Cerebral asymmetries in lexical ambiguity resolution were studied. In 2 experiments, targets related to the dominant and subordinate meanings of ambiguous word primes were presented for lexical decision after a 750-ms stimulus onset asynchrony. Experiment 1 compared presentation of target words to the left visual field/right-hemisphere (LVF/RH), to the right visual field/left-hemisphere (RVF/LH), or after redundant bilateral visual field (BVF) presentation. Experiment 2 examined unilateral priming in the absence of a BVF condition. On unilateral trials, priming was observed for dominant meanings in both the LVF/RH and RVF/LH, whereas subordinate priming was obtained only in the RVF/LH. These results suggest a possible role of hemispheric interaction in the availability of ambiguous word meanings. BVF performance evidenced a bilateral redundancy gain and priming that resembled that obtained on RVF/LH trials. Additional BVF analyses were not consistent with a strict race model interpretation and appear to implicate hemispheric cooperation in the bihemisperic processing of lexical information.  相似文献

In 7 experiments, the influence of varying stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) on the processing of redundant information about words and pseudowords was investigated. All stimuli were visually presented once or twice with 2 copies of the same item flashed either simultaneously or with short SOAs between presentations. The experiments revealed a redundancy gain for words that was absent for pseudowords. Furthermore, the redundancy gain disappeared at an SOA of 50 ms, and them was a gradual performance decline at longer SOAs. However, probing SOAs of 150 and 300 ms revealed that, compared with presentation of 1 target stimulus alone, words were processed significantly faster when target and redundant copy appeared with a 150-ms lag. The results are tentatively explained in a neurocognitive framework (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Observers identified consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) nonsense syllables with the letters arranged horizontally. In each of 2 experiments, there were fewer errors when stimuli were presented to the right visual field (RVF) and left hemisphere (LH) than when stimuli were presented to the left visual field (LVF) and right hemisphere (RH), and the extent to which the number of last-letter errors exceeded the number of first-letter errors was greater on LVF/RH than on RVF/LH trials. When the same stimulus was presented simultaneously to both visual fields (Experiment 2), the qualitative error pattern was very similar to the pattern obtained on LVF/RH trials. These effects replicate results obtained in earlier CVC identification experiments with letters arranged vertically. However. when a single stimulus was presented in the center of the visual field (Experiment 1), so that the first letter of the CVC projected to the LVF/RH and the last letter projected to the RVF/LH, the error pattern was a mixture of the LVF/RH and RVF/LH patterns, as if each hemisphere took the lead for processing the letter it received directly. Previous visual laterality experiments have shown that identification is better when 2 copies of the same stimulus are presented--1 to each hemisphere--than when only a single copy is presented to 1 hemisphere. New experiments were conducted to vary whether the 2 stimuli on a bilaterally redundant trial were physically identical or identical in format in addition to leading to identical responses. Substantial bihemispheric gain was obtained even when the 2 stimuli were perceptually distinctive (e.g., letter trigrams differing in case and font or the same numeric quantity represented by digits and dots). Thus, much of the bihemispheric advantage involves relatively abstract aspects of information processing. However, when the formats were sufficiently distinctive, there were small effects on bihemispheric performance, suggesting some role for less abstract processes that are sensitive to physical characteristics. The cutaneous eyeblink has 2 electromyographic components, 1 unilateral and early (R1) and 1 bilateral and late (R2), which are served by different neural pathways. These 2 reactions were measured when the eliciting stimulus was expected or relatively surprising. Forewarning was varied in 3 ways: Subjects received notice that the stimulus was about to occur on some trials (Experiment 1); delivered the stimulus to themselves on some trials (Experiments 2 & 3); or experienced a series of trials in which a tone was paired with the eliciting stimulus, followed by tone-alone trials interspersed with test trials (Experiment 4). In each case, forewarning enhanced R1 amplitudes while depressing R2 but reduced the latency of both components. This mixed pattern of effects reveals that the preparatory state provoked by forewarning focuses excitatory and inhibitory processes simultaneously on different reflex pathways: inhibition central and excitation peripheral. Examined in 5 experiments whether bihemispheric processing can be predicted from the processing observed when