基于语料库的Assure和Ensure两词的对比研究

利用语料库研究方法,基于英国国家语料库(BNC),比较分析意义相近的动词assure和ensure的词频、搭配、类联接及语义韵.研究发现,assure较ensure更常用于口语和小说中,ensure多用于学术文章和新闻中.assure用来表示向某人保证某事将要发生,既可以用来确证某事,也可以表示使某人确信,assure的宾语通常是人名或人称代词,抽象名词较少,而且做宾语的抽象名词多为积极语韵;而ensure后面的宾语通常是抽象名词,较少使用人名或人称代词,且做宾语的抽象名词也是多为积极语韵.通过观察索引行还得出ensure的5种典型搭配.

Acoustic analysis of cries from "normal" and "irritable" infants

Infant irritability or colic is characterized by recurrent episodes of persistent, unexplained crying. The lack of a precise definition of the type and amount of cry that distinguishes an infant as colicky has hampered research and intervention efforts. The primary aims of this study are to describe the acoustic characteristics of cries of irritable infants and compare these to those of normal infants. Tape recorded cries of 11 irritable and 11 non-irritable infants were compared. The average age for infants of both groups was 8 weeks. The cries of irritable infants were higher in jitter, shimmer, proportion of noise, and tenseness than were the cries of control infants. Findings suggest that colic or infant irritability is more than just excessive crying. Acoustic characteristics of the cries of irritable infants reveal an increase in stress-arousal that supports the thesis of a state regulation disorder. Characterizing the nature and origin of the cries of irritable infants is essential to an understanding that will eventually guide appropriate diagnosis and management of these infants.

"Survivors" and "victims": long-term HIV positive individuals and the ethos of self-empowerment

Recent research on contemporary processes of self-construction has suggested that the concepts of "self", "health", "morality" and "responsibility" have become inextricably interconnected, to the extent that the "pursuit of health has become the pursuit of moral personhood" [R. Crawford (1994) The boundaries of the self and the unhealthy other: reflections on health, culture and AIDS, Social Science & Medicine 38(10), 1347-1365]. What happens then when a person becomes "diseased"? Are they doomed to the stagnant mire of "illness" and "immorality", to the role of undesirable "other"? What if the disease is HIV infection? Is it the case of HIV = AIDS = DEATH = "OTHER" par excellence? This paper addresses these issues by examining the constructions of "self" and "other" used by HIV positive individuals themselves. By reference to a specific group of people living with long-term HIV positive diagnoses, it demonstrates how unhealthy HIV infected "others", as perceived by "healthy" members of society, create their own conceptions of "self" and "other" which microcosmically mirror typical processes of identity construction. The content, function and potential advantages and disadvantages of these processes are highlighted.     

"Remembrance and reflection"

Takayasu's arteritis (TA) is a chronic inflammatory arteriopathy affecting the large vessels and has been described predominantly in young adult women. In children it presents as an aggressive disease usually requiring chronic corticosteroid therapy. At present, low dose oral methotrexate (MTX) appears to be an effective steroid-sparing agent in adult patients with active TA. We report a 4-year-old child with Takayasu's arteritis who was initially placed on oral prednisone (2 mg/kg/day) therapy. Three months later, low-dose oral MTX (10 mg/m2/week) was added. Prednisone was successfully tapered over the following year to 0.2 mg/kg every other day. A repeat angiography following 12 months of therapy revealed a dramatic improvement of the vascular lesions. No toxicity was observed with MTX therapy. In conclusion, low-dose oral MTX appeared to be an efficient, safe and steroid-sparing agent in the treatment of a young child with TA.
