn2 (Ln = Nd (2), Eu (3), Yb (4)) or Pt2Ln4 (Ln = Nd (6), Eu (7), Gd (8), Yb (9)) adducts with the lanthanide centers chelated by terdentate terpyridyl in the bridging C[triple bond]CPhtpy. The structures of 1, 6, 7, and 9 were determined by X-ray crystallography. Upon excitation at lambdaex = 360-450 nm (2-4) or 360-500 nm (6-9), where the PtII alkynyl antenna chromophores absorb strongly but the model complexes Ln(hfac)3(HC[triple bond]CPhtpy) lack obvious absorption in this region, these PtLn2 and Pt2Ln4 (Ln = Nd, Eu, Yb) species exhibit band-like lanthanide luminescence that is typical of the corresponding Ln3+ ions, demonstrating unambiguously that efficient Pt --> Ln energy transfer occurs indeed from the PtII alkynyl antenna chromophores to the lanthanide centers across the bridging CCPhtpy with intramolecular Pt...Ln distances being ca. 14.2 A. The Pt --> Ln energy transfer rate (kET) is 6.07 x 10(7) s(-1) for Pt2Nd4 (6) and 2.12 x 10(5) s(-1) for Pt2Yb4 (9) species.  相似文献

Solid complexes of lanthanide nitrate with 1,4-di(N,N-di-n-butyl-acetamido)-quinoxaline-2,3-dione (L), [Ln(N03)3L.H2O] (Ln=La, Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Er), have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV-vis spectra and conductivity measurements. The fluorescence property of the europium complex in solid state and in MeCN, acetone, AcOEt and THF was studied. Under the excitation, the europium complex exhibited characteristic emissions of europium. The result indicates that the triplet state energy level of the ligand matches better to the resonance level of Eu(III) than Tb(III) ion.  相似文献

The design and synthesis of dinuclear-lanthanide complexes possessing triazole-based bridges, formed by using copper catalysed 1,3-cycloaddition reactions between heptadentate alkyne functionalised cyclen europium or terbium complexes and di-azides (CuAAC reactions), are described. While this click reaction worked well for the formation of the homo-Eu(III) and Tb(III) bis-tri-arm cyclen N,N-dimethyl acetamide complexes, 2Eu and 2Tb, and for the homo-Eu(III) chiral N-methylnaphthalene based complexes 3Eu (S,S,S) and 4Eu (R,R,R), the formation of the Eu(III) complex of the primary amide analogue of 2, namely 1Eu, was not successful, clearly demonstrating the effect that the nature of the pendant arms has on this reaction. Furthermore, the click reactions between the free alkyne cyclen bis-derivatives (5-8) and the di-azide were unsuccessful, most likely due to the high affinity of the cyclen macrocycles for Cu(II). The Eu(III) complexes of 2-4 and 2Tb all gave rise to sensitised metal ion centred emission upon excitation of the triazole or the naphthalene antennae in methanol solution, and their hydration states were determined, which showed that while the Eu(III) mono-nuclear complexes had q ~ 2, the click products all had q ~ 1. In the case of 3Eu (S,S,S) and 4Eu (R,R,R), the circular polarised emission (CPL) was also observed for both, demonstrating the chiral environment of the lanthanide centres.  相似文献

The heterobitopic ligands L ABX (X=1, 2, 3, 4 or 5), differing only by a Cl or NEt(2) substituent, have been designed to complex with a pair of lanthanide ions to form triple-stranded bimetallic helicates of overall composition [Ln2(L ABX)3]6+. The percentage of HHH (head-head-head) isomer, in which each of the three ligand strands coordinates to the same lanthanide ion with the same coordination unit, is deciding the ability of the ligands to selectively form heterobimetallic complexes containing one luminescent and one magnetic or two different luminescent ions. It deviates significantly from the statistical value of 25 % and ranges from 6-20 % for L AB2 complexes to 93-96 % for L AB4 complexes. The equilibrium between HHT (head-head-tail) and HHH isomers has been investigated in detail for homobimetallic helicates (Ln=Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Lu) by means of variable temperature NMR and thermodynamic parameters have been determined. The equilibrium is characterized by small values of DeltaH and DeltaS, which vary in opposite direction along the lanthanide series for complexes with the same ligand in a way that keeps the value of DeltaG almost constant. The results are interpreted in terms of differences in interstrand stacking, ion-dipole interactions and metal-metal repulsion.  相似文献