information is directed initially to just 1 hemisphere. Ss decided if laterally presented words rhymed with a previously presented central target. Trials varied in the degree to which the information displayed was redundant. On some trials, the same word appeared twice; in others, different words appeared, but they both led to the same decision; and finally, on some trials, different words appeared, each of which also led to a different decision. The patterns found for unilateral and bilateral trials were distinct. Furthermore, the pattern observed on bilateral trials could not be predicted from that found on unilateral trials, suggesting that interhemispheric interaction cannot be surmised from observing a hemisphere processing information in relative isolation. Four experiments assessed the relationships between the orienting and the executive networks of visual attention. Experiment 1 showed spatial inhibition of return (IOR) with target words. Experiment 2 showed a type of semantic inhibition that mimicked spatial IOR. Reaction times to targets preceded by 2 consecutively presented words, the prime and the intervening stimulus, were longer when the target and prime were related than when they were unrelated. Experiment 3 combined spatial and semantic inhibition in a lexical-decision task. Spatial IOR was observed with both related and unrelated targets, but semantic inhibition was observed only when target words were presented in uncued locations. A similar interaction between IOR and positive semantic priming was observed when the intervening stimulus was not presented (Experiment 4). Implications for the relationships between the 2 attentional networks are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Lesions of retrosplenial cortex (RSP) disrupt spatial and contextual learning, suggesting that RSP may have a fundamental role in processing overlapping, or simultaneously presented stimuli. If so, then RSP lesions might also be expected to disrupt learning that requires the concurrent processing of phasic conditioned stimuli. In Experiment 1, rats were trained in a compound feature negative discrimination task in which a tone was presented and immediately followed by food on some trials, while on other trials a visual stimulus was simultaneously presented along with the tone and not reinforced. Normal rats learned to discriminate between the trials but RSP-lesioned rats exhibited low levels of conditioning on both types of trials. Experiment 2 demonstrated that this effect was not simply due to a general inability to form associations, since RSP-lesioned rats exhibited normal responding when the visual stimulus was presented alone and paired with food. These findings support the view that RSP has an important role in learning that involves the processing of simultaneously presented stimuli and have implications for understanding the functional relationship between the hippocampus and RSP. Human sensitivity to correlational structure between nontargets and likelihood of target presence in a visual letter-search task were studied in two experiments. In each of these experiments, the performance of subjects for whom the nontarget information was altered in the final trial block was compared with the performance of subjects for whom the nontarget information did not change. When stimulus strings were presented individually on a computer screen and subjects were required to make a yes-no decision about target presence (Experiment 1), the change in nontarget structure resulted in increased reaction times for target-absent trials. When subjects searched simultaneously for three possible targets (Experiment 2), the change in nontarget structure produced increased error rates and increased reaction times for both target-absent and target-present trials. Correlations between the amount of predictive information in individual stimulus strings and reaction times also showed that both switching and nonswitching subjects were sensitive to the nontarget context. However, neither self-reports of strategy nor postexperiment choices between context-consistent and-inconsistent letter strings indicated any explicit knowledge of the predictive information in the nontarget stimuli. Subjects can thus acquire and benefit from, apparently without awareness, information about subtle correlational structure in nontarget elements in simple visual search.  相似文献

