Facial asymmetry. The diagnostic challenge

Evaluation of facial asymmetries requires a complete and systematic approach. This clinical examination is supplemented with radiographic studies including panoramic and cephalometric views. For complex cases CT scans are useful. Evaluation of the shape of the cervical vertebrae seen on lateral cephalometric radiographs can be used to predict potential growth in children.     

Reversible cavernous sinus involvement due to minor dental infection. Report of a case.

Described is a case of a cavernous sinus involvement due to minor dental infection. The early dental diagnosis and treatment reversed the course of cavernous sinus thrombosis.     

Reduction of mouth opening due to mandibular coronoid progess enlargement. Report of a case.

A case of unilateral mandibular coronoid enlargement associated with facial asymmetry and severe limitation of mandibular movement in a 19-year-old male patient is described. The indications for treatment and the types of surgical approach for removal of the enlarged process are discussed. The dual surgical approach required for resection of the coronoid in this case is described.     

Temporal abscess due to odontogenic infection: Report of a case

Due to acute inflammation of the tissue around the 1st molar in the left mandible, a lesion developed into an abscess in the temporal region. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) was very useful to detect the area of inflammation and to treat the abscess.     

Necrotizing osteitis of the mandibular angle with facial asymmetry due to tooth extraction--apropos of a case]

Five years after a tooth extraction, a bone necrosis of the mandibular angle happened, without consideration to the antibiotics. Such complication is rare. Living in poor socio-cultural and economic conditions, the patient tried to find help near tradipractionners, prayers groups, without any result. The treatment consisted to an extra oral incision, helping to eliminate bone sequestra, and the liquid around after a dynamic bimaxillary linkage by resin links was settled. About aetiology, only the questioning allowed to say that extraction was traumatic, putting in front of the surgical responsibility and post surgical survey.     

Facial morphology and occlusion of a patient with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP): a case report

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare disease characterized by postnatal heterotopic ossification (HO). When HO affects the masticatory muscles, mouth opening becomes restricted. This paper presents the changes in facial morphology and occlusion of a patient with FOP who was followed from the age of 8 to age 21. At the initial examination, he had a severely protruded maxilla and Angle Class II Division 1 malocclusion. His mouth opening was restricted (5.0 mm). He had a large overjet and this enabled him to clean his teeth and to eat. Orthodontic correction was not planned, and his facial growth was closely followed with attention to his oral hygiene. The maxillary protrusion and a low mandibular plane angle became more prominent as the patient aged. His mandible rotated in a counterclockwise direction. His molars had delayed eruption or were impacted and seven were extracted. His mouth opening increased slightly and his oral hygiene improved to excellent.     

Prosthetic rehabilitation of a traumatic occlusion due to bulimia nervosa. Case report

Because of the typical localisation of erosions in anorectic/bulimic patients, the dentist is frequently the first medical person to discern this general illness (anorexia and bulimia nervosa). From the dental viewpoint, the aim should be to preserve sound dental tissue and to prevent further toothwear. A restorative treatment is to be carried out only after causal therapy and after resolving the basic disease. By means of this procedure a good long-term prognosis can be expected. Considering the patient's young age, dentistry should be preservative using the adhesive technique. This case report documents the systematic procedure of the functional and esthetic rehabilitation of an eroded dentition and shows factors essential to the treatment.     

Facial asymmetry case with multiple missing teeth treated by molar autotransplantation and orthognathic surgery

Autotransplantation is an alternative treatment in cases of missing teeth. Autotransplantation of teeth can lead to significantly shorter treatment time and an improved treatment result in certain cases of tooth loss, wherever a suitable tooth is available and the anatomic circumstances permit it. The presented case report, treated successfully with molar autotransplantation and orthognathic surgery, had a number of missing teeth and facial asymmetry.
