We prove the uniqueness of Riemann solutions in the class of entropy solutions in for the system of compressible Euler equations, under usual assumptions on the equation of state for the pressure which imply strict hyperbolicity of the system and genuine nonlinearity of the first and third characteristic families. In particular, if the Riemann solutions consist of at most rarefaction waves and contact discontinuities, we show the global -stability of the Riemann solutions even in the class of entropy solutions in with arbitrarily large oscillation for the system. We apply our framework established earlier to show that the uniqueness of Riemann solutions implies their inviscid asymptotic stability under perturbation of the Riemann initial data, as long as the corresponding solutions are in and have local bounded total variation satisfying a natural condition on its growth with time. No specific reference to any particular method for constructing the entropy solutions is made. Our uniqueness result for Riemann solutions can easily be extended to entropy solutions , piecewise Lipschitz in , for any 0$">.

We study affine hyperspheres with constant sectional curvature (with respect to the affine metric ). A conjecture by M. Magid and P. Ryan states that every such affine hypersphere with nonzero Pick invariant is affinely equivalent to either

where the dimension satisfies or . Up to now, this conjecture was proved if is positive definite or if is a -dimensional Lorentz space. In this paper, we give an affirmative answer to this conjecture for arbitrary dimensional Lorentzian affine hyperspheres.

We shall discuss the class of surfaces with holomorphic right Gauss maps in non-compact duals of compact semi-simple Lie groups (e.g. ), which contains minimal surfaces in and constant mean curvature surfaces in . A Weierstrass type representation formula and a Chern-Osserman type inequality for such surfaces are given.

The combinatorial -Catalan numbers are weighted sums of Dyck paths introduced by J. Haglund and studied extensively by Haglund, Haiman, Garsia, Loehr, and others. The -Catalan numbers, besides having many subtle combinatorial properties, are intimately connected to symmetric functions, algebraic geometry, and Macdonald polynomials. In particular, the 'th -Catalan number is the Hilbert series for the module of diagonal harmonic alternants in variables; it is also the coefficient of in the Schur expansion of . Using -analogues of labelled Dyck paths, Haglund et al. have proposed combinatorial conjectures for the monomial expansion of and the Hilbert series of the diagonal harmonics modules.

This article extends the combinatorial constructions of Haglund et al. to the case of lattice paths contained in squares. We define and study several -analogues of these lattice paths, proving combinatorial facts that closely parallel corresponding results for the -Catalan polynomials. We also conjecture an interpretation of our combinatorial polynomials in terms of the nabla operator. In particular, we conjecture combinatorial formulas for the monomial expansion of , the ``Hilbert series' , and the sign character .

We study linear systems on Enriques surfaces. We prove rationality of Seshadri constants of ample line bundles on Enriques surfaces and provide lower bounds on these numbers. We show the nonexistence of -very ample line bundles on Enriques surfaces of degree for , thus answering an old question of Ballico and Sommese.

This work deals with the linear wave equation considered in the whole plane except for a rectilinear moving slit, represented by a curve with Along either homogeneous Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions are imposed. We discuss existence and uniqueness for these problems, and derive explicit representation formulae for solutions. The latter have a simple geometrical interpretation, and in particular allow us to derive precise asymptotic expansions for solutions near the tip of the curve. In the Neumann case, we thus recover a classical result in fracture dynamics, namely the form of the stress intensity factor in crack propagation under antiplane shear conditions.

This paper addresses problems on arithmetic Macaulayfications of projective schemes. We give a surprising complete answer to a question poised by Cutkosky and Herzog. Let be the blow-up of a projective scheme along the ideal sheaf of . It is known that there are embeddings for , where denotes the maximal generating degree of , and that there exists a Cohen-Macaulay ring of the form (which gives an arithmetic Macaulayfication of ) if and only if , for , and is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. We show that under these conditions, there are well-determined invariants and such that is Cohen-Macaulay for all d(I)e + \varepsilon$"> and e_0$">, and that these bounds are the best possible. We also investigate the existence of a Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebra of the form . If has negative -invariant, we prove that such a Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebra exists if and only if , for 0$">, and is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, these conditions imply the Cohen-Macaulayness of for all d(I)e + \varepsilon$"> and e_0$">.

An explicit formula for the toric -vector of an Eulerian poset in terms of the -index is developed using coalgebra techniques. The same techniques produce a formula in terms of the flag -vector. For this, another proof based on Fine's algorithm and lattice-path counts is given. As a consequence, it is shown that the Kalai relation on dual posets, , is the only equation relating the -vectors of posets and their duals. A result on the -vectors of oriented matroids is given. A simple formula for the -index in terms of the flag -vector is derived.

Ganea conjectured that for any finite CW complex and any , . In this paper we prove two special cases of this conjecture. The main result is the following. Let be a -connected -dimensional CW complex (not necessarily finite). We show that if and (which implies ), then . This is proved by showing that in a much larger range, and then showing that under the conditions imposed, . The second special case is an extension of Singhof's earlier result for manifolds.

A Riemannian manifold is associated with a Schouten -tensor which is a naturally defined Codazzi tensor in case is a locally conformally flat Riemannian manifold. In this paper, we study the Riemannian functional defined on , where is the space of smooth Riemannian metrics on a compact smooth manifold and is the elementary symmetric functions of the eigenvalues of with respect to . We prove that if and a conformally flat metric is a critical point of with , then must have constant sectional curvature. This is a generalization of Gursky and Viaclovsky's very recent theorem that the critical point of with characterized the three-dimensional space forms.

Let be a finite field, the degree extension of , and the general linear group with entries in . This paper studies the ``generalized Steinberg" (GS) representations of and proves the equivalence of several different characterizations for this class of representations. As our main result we show that the union of the class of cuspidal and GS representations of is in natural one-one correspondence with the set of Galois orbits of characters of , the regular orbits of course corresponding to the cuspidal representations. Besides using Green's character formulas to define GS representations, we characterize GS representations by associating to them idempotents in certain commuting algebras corresponding to parabolic inductions and by showing that GS representations are the sole components of these induced representations which are ``generic" (have Whittaker vectors).

The classification of curves of genus 2 over an algebraically closed field was studied by Clebsch and Bolza using invariants of binary sextic forms, and completed by Igusa with the computation of the corresponding three-dimensional moduli variety . The locus of curves with group of automorphisms isomorphic to one of the dihedral groups or is a one-dimensional subvariety.

In this paper we classify these curves over an arbitrary perfect field of characteristic in the case and in the case. We first parameterize the -isomorphism classes of curves defined over by the -rational points of a quasi-affine one-dimensional subvariety of ; then, for every curve representing a point in that variety we compute all of its -twists, which is equivalent to the computation of the cohomology set .

The classification is always performed by explicitly describing the objects involved: the curves are given by hyperelliptic models and their groups of automorphisms represented as subgroups of . In particular, we give two generic hyperelliptic equations, depending on several parameters of , that by specialization produce all curves in every -isomorphism class.