The authors examined some of the sensorimotor effects of the split-brain operation to understand how a "dual mind" can produce unified behavior. They report psychophysical evidence of extinction to bilateral simultaneous stimulation in callosotomy patient J.W.: Although he could verbally report the occurrence of a unilateral left or right visual field target, left field report accuracy dropped by 34% when targets occurred bilaterally. Paradoxically, the same stimulus conditions produced abnormally robust redundant signal effects on simple manual and vocal reaction times, which exceeded predictions that were based on probability summation. Neural summation is often inferred from redundancy gain of this magnitude. Because this seems less likely after callosotomy, the authors suggest a model that is based on response competition between the disconnected hemispheres to account for J.W.'s redundant target effects. The dissociation between explicit report and motor performance is discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Target location probability was manipulated in a visual search task. When the target was twice as likely to appear on 1 side of the display as the other, manual button-press response times were faster (Experiment 1A) and first saccades were more frequently directed (Experiment 1B) to the more probable locations. When the target appeared with equal probability at each location in this search task, performance benefited from repetition of target location in the preceding trials (Experiment 2). When the trial sequence was constrained so that target location did not repeat within a series of 4 trials, there was no longer an advantage for more probable locations (Experiment 3). The authors conclude that the search benefits for more probable locations resulted from short-term target location repetitions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The ability to detect left-sided stimuli (visual or tactile) was studied in visual and tactile extinction (RBD) patients and in healthy (C) subjects. Stimuli were single or double; double stimuli were always cross-modal and could be released across the 2 hemispaces or within the same hemispace. Moreover, the stimuli could be either simultaneous or separated by 1 of 3 different asynchronies (105, 505, 905 ms). C subjects were perfect in all conditions. RBD patients omitted the contralesional tactile stimulus in bilateral trials (across space, classical extinction). They also omitted the tactile stimulus in unilateral left trials (within hemispace). Both effects showed the same temporal modulation with lower extinction rates at longer stimulus onset asynchronies. Results suggest that attentional processing of a visual stimulus inhibits processing of a tactile one, even if both are delivered in the same contralesional hemispace. Reaction time (RT) to redundant stimuli was investigated while controlling for distraction effects and response competition. In Experiment 1, a redundancy gain was found for 2 target letters with identical features (redundant) compared to trials in which 2 different targets shared the same response assignment (compatible) indicating coactivation of stimulus inputs. No difference in RTs was found between compatible displays and displays containing 2 targets with different responses (incompatible), suggesting (with other evidence) that letters were serially processed. In Experiment 2, a redundancy gain was again found. Unlike in Experiment 1, incompatible displays produced response competition, indicating a redundancy gain with parallel processing. Three forms of redundancy gains operating under specific conditions are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This study investigated the active inhibition of precued distractor locations. In this study, the distractor location was precued by an arrow. Experiment 1 indicated that a valid precue could facilitate target localization. Experiment 2 demonstrated that when conflict trials were included, the distractor precue benefit was eliminated. Experiment 3 further showed that active inhibition required time to operate. The distractor precue benefit was observed only when the stimulus onset asynchrony between the precue and the target and distractor display was long. Experiment 4 illustrated that the benefit was not contingent on precuing the distractor response. Experiment 5 indicated that the benefit of distractor precuing was not due to the activation of target locations, and Experiment 6 showed that this benefit was due to attentional inhibition. Finally, Experiment 7 demonstrated that active inhibition of spatial location required an attentional resource to operate. These results indicated how a top-down mechanism exerted control on distractor locations. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Advance information about a target's identity improved visual search efficiency in pigeons. Experiments 1 and 2 compared information supplied by visual cues with information supplied by trial sequences. Reaction times (RTs) were lower when visual cues signaled a single target rather than two. RTs were lower (Experiment 1) or accuracy improved (Experiment 2) when a sequence of trials presented a single target rather than a mixture of 2. Experiments 3, 4, and 5 considered the selectivity of visual priming by introducing probe trials that reversed the usual cue–target relationship. RT was higher following such miscues than following the usual 1- or 2-target cuing relationships (Experiment 3); the miscuing effect persisted over variations in the target's concealment (Experiments 4 and 5), but did not occur when the target was presented alone (Experiment 4). Findings indicate that priming modifies an attentional mechanism and suggest that this effect accounts for search images. