Color vision supports two distinct visual functions: discrimination and constancy. Discrimination requires that the visual response to distinct objects within a scene be different. Constancy requires that the visual response to any object be the same across scenes. Across changes in scene, adaptation can improve discrimination by optimizing the use of the available response range. Similarly, adaptation can improve constancy by stabilizing the visual response to any fixed object across changes in illumination. Can common mechanisms of adaptation achieve these two goals simultaneously? We develop a theoretical framework for answering this question and present several example calculations. In the examples studied, the answer is largely yes when the change of scene consists of a change in illumination and considerably less so when the change of scene consists of a change in the statistical ensemble of surface reflectances in the environment.  相似文献

A central goal of robotics and AI is to be able to deploy an agent to act autonomously in the real world over an extended period of time. To operate in the real world, autonomous robots rely on sensory information. Despite the potential richness of visual information from on-board cameras, many mobile robots continue to rely on non-visual sensors such as tactile sensors, sonar, and laser. This preference for relatively low-fidelity sensors can be attributed to, among other things, the characteristic requirement of real-time operation under limited computational resources. Illumination changes pose another big challenge. For true extended autonomy, an agent must be able to recognize for itself when to abandon its current model in favor of learning a new one; and how to learn in its current situation. We describe a self-contained vision system that works on-board a vision-based autonomous robot under varying illumination conditions. First, we present a baseline system capable of color segmentation and object recognition within the computational and memory constraints of the robot. This relies on manually labeled data and operates under constant and reasonably uniform illumination conditions. We then relax these limitations by introducing algorithms for (i) Autonomous planned color learning, where the robot uses the knowledge of its environment (position, size and shape of objects) to automatically generate a suitable motion sequence and learn the desired colors, and (ii) Illumination change detection and adaptation, where the robot recognizes for itself when the illumination conditions have changed sufficiently to warrant revising its knowledge of colors. Our algorithms are fully implemented and tested on the Sony ERS-7 Aibo robots.

The color of pixels can be represented in different color spaces which take into account different properties. However, no color space is well-suited to the discrimination of all texture databases and the prior determination of such a space is not easy. In this paper, we compare the performances reached by two texture classification schemes that use color spaces: (a) the single color space selection approach, that defines a set of texture features and then selects the color space with which the texture features allow to reach the highest classification accuracy, (b) the multi-color space feature selection (MCSFS) approach, that selects texture features which have been processed from images coded into different color spaces. Experiments carried out with benchmark texture databases show that taking advantage simultaneously of the properties of several color spaces thanks to the MCSFS approach improves the rates of well-classified images with lower learning and decision processing times.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a system that measures eye blinking rate and eye closure duration. The system consists of skin-color segmentation, facial features segmentation, iris positioning and blink detection. The proposed skin-segmentation procedure is based on a neural network approximation of a RGB skin-color histogram. This method is robust and adaptive to any skin-color training set. The largest remaining skin-color region among skin-color segmentation results is further segmented into open/closed eyes, lips, nose, eyebrows, and the remaining facial regions using a novel texture segmentation algorithm. The segmentation algorithm classifies pixels according to the highest probability among the estimated facial feature class probability density functions (PDFs). The segmented eye regions are analyzed with the Circular Hough transform with the purpose of finding iris candidates. The finial iris position is selected according to the location of the maximum correlation value obtained from correlation with a predefined mask. The positions of irises and eye states are monitored through time to estimate eye blinking frequency and eye closure duration. The method of the driver drowsiness detection using these parameters is illustrated. The proposed system is tested on CCD and CMOS cameras under different environmental conditions and the experimental results show high system performance.  相似文献

In this article we show how temporal backdrops that alternately change their color rapidly at recording rate can aid chroma keying by transforming color spill into a neutral background illumination. Since the chosen colors sum up to white, the chromatic (color) spill component is neutralized when integrating over both backdrop states. The ability to separate both states additionally allows to compute high-quality alpha mattes. Besides the neutralization of color spill, our method is invariant to foreground colors and supports applications with real-time demands. In this article, we explain different realizations of temporal backdrops and describe how keying and color spill neutralization are carried out, how artifacts resulting from rapid motion can be reduced, and how our approach can be implemented to be compatible with common real-time post-production pipelines.  相似文献
