Let k be a knot in S3. There is an epimorphism from π1(S3k) onto a free product of two nontrivial cyclic groups sending a meridian to an element of length two iff k has property Q (Topology of Manifolds, Markham, Chicago, IL, 1970, pp. 195-199) that is if there is a closed surface F in S3 containing k, such that k is imprimitive in H1(X) and in H1(Y) where X and Y are the closures of the components of S3F. We give answers to questions of Simon (1970) about properties Q, Q∗ and Q∗∗. Epimorphisms from knot groups onto torus knot groups are also studied and some results on property P and surgery are included.  相似文献

Recently Stoimenow showed that for every knot K and any nN and u0?u(K) there is a prime knot Kn,uo which is n-equivalent to the knot K and has unknotting number u(Kn,uo) equal to u0. The similar result has been obtained for the 4-ball genus gs of a knot. Stoimenow also proved that any admissible value of the Tristram-Levine signature σξ can be realized by a knot with the given Vassiliev invariants of bounded order. In this paper, we show that for every knot K with genus g(K) and any nN and m?g(K) there exists a prime knot L which is n-equivalent to K and has genus g(L) equal to m.  相似文献

Kondo and Sakai independently gave a characterization of Alexander polynomials for knots which are transformed into the trivial knot by a single crossing change. The first author gave a characterization of Alexander polynomials for knots which are transformed into the trefoil knot (and into the figure-eight knot) by a single crossing change. In this note, we will give a characterization of Alexander polynomials for knots which are transformed into the 10132 knot (and into the (5,2)-torus knot) by a single crossing change. Moreover, this method can be applied for knots with monic Alexander polynomials.  相似文献

Little is known on the classification of Heegaard splittings for hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Although Kobayashi gave a complete classification of Heegaard splittings for the exteriors of 2-bridge knots, our knowledge of other classes is extremely limited. In particular, there are very few hyperbolic manifolds that are known to have a unique minimal genus splitting. Here we demonstrate that an infinite class of hyperbolic knot exteriors, namely exteriors of certain “twisted torus knots” originally studied by Morimoto, Sakuma and Yokota, have a unique minimal genus Heegaard splitting of genus two. We also conjecture that these manifolds possess irreducible yet weakly reducible splittings of genus three. There are no known examples of such Heegaard splittings.  相似文献

In this paper we provide a complete algebraic invariant of link-homotopy, that is, an algebraic invariant that distinguishes two links if and only if they are link-homotopic. The paper establishes a connection between the “peripheral structures” approach to link-homotopy taken by Milnor, Levine and others, and the string link action approach taken by Habegger and Lin.  相似文献

Let L be a link in S3 that is in thin position but not in bridge position and let P be a thin level sphere with compressing disk D. We introduce the idea of alternating level spheres for D and show that all such spheres are thin and their widths are monotone decreasing. This allows us to generalize a result of Wu by giving a bound on the number of disjoint irreducible compressing disks P can have in terms of the width of P, including identifying thin spheres with unique compressing disks. We also give conditions under which P must be incompressible on some side or be weakly incompressible. In particular we show that the thin level sphere of second lowest width is weakly incompressible. If P is strongly compressible we describe how a pair of compressing disks must lie relative to the link.  相似文献

Associated with each oriented link is the two variable Homflypt polynomial. The Morton–Franks–Williams (MFW) inequality gives rise to an expression for the Homflypt polynomial with MFW coefficient polynomials. These MFW coefficient polynomials are labeled in a braid-dependent manner and may be zero, but display a number of interesting relations. One consequence is an expression for the first three Laurent coefficient polynomials in z as a function of the other coefficient polynomials and three link invariants: the minimum v-degree and v-span of the Homflypt polynomial, and the Conway polynomial.  相似文献

The problem of classifying, up to isometry, the orientable 3-manifolds that arise by identifying the faces of a Platonic solid was completely solved in a nice paper of Everitt [B. Everitt, 3-manifolds from Platonic solids, Topology Appl. 138 (2004) 253-263]. His work completes the classification begun by Best [L.A. Best, On torsion-free discrete subgroups of PSL2(C) with compact orbit space, Canad. J. Math. 23 (1971) 451-460], Lorimer [P.J. Lorimer, Four dodecahedral spaces, Pacific J. Math. 156 (2) (1992) 329-335], Prok [I. Prok, Classification of dodecahedral space forms, Beiträge Algebra Geom. 39 (2) (1998) 497-515; I. Prok, Fundamental tilings with marked cubes in spaces of constant curvature, Acta Math. Hungar. 71 (1-2) (1996) 1-14], and Richardson and Rubinstein [J. Richardson, J.H. Rubinstein, Hyperbolic manifolds from a regular polyhedron, preprint]. In a previous paper we investigated the topology of closed orientable 3-manifolds from Platonic solids in the spherical and Euclidean cases, and completely classified them, up to homeomorphism. Here we describe many topological properties of closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds arising from Platonic solids. As a consequence of our geometric and topological methods, we improve the distinction between the hyperbolic “Platonic” manifolds with the same homology, which up to this point was only known by computational means.  相似文献