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Three experiments investigated interhemispheric interactions in number comparison using the interhemispheric Stroop-like paradigm (E. Ratinckx, M. Brysbaert, & B. Reynvoet, 2001). In all experiments, a target was presented in 1 visual field simultaneously with a distractor in the other visual field. In Experiment 1, both target and distractor were of the same modality (Arabic digits), whereas in Experiment 2, target and distractor were of different modalities (Arabic digits and word numerals). In Experiment 3, the interhemispheric Stroop-like task of Experiment 1 was combined with intrahemispheric conditions to evaluate the strength of the interhemispheric interactions. Overall, the results point to strong interhemispheric integration during semantic access and response preparation with very weak lateralization of the semantic number system. Four experiments investigated the effects of within-session stimulus repetition on texture discrimination. Six pigeons (Columba livia) searched for a contrasting target region (color or shape) randomly embedded within a larger distractor region for food reinforcement. Experiment 1 found that repeating features of the distractors, but not those of the target, across trials increased the accuracy of target localization relative to baseline. Experiment 2 found that subsequently switching the identity of a repeated distractor feature to the target decreased accuracy. Experiment 3 found that the effects of repeating a distractor feature influenced search performance for at least 60 trials after this learning. Experiment 4 found that differential stimulus-outcome relations can produce control by repeated target features. The results are discussed in terms of the factors and strategies involved in the control of avian visual search behavior. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Three visual search experiments investigated redundancy gains for single and dual odd-one-out feature targets that differed from distractors in orientation, color, or both. In Experiment 1, redundant-target displays contained (a) a single target defined in 2 dimensions, (b) dual targets each defined in a different dimension, or (c) dual targets both defined in the same dimension. The redundancy gains, relative to single nonredundant targets, decreased from the first condition on, with violations of J. Miller's (1982) race model inequality (RMI) manifested only in the first 2 conditions. Experiment 2 systematically varied the spatial separation between dual targets each defined in a different dimension. Violations of the RMI were evident only when the 2 targets occupied nearby locations. Experiment 3 provided evidence of RMI violations by dimensionally redundant targets at both precued (Rely) and noncued (unlikely) display locations. Taken together, these results suggest that there is coactivation of a common mechanism by target signals in different dimensions (not by signals in the same dimension), that the coactivation effects are spatially specific, and that the coactivated mechanisms are located at a preattentive, perceptual stage of processing. Two experiments tested predictions of the hemispheric coactivation model for redundancy gain (J. O. Miller, 2004). Simple reaction time was measured in divided attention tasks with visual stimuli presented to the left or right of fixation or redundantly to both sides. Experiment 1 tested the prediction that redundancy gain--the decrease in reaction time when 2 stimuli are presented rather than 1--should increase when the response requires a greater degree of bilateral control by both hemispheres. In different blocks, the response was made with the left hand, the right hand, or both hands simultaneously. In accordance with the model, redundancy gain was larger with bimanual than with unimanual responses. Experiment 2 tested and found support for the prediction that redundancy gain should decrease when both hemispheres are activated by an irrelevant auditory accessory stimulus. Thus, the results support the hemispheric coactivation model. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of the visibility of near and far letter distractors on target processing by scaling the size of the distractor letters to compensate for changes in resolution across the visual field. In Experiment 1, scaled and unscaled distractors were presented at varied stimulus onset asynchronies. Results showed that scaling the size of distractor letters in relation to their distance from the target was effective in producing strong compatibility effects. Scaled distractors presented prior to, or simultaneously with, the target were found to interfere with target processing whether they were near or far from the target. Experiment 2 used scaled distractors and varied the presentation location and the amount of time for processing prior to the presentation of the target. Compatibility effects were found to vary by location and by the exposure duration of the distractor. The finding of distance effects at far locations supports a space-based visual-attention mechanism with a wide attention beam (Steinman, Steinman, & Lehmkuhle, 1995).  相似文献