The segmental ligand 2-[6-(N,N-diethylcarbamoyl)pyridin-2-yl]-1,1'-dimethyl-5,5'-methylene-2'-(6-methylpyridine-2-yl)bis[1H-benzimidazole] (L3) reacts with a stoichiometric mixture of LnIII (Ln = La, Eu, Gd) and M(II) (M = Zn, Fe) in acetonitrile to produce selectively the heterodimetallic triple-stranded helicates (HHH)-[LnM(L3)3]5+. In these complexes, M(II) is pseudooctahedrally coordinated by the three wrapped bidentate binding units, thus forming a noncovalent tripod which organizes the three unsymmetrical tridentate segments to give ninefold coordination to LnIII. The introduction of a methyl group at the 6 position of the terminal pyridine in L3 sterically reduces the complexing ability of the bidentate segment for M(II). Spectroscopic (ESI-MS, UV/Vis/NIR, NMR), magnetic and electrochemical measurements show that 1) the head-to-head-to-head triple helical complexes (HHH)-[LnM(L3)3]5+ are quantitatively formed in solution only for ligand concentrations larger than 0.01 M, 2) FeII adopts a pure high-spin electronic configuration in (HHH)-[LnFe(L3)3]5+ and 3) the FeII/FeIII oxidation process is prevented by steric constraints. Detailed photophysical studies of (HHH)-[Eu-Zn(L3)3]5+ confirm that the pseudotricapped trigonal-prismatic lanthanide coordination site is not affected by the methyl groups bound to the terminal pyridine, thus leading to significant Eu-centered emission upon UV irradiation. In (HHH)-[EuFe(L3)3]5+, a resonant intramolecular Eu-->Fe(II)hs energy transfer partially quenches the Eu-centered luminescence; however, the residual red emission demonstrates that high-spin iron(II) is compatible with the sensitization of Eu(III) in heterodimetallic d-f complexes. The influence of the electronic configuration of Fe(II) on the efficiency of Eu(III)-->Fe(II) energy-transfer processes is discussed together with its consequence for the design of optically active spin-crossover supramolecular devices.  相似文献

The experimentally observed extraction complexes of trivalent lanthanide Eu(III) and actinide Am(III)/Cm(III) cations with purified Cyanex301 [bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)dithiophosphinic acid, HBTMPDTP denoted as HL], i.e., ML(3) (M = Eu, Am, Cm) as well as the postulated complexes HAmL(4) and HEuL(4)(H(2)O) have been studied by using energy-consistent 4f- and 5f-in-core pseudopotentials for trivalent f elements, combined with density functional theory and second-order M?ller-Plesset perturbation theory. Special attention was paid to explaining the high selectivity of Cyanex301 for Am(III)/Cm(III) over Eu(III). It is shown that the neutral complexes ML(3), where L acts as a bidentate ligand and the metal cation is coordinated by six S atoms, are most likely the most stable extraction complexes. The calculated metal-sulfur bond distances for ML(3) do reflect the cation employed; i.e., the larger the cation, the longer the metal-sulfur bond distances. The calculated M-S and M-P bond lengths agree very well with the available experimental data. The obtained changes of the Gibbs free energies in the extraction reactions M(3+) + 3HL → ML(3) + 3H(+) agree with the thermodynamical priority for Am(3+) and Cm(3+). Moreover, the ionic metal-ligand dissociation energies of the extraction complexes ML(3) show that, although EuL(3) is the most stable complex in the gas phase, it is the least stable in aqueous solution.  相似文献

Our recent results on the investigation of lanthanide metal polymer complexes were presented. Luminescence properties of Tb3+ or Eu3+ -polycarboxylate complexes in aqueous solution were investigated. The excitation band near 300 nm for Tb or Eu(polyacrylate) solutions were drastically enhanced by the addition of hydroxy radical generating reagents as well as ultrasonic irradiation. These spectral changes were attributed to the energy transfer from chromophore molecules formed by generated hydroxy radicals in both systems. Since the increase in the luminescence intensity was proportional to the hydroxy radical concentration, the Eu3+ or Tb3+ (PAA) system can provide a convenient method for the determination of hydroxy radical concentration in aqueous solution. We have also utilized lanthanide metal ion complexes as a luminescent emitter in electroluminescence (EL) devices. The configuration of the EL cell and experimental results were discussed.  相似文献

Metathesis of lanthanide tris di-tert-butyl beta-diketonates ([Ln(thd)3] Ln=Pr, Nd, Eu, Tb) with one or two equivalents of group 1 salts of the sulfur bridged binaphtholate dianion [1,1'-S(2-OC10H4But(2)-3,6)2]2-, [M2L], M=K, Li affords luminescent mono- and bis-ligand substituted complexes ML[LnL(thd)2].L; M=K, Ln=Pr , Nd , Eu and Tb (L=thf, diethyl ether or toluene) and M(thf)2[LnL2(thd)]; M=Li, Ln=Pr , Nd , Eu , Tb . The potassium salt [K2L] affords mono-L substituted complexes most cleanly, while the lithium salt [Li2L] yields the bis-L substituted complexes most cleanly. The L ligands function as antenna for the sensitised lanthanide-centred emission in Eu3+ and Tb3+ complexes. The X-ray single-crystal structures of mono- and bis-L lanthanide complexes of Nd3+ are presented.  相似文献