We call a pair (K,m) of a knot K in the 3-sphere S3 and an integer m a Seifert fibered surgery if m-surgery on K yields a Seifert fiber space. For most known Seifert fibered surgeries (K,m), K can be embedded in a genus 2 Heegaard surface of S3 in a primitive/Seifert position, the concept introduced by Dean as a natural extension of primitive/primitive position defined by Berge. Recently Guntel has given an infinite family of Seifert fibered surgeries each of which has distinct primitive/Seifert positions. In this paper we give yet other infinite families of Seifert fibered surgeries with distinct primitive/Seifert positions from a different point of view.  相似文献

We consider a condition on a pair of the Alexander polynomials of knots which are realizable by a pair of knots with Gordian distance one. We show that there are infinitely many mutually disjoint infinite subsets in the set of the Alexander polynomials of knots such that every pair of distinct elements in each subset is not realizable by any pair of knots with Gordian distance one. As one of the subsets, we have an infinite set containing the Alexander polynomials of the trefoil knot and the figure eight knot. We also show that every pair of distinct Alexander polynomials such that one is the Alexander polynomial of a slice knot is realizable by a pair of knots of Gordian distance one, so that every pair of distinct elements in the infinite subset consisting of the Alexander polynomials of slice knots is realizable by a pair of knots with Gordian distance one. These results solve problems given by Y. Nakanishi and by I. Jong.  相似文献

This paper explicitly provides two exhaustive and infinite families of pairs (M,k), where M is a lens space and k is a non-hyperbolic knot in M, which produces a manifold homeomorphic to M, by a non-trivial Dehn surgery. Then, we observe the uniqueness of such knot in such lens space, the uniqueness of the slope, and that there is no preserving homeomorphism between the initial and the final M's. We obtain further that Seifert fibered knots, except for the axes, and satellite knots are determined by their complements in lens spaces. An easy application shows that non-hyperbolic knots are determined by their complement in atoroidal and irreducible Seifert fibered 3-manifolds.  相似文献

For any closed connected orientable 3-manifold M, we present a method for constructing infinitely many hyperbolic spatial embeddings of a given finite graph with no vertex of degree less than two from hyperbolic spatial graphs in S3 via the Heegaard splitting theory. These spatial embeddings are adjustable so as to take cycle subgraphs into specified homotopy classes of loops in M.  相似文献

Here we completely recognize those manifolds in the spherical and Euclidean cases, and state topological properties for many of them in the hyperbolic case. The proofs of the latter will appear in a forthcoming paper.  相似文献

In this paper, we prove that the Jones polynomial of a link diagram obtained through repeated tangle replacement operations can be computed by a sequence of suitable variable substitutions in simpler polynomials. For the case that all the tangles involved in the construction of the link diagram have at most k crossings (where k is a constant independent of the total number n of crossings in the link diagram), we show that the computation time needed to calculate the Jones polynomial of the link diagram is bounded above by O(nk). In particular, we show that the Jones polynomial of any Conway algebraic link diagram with n crossings can be computed in O(n2) time. A consequence of this result is that the Jones polynomial of any Montesinos link and two bridge knot or link of n crossings can be computed in O(n2) time.  相似文献

For a link K, let L(K) denote the ropelength of K and let Cr(K) denote the crossing number of K. An important problem in geometric knot theory concerns the bound on L(K) in terms of Cr(K). It is well known that there exist positive constants c1, c2 such that for any link K, c1⋅(Cr(K))3/4?L(K)?c2⋅(Cr(K))3/2. In this paper, we show that any closed braid with n crossings can be realized by a unit thickness rope of length at most of the order O(n6/5). Thus, if a link K admits a closed braid representation in which the number of crossings is bounded by a(Cr(K)) for some constant a?1, then we have L(K)?c⋅(Cr(K))6/5 for some constant c>0 which only depends on a. In particular, this holds for any link that admits a reduced alternating closed braid representation, or any link K that admits a regular projection in which there are at most O(Cr(K)) crossings and Seifert circles.  相似文献

The first step in tabulating the non-composite knots with n crossings is the tabulation of the non-singular plane projections of such knots, where two (piecewise linear) projections are regarded as equivalent, or in the same class, if they agree up to homeomorphism of the extended plane, i.e. two-sphere. This first step is here reduced to a simple algorithm suitable for computer use.  相似文献

Let M be a compact orientable irreducible 3-manifold, F be an essential non-separating closed surface in M. We denote by η(F) the open regular neighborhood of F. If Mη(F) has a high distance Heegaard splitting, then M has a unique minimal Heegaard splitting up to isotopy.  相似文献

The hexatangle
We are interested in knowing what type of manifolds are obtained by doing Dehn surgery on closed pure 3-braids in S3. In particular, we want to determine when we get S3 by surgery on such a link. We consider links which are small closed pure 3-braids; these are the closure of 3-braids of the form , where σ1, σ2 are the generators of the 3-braid group and e1, f1, e are integers. We study Dehn surgeries on these links, and determine exactly which ones admit an integral surgery producing the 3-sphere. This is equivalent to determining the surgeries of some type on a certain six component link L that produce S3. The link L is strongly invertible and its exterior double branch covers a certain configuration of arcs and spheres, which we call the hexatangle. Our problem is equivalent to determine which fillings of the spheres by integral tangles produce the trivial knot, which is what we explicitly solve. This hexatangle is a generalization of the pentangle, which is studied in [C.McA. Gordon, J. Luecke, Non-integral toroidal Dehn surgeries, Comm. Anal. Geom. 12 (2004) 417-485].  相似文献