Heterodinuclear lanthanide(III)-sodium(I) complexes [LnNa(L)(Cl)(2)(CH(3)OH)] (Ln=La[bond]Nd, Sm[bond]Lu), where H(2)L is a [1+1] asymmetric compartmental macrocyclic ligand containing a N(3)O(2) Schiff base and a O(3)O(2) crown-ether-like coordination site, have been prepared and characterized by IR, (1)H, (13)C, and (23)Na NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and electron microscopy. In the solid state, the lanthanide(III) ions coordinate the Schiff-base N(3)O(2) site, and the sodium ion occupies the O(3)O(2) crownlike cavity, as shown by the X-ray crystal structures of the Nd, Eu, Gd, and Yb derivatives. In these complexes, the lanthanide(III) ion is coordinated by two chlorine atoms in the trans position and by three nitrogen and two negatively charged phenol oxygen atoms of the Schiff base, and the ion is heptacoordinated with a pentagonal bipyramidal geometry. The sodium ion is coordinated by three etheric oxygen atoms and the two phenolic oxygens that act as a bridge. A methanol molecule is also coordinated in the apical position of the resulting pentagonal pyramidal polyhedron. A detailed (1)H and (13)C NMR study was carried out in CD(3)OD for both diamagnetic and paramagnetic heterodinuclear complexes [LnNa(L)(Cl)(2)(CH(3)OH)]. The complexes are also isostructural in solution, and their structures parallel those found in the solid state. Moreover, some significative distances determined in the solid state and in solution are comparable. Finally, the potential use of these complexes as molecular probes for the selective recognition of specific metal ions has been tested. In particular, their ability to act as shift reagents and the selectivity of the O(3)O(2) site towards Li(+), Ca(2+), and K(+) were investigated by (23)Na NMR spectroscopy.  相似文献

A new bis-β-diketone, 3,3'-bis(4,4,4-trifluoro-1,3-dioxobutyl)biphenyl (BTB), has been designed and prepared for the synthesis of a series of dinuclear lanthanide complexes [Ln(2)(BTB)(3)(C(2)H(5)OH)(2)(H(2)O)(2)] [Ln = Eu (1), Gd (2)], [Ln(2)(BTB)(3)(DME)(2)] [Ln = Nd (3), Yb (4); DME = ethylene glycol dimethyl ether] and [Eu(2)(BTB)(3)(L)(2)] [L = 2,2-bipydine (5); 1,10-phenanthroline (6); 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (7)]. Complexes 1-7 have been characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and their photophysical properties are investigated. X-ray crystallographical analysis reveals that complexes 1, 3 and 4 adopt triple-stranded dinuclear structures which are formed by three bis-bidentate ligands with two lanthanide ions. The complexes 1 and 3-7 display strong visible red or NIR luminescence upon irradiation at ligand band around 372 nm, depending on the choice of the lanthanide. The solid-state photoluminescence quantum yields and the lifetimes of Eu(3+) complexes are determined and described.  相似文献

Three unsymmetrical ditopic hexadentate ligands coded for the recognition of trivalent lanthanide ions have been synthesized, L(AB), L(AC), and L(BC), where A represents a benzimidazole-pyridine-benzimidazole coordination unit, B a benzimidazole-pyridine-carboxamide one, and C a benzimidazole-pyridine-carboxylic acid moiety. Under stoichiometric 2:3 (Ln:L) conditions, these ligands self-assemble with lanthanide ions to yield triple-stranded bimetallic helicates having a sizable stability in acetonitrile: log beta(23) values for Eu are equal to 23.9 +/- 0.5 (L(AB)), 23.3 +/- 0.7 (deprotonated L(AC)), and 29.8 +/- 0.5 (deprotonated L(BC)). The crystal structure of the EuEu helicate with L(AB) shows 9-coordinate metal ions and an HHH (H stands for head) configuration of the helically wrapped ligand strands. In the presence of equimolar quantities of Ln and Ln' ions, L(AB) displays a remarkable predisposition to form HHH-heterobimetallic edifices, as proved both in the solid state by the crystal structures of the LaEu, LaTb, PrEr, and PrLu helicates and in solution by NMR spectroscopy. In all cases, the benzimidazole-pyridine-carboxamide units of the three ligands are bound to the smaller lanthanide ion, a fact further ascertained by high-resolution luminescence data on LaEu and by (1)H NMR. Analysis of the lanthanide-induced (1)H NMR shifts and of the spin-lattice relaxation times of the [LnLu(L(AB))(3)](6+) series (Ln = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu) demonstrates the isostructural nature of the complexes in solution and that the crystal structure of LaTb is a good model for the solution structure. The selectivity of L(AB) for heteropairs of Ln(III) ions increases with increasing difference in ionic radius, resulting in 70% of the heterobimetallic species for deltar(i) = 0.1 A and up to 90% for LaLu (deltar(i) = 0.18 A), and corresponding to delta(deltaG) in the range 3-10 kJ.mol(-)(1). The origins of this stabilization are discussed in terms of the donor properties of the coordinating units and of the preferential formation of HHH isomers.  相似文献
